A crucial mistranslation had her saying she would not allow The Batter "to destroy the one we had created." The correct translation is that she would not allow him "to destroy the one who created us," (full translation is "I will not let you lay a hand on the son that brought us into this world").

I personally really like the theory that the reason Hugo created the world was because he's chronically and severely ill, stuck in a hospital. The 'batter' and the 'queen' are exaggerations to represent his parents, where the mother only wanted to keep him alive, while the father wanted him to not live a life that was just torture. When the batter purifies the spectres (negative thoughts, basically.) he's attempting to rid his kid of his personal demons he can't understand yet, and when he defeats Hugo himself it's him letting go of the idea that he could be saved while prolonging his suffering. Fighting the Queen was a representation of their ongoing argument of if they should even bother keeping him alive. I'm not exactly sure/can't remember while writing this what the meaning behind other side characters were, but one other thing was that each... Element? Resource, was something that Hugo saw every day in the hospital. There's gas, which could either be supplied oxygen or medicine, meat, which is basic hospital meals at their finest, plastic, which is what nearly everything in his sterilized room is made of, and sugar, which can be interpreted as the candy and gifts he receives and probably becomes dependent on to find enjoyment in his every day life. As for the method for gathering them, I'm assuming that Hugo is young enough to not know the processes of how things are made, which we ourselves know because we're 1) older, and 2) not confined in a hospital. He then fills in those blanks with whatever his imagination (in its unstable and ill state) can come up with.

Actually I kinda love the Batter sprite, mostly because his expression is so weird and undefined that I could interpret and project as much as I liked. Weird shit happening? He has a puzzled expression. Boring shit happening? He's impatient. Especially in the last arc, when we had to kill poor Hugo I SWEAR I thought his expression was one of... Pain. But that's just me LMAO.
(Spoiler, kinda) The interpretation that the batter is the father and the Queen is the mother had been said to be false (translation errors). The child, Hugo, had actually created the queen and the batter to replace his actual parents. Also, the batter looks so monstrous when the perspective change because this is when the puppeteer saw the batter as the bad guy (when switching sides), thus making him appear that way.
the entire game is remnants of the comatose son's brain interpreting the past, the present, and his inevitable future. notice that the only character to enter this world that isn't a ghost is the batter. everyone else seemed to be there ever since the story began. all the inhabitants were told to be pieces of the boy's early life and how he thought the world worked. the thing i find interesting is the language he gives the main boss characters and their behaviors. they say and do things the boy imagines they did daily based on his short encounters. his father however comes off as emotionless and completely un-designed in comparison to everyone else. he's an invader. he's the unknown variable to his own dying son. the thing i like about this interpretation is that it explains how the boy interprets the unknown and vague uncertainty of death itself when parts of the boy's brain are purified. the design of those enemies, the design of the anti-levels. it all feels like the boy is trying desperately to make some sense of complete emptiness and destruction itself. only 1 character lives on in the head of the dying child within the library (that is if the judge does die) which keeps to himself and tries to call out in the distance in the soundtrack. listen to his echoing call and how all the dead are whispering to whatever lingers there. (if you didn't find this one character, he's in the village area of purified zone 2 near the void) i wonder what that one lonely resident thinks and does with his existence....
It's funny, he doesn't even actually reference the infamous mistranslated line - the Queen is mistakenly translated as saying "I will not let you lay a hand on the son we have brought into this world" but in fact says "the son _who brought us into_ this world". I think Nitro's interpretation is a smidge off, though - it's the _Batter_ who's supposed to be the father, hence why the Queen refers to him (remember, the Queen has no idea we exist) as "my love".
I can understand the thing with the translation, but what about the monster thing? Why doesnt the judge change too to reflect you fighting or playing as him?
I like The Batter's portrait after rewatching this. At first I thought it looked silly, but after learning of his true nature (kinda) he seems snobby, like hes looking down his nose at everyone, and I think that quite suits him.
I love the Batter's in-game portrait, I can't really think of a better way to present his strange, unwavering resolve and simultaneous lack of apparent morals or cares.
My interpretation is that this is an analogue for a kid dying of sickness (smoke inhalation or metal poisoning maybe), the mother wants him alive and the father wants to put him out of his misery, but he loves the child, so he has to become emotionally despondent which manifests in the batter. The final room is shaped like a brain-spinal chord with a switch at the end, killing the child removes the sickness, thus purifying him.
I think Hugo is suffering from some kind of cancer. Smoke, Red Meat, Metal, Plastic. All these things are known to be carcinogens. And as a child Hugo is just addicted to sugar.
Rhino 'n Chips I forget where, but somewhere in The Room Hugo had written 'My Father gave me pills today.' or something like that, which could also be referencing to the disease he has. (and his player sound is a child coughing)
I hope the OFF translation 3.0 project gets finished, there are some very important revisions to the dialogue that can change your ideas and perspectives on key parts of the game. Which is especially important considering how ambiguous the story is.
I'm a person who betatested and little helped with Polish translation for OFF (I think that is one OFF best ones) based on original version (FR). And that is truth that in older version (2.0) of EN translation (used in this video) have lots of mistranslations or sometimes the translator had too much creativity. Mainly the famous relationships puppeteer-puppet for Batter and Player was ones that made many misunderstandings about game plot, because this is one prefect example of the translator's excessive creativity. Such a words in the context of the Batter doesn’t appear until the end, when the Judge says it to the Player. About starting scene in game is written in Judge dialogue that, you as a soul you take control of Batter's body. Yes I can talk about this game and some aspects and interesting facts that mostly my friend found, while doing most of the job for translation. I only smashed some little bugs with another testers. And yes English version really need that overhaul to fix many mistakes of older translation. And also Polish translation inspired creators of English translation to also translate some non translated graphics in game for 3.0 (like ones seen on scenes where Elsen talks about elements or calendar pages).
Just about everyone has already pointed out the *major* plot issue concerning the mistranslation... ...But damn, the "mistranslation" makes for one interesting and batshite crazy "alternate universe," or whatever you'd like to call it.
it's amazing how many games OFF has inspired. i mean, the design for Papyrus in Undertale was in fact inspired by the design of Dedan! this is one of my favourite games of all time. there's a certain charm to it that nothing else had matched.
That's pretty interesting, considering Papyrus' whole personality is that he's trying to be someone like Dedan but he's too caring and compassionate to actually follow through with anything.

I remember at the time I played this the big theory was that what is being turned "Off" is this terminally ill child's life support. This world of near-dead and fearful people, forcibly kept running by tyrants who could be said to be the "Doctors" keeping him alive.The Queen, unwilling to let this place go even in the face of all its suffering. The Judge, perhaps the Batter's own morality, the inner struggle between parental instinct to protect, and the desire to end the suffering. Of course that's just one way of looking at it.

OFF is the critically acclaimed French surreal adventure RPG made by Mortis Ghost in 2008. The game was translated into English in 2011 and is considered a gem among indie adventure RPGs.
Actually there's one thing that Nitro forgot to mention, but I guess i'll explain it for fun: During any point of the game, you can go back to zones you've already purified. By going back to a purified zone, the entire zone is black and white, with no NPC's, as if the world was dead. You'll also encounter new enemies called Secretaries, which are pretty frickin creepy, and have different designs depending on what purified zone you go back to. They are also stronger depending on if you're in zone 1, zone 2, or zone 3, with the maximum stats of: 2,600 HP, 270 Attack, 100 Defense,150 Esprit, and lastly, 170 agility, making them probably one of the most dangerous enemies in the game. However, you can get some pretty good loot from them as well, though personally I'd recommend before going back to one of the zones that have the strongest versions that you're prepared. I haven't played OFF myself but I dont think I'd wanna mess with 270 attack damage and 2,600 health without preparation.
2017 off video is always a blessing! good review by the way i enjoyed it >< i believe that OFF is a game about a father's journey in the child's perspective. the father does not have a happy family, and he blames himself for it, because he himself is afraid. i feel like the residence of the zones are his "true" personality. the specters might be an interpretation of "a problem." and the guardians are just parts of his fatherly trait (hardworking, nurturing, guidance/obedience). he might have tried his best to be a good father, but Hugo (the child) might not realize that and thought that his parents did not love him. but they were trying their best, including the queen (or the mother) who mentioned a "birthday party" several times in the final battle. i know that there's a "mistranslation" of "hugo is not supposed to be created from batter/queen it's the other way around." but since it's in the perspective of a child, that would make sense right? it could also means that hugo is the only reason why the batter/queen is still in their unhappy marriage. i found another evidence too: remember the comic "panic in ballville" from the room that Hugo was given to? well in that mini game, the villain is a a baseball player aka the batter. and with the way Hugo implying he doesn't like his father,that might be the reason why we're playing as the batter. because the father is the "bad guy" whose slowly killing parts of himself, his wife, and then his own child. before his moral sense kicked in aka the judge, and that's up to the player to decide the ending. "hence nothing is left except for our regrets."

Since it's been a while, I'd like to add something since Mortis streamed the game on OFF's 10th anniversary and answered some questions. *-Spoilers ahead-* The Batter was created as soon as you put your name in, meaning that the only interactions he had with Hugo and Vader Eloha (the queen) was the ending. He also states that the way the characters appear in battle and tend to differ from the real world (Enoch being larger in battle than real scale) is due to a perspective shift.
i heard somewhere, that sans was based OFF of zacharie, the game's merchant, who actually impersonates all of the merchants in-game -nice cream guy sans, etc-

I think it's a surreal metaphor for a more grounded story of a kid suffering from a degenerative disease, and his father wanting to put him out of his misery against the wishes of everyone else in the kid's life, and even the kid itself. The Batter would forcefully assert his wishes on the people important to the child until they all started to follow his thinking. Perhaps the Elsen becoming Burnt are the child's cells becoming malignant. Maybe the Judge is a literal judge, who the Batter sought legal advice from and who would eventually confront the Batter after realizing he'd gone too far, and attempt to put a stop to his insistance on ending the child's life by questioning the legality of his methods. That switch at the end can't seem like anything to me but a literal power switch on a life support device.
I have been a huge OFF fan for years now, and yes the battle system is absolutely garbage. It's more of an experience than a traditional game in my opinion. It's the atmosphere and art direction that make it special.
I think the most popular fan theory for this game is that the child is your child.. on life support. The merchant is thought to be the doctor who is telling the mother and father that their child's health is failing and he is most likely not going to make it. The child was frail from birth and often spent much time in the hospital where his mother would visit him but his father stayed away. The father seemed wracked with the grief of bills piling up to take care of the child and while the child was stuck at the hospital he came up with this world. You're the batter.. the father.. fighting his way through his own determination to do what he not only thinks is right but.. what he can afford to do. But.. that's just a fan theory.
As a french player i can clear some of the french translation things ! The batter do seems to be Hugo's father, and there's an interresting thing that another french youtuber pointed ou "battre" in french also mean beating (up) So the "batteur" could describe a person that beats up another

You made one big mistake (understandable since it results from the biggest mistranslation in the game): Hugo is NOT the Batter's actual son. Hugo is the Batter's (and the Queen's) father. At some point Hugo's actual parents disappeared after an apocalyptic world-ending event. These two are thought to be Zacharie and his girlfriend, Sucre, since one of Hugo's calendar papers mentions the former as a "friend" and Zacharie finds the music box playing Hugo's theme "dear to [his] heart". Using an old comic, Hugo used his creative powers (which he would use to shape the elements and, at the Queen's later behest, the spectres) to create new parent figures: the Queen and the Batter, based on Boxxer characters Daisy and Ballman, respectively. We can surmise that the Batter was actually the more attentive parent as "Papa" is referenced most often as having direct interaction with Hugo, and by giving him direct support (through pills to fight Hugo's sickliness). At some point, however, the Queen took custody of Hugo and made him a guardian, keeping him alive but constantly sickly while also neglected. It's assumed that the Batter, in turn, simply left. Oh, and also the Bad Batter has been confirmed by Mortis Ghost to be just the way you and Pablo see the Batter, not the Batter's "true form". It's a perspective shift, as opposed to a physical transformation.
Yeah there was an old interview Mortis Ghost and Alias had where Mortis outright confirms this. This is in truth what OFF is really about, whether or not this is the only correct theory out there is still up for debate. There is still a lot of things that are left ambiguous is OFF. It's possible OFF takes place after an apocalyptic event killed all of humanity and made way for the Elsen, *genetically modified humans* , to colonize a broken world with smoke as the substitute for air upon other weird things. The only thing is that theory doesn't line up with stuff like "Stay In Your Coma" or "Brain Plague," there's also the elements. Some people think that the baby is on life support and the smoke is what's keeping him alive in his coma, the plastic could be a reference to the tubes connected to him or have something to do with what kind of prescription his doctors are giving him, the metal could refer to his "artificial metal lungs" or what he is contained in, meat could be the baby's diet, and sugar could be a metaphor for a Placebo (in simpler words, a pain killer). There's also the theory about the rogue T-Cell that kills all the corrupted blood cells in order to completely eradicate the Specter virus in the baby's body >:). The Batter is not the baby's father, but when people say that he is, they could also be technically correct because a father figure is still a metaphorical father. I know so many theories and interpretations about this game, and almost all of them kind of answer 1 or 2 different questions of the hundreds of questions this game has to offer. I personally thought the kid was suffering from Naegleria Floweri. I'm not new to OFF, but I still feel like no theory I came across answered literally every question about the game, which ended up being kind of satisfying in an odd way for me personally. I like the fact that OFF seems like an unsolvable puzzle you can come back to after 5 years and still learn something new or have a change in perspective. For me that just goes to show how genius the game is and cement it as a timeless classic. A single game can mean a lot of different things to different people. Ultimately Mortis Ghost said it's up to your interpretation, so at this rate the game will never be a closed case. If you want to elaborate on your side of the story and how you personally found this out, I'd like to know because maybe I will learn something new. (although I'm doubtful at this point because I feel like I've almost read close to everything about this game)
the game make more sense in french. that wasn't the queen, but the child who created everything. the child even created the batter and the queen. you killed your creator, because he was a child who didn't knew what he was doing, creating a world that is disfonctional. that game is wierder than you experienced it, i wish you were french, because i saw so many mistake in the translation plotwise, and normally i rather play the english version... but the french one was better, because it was what Mortis Ghost had in the head, while the translation is only the perspective of the one who translated it. anyway, i dont think you will learn french because of an indi game... but it is kind of a shame it is translated that way. it is like they took only what they liked, but i think they didn't do it on purpose.

My interpretation is that this is an analogue for a kid dying of sickness (smoke inhalation or metal poisoning maybe), the mother wants him alive and the father wants to put him out of his misery, but he loves the child, so he has to become emotionally despondent which manifests in the batter. The final room is shaped like a brain-spinal chord with a switch at the end, killing the child removes the sickness, thus purifying him.
I think Hugo is suffering from some kind of cancer.
Smoke, Red Meat, Metal, Plastic. All these things are known to be carcinogens. And as a child Hugo is just addicted to sugar.
There is in the ost a song hat's called brain plague, maybe that's his disease.

I hope the OFF translation 3.0 project gets finished, there are some very important revisions to the dialogue that can change your ideas and perspectives on key parts of the game. Which is especially important considering how ambiguous the story is.
I'm a person who betatested and little helped with Polish translation for OFF (I think that is one OFF best ones) based on original version (FR). And that is truth that in older version (2.0) of EN translation (used in this video) have lots of mistranslations or sometimes the translator had too much creativity. Mainly the famous relationships puppeteer-puppet for Batter and Player was ones that made many misunderstandings about game plot, because this is one prefect example of the translator's excessive creativity. Such a words in the context of the Batter doesn’t appear until the end, when the Judge says it to the Player. About starting scene in game is written in Judge dialogue that, you as a soul you take control of Batter's body. Yes I can talk about this game and some aspects and interesting facts that mostly my friend found, while doing most of the job for translation. I only smashed some little bugs with another testers. And yes English version really need that overhaul to fix many mistakes of older translation. And also Polish translation inspired creators of English translation to also translate some non translated graphics in game for 3.0 (like ones seen on scenes where Elsen talks about elements or calendar pages).

it's amazing how many games OFF has inspired. i mean, the design for Papyrus in Undertale was in fact inspired by the design of Dedan! this is one of my favourite games of all time. there's a certain charm to it that nothing else had matched.
That's pretty interesting, considering Papyrus' whole personality is that he's trying to be someone like Dedan but he's too caring and compassionate to actually follow through with anything.

The Judge, perhaps the Batter's own morality, the inner struggle between parental instinct to protect, and the desire to end the suffering. Of course that's just one way of looking at it.

OFF is the critically acclaimed French surreal adventure RPG made by Mortis Ghost in 2008.
The game was translated into English in 2011 and is considered a gem among indie adventure RPGs.
Actually there's one thing that Nitro forgot to mention, but I guess i'll explain it for fun:
During any point of the game, you can go back to zones you've already purified. By going back to a purified zone, the entire zone is black and white, with no NPC's, as if the world was dead. You'll also encounter new enemies called Secretaries, which are pretty frickin creepy, and have different designs depending on what purified zone you go back to. They are also stronger depending on if you're in zone 1, zone 2, or zone 3, with the maximum stats of:
2,600 HP, 270 Attack, 100 Defense,150 Esprit, and lastly, 170 agility, making them probably one of the most dangerous enemies in the game. However, you can get some pretty good loot from them as well, though personally I'd recommend before going back to one of the zones that have the strongest versions that you're prepared. I haven't played OFF myself but I dont think I'd wanna mess with 270 attack damage and 2,600 health without preparation.

i believe that OFF is a game about a father's journey in the child's perspective. the father does not have a happy family, and he blames himself for it, because he himself is afraid. i feel like the residence of the zones are his "true" personality. the specters might be an interpretation of "a problem." and the guardians are just parts of his fatherly trait (hardworking, nurturing, guidance/obedience).
he might have tried his best to be a good father, but Hugo (the child) might not realize that and thought that his parents did not love him. but they were trying their best, including the queen (or the mother) who mentioned a "birthday party" several times in the final battle.
i know that there's a "mistranslation" of "hugo is not supposed to be created from batter/queen it's the other way around." but since it's in the perspective of a child, that would make sense right? it could also means that hugo is the only reason why the batter/queen is still in their unhappy marriage.
i found another evidence too: remember the comic "panic in ballville" from the room that Hugo was given to? well in that mini game, the villain is a a baseball player aka the batter. and with the way Hugo implying he doesn't like his father,that might be the reason why we're playing as the batter. because the father is the "bad guy" whose slowly killing parts of himself, his wife, and then his own child.
before his moral sense kicked in aka the judge, and that's up to the player to decide the ending.

Since it's been a while, I'd like to add something since Mortis streamed the game on OFF's 10th anniversary and answered some questions. *-Spoilers ahead-*
The Batter was created as soon as you put your name in, meaning that the only interactions he had with Hugo and Vader Eloha (the queen) was the ending.
He also states that the way the characters appear in battle and tend to differ from the real world (Enoch being larger in battle than real scale) is due to a perspective shift.

I think it's a surreal metaphor for a more grounded story of a kid suffering from a degenerative disease, and his father wanting to put him out of his misery against the wishes of everyone else in the kid's life, and even the kid itself. The Batter would forcefully assert his wishes on the people important to the child until they all started to follow his thinking. Perhaps the Elsen becoming Burnt are the child's cells becoming malignant. Maybe the Judge is a literal judge, who the Batter sought legal advice from and who would eventually confront the Batter after realizing he'd gone too far, and attempt to put a stop to his insistance on ending the child's life by questioning the legality of his methods. That switch at the end can't seem like anything to me but a literal power switch on a life support device.

I have been a huge OFF fan for years now, and yes the battle system is absolutely garbage. It's more of an experience than a traditional game in my opinion. It's the atmosphere and art direction that make it special.
I think the most popular fan theory for this game is that the child is your child.. on life support.
The merchant is thought to be the doctor who is telling the mother and father that their child's health is failing and he is most likely not going to make it. The child was frail from birth and often spent much time in the hospital where his mother would visit him but his father stayed away. The father seemed wracked with the grief of bills piling up to take care of the child and while the child was stuck at the hospital he came up with this world. You're the batter.. the father.. fighting his way through his own determination to do what he not only thinks is right but.. what he can afford to do.
But.. that's just a fan theory.

You made one big mistake (understandable since it results from the biggest mistranslation in the game):
Hugo is NOT the Batter's actual son. Hugo is the Batter's (and the Queen's) father.
At some point Hugo's actual parents disappeared after an apocalyptic world-ending event. These two are thought to be Zacharie and his girlfriend, Sucre, since one of Hugo's calendar papers mentions the former as a "friend" and Zacharie finds the music box playing Hugo's theme "dear to [his] heart".
Using an old comic, Hugo used his creative powers (which he would use to shape the elements and, at the Queen's later behest, the spectres) to create new parent figures: the Queen and the Batter, based on Boxxer characters Daisy and Ballman, respectively.
We can surmise that the Batter was actually the more attentive parent as "Papa" is referenced most often as having direct interaction with Hugo, and by giving him direct support (through pills to fight Hugo's sickliness). At some point, however, the Queen took custody of Hugo and made him a guardian, keeping him alive but constantly sickly while also neglected. It's assumed that the Batter, in turn, simply left.
Oh, and also the Bad Batter has been confirmed by Mortis Ghost to be just the way you and Pablo see the Batter, not the Batter's "true form". It's a perspective shift, as opposed to a physical transformation.

Once you take that theme into account, the entirity of the game's world building becomes very apparent.
Yeah there was an old interview Mortis Ghost and Alias had where Mortis outright confirms this. This is in truth what OFF is really about, whether or not this is the only correct theory out there is still up for debate. There is still a lot of things that are left ambiguous is OFF. It's possible OFF takes place after an apocalyptic event killed all of humanity and made way for the Elsen, *genetically modified humans* , to colonize a broken world with smoke as the substitute for air upon other weird things. The only thing is that theory doesn't line up with stuff like "Stay In Your Coma" or "Brain Plague," there's also the elements. Some people think that the baby is on life support and the smoke is what's keeping him alive in his coma, the plastic could be a reference to the tubes connected to him or have something to do with what kind of prescription his doctors are giving him, the metal could refer to his "artificial metal lungs" or what he is contained in, meat could be the baby's diet, and sugar could be a metaphor for a Placebo (in simpler words, a pain killer). There's also the theory about the rogue T-Cell that kills all the corrupted blood cells in order to completely eradicate the Specter virus in the baby's body >:). The Batter is not the baby's father, but when people say that he is, they could also be technically correct because a father figure is still a metaphorical father. I know so many theories and interpretations about this game, and almost all of them kind of answer 1 or 2 different questions of the hundreds of questions this game has to offer. I personally thought the kid was suffering from Naegleria Floweri.
I'm not new to OFF, but I still feel like no theory I came across answered literally every question about the game, which ended up being kind of satisfying in an odd way for me personally. I like the fact that OFF seems like an unsolvable puzzle you can come back to after 5 years and still learn something new or have a change in perspective. For me that just goes to show how genius the game is and cement it as a timeless classic. A single game can mean a lot of different things to different people. Ultimately Mortis Ghost said it's up to your interpretation, so at this rate the game will never be a closed case.
If you want to elaborate on your side of the story and how you personally found this out, I'd like to know because maybe I will learn something new. (although I'm doubtful at this point because I feel like I've almost read close to everything about this game)

that game is wierder than you experienced it, i wish you were french, because i saw so many mistake in the translation plotwise, and normally i rather play the english version... but the french one was better, because it was what Mortis Ghost had in the head, while the translation is only the perspective of the one who translated it.
anyway, i dont think you will learn french because of an indi game... but it is kind of a shame it is translated that way. it is like they took only what they liked, but i think they didn't do it on purpose.
