I think it's more 'unsettling' than 'scary' and saying it's not a horror game isn't doing it justice. It's not going to make anyone jump up in fright (other than the one jumpscare you pointed out) but things like the story of Yonaka and her brother are creepy.
If I made a horror game I would put a jump scare warning and not actually have a jump scare so people are on edge expecting a jumpscare the entire time
To me, MOON is an allegory for someone who uses RPG maker, and finds that any kind of asset he tries to add to the default tileset looks wrong and sticks out horribly, so he makes everything into a mess so that everything will blend. Or someone who tries to ape oldschool rpgs and isn't able to recreate them, eitherway that seems to be the point of the ending, where that one leftover head shows up. In his own words: "Better to reign in Hell" = Better to use your own, bad but original style of art "than serve in Heaven" = than to use a great, but bland and limiting art style "...motherfuckerrrrrrr!" = motherfuckerrrrrrr
I thought of it more as an commentary on the concept of perfection, but heck what do i know, all i know is that i think that this game is amazing, and that i commented on an video which is 5 years old
This game is pretty much a reverse Cerebrus Syndrome: It starts out serious and horrifying, but gradually turns silly and outlandish! But yeah, that Blood Cavern music can be pretty unsettling! ^-^
Space Funeral is not a horror game, it's a parody/pastiche of the JRPG genre. The mecanics are the same, the esthetics are completely different, which is the whole point of the game. Everything is made absurd and obscene by intent. Philip walkcycle is funny to me, he's not sad because of some backstory thingy, it's the form he has now. There is replayability as well, little well thought game design stuff, like how someone in scum village hints you at something you can do in lion village way later in the game, or the legend that talks about a mysterious thing called PURPLE DRANK, and there is actually a way to get it. ( I liked the game so much I had to find it)
It's actually a lot funnier imo. The first game had Bibles, Old Movies, and Magic Eye Pictures, which were strong against criminals, ghosts, and animals respectively. Earth Birth had Magnets, Calculators, and Mirrors, which were strong against robots, libertarians, and lab experiments respectively.
I don't necessarily agree with your interpretation of the story, but that's okay. Interesting to hear a new perspective on a story for a game I love so much. It's even inspired me to work on a similar style of game.
I loved this game, the pokemon like battles with the criminals, the music, the humor and the art style were perfect. my only problem was that I had a glitch that made the font nearly unreadable, so I played through the entire game struggling to read the text
I've heard nothing about Space Funeral, but I see the name every once in a while. I'm going to download it and play it right now, completely blind, and post an update when I'm done. I paused this video before it even started. Here I go.
Something was pouring from his mouth. He examined his sleeve. Blood? Blood. Crimson, copper-smelling blood. His blood. Blood. Blood. Blood. And bits of sick.
Honestly, only the creepy ass poetry in the boat song (have to wait a lot for this one) and the blood cavern were the only scary things, most of this game seemed like one giant black comedy comic book and I honestly find the horror kind of enjoyable and funny. :p Lots of surrealism in rpg maker horror games... some are typical supernatural stuff, but many are just... odd. :p Off, Hello Charlotte, White Sky, Yume Nikki, End Roll (the last two being justified with dream worlds. :p), this game, etc... Anyways, the music and aesthetic are my favorite parts of the game, it's too short and easy otherwise, and I don't really understand the plot. :p
Wow man, I have been watching all of your videos on RPG Maker horror games and I have to say these are brilliantly done and edited! Keep up the good work!
The developer mentioned having been inspired by the 1989 NES game Monster Party but it also reminds me of this game released in the 80s on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum called Soft and Cuddly. Being the developer's Irish I wouldn't doubt that he had a ZX Spectrum as a kid (as they were very popular in Europe and especially in the UK and adjacent countries) and was inspired by it. They both have a sort of surreal and gruesome artstyle. I really like it.
NitroRad It's a good game, the story is pretty heavy in some places and is a decently long play with a wide variety of puzzles. However; it does rely more-so on jump scares and similar tactics as opposed to creepy ambiance (in both audio and visual form) and tension that the majority of the games you've played/reviewed on the platform have.
NitroRad If you read the diary of ellen (the prequel written by the maker of the game) it explains a lot. The diary of ellen is so well written it is one of the best written and best books I've ever read. It makes the game just so much better. Also the ost is phenominal, so please give it a play sometime. But absolutely required you get the true end with ellens knife and read the diary of ellen.
I like how this game decided to use Les Railles Denudes in the soundtrack. If anybody knows about the band let’s just say it has some fascinating lore behind it especially the bassist of the band.
Honestly this review format from back in the day is in a way perfect for a parody horror game, such as being done as a serious review compared to something as joyful and full of effort as we have nowadays, and in a way it fits. I'm saying this aged well. It's very interesting!
Holy crap. Fantomah is in this game. For those who don't know fantomah is the floating blue skull with blond hair and she is a golden age female superhero made by Fletcher Hanks and comenly associated with another Fletcher Hanks creation stardust the super wizard. On top of that she the first female super hero of the golden age and the second strongest superhero of the golden age tied with the eye and the most powerful hero is stardust
More than anything, I feel like Space Funeral is a meta-commentary on the RPGMaker community (and apparently this isn't the first game like this by this author). The sprites are almost comically simple and jumpy, with little attention given to color composition or adherence to any sort of preexisting fiction. It kinda just does its own thing, and as you get closer to the source of the corruption, this style becomes more and more obvious. This isn't a jab at the game itself, though, and the artstyle feels deliberately rough and simplistic. As you approach the City of Forms, the style of the game further devolves, with clashing tilesets donning bright and discordant colors, and it climaxes with MOON. Not only is MOON's boss "arena" simply a series of colored stripes, but the sprite itself is extremely jumpy and displays clashing simple colors, much like Phillip in battle. Once MOON is defeated, the world returns to "normal", and the corruption is warded off for good. But what exactly did Phillip just do? Although the new world is described as "perfect", it's simply the default RPG Maker 2003 tileset. The unprofessional and unique tileset has been shrugged off in favor of the perfectly generic default. This feels very deliberate, and seems like a jab against the RPG Maker community for shaming those who use the default tiles, and calling into question how much better those custom tiles and animations would be compared to the original sprites. It's not a very deep argument, but the execution of Space Funeral as a satirical work is extremely clean.
i know this video is ancient and the chances of you seeing this comment are virtually nil, but have you heard of anthology of the killer? it's the newest series by thecatamites which is entirely focused on horror this time around! it's incredibly charming, unique, funny as hell and is now one of my favorite series of video games ever. i feel like it'd make a great fit for the channel + i think it deserves more of an audience :o)

He spoiled the story (what is happening), not the plot (why is it happening).
I mean, "go defeat the evil guy" isn't really something that interesting anyway
the idea of the 'Perfect City' and the 'City of Forms' seems to draw a lot from Plato's theory of forms
I never thought I'd see an actual review of this game.

Nitro you should do a review on Space Funeral the legend of earth birth! Its a fan game that the creator liked so much he deemed it cannon
It's not as good as the first, but it's more difficult (look at that as you will) and still definitely still worth a look
It's actually a lot funnier imo.
The first game had Bibles, Old Movies, and Magic Eye Pictures, which were strong against criminals, ghosts, and animals respectively.
