- Welcome to Codenames! We're split up into two teams and have to guess our "secret" words before the opposing team. Each team has a spymaster who can see the entire board. The spymaster comes up with a word or phrase that can link as many correct words together as possible WITHOUT linking the opposing team's words. And if the gray word is chosen by either team, it's game over. Super fun game. I love being spymaster and losing my mind listening to my teammates figuring it out lol. Feels very much like being dead in Among Us and shouting at my computer monitor. Enjoy!

See, that confuses me more as a Midwesterner. If we have a small garden for veggies or fruit at home, it usually goes in the backyard. Backyard eliminating garden still makes sense for that, at least to me.
There isn't supposed to be confusion because you do have a garden in America if you grow fruits and vegetables. The front yard is for the flowers to make the property look nice and the back for the fruits and vegetables to have for the kitchen. The biggest problem is that people aren't growing their vegetables. I used to have a vegetable and fruit garden in my backyard, but squirrels wouldn't let us have anything there even with fencing around it.

Problem is that I don't believe any of them have ever lived or been to the Midwest because it is more common than you would think to have a backyard garden for stuff like Strawberries, Potatoes, Carrot, Onions and other fruits and vegetables

My Nana is from Australia and she had a flower garden in the front yard, in the back yard, and on the sides of the house. I argue anywhere you are deliberately growing and caring for plants outside could be considered a garden.

Technically all fruit are vegetables, vegetable by definition just means the edible part of any "Vegetation". Fruit is a subclass of vegetable, not exclusionary.
Historically it didn't even need to be edible. Just ask the modern major general.

A garden can be more than just flowers and plants. Plus most gardens I have seen were in a backyard. Also you can walk through a garden. A garden can consist of a walkway through it. The amount of just confusion and arguing/debating was great but man did they really fail to think of other interpretations of words.
There is a very convincing theory that Amelia crashed near an island and washed up on shore and was eaten by Coconut Crabs because she was injured and couldn't escape them. If I'm not mistaken, she crashed in the Pacific.
Well, TECHNICALLY...
A vegetable only has meaning in cooking terms. It has NO botanical meaning. It is totally possible to be a fruit and a vegetable at the same time. It's just the vegetables can also be berries (which is probably also a kind of fruit as well), leaves, roots and presumably other parts of a plant as well. A vegetable is just a catch-all term for the parts of our diet that comes from plants, really.
I guess you could argue that a botanical fruit and a culinary fruit is also slightly different, because most people don't think of stuff like tomatoes as being a fruit in a cooking sense, but they definitely are in a botanical sense. Also strawberries, which aren't really berries, and the seeds on the big red thing we eat is technically a very tiny nut, so that's really a weird kind of 'wombo combo' of plant matter, none of which is a berry, at least some of which is a fruit, and then the big red bit of the strawberry, which I really don't know what it actually is.
I'd like to stress that I am not a botanist nor a biologist, nor am I qualified as a nutritionist or cook. There is likely a vastly better way than what I have said here to word this.
What is funny is there are two completely different definitions for vegetables...there is the culinary definition of vegetables which is essentially the edible part of a plant that is savory (not sweet), so squash, cucumber, pepper, etc.
While scientifically vegetable was never really an actual term, it encompasses all the edible parts of a plant. You can further split it into Stem, Leaves, Roots, Tubers, Bulbs, Seeds, and Flowers (I think that is all of them). Examples of each would be Celery, Lettuce, Carrot, Potato, Onion, Peas, and Broccoli. Fruits are a subcategory of vegetable scientifically speaking, and includes things like Squash, Tomatoes, and Apples.
The difference has been debated for years, with tomatoes and things like Squash being the main topics. Oklahoma even declared Watermelon their state vegetable in 2007

You may not be a botanist, biologist, nutritionist or cook...but at least you understand a basic detail about how language works that seems to be beyond the grasp of a terrifying number of people.
I just use the logic of most things we call vegetables are actually fruits, but most things we call vegetables do not belong in a fruit salad.

@@TopOfAllWorlds In britan the entire backyard is called a garden, including the yard part. In america only the flowerbeds are called a garden. A lot of houses don't have flowerbeds in the backyard but nearly every house has them in the frontyard. Since they didn't make the connection that backyard was a synonym for garden they assumed that the fact that he used the word backyard instead of frontyard was important and used that to determine what they should/shouldn't click instead.

@@lokiokami2302 it also could have still lead to ‘rabbit.’ Since you get ‘spring’ from ‘egg’ by connecting with Easter, they might then go to Easter bunny, or ‘rabbit’ because he’s associated with the holiday and is the one that hides the eggs for the egg hunts.

Fun fact: In polish language, backyard is a green terrain belonging to the appartament building usually having a playground for all kids in the area and some green, sometimes entire garbage storage(like a shack with big bins for collecting trash from 1-3 appartament buildings) and stuff like that and it's partially a public space but managed by administrators of those appartament buildings. in case of a house, what americans call backyard, we call a garden even if you don't have flowers there. It can be a vegetable patch, it can be just grass or whatever but you are going to the garden no matter what it looks like.

Lots of Americans have backyard gardens they walk through. I have fruit and veg gardens in the back, along with a small orchard. They aren't exclusive to flowers and front yards...

This was another great session of Codenames! Although I don't normally enjoy it when Ze struggles, watching him lose his mind in this game is so very entertaining. XD I also love the discussions and admissions that can arise from this game, such as the vegetable/fruit discussions, the garden/backyard cultural debacle, how is every word on the board kinky, Skadj being secretly a Brony, and Ze not knowing that Catwoman carried a whip, lol.

She literally said "a garden is not in a backyard." She may have been saying "here in america, the garden is not necessarily equivalent to the backyard," or "the garden where you grow stuff doesn't go in the backyard," but either way you can tell she's just upset (rightfully so or not, i'll leave that decision up to you.)

Some people have it in the front, some on the roof, but most gardens I know and see are in the backyard. She said several other things where i was just shaking my head. She is entitled to her opinion, but I get annoyed when she goes off on other people for saying something that to her isn't right when she is actually wrong. She can be very ignorant at times.

The garden argument shows how uncultured this group is, a garden is a garden. Flower beds are flower beds.
Gardens are used to grow fruit and vegetables.
Gardens can also be used to grow flowers, but a garden is a designated area for the specific purpose of gardening.
IE; Gardens are in the back yard most of the time.
Flower beds are in the front yard most of the time.
The clue is vegetable. They don't click a single vegetable. They're all correct choices.
I have lived in suburbia across the US and 98% of the gardens I saw were in the backyard. The ONLY 2 times I saw front yard gardens were communal gardens.

20:00... to me "wood" makes the most sense. Chests are made of wood, there's such thing as a wooden duck, wood can be used as fuel and for spring, it's a bit more of a stretch but Spring I think budding trees and they're made of wood. IDK, I feel like that would have worked better
The garden thing is both dumb and confusing because depending on where you live, you would think different things. Usually the front yard is just that.. a yard with maybe a few flowers in planters along the side of the front of the house and maybe the sides... whereas the garden is either flowers or food in the backyard. It's placed there so that anyone who walks by can't just grab something and walk off with it.

While yes she did disappear in the Pacific, there is another triangle zone that has been known to have the same effect as the Bermuda triangle. So linking the two isn’t entirely wrong.

Well you see when your country has less population density than Madagascar, you have more land to have gardens. So where you are living is not in the UK.
In the US people grow flower gardens more often then veggies and what not so putting your flower garden in the front yard is very reasonable that way your neighbors can see your pretty flowers too
@@weinteruptth.1479 it's highly dependent on where you live. In more rural US areas where people have larger yards, veg/fruit is common. I have multiple backyard gardens for that purpose.
@@Tvd97 exactly. I feel like the “garden” aspects of the front yard is mostly just the landscaping because that’s usually all that it is. And the garden is in the backyard because it typically has the fruits/veggies and it’s it a more isolated area that stands out from the backyard landscaping

Propnight could have worked for Duck, Chest, fuel, and spring. The only problem word I saw was trip for that one, but it still was a stronger correlation than aerobics.
Trying to link four words together with a very strenuous connection is always a mistake, unless the opponent has like a single word left. Do a safe one (I'd have gone with screw for Duck, Spring and Chest) and put the pressure on the other team. You're way more likely to help the enemy team than win otherwise, as we saw here. They barely managed to connect the two easiest words, they could easily have missed the third one.
The word screw probably loses the game immediately with the black word being rabbit, just saying.S

I’ve played beanboozled once, and I won just because I got every bad bean but I chewed and swallowed them without gagging or reacting much. They didn’t taste good, but they weren’t terrible enough to warrant throwing up or anything. I was mostly just impressed that they got pretty accurate flavors. I may also be slightly immune to the vomit flavored bean because I used to throw up every other day as a child.

Fruits come from the flower of a plant or tree, and contain seeds. Vegetables come from the other parts of a plant which can include roots, stems, and leaves. So botanically, herbs are vegetables.

I'm Texan. I knew right away what the deal was with the Backyard 0 play - I knew it had to do with the Brits being wrong with their usage of Garden versus Yard from the beginning and it made things all the more funny, especially when they figured out what went wrong xD

sorry ze, your wrong, this is NOT how fruits and veggies are classified, its entirely classified on its SEEDS, its a fruit if it has a ton of small seeds inside of it, and a veggie if it has 1 large seed or the thing itself is its own seed (like potatoes and carrots) or if the seeds are outside of it or if it has multiple seeds inside but very few, like green beans are a veggie and they grow off a plant like tomatoes are and tomatoes are a fruit
Talking about the bean boozled, the dog food one is incredibly bad. I've never actually tasted it, but we were trying them at work one day and someone else got the dog food one. The SMELL alone was bad enough and spread throughout the whole room and I couldn't do it.
