Stelarc is no poser - he is the real deal! He was my 7th and 8th grade arts teacher back in the 1970s in Yokohama, Japan, and I have followed his ventures through the decades. Stelarc is a man ahead of his time.
That is SO COOL! I have to ask though, were you and/or any your classmates somewhat scared of him? (I mean that laugh is a little maniacal haha) Or was he a little more restrained in front of young students? Did he show any of his controversial works?
He was a gentle 'hippie' like teacher - sweet and kind. We worked with cellophane and did basket weaving! And when we weren't weaving the straw, we thought we were cool and would try to smoke it! When we got in the higher grades, Stellarc started doing some rather different stuff - 'mind over matter' , like suspending himself with meat hooks and having lasers shot at his eyes (which he had something covering them), or laying under a 5000 lb boulder hung by some random cable - stuff like that!
This guy genuinely freaks me out. But, what he's done makes realize that our bodies are nothing but suits, kind of like the suits you find in the game Dead Space, that can be upgraded. When you think about it we can add so many things to our bodies to enhance our functionality and quality of life. However, the question is whether or not people will accept the fact that we can upgrade our bodies without losing what we call our "humanity" and the appreciation of our bodies in its purest form.
Our brain is bio-mechanical and a electrical information processor. Our emotions come from energy impulses in neuronal ionic channels through complex nerve pathways. A machine, just like signals through silicon chips.
When I saw his ear I remembered seeing this guy on discovery channel or something, it was about how he really wanted a real ear but had to settle for an ear shaped prostetic under his arm skin and how his body rejected it. Glad to see its goin well for him.
This just makes me wonder how this guy makes money. Seriously. All this stuff looks terribly expensive, how can he afford it all? There's another man that does stuff like this, Steve Mann, but he's got a regular job as a University professor, and he's a published author and he's worked on computational photography and HDR imaging, so his revenue stream is fairly obvious. I've always been interested in how machines work and how we interact with them, and I'd love to do stuff like this. I've so many ideas, but I can't afford any of them.
I can't help but wonder if this guy is just going for shock factor. Who in their right mind would want to give up their right to an identity? Let's hope the future stays away from AI and giving up what it means to be human. Honestly humans are nowhere near perfect in design, but i truly believe we aren't meant to be. There's something more to life than just material pefection
This guy embodies some of the worst stereotypes of the "pretentious artist." his personality overwhelmed his art, which is sad, because I actually found it pretty interesting.
+Carlos Rocha What novel contributions have you imparted to the world that doesn't involve projecting what might be evident in your own personality? Don't a fuckwad. The last thing you'll probably leave in this world is a video called "wake days with gary," and I see that, coupled with this statement, as a prime notion of a pretentious artist, a true existential story of a self-proclaimed critic.
+hellowhitepeople Well put. You totally nailed me. Bravo! Great Job! As mere humans, we can only aspire to attain your TalonRo prowess. You, the faceless commenter who favorites videos of girls breaking chopsticks with their ass cheeks. Please, tell me more about myself I do not know, now that you have studied the complete portfolio that is my TH-cam channel. You have enlightened me. I now know the miracle that is Stelarc, the man with three fucking ears who believes we subscribe to Freudian essences.
He made a living for 30 years off this crap? His exibit should be called "Deez Peeps B Krayz-E 2 Bi Disheet 4:30 Yurz". He may have an extra ear but I bet it can't even hear. At least my "third leg" is functional.
It was a project he did where he suspended himself from an industrial lifting gantry using meat hooks through his naked body, then controlled the gantry while suspended. It was rather like looking at him as a puppet of technology.
Im all about cybernetics but this dude is just wants to grab attention. You can hear from the ear in his arm? stupid shit. Props to him on going above and beyond for what he likes to do.
But we are the machines. It may be possible to make human replicas with our complexity to be able to have emotions. The brain has trillions of connections, computers aren't there yet but they will be in the coming decades.
Very interesting. But as a scientist, with both undergrad and post grad science and medical degrees, a lot of what he said in his intro is just not correct... The rest of the clip though, great and deep ideas! Love it.
Mr. Trump, what is 2+2? "I have to say a lot of people have been asking this question. No, really. A lot of people come up to me and they ask me. They say, "What's 2+2"? And I tell them look, we know what 2+2 is. We've had almost eight years of the worst kind of math you can imagine. Oh my god, I can't believe it. Addition and subtraction of the 1s the 2s and the 3s. Its terrible. Its just terrible. Look, if you want to know what 2+2 is, do you want to know what 2+2 is? I'll tell you. First of all the number 2, by the way I love the number 2. It's probably my favorite number, no it is my favorite number. You know what, it's probably more like the number two but with a lot of zeros behind it. A lot. If I'm being honest, I mean, if I'm being honest. I like a lot of zeros. Except for Marco Rubio, now he's a zero that I don't like. Though, I probably shouldn't say that. He's a nice guy but he's like, "10101000101", on and on, like that. He's like a computer! You know what I mean? He's like a computer. I don't know. I mean, you know. So, we have all these numbers and we can add them and subtract them and add them. TIMES them even. Did you know that? We can times them OR divide them, they don't tell you that, and I'll tell you, no one is better at the order of operations than me. You wouldn't believe it. That I can tell you. So, we're gonna be the best on 2+2, believe me. OK? Alright. "We gonna knock the hell out of ISIS, believe me," Thank You, Thank you, Thank you.
Matt Drago Listen, 2 plus 2 is just four 1's or maybe a pair of 2's like the time Ivana and I went to that swingers club back when America was great. Some very smart people say maybe, and I say 'MAYBE', 2 plus two could be a mismatched 1 and a 3 put together. But folks, let me tell you, the equation that the media wants you to believe equals "four" is purely fake news, folks.
I first read your comment before I saw the video. I thought well.. ok. thats strange. As soon as the video started I was laughing within the first few seconds. haha
Sorry for my poor word choice, however, i felt that he and I haven't actualized our full potential/message and its my fault for hastily projecting. Peace and Love
Fantastic guy, helping us to question basic Ontology - helping us to understand that we misapprehend the "self" - that there is, in fact, no self, apart from the constituent parts that together, we label as our "self". He is shaing the (conceptual) tree !
Yes but machines do not have emotions. If you work your computer continuously they do not care. People get tired from work machines never say "give me a day off!!!" there only programmed to what you program them what to do.
dat mad scientist laugh tho..
20 years ahead of his time. Guy isn't gonna wait for the future, he's bringing it here.
Real nice.
+hopskotchrecords. I'm sober for the future.
Stelarc is no poser - he is the real deal! He was my 7th and 8th grade arts teacher back in the 1970s in Yokohama, Japan, and I have followed his ventures through the decades. Stelarc is a man ahead of his time.

We weren't scared of him. It was the 70's! There were a lot of strange things going on at that time.
+Kathy Jetten You are so lucky.
so this is where arca got her inspiration from..

this guy is waaay ahead of his time
How do you know machines do not have feelings? The machine in your head has them.
@4:28 the lady slip goes along with the beat lol
"the blood that is circulating in my body now might be circulating in your body tomorrow"
i sure fucking hope not.

this guy was thinking about advanced trans-humanistic concepts in the 80s. Dude is legit.
he is a self taught inventor he has been designing the future machines all his life.
I think it's creepier that you've stalked him for 25 years.
Well said, doesn't surprise me that there are a fair amount of people making snap judgements about his character.
looks like something from a horror sci fi movie
Some women say I am like a man with three legs. They call me Stellarod.
Love Stelarc, he is a cool geezer :-) The world needs more eccentrics..
that evil laugh though
Very intresting man. He defnately has some philosophies that a good many could learn from.
I can't help but wonder if this guy is just going for shock factor. Who in their right mind would want to give up their right to an identity? Apparently his laugh was the inspiration for Wolf Creek. Says so in the director's commentary.
Good luck dude. Let me know when I can have the Terminator's eyes.

@@CarlosRochaTX what did this mysterious character say and what is the chopstick ads thing you're talking about?
What I give to see one of his robots twist his spine into a thousand knots

Don't hurt me no more
Oh, baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
A 3rd ear is NOT the 1st extra appendage we'd opt for. #ZentripzCrew
This is an evil mad scientist, that laugh is proof, movies had it right! But he's cool!
He is looking like that spiderman villian
wtf is that naked thing at the end
It was a project he did where he suspended himself from an industrial lifting gantry using meat hooks through his naked body, then controlled the gantry while suspended. It was rather like looking at him as a puppet of technology.
+Louder That one was interesting because he controlled his own suspension.
Ear in your hand ? il stick to a mobile phone thanks
Im all about cybernetics but this dude is just wants to grab attention. You can hear from the ear in his arm? stupid shit. Props to him on going above and beyond for what he likes to do.
Stelarc is a performance artist and always has been. His medium just happens to be cybernetics.
That video doesn't help your case at all. it says nothing on the parameters of sentience and the future of machines
Guy seems to know what's popular in modern tech but he looks completely disconnected from any of it, including social norms
So what's motherboard anyway? An off shoot of Vice?
But we are the machines. It may be possible to make human replicas with our complexity to be able to have emotions. The brain has trillions of connections, computers aren't there yet but they will be in the coming decades.
FUTURIST. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HUMAN BEINGS
cause three ears are too extreme that's why
Very interesting. But as a scientist, with both undergrad and post grad science and medical degrees, a lot of what he said in his intro is just not correct... The rest of the clip though, great and deep ideas! Love it.

Still alive?
Very much so. Had coffee with him recently.
Nah it's all that bullshit that they put in movies and cartoons. That's why you say that.
This guy is a poser, not an artist.
such narrow mindedness :(
Sorry for my poor word choice, however, i felt that he and I haven't actualized our full potential/message and its my fault for hastily projecting. Peace and Love
What is your art, if I may ask?
I'm a bedroom music producer, feel free to check out my songs that are on my page.

I kinda know that now :)

Is there any practical use for anything this man has done?
modern day dr evil

Yeah, we Australian's do have some nutjobs out there. I apologise for this bloke, world.
