A lot of good advice here. I ride year round in Colorado, my 2c for anyone interested:
I prefer heated glove liners over heated grips- it's the back of your hands, not the grip-side, that get cold fastest, and heated grips just won't do enough (though still a lot better than nothing) sub 30F. Winter riding gloves + heated liners is a must, trust me, I've tried everything.
IMO there is no need to get a winter riding jacket. If you own a ski jacket/parka/whatever, just throw that on over your regular summer jacket. Yes, you won't get any reflective bits from your usual gear, but trust me, nothing comes close to being as comfortable.
And in case anyone else wears glasses, let me state the obvious just in case: a pinlock won't do a thing to help you, even if the visor doesn't fog your glasses will. The easiest trick is always to crack the visor open just the teeniest bit- the cold air blowing through will de-fog as fast as anything. Your face will get a little cold, but it shouldn't bother you much if you're warm everywhere else.

I’ve ridden my bike as low as 38 degrees w/o any heated gear. It’s doable but heated stuff definitely improves the ride!
rode to work in 28 (minus 2 celcius) like 3 weeks ago, only like 40km and had to stop half ways to heat my hand on my exhaust gases. so yeah heated gear is recommended. i aint giving up till its icey
I rode at -4 degree f° / -20C° to work, without any heated gear. Far away from comfortable but with some layers no poblem at all.
How to winterize your motorcycle
Revzila: full tank of gas to prevent rusting, plastic baggy over exsost pipe so rodents won't get in there, and get your bike of the ground so the tires won't get flat spots.
Spite: barck busters and maybe get a coat idk lmao

better than heated grips: heated gloves. The heated grips warms your hand palm but the heatter globes warms the outside part of your hand, which is the part that will be freezed in the wind

I commute every winter here in the netherlands and tried a lot of stuff. heated grips sound nice but have disadvantages like it only warms your palms so your fingers are still freezing. Also had em on a sportbike with clip ons and that didnt work well because the cables got in the way and started to damage the fairings. so I would recommend good heated gloves they work very well and heat your hole hand. Also if you have multiple bikes you can just wear them so you just spend your money ones. best wind stopper for me are the rain pants i just wear them over my kevlar jeans and even on freezing temperatures I stay warm.

Ask a Canadian what you need that is not on your list: Heated vest. No one I know who rides in the colder times has heated socks but all have heated vests. Keep your core warm and blood still goes to the extremities. I have mine with me always.
My most important piece of winter riding gear is my damn truck with a heated seats.
Same here in Phoenix we went from 90s to high 40s in the span of 2 days. We're back into the 90s right now and next week will be cold again. Gonna get some 7v lipo heated gloves for goon shit.
Just have a look at the Aerostich catalogue. Bar-Pockies/Mitts. Wear wool. A heated jacket. An older BMW RT. Keep your core warm and you’ll probably be fine - worry when you stop shivering.
You Texans got it easy.I live in PA and I do ride all year...except when roads are actually snow covered.Your greatest fear should be other drivers that can't drive in winter.

North West of Ireland is the worst for weather we get between 0-15 degrees for the whole year and it rains 90% of the time but south or the east it’s not that bad
Northern Irishman who rode all year round, but now living in the Philippines where it never gets below about 20°C. I had to ride all year round, snow and rain be damned, cos that was my only form of transport, but now I've got 2 bikes and 2 cars to fuck around with. Life is decent!

The motorcycle Mitts for the handlebars are called "Pogies" in the cycling world! Awesome addition to any Fatbike for winter riding. When I worked at my local bike shop for a few years in WY (Cold Winters) I had a few moto riders come in and really enjoy them!
Riding in Wisconsin a few days ago ice was forming in my water bottle. I like that visor, gonna get one. Something I use are these strap on shin/knee covers. Makes a big difference and easy to take on and off. Leather look vinyl on the outside and kinda furry on the inside.
I live around the mountains in Colorado...6 minutes away. I ride 365 unless the streets are; flooded, iced, or snow-covered. The counties are very good at clearing the roads so I don't miss many days. I appreciate the vid and the comments. My ride has heated grips, heated seats, and an adjustable windshield so I have a nice head start. I'll definitely add the heated socks and glove liners this year. If the glove liners aren't enough I'll go super nerd, plus there won't be any bikers out there to give me a hard time about them!
Ride all year, every day for bout 4 years now. 40 miles each way commute. Temps down to 13 degrees F. I can say heated grips don't do jack lol. You'll be stopping constantly to save your hands, professional heated gloves that hardwire in and can be plugged and unplugged to your bike battery are an absolute necessity. Hotwired makes the best and they will last for many many years. Can even get fully wet and function. I made the mistake of trying everything else including grips and all sorts if other gloves my first 2 years in full winter and in the end wasted more money then if I would have did it right from the start. They take a few minutes to get to temp but are beyond warm and a game changer above everything else.
I ride all year round, here in Lyon, France. Thermal underwear is the key!! Torso, legs, socks and a ski balaclava and you're toasty all day. I switch my Summer windscreen for a Givi Winter model and use heated gloves. Cheaper and more effective than grips. I don't know about you but it's the outside surface of my hands that hit the wind, not the inside! Winter jacket, boots and trousers essential. Only if there's snow and ice do I switch to the car.
i actually started riding in november in switzerland. its not as bad as you might think, as long as you dont behave stupid.
Its actually been surprisingly warm this winter here in Ontario, I think the lowest we've gotten is -25. And thats with the wind chill but most days have been -10, now that we are in Feburary its more like -5 to -8. I got to ride from the start of summer well into the winter months, I actually rode the first week of December! I got heated grips from oxford for my striple 765 r but once it gets to 0*c or lower its just far too cold. Plus once you get snow or slush on the ground its game over, no way I'm risking my bike just to freeze my ass off for a short ride. A neck gaiter is essential, and I actually found wearing snow pants over your riding pants works perfectly and will keep you warm. I also wear a armoured sweater with like shoulder, back and forearm padding below a snow mobile jacket. Still though once you hit below 0 no thanks.

Canada here, been there done most of that even in the summer. This is why I like the Tiger with standard heated grips and seat.
I duck taped paper plates to my clutch and brake lever for the 30 degree morning ride to work. Pulled them off when I got there and had a nice 75 degree ride home.
I ride year round in Vancouver Canada. Heated gloves warm the whole hand are cheaper than grips and stay with you so you dont lose your invest. I use a heated vest plugged into the pigtail which is standard on most bikes. I also have a pair of oversized jeans to wear over top of my regular pants. Great vid though and thanks Yammie

I never got that luckily. I rode a bike to work all weather for 2 years even in snow. On a duelsport with 50/50 tyres. Kept to main roads I never had a car till 1999.

I ride all year when it's freezing. A bigger size down parka over a hoodie or whatever jacket, snowboarding gloves with a hand warmer in them, work boots (not steel toe), full face helmet with the face sheild wiped with defogger, sometimes a scarf, and cargo pants. Those keep me warm except for my knees sometimes.
The Pinlock is such a massive necessity in colder weather. Love it on my Ruroc, also #1 really should have been heated gloves, like my torso, legs, and feet never get cold it's just always my hands.

While my pinlock works amazing! Because I wear glasses they still fog in my helmet, something to note.
I clean my glasses with washing up liquid. Helps reduce the fogging a little.
Minus 40c a regular winter temperature here and roads black ice, I will stick to a heated seat and heated steering wheel with a block heater for the truck.
If you have an inner liner, flip it backwards so the opening is at your back. In a pinch, it makes a big difference

Electric vest is better than all of those suggestions especially if you ride a sport bike. It keeps your torso warm replacing loss heat. Way less intrusive than the other electrics and combined with heated grips (get generic ones for snow mobiles)makes a great combination
Watching this as its 94 degrees in my garage here in Vegas.... I hate the heat especially this late into the year.
Just move to north dakota and still riding even when it hit 17 degrees. I go with heated gloves vs grips due to heated grips only warm your palms where heated gloves warms the parts of your hands that the wind hits.
So in exchange for number 4, a snowmobile jacket. I snowmobiled before I rode and I go grab that jacket any time it's 45 or colder, and a good klim or fly jacket also has the padding with the flash of a Ducati jacket.

You can also use ski gloves on a 40 degree morning... I did and it worked just fine at 80 mph.
If you don’t have anything to support your handlebar muffs like Barkbusters, you’ll find out soon enough the wind will force the muffs into your clutch & brake levers. That’s a no-go.
Electric vest or bib. Warm torso/core helps keep the rest of your body warm.
I rode today in Minneapolis. I have the only BMW without heated grips. Barkbusters and snowboard gloves work fine in temps as low as 15F. Below that, don't ride. Too cold for even mud and snow rated tires. Can confirm Pinlock visor awesomeness!
Pinlock is life changing if you're riding in weather that gets a bad fog going. Cannot believe how much better it is, should have changed long ago.
Put Grip Puppies over the heated grips. They make the grips _last forever_ though you may need to use one setting higher on the controller.

Waterproof (like Gore-Tex) boots will definitely help keep your feet warmer, ditto for gloves.

Well I live in south central PA. I ride year round 2012 r1 6 foot 220. I see temperatures down to 20°. I work outside also year round. I work a ski resort in snow making. I can see 20° temperatures changes on my way in the morning.

Im from Chile and i enjoyed my first riding winter more than i did the summer, people from mediterrenean climates would agree with me, you can always put on more clothing but riding over 30c with my jacket is horrible, riding pants can't be used without melting my balls. Temperature is about -3 in the mornings in winter but by noon is about 10-15 so save for rain is far better, mid season is a mixed bag here, some days can be frosty in the mornings and over 25 in the afternoon, so very nice for a ride, just requires a few removable gear like the neck thing, and an extra hoodie like Spite.

Well for a person that rode 12 months in a climate similar to that of southern California (Perth Australia), A vented jacket for summer with zip in panels to stop the venting in Spring and Autumn. A high vis mine site wet weather jacket and wet weather pants. Enclosed leather boots. A windshield. Temps between 35 and 105 year round, riding nights mostly. The wet weather pants and jacket just stop the winter chill even if it is not raining during winter. My only change next year is to get a fully vented summer jacket with white anywhere I can and to replace my black helmet with a white one. I can ride to conditions in the wet and the cold with what I have but that sun hitting my black riding gear on a day that is 105? You are drinking a litre of water after a 1/2 hour ride. Stay safe.

I live in california. We get summer and slightly cooler summer. Still watched the video though, after yesterday it looks like hell is freezing over.
I can't recommend the handlebar sleeves enough. I had two layers of insulation under my winter riding gloves and, when I got home, I was barely able to get my helmet off; had to thaw out my hands in luke warm water. But with the sleeves, I can ride all day in regular gloves no problem (30/40s where I'm at). Other riders make fun of me, but I just ask 'em where their bike is at and remind 'em it's still in the garage.

Only reason I haven't installed heated grips yet is I've heard they can be terrible in the rain.
(Gore-Tex allows water/vapor to flow from hot to cold, presuming your hands are warmer than the rain. If your grips are warmer than your hands, this property can soak your gloves in the rain.)
Silk long underwear (top and bottom) and balaclava. Very thin, very warm, very comfortable. Wintersilks is a good company. Also silk gloves will fit right inside your winter gloves. Real silk, not synthetic. Also, at 40 degrees and 60mph, the real temperature your hands are in is 40 degrees. Wind just cools your hands to 40 degrees faster.

I have a question on the baggy leather jacket, does this jacket need to be a motorcycle jacket with pads? I have a thick leather jacket I can use but doesn't have CE protection for the elbows, shoulders, or back.

Why heated grips and barkbusters? Just get rechargable heated gloves. I heard they last for hours and you don’t need to connect it to your bike.
If you really wanna be warm, get a heated hoodie like I did. They keep you toasty. Milwaukee makes good, but expensive ones.
My dad rides a Harley. I ride a 650 Versys (which makes more HP, but who's counting?). It is an endless stream of "when are you gonna get a REAL BIKE??"
When the weather started cooling off and he quit riding, I reminded him that a REAL BIKE is the one you ride all year. So I want to add to Spite's suggestions.
(I live in West Virginia where cold CAN come in October and stick around until April. Come ride the mountains!)
Your cold weather setup starts with a good synthetic base layer. Head to toe. This layer keeps the sweat off you and keeps the wind from rapid cooling your body as it evaporates.
Layer in this pattern: Base, insulation, compression, wind break. If you need two layers of insulation, go nuts. The importance of your wind break being high quality cannot be understated, though.
You are fighting two things when riding in cold - keeping as much heat IN as you are keeping the cold OUT. The wind will suck the heat out of your core, and if you can't slow it down significantly your rides will be short and unpleasant. You have to make sure the loss of heat is offset by something, and your wind break layer is the first line of defense. Adding heat back in is also critical - ultimately you're fighting entropy with some exaggerated variables. It is easy to get in front of. Heated gloves and grips are good, as are the heated socks (use that base layer though!). I added a heated vest to my setup this year. I also keep a supply of the big Hothands Super Warmers, as well as some of the toe warmers in my kit. They work well right above the base layer if you're losing enough heat that it is uncomfortable.
I would also argue that the inner liner for your jacket isn't worthless, but it also isn't enough.
The point about the gaiter should be underlined three times, though. This is an absolute must have item for winter riding. If you want to go full nine, get a full-face balaclava, though be warned it will cause fogging issues. Worth it when it is really cold 100%.
If you like to ride long distances like I do, be sure you are drinking enough water. It is easy to forget when it is cold, but you're still working, sweating, and breathing. Getting dehydrated is super easy when you're not in miserable Texas heat.
And, oh. Don't forget some Chap Stick somewhere in your kit. Happy trails this winter!
What they don’t tell you about heated grips is how much larger they make your grips. They are worth it though I live in Oregon and ride everyday luckily I avoid frost bite cause my drive to work is less than 30 mins

Pro tip (if your pants allow it) is to wear sweatpants underneath your bike pants. Great insulation provided your bike pants are somewhat windproof. Keeps the chills off of your legs
Heated gloves don't require bark busters . (Start bike turn gloves on , move when gloves start feeling warm ) . I did the hoodie under jacket once , too many air passages .
