  • Pulling and disassembling hydraulic cylinders out of a john deere 710d backhoe . The quality of the video towards the end is bad , due to my breath fogging up the lens .

    I was a precision grinder for years. We chrome plated and ground a mountain of hydraulic rams over the years. Keep up the good work. Your videos are very informative. You do a great job.

    This is the second Hyd cyl rebuild I've watched. And I am now FULLY CONVINCED that I want absolutely nothing do with this...........LOL. You guys make it look easy. So in a word the techs from JG Moore in Wilmington will be more than welcome to continue to repack my cylinders.

    I just gave you the 1000th like on this. My 3165 Massey Ferguson with a 222 backhoe has the same style gland/rod bushing on it. I suspected an internal snap ring and you confirmed my suspicions! I was a millwright from 1987-2012 and never had the displeasure of this style gland/bushing on a cylinder. Now "The Ferg" will dig again (without leaving a trail of oil)

    I've done several of them that have loctite on piston bolt. Heat until the loctite lets the smoke out and they always come off. Keep up the good work Warren!

    I have a cat 416 backhoe and the front bucket only lifts halfway with a full bucket. When it's empty, it lifts fully no problem. All the other
    controls are fine. I watch your channel all the time and thought I'd ask for some help. Thanks for posting your work and happy you got such a
    great deal on your new service truck.

      Does it leak down with bucket raised ? Could be a cylinder leaking internally , linkage from joystick to valve problem , maybe a weak pump . I would say probably leaking cylinder.

    a 2 part epoxy like JB Weld works good also.Let it harden overnight and sand smooth. Did my JCB stabilizer cylinder years ago, still holding good.

    Those orange rings you pulled out were left there from the last guy who put kits In cylinders. They go in the groove so snap ring will slide past. They come with seal kits.

      The orange ring is also required to pull the piston out, there are a couple rings that will drop into that slot

    I was using the nut to drive the gland in a little bit and it pulled some treads on the gland on me. great video

    There is a place in Orlando, fl that will re chrome the rod. We had one of our stabilizers rods done and haven't had any issue. The cost was like around 100 buck if I remember correctly.

    I spent a week trying to take out one of those rusted welded snap rings off on one of those cilinders it came out in little pieces 🙃

    Warren back in the day I use to see my dad take a brass ball valve with an air fitting on it and screw it into the outlet port . He would crack the valve a few times with air and it would push the cylinder right out. I do not know if that is good or bad but it seemed to work !! He has been known to do some sqeechy stuff 😂

    The number one contamination source of hydraulic systems is cylinder rods. I'll put 5 bucks that's why the oil is milky. Unfortunately scuffing the rods will make the seal hold a bit longer, but will leave pockets fordirt and moisture to enter

    a brass punch will help with pushing the guide back so you can get the snap ring out. its what i do working for a Deere dealer

    Also a 3/4 torque multiplier would be very handy for you on many occasions , I don’t know how much they are but I doubt they are cheap

    back in the early 80's when i was running a 355 komatsu dozer, we had to send one of the lift cylinders out to be rechromed--it was a $1,000 back then. so i guess the price hasn't gone up that bad in 30 some yrs.

    Warren try putting a 3ft piece of 4x4 between rod and the ground as a brace then use 1”drive pull bar and 6ft of pipe on the bolt or nut that usually helps to get them loose as well

    I’ve done the same thing cleaning up the cylinder rods and was taught a trick that lasts a long time …. Clean the high spots and fill the scratches with super glue and instant cure spray sand again and they don’t seep…..

    That shop is pretty average, in my experience. Our place (equipment dealer) is only about 18 foot high ceiling so lots of booms / bodies cant be raised enough to work under them. Those jobs end up being done outside - rain / cold / snow or whatever doesn't matter. Creeper work can suck 'cause the concrete is deteriorated and is as smooth as a driveway made of #57 gravel in lots of places.
    I have not used the service yet, but a hydraulics repair place we use for certain repairs has offered a rod repair service that sounds like a hard epoxy filler that gets cooked in place and polished so the rod is supposed to be smooth and round again.

    Hi Warren, we have done many JD Ag hyd. cylinders. We find that on some JD has used a lot of red loctite when putting the nut or bolt on the piston rod end.

    Big fan here, Warren, thanks for all you do. Any chance you’d let me know what Loctite anaerobic sealant you’d recommend for a Kubota lawn tractor gear and transmission case? Manual recommends RTV but I remember you saying you weren’t a fan..Thanks!

    hard part is getting them back together. my bobcat cylinders had teflon o'rings. soaked them in hot water installed them on the piston then used hose clamps to shrink them down so it all fit

      The teflon seals suck .

      Yes, Those are the Glass Filled Teflon Piston Seals and need to be warmed to stretch on.
      Soaking in Hot Water or Oil is best, although you can place them in the sun or on the Car / Truck dash, whatever you can do to warm them up. Once seal is on ,you should wrap with tape (Sticky side out) and then a Hose clamp and put in freezer so it will shrink back down and not Shear when going into the Cyl.
      The Brown Bronze Filled Teflon Piston Seals are the same way.
      Urethane Pistons will just Stretch on and do Not need to be warmed.

    i have a 310c. i didnt see you use a orange plastic filler ring to remove the piston W/ brake ring. can you explain the process? im actually building a crown cylinder for my 310c right now. used the orange plastic filler ring to make brake ring slide over snap ring groove. do i use it to rreinstall? seems like stuff would slip over tapered edge? also, why is the orange filler ring always found down in the gland when taking cylinder apart? if one doesnt have orange plastic filler ring...what does one do? i am using BULLDOG brand rebuild kit. it always leaves out the "buffer ring". my cylinder was leaking out the outer dust seal. but i see no internal seal damage. all looks good. except....the piston wear ring was totally missing! thanks

      Yeah no problem. I have spent over 50 grand between a service truck , a heater for the shop another car lift , not to mention the 1000 dollar a month shop rent , and the 300 dollar a month power bill . I'll go behind the shop and shake that money tree and see what happens.

    If you ever had a big Dent or a Big scratch in the shaft of the cylinder I've used a expensive two part epoxy not for sure the name of it but it still holds up and working real well If you're interested I could probly find out the name for you

    New Holland seals are way better, we use one 1700 hours every year. Our old one was on 11.000 hours and did never have a seal on the cylinders leaking, only seal leaking was from the transmission to the front axle.

    Its all precision machined. including the connection from ram to machine. if its damaged, it must be brought back to specs. period

      There is one there , the electric motor is burnt up in it and they want as much for the motor as I could buy another compressor for . I'm waiting for my money tree to grow so I can get another one.

    Here in The UK we tig weld deep scares in the hydraulic rams and clean it back and emery cloth it to a very fine finish.

    Whats you're opinion on a 555b backhoe I bought one for 1000 motors been rebuilt but they screwed the timing up on it I got tear it back apart. 3 cylinder diesel I figured 1000 I can't go too wrong. But what do you personally think.?

    I had a Case stabilizer one time the guy before me red loctited the whole threaded end on the cylinder gland end. I heated it with a torch and melted the nylon back up ring a bit, it acted like a nylock nut. Case just has the two little pin wrench holes too that was a long couple hours getting that cylinder apart! I like the Deere ones better. I don’t like deeres extendahoe cylinder seems light and the plumbing rubs bad

      Yes I cussed him, ended up having to keep the heat on it to keep the nylon ring soft as soon a I took the heat away it was like you welded it. It was crued Lol

    Do you have some insite on a 900 ford 172 motor. the motor is all new but i can't get the rear seal to set i have the seal in right and it just keeps leaking ???

      Check the crankshaft endplay. Also make sure there is nothing restricting the crankcase breather or the pressure will shove the seal out . Make sure that that the seal is supposed to be accompanied with a wear sleeve on the crank , so the seal id is to big .
