For me personally, an addiction. I am 62 and after extensive research on my own, started Keto 11 months ago. Eating a low carb diet has thought me more about my body's response to food than everything I learned in my previous 61 years. My tolerance for carbs is very low. If I eat more than 15 grams of carbs in any meal, I can count on intense cravings for chocolate or rich sweets about 15 minutes later. This happens when I make the choice to have an extra half of tomato or a second helping of cauliflower mash. Before Keto, the cravings were getting worse with every year. It was to the point were it took 3 or more cupcakes before the sugar craving would stop. This was literally killing me. Keto was the only way for me to eat without triggering the cravings. I lost 48 lbs., bloodpressure meds are history and A1C in normal range again. Life is good again and for me, low carb is a necessity.

Yes carbs are addictive. I am healthy and slim, I do not need to lose any more fat. I can say that after a year of eating a very low carb ketovore diet, I have no sugar cravings at all any more and my hunger is so under control that I usually eat only OMAD. BUT, I ate a curry with rice and a beer for the first time last week and when I got home I was so desperate for more carbs that I found the only carbs I had in the house, some frozen bread at the bottom of the freezer and I made toast. I haven't eaten, or wanted to eat, bread for a year. I was so like an addict searching for a fix that I frightened myself. I am an abstainer from carbs, I cannot moderate their intake.

Interesting. I agree that if something is inherently addictive, then even if you just have it occasionally you're just gonna have to deal with some cravings afterwards. Same with smoking. I gave up for months and then one night had a few cigarettes. Many who do this ended up breaking and go back to smoking full time again. However I was able to put it into perspective and tell myself I've not smoked for months, I'm not fully addicted as I was before and it was just a one off and doesn't mean I have to go back to it full time.
I was able to abstain, but like you with the bread in the freezer, as I was walking home after my night out (someone gave me the smokes, I didn't have my own) I passed a shop and stopped outside as I decided whether to buy myself a pack or not. I decided not to, though there was a slight craving. The thing is you're not fully addicted at first if you're not used to the substance, but an addictive substance inherently wants you to become addicted to it and that will kick in immediately. I think that's what these scientist's talking here are maybe starting to find out.
Basically what I'm saying is if you're able to then you can partake in something that is potentially addictive for a short time if you're able to be clear in your mind that it's just a one off and that you're not going to let yourself slide into a full on addiction. You're able to almost laugh off any little urges for more. Of course for some they just can't handle any level of craving whatsoever and will just give in to it, so they're best not to touch the substance ever again.

It’s an addiction. To me it explains why people getting the shakes then eating a candy bar and shakes go away. It wasn’t because that made you full it’s because you satisfied your craving/addiction. I say it’s a minor bout with DT’s. Some people mistake the shakes for low blood sugar, bull crap. Hershey’s Kisses are for the tweakers. I’ve been keto for over two years and haven’t felt those “shakes” since 2 weeks into it. Thanks Doc!

      @anthonymarconi761 3 ปีที่แล้ว

indeed, most of the things people call addictive are really a mix of fat and carbs. So while I do not dispute the effects of carbs in certain areas of the brain, I believe that the hyperpalatability of certain food activates many zones and that indeed fats play their part too! Aside from pasta (my Italian side I guess!), I can't really think of something on the spot that has a reputation of being addictive and that doesn't contain carbs and respectable amounts of fats as well...and even with pasta, I mean, who binges on them just with tomato sauce?

I’m not overweight but suffered varying moods and was invariably comatose most afternoons. Too many breakfast cereals, biscuits, cookies, bread, ice cream etc, but never touched any sodas. Now eating bacon eggs salmon, and if I stick to the protein, I don’t get cravings for carbs. The minute I give in to 1 carb as a treat, my god the pleasure cravings won’t leave me alone. None of them satisfy of course, it’s all in the anticipation. Carbs are nasty things, and I’m pretty sure all the pharma and food companies know exactly what they are pushing.

I lost over 100 pounds and normalized my blood sugars with a low carb diet less than 50 grams per day. However, I was addicted to carbs like sugar and especially wheat, which gave me withdrawal symptoms for a couple of weeks. I didn't know I was addicted to wheat until I stopped it and the cravings were incredibly substantial. It wasn't just that I wanted the bread; I needed it and that's when I realized I was addicted and began to research the addictive properties of modern wheat. Personally I think this is tied in with hyperinsulinemia somehow.

I've been watching a lot of videos about this on TH-cam and it looks like when you become insulin-resistant from too many carbs your body tries to block the sugar from entering your cells... and your cells do need the sugar to operate so they feel like they are starving for sugar and carbohydrate even though they are surrounded by it constantly. The result is your cells crying out for carbohydrate making you yearn for more even though you have too much already

Greens are healthier and have less sugar. Again less sugar, less tasty.
But do not forget.. sugar destroys dna. Thus ages you quicker and hits you with heavy fines of ilnesses.
So consider sugar intake, which luckily is very associated with weight, so you can pretty much have accountability.

Excellent content. I think she's dithering at the end because there are political consequences in admitting that carbs are addictive, especially when you tie in all the detrimental health effects of high carb intake. She's gotta be careful not to loose her funding, such is the world we live in. Caffeine is acknowledged as addictive, but then the negative (although I would argue this) effects aren't as substantial as carbs.
It's like with the tobacco investigations years ago. A huge part of that was whether nicotine was addictive or not. The tobacco companies thought very hard to prove that nicotine wasn't addictive. The reason was because if it wasn't addictive then basically it was people's free choice to participate in it or not, and that influences policy more than most people know, hence the reluctance of these scientist's do admit that carbs are addictive.
When nicotine/smoking was socially acknowledged to be addictive then a lot more people gave it up. There was a shift in consciousness from "well I just do it because I want to" to "It'd be really hard not to do this because I'm addicted".
Many people smoked and it was so normal and so ubiquitous that barely anyone had stopped long enough to realise they were addicted. I see the exact same pattern in this carb laden world.
Well the good news is you don't have to wait around for the mainstream to figure out how to move forward. I'm sure there were some people back in the day who figured out for themselves that cigarettes were addictive, and then asked themselves do they really want to participate in something that has a hold of them, that they may not actually want to do but the addiction has convinced and created the illusion for them that they actually want to do do this thing when in reality they really don't. It's exactly the same with carbs. The science is interesting but science moves almost as slow as politics because they're intrinsically linked. Don't wait for them to guide you. Ultimately you know that carbs are addictive. So you wanna be an addict or not, that's the choice.

the best science restricts the exercise and documents the exact calories and types of calories in a controlled environment for at least 30 days, if not 3 months, but maybe
half of 1% of food science is done this way, until that changes, the science is unreliable,

My theory: When food was not abundant, we evolved to love carbs because it was a great source of energy. I just finished a 48 hour fast and my first meal was tofu (with nice condiments) and butternut soup. I quantity of the tofu (protein) and the soup (lots of carbs) were almost the same. Because I was very hungry, I thought I was going to enjoy the tofu as much as the soup. HOWEVER, it was the soup that made me close my eyes and taste every spoon. My brain was loving the carbs. I love tofu (being Japanese) but the tofu was just tofu even after the fast.

I am following a medium ketogenic diet, 19 to 20hrs intermittent fasting (1.5 meals) ,cycling almost daily and weight is below 55kg. For me these food are the most difficult to stop/crave : Ice creams, chocolate cake, potato chips and cookies. Even as a keto dieter, I try my best not to buy and eat them , I finished whole packet of them before, that scary. The very helpful Dr Berg once said in video that taking enough potassium daily (3700mg, 7-10 cups of salad greens) will help maintaining the blood sugar and stop carbs/sugar cravings. Personally, I feel like adding good fats like cream cheese, nuts, seeds and coconut milk will help me stop craving for carbs/sugar.
