I met Michael Schenker and Uli Roth at the House of Blues. We talked, they were very down to earth, I will always remember that evening. I got Uli Roth to autograph a MSG shirt for my brother, he didn't like the idea, but he was very gracious, thanks again Uli!

It doesn't bother me what he thinks of Scorpions. I watched him live in 2022 and still do the same thing as in 1970's at age of 67 and he looks so happy on stage too. It's like he never aged much last 50 years on stage. Timeless guitar player that still plays perfect. It's crazy that he played a 20 minute version of Rock Bottom in recent years.

Michael is great! I got to meet him in AZ in the eighties and he gave me a earful on everyone from eddie v. to Rudolph his brother. He is a legend and was set for super stardom in the eighties but personal demons ( alcohol, woman, business) just stalled him. I'm so grateful he's still active and looks like he gave up alcohol. God bless you Michael, you gave me years of inspiration. Peace.

Love to hear his diss on Eddie, etc. Remember in 1980 he 'disappeared' and was part of th Moonies for a time. "Bellevue, WA" where I lived at the time, was a world capital of metal and (I'm a huge Michael Schenker fan) and he took calls from Bellevue on a radio program - he was very Germanic, WAY too serious and a bit superior.
You were lucky to meet him for sure.

There is always two sides to every story.
Firstly Michael left Scorpions by his own choice in 1973 and some of his songs that he co wrote with the band also appear on Fly to the Rainbow their second album where he is credited on this album. He left UFO after Phill Mogg gave him a beating in 1978 .He later got married and went to Germany on his honeymoon where he contacted Rudy to break the news of his wedding. Rudy invited him to the studio and Michael made contributions to the album playing on Coast to coast, holiday, Another piece of meat and the title track Lovedrive. I personally believe he played on all the tracks of the album and in Rudolfs own words his presence was to help the young Matthias gain his confidence which makes perfectly good sense. It was Rudolf who decided to let Matthias down in favour of looking after his own brother. When they recorded Lonesome Crow which is such a brilliant debut album the young Michael was barely 15 years old and was only allowed by his parents to tour with the band providing Klaus and Rudy took charge over him as he was that young he was still at school.
He was very well looked after by the band financially by Rudolf who for contractual reasons couldnt be credited due to the legality of Michael beibg under contract by Chrysallis records and the Scorpions with EMI.

Schenker may have left UFO in 78 but it was not due to a simple 'beat down' from Moog. there was much more going on in Schenker's life at the time. You seem to be a person of simplification, it was far from simple, and simple dosen't represent all the facts.

@@KWE.ECLECTIC truth is michael left ufo because he felt he was the main talent and wanted the lions share of the money. there are several stories floating around out there as to why he left, but it boiled down to money.

    • @KWE.ECLECTIC

@@izzimichaels2892 It appears to be much more complicated than money. From everything I had read and from listening to interviews with Michael, it appears he was never truly satisfied anywhere. It's reported that substance abuse caused erratic behavior in the band, and just pointing a finger at Schenker would be only part of the truth. If you listen to Schenkers side of the story, he wanted to be his own man and do his own thing. Maybe that's why he was never happy staying put anywhere too long. It's complicated, just like any other band break up. Everyone has a story to tell, and all the stories are probably right when you put them into a whole.

@@KWE.ECLECTIC oh i agree, theres more to it than just money...but most things in any business boil down to money, and when theres a lot of money it shifts to ego and money.....one of schenkers stories for having left ufo (im sure youve read it too) was that he was upset at the tracks chosen for SITN..... he said he heard his riff in rock bottom, and was so upset that he quit ufo. and of course theres the "moog hit me" story.....and theres the "i wanted to do my own thing story" his stories have a way of changing over the years. schenker was a primadonna back in the day, and was difficult' to say the least. he was the star, the talent, the wunderkind...that will go to most anyone's head especially at such a young age. dont get me wrong, im a hardcore schenker fan, and truth be told, it makes no difference to me, its just my opinion. except for 4 cancellations he never caused me any grief. and i happen to feel that his various band changes and career decisions were perfect. im glad he left ufo when he did, im glad he didnt stay with the scorpions...he has produced so much great material over the years, im thankful for his longevity.

  • @MelloGee33
    @MelloGee33 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

OK, OK.....Look, I know Michael, as of late, has been releasing some long-time, pent-up 'inner-frustrations' about his earlier days with the Scorpions, Rudolf, etc, etc, and yes, his last name certainly does carry some weight as far as the Scorpions being 'linked' to him and his great reputation as a musician and all, but let's face it.....after 1973, the Scorpions DID write some seriously stellar material/songs on thier own, of their own merits, which are all timeless, both with Uli and Matthias, and it was without Michael. Michael Schenker may be PART of the reason the Scorpions got even bigger in the late 70's and finally in North America because of his doings with UFO, and his musical direction and rock vision in the early days of the Scorpions, but it's certainly NOT the ENTIRE reason they got so big. A lot of that was because of the Scorpions' own talent and vision. Let's be real here.

I wonder why the Scorpions where so big back in the eighties and nineties. It was all because of Michael? Come on! Maybe he gave them a push, but that's it. Also, the Scorpions wouldn't become so big with Uli. He was not so metal minded. Matthias fit perfectly in the band to make it big. If it comes to success I don't believe the Scorpions ever regreted the change of their former lead guitarists.

    • @JokersWild70
      @JokersWild70 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

No, I don't think that he's saying that ALL of their success was due to him. When Matthias joined the band, he wasn't quite ready to take over as lead guitarist, so they asked Michael to help them on the "Lovedrive" album, which broke the band in the U.S. I think that he co-wrote or wrote 5 songs on it. By the time they got to "Blackout", Matthias was definitely holding his own as a lead guitarist. Even Michael has said that "I was the right guitarist for them in the 70's, and Matthias was the right one for them in the 80's."

Micheal himself is kinda of a quirky guy from what I understand. He is said to have been difficult to work with sometimes walking offstage in a middle of a song
(maybe that why Phil Moog punched him) His time in MSG is said to be littered with personality conflicts and incidents. And of course in 2007 he was too drunk to play at several cancelled out shows. And I read that he had too pawn a few of his beloved Flying V's just to get by in the early 2000's. Don't know him personally but from I read I think his bad money managing problem was alcohol related. Then again some of the best players were quirky guys too, like Ritchie Blackmoore,
Hendrix. It is good he has straightened up.

I heard of Michael first because of UFO Strangers in the Night. Then I heard that he had a brother who also had a cool band called Scorpions. When I first heard Tokyo Tapes and Lovedrive it was even better than I hoped for. Michael is an amazing guitarist but I think he is putting a little too much on this. Ulrich Roth is also a great guitarist and Mathias Jabs is no slouch. Personally I love Rudolph's solos even though they are not virtuoso type like Michael or Ulrich. I just heard a concert today from 1997 called Michael Schenker Story. Almost three hours of great playing and singing by everyone involved.
I have seen Scorpions three times and they were fantastic each time. I would not say anyone is better than them as a live hard rock act. I saw UFO in 1979 right after Michael left, a band called Judas Priest also played that night one block from my house.
In conclusion I do not believe what Michael is saying here about his brother. Rudolph is worth 80 million and Michael is worth 6 million. The only reason is because Rudolph wanted that recognition and success and focused on it. Michael is said to be difficult to work with and moody.

No, that's not true. Scorpions disbanded after Michael's leaving. Rudy won casting to Uli's group Dawn Road. It was Rudy who joined Uli first. After that they both called Klaus. And Klaus decided to work with them, there was no Michael at this point.
Now Klaus works with Rudy for almost 50 years. They are partners and good friends. It's silly to think that the reason for their productive relationship is Michael.

This is CLEARLY a family issue! If Michael had the same issue with a band member that was not a member of his family, it would not be an issue years later. This is about far more than certain songs that were played, who has more talent, etc.… There are some things that Rudolph and Michael both probably need to sit down and talk about that have nothing to do with music, but instead, have to do with each other and their pasts/childhoods

People don't understand where he's coming from . He helped his brother and the Scorpions , Lovedrive was the album that made the band get noticed . And he wrote the music to Coast to Coast , and Holiday . And many other guitar parts on the album . He was already famous from Ufo , at the time . Rudolph was unknown even though he was older . He even let Rudolph use his black and white V guitar , for his image in the Scorpions . Then years later he see's Rudolph is taking credit for songs that he wrote . And making up stories about him that were not true . Plus 2 of his friends , Herman and Francis part of the classic lineup get sacked from the band . Most likely because they didn't want to give Francis writing credits for things he did in the Scorpions . Michael has a right to take issue with Rudolph .

All of what you said is true. You missed one point. The first three MSG albums were one of the great hard rock albums of all time- Not in terms of Fame, but in terms of musicality. Thank You album was also quite good. His work with McCauley was above average and also Assault attack which has a few really good tracks.
With Michael schenker, you've got 2 great Scorpions albums- Lonesome Crow and Lovedrive (partially) . All of the legendary Lovedrive songs are written by M Schenker. He has single handedly written the music for the most phenomenal UFO Albums - Phenomenon, Force it, No Heavy Petting, lights out, obsession, walk on water. Plus the MSG albums mentioned above. Musically, he has more outstanding records to his name than Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Evh, or the metallica/ gnr guitarists have had in their respective illustrious careers. His longevity as a creative guitarist is outstanding and he has all the rights to say whatever the hell he wants. He's a force of nature in terms of guitar playing.

Talk about Scorpions, besides Klaus with his unique powerful hi-pitch vocal, none of other members get much attention (except their new drummer Mikkey Dee due to his high profile in Motorhead), but people always remember the band as a great legendary rock band in history because of their songwritting, which help them to get and keep fans from around he world until this day, and their new songs are still very catchy to listen to, especially Eye Of The Storm and Follow Your Heart

I don't understand this thing called 'sibling rivalry' even though I can relate to it myself... I think that the 2 brothers Michael & Rudolf Schenker are as different as can be, and yet so similar... I don't believe that Rudolf "stole" anything (but he did use some compositions by other bands, like 'Always somewhere' being similar to Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Simple kind of man').
Michael Schenker is definitely the guitar wizard and musical composer of the two... we all know about his battles w/ alcoholism and clashes w/ members of U.F.O. and other bands. But he is a musical genius, and he wasn't necessarily concerned w/ being a massively popular artist.
Rudolf Schenker is a rhythm guitarist and riff master... he's more business-oriented & driven than his brother in terms of making it in music, and that was why the Scorpions were so successful. He & Klaus were just focused on playing all the gigs they could until the Scorpions made it... Michael did have his chance to be part of it again in 1979, but he wasn't happy w/ that job and willingly gave it to guitarist Matthias Jabs, who rode w/ the Scorpions to international stardom. And it was hard-earned... they toured non-stop for most of the 80's and 90's.
Even in the 90's, when 80's rock was decimated and unpopular, the Scorpions did not stop touring or putting out new music until the fans came back again... that is Rudolf Schenker's dedication right there.
Michael Schenker had the talent and creativity, and his volume & quality of music is proof of that. But objectively, he didn't have the business mindset or the relentless drive that Rudolf seems to have... I don't understand the bitterness. From what I heard, Rudolf did quite a bit to help Michael out financially when he was not making money and had problems w/ alcohol... But It's good to see Michael Schenker recording music, touring actively and being truly appreciated when he wasn't for many years.

According to Rudolf he was paid his royalties. Uli stands by Rudolf and thinks that Michael should not be bitter as Scorpions was Rudolfs band.

To a point I do agree with MS that the Scorpions did benefit from their link to him especially during the 70’s, but in the 80’s the Scorpions became their own band while MS lagged. His height was in the 70’s.

And yet look how much bigger and more successful Rudolf and Scorpions have been over time. The Scorps have also way outdone him with output of music and longevity. This is pure jealousy.

    SO TRUE WHAT IS SAID!
BY MICHAEL'S INTERVIEWS AND BIO, FROM HIS OFFICIAL WEBSITE, WE KNOW THAT HE CO-WROTE WITH HIS BROTHER RUDOLPH THE MUSIC FOR "HOLIDAY" ( HE COMPOSED THE SLOW OVERTURE) AND "COAST TO COAST"( HE COMPOSED THE MAIN MELODY AND SOLO ), WITHOUT BEING MENTIONED IN ALBUM'S SONGS CREDITS. HE'S ONLY MENTIONED FOR PLAYING LEAD GUITAR ON " LOVEDRIVE ", " ANOTHER PIECE OF MEAT " AND " COAST TO COAST ". ANYONE HAS LISTENED MICHAEL'S MUSIC, CAN RECOGNIZE THAT HE'S THE OWNER OF COAST TO COAST MELODY.
HE HAD ALSO A CONTRACT AS BAND'S MEMBER FOR " LOVEDRIVE " ALBUM , WITHOUT BEING MENTIONED AS A MEMBER, OR SEEN ON BAND'S ALBUM PICTURE.
ON THE OTHER HAND, ALTHOUGH I AGREE THAT RUDOLPH WAS TRYING TO COPY MICHAEL'S MUSIC, GUITAR AND STYLE, I DISAGREE WITH MICHAEL ( Ι ΤΗΙΝΚ ΗΕ'S HYPERBOLIC ), WHEN HE SAYS THAT HIS BROTHER CAN NOT PLAY GUITAR! RUDOLPH ( AS WE ALL KNOW ) HAS COMPOSED HUGE HARD ROCK CLASSICS. INTERNATIONAL, DIACHRONIC BIG HITS ! THERE MUST BE SOME TALENT IN RUDOLPH'S MIND AND PLAYING. NOT SUCH AS MICHAEL'S, OF COURSE !
RUDOLPH IS A CLEVER, VERY SUCCESSFUL GUITARIST. MICHAEL IS A LIVING LEGEND, ΑΝ ΕMBLEMATIC GUITARIST OF ROCK MUSIC ΗΙSTORY !!!

@@TheNewAeon2012 , in the first cd edition of "lovedrive" i own, and in the previous editions of the album, from original lp until the previous edition, before the last 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of 2015, Michael Schenker was not mentioned in the credits of the album as a co-writer with his brother, of "Coast to Coast" and "Holiday". As i already have mentioned and Michael Schenker himself have denounced in several
public interviews and in his official web page, Michael Schenker was only mentioned and thanked for PLAYING LEAD GUITAR ON " LOVEDRIVE ", " ANOTHER PIECE OF MEAT " AND " COAST TO COAST ", without having any income of "Coast to Coast" and "Holiday" and not mentioned and photographed as a member of the band, according to his contract, until 2015's new release of the album.

@@freeman7015 Thanks, I didn't know all these details about him not being credited for Holiday etc. It had always been my understanding that he only played lead on those select tracks and that was all. My problem, though, is that I don't necessarily believe Michael, because it's quite suspect that he didn't do anything about this for about 30 years and then all of a sudden he remembered that he'd co-written Coast to Coast and Holiday. Surely it's crossed your mind too right?

He might just be stating the facts. This might not be an attack of some sort, just a statement of fact.
In any case I saw Schenker supporting the Scorpions years ago so they must have a working relationship and to claim that each didn't profit from the other would be ridiculous.
