Love all your interviews & studio tours, but hands down, THIS is my FAV. I got to spend some time here, back in 97/98. There have been some serious updates but the analog heart of the studio is still intact! Great tour!! Love your content.
I also mix analog. Soundcraft, 16 mono channels. Top and bottom shelf, sweepable mids, but not at all unlfexible or unmusical. I'm so musically liberated! Recall is a pain, but no complaints. I find that moving on and calling a mix final comes around quicker and I feel much better about it. For sure, kick and bass don't sound the same between in-the-box and on an analog mixer.
Just had an idea right at the end of this for digital plugins, a virtual rack mount in the DAW would be cool so you can quickly see what's being pinned instead of recalling each plugin and deducing where the problem is. Hey Logic, Steinberg & Avid!
It's cool that these folks actually still do everything on their console, rather than having it just become the most expensive drink coaster in town. :)
This old school approach to recording is why music use to sound so good. Standardisation from old tape days focused on getting the sound right and committing it to the recording. Music was listened to, not looked at. Your ears are far more in tune when you're not distracted by technology. Technology is great when it's supports the flow and vibe of making music. Too much attention to the computer and not the performer can alienate the artist. This is your best video I've seen. Thanks.
absolutely, but people with low brow taste (the type who would argue Ariana Grande is 'totally awesome') will argue for vanilla sausage protools all day. If one has ANY ear for music, they can hear the difference.
I love this guy's attitude and passion, yet he's probably my polar opposite :) The only thing I agree on is the quality of the API, all the rest he consider the "best option" is something I am happy have not to deal with anymore. The day I switched from ADATs to Cubase was one of the best days of my life. 24 tracks limit, no recalls, punch-ins, no plug-ins, no virtual instruments in a studio? Well, it may work with nostalgic musicians, but I am a little worried for the young girl, because that kind of customers tend to be less in time :)
Not enough footage of the gear being talked about. The camera keeps pointing at the person talking about the gear. And this happens in every episode in this series of studio tours.
automation is still a performance. you have to record the automation. no different than recording midi instruments. or really any instrument. you're recording something and then playing it back.
19:35 The VU’s are sooo much better then the mci consoles with those useless LED carnival LED lights. The VU’s actually work and serve a purpose. I have an mci 428 console & JH-24 two inch deck both with VU’s. Those leds are useless.
Every thing he is saying about analog being faster and easier is actually incorrect. Its the very reason Andrew Schepps, Dave Pensado, and thousands of others use Protools. Studio One, Logic, Abelton Live, Sonar and any other DAW with Plug ins.. And the AD/DA converters such as Presonus, Burl Mothership, UAD Apollo and so forth are top notch. This is a guy that can't let go of the past. I guarantee if I was doing a session, I can mark the time, for example 2 mins 31 seconds, hit one key stroke and the computer is ready in microseconds instead of waiting for a Radar or Tape machine to rewind. Its the reason I stop using my ADATs. Plus radar can't insert plugins. I guarantee he is limited with his outboard gear. If he's got one or two Pultecs that's all he's got. with a Plugin I can have 40 Pultecs if I need it. I am hybrid with analog outboard gear and an analog console but that is for the sound. 99 percent of studios home or Commercial use DAWs and plugins with a combination of some outboard gear and maybe a console because it makes million times more sense. Even Chris lord Alge uses Protools with Plugins with his 100,000 dollar outboard gear and SSL Console. RADAR has no way, the editing capability of a DAW and what can be done with a DAW. Plus he is only able to do 24 tracks. I seen session with a 50 or more tracks. He got to stereo tracks and lose tracks with RADAR if he needs more than 24. If you really listen to his flow methods they are 10 times slower than a DAW. If I need more tracks, I can right click and hit add. I can highlight and paste, cut, slide, drag and delete in seconds over his methods. Look up every Commercial Studio such as Ocean Way, Conway, East West, Westlake, Electric Lady, Hit Factory, Capitol, RCA, and hundreds more that are still open. Ask them if they have a RADAR or a HD Protools rig. I guarantee its Protools. I know he said he has Protools and can't use it, Its only because he is stuck in the past. Most high paying clients want you to have Protools so that can stem the files and go from there.
protools makes everything sound homogenized and sterile. Everything sounds the same. If you are recording pop music then yeah sure, its disposable meh music anyway. DAWs/ protools is definetly easier, but easier isnt always (usually isnt) better. Protools and clicking to a grid sucks the life and soul right out of music. Its part of the reason most modern music sucks.
Love their philosophy!Keep it analog and out of the box. It is much faster and you can see what you are doing.Record it raw and screw it up later (grin). Compressor should only be in the record chain to keep you out of trouble, when the artist does something you did not see or know was coming.Haven't seen one of the EMT aircraft throttle controls in ages.Never liked JBLs. hated their high end. Felt like a electric drill going into the ears, but to each their own.
Wow, they really love optical compressors! That is a lot of high quality optical compression in one spot.
Haha, would they mind if I just took one home??

I send LTC from my radar to my api and use the automation on my board, works and sounds great.
Awesome!!
Excellent video man! Will you be doing 1 on Dan Lanois ✌
Hey thanks so much! That would be pretty great!!

Thanks for watching! Appreciate the tip! Will try to improve on that in future episodes. - Scott

He is wishing right now that he never traded those vintage 1176's.
:)
A channel about studio's and the sound is terrible, sort her mic out.
Thanks for the tip, Owen! We’ll aim for a clearer audio track on the next go around! Thanks for watching and for the comment! - Scott
