When washing the prints, I just put mine in a water proof box for food stuffs along with the alcohol and shake with moderate vigour for 10 seconds. I use three of these boxes, so the first one dissolves the majority of the resin, and the other two needs to clean progressively less. I'v had my Mars 4 Max for just over a year now. Worth every penny. I'v just printed a 2000pt Aeldari army for £60 including the few files i bought. The army would have been £500 from GW.
Thanks for the video. Regarding the time cost vs. money cost argument: if you're going to trade money for time, you need to be honest to yourself if it's worth spending the extra time (making money) selling your labor instead of using your labor time yourself. It might not be so simple, you might need to find a second job, spend more time commuting, more time away from home. Personally I'd rather cook my own meals, clean my own house, walk my own dog, and make my own toys in the comfort of my own home, at my own schedule, instead of paying for all those services and trying to figure out how to pay for them.
The way I look at it is it's hobby time regardless and if I was going to be using plastic I would be spending the same amount of time if not more on clean up etc
@@battlebrothersamits completely fine if you want to get into 3d printing as a hobby too but it's good to be realistic that the cheap resin printers require a lot of time and the "apple" type 3d printers aren't cheap yet. As some one who's been a freelancing professional for a couple decades and who also does regular 3d print commissions, the mention of time is money hits home more than you know! That's a big factor when I quote a commission -- how much time and effort it takes to hunt down proper files and then usually to support them well instead of trusting the shoddy supports they often come with.
Exactly this. I have to explain to people who aren't getting the friend hook up price why it's not just $5 for a handful of minis when that's all the resin costs are. People seem to forget about the hour or more I might potentially spend doing post print processing so they only have to glue stuff together
The time cost is interesting since it varies from person to person. One thing to consider is that it does take time to put GW kits together too. If you get zero enjoyment from getting a model ready then I don't think the two are that far apart time wise (if you dont count print time since thats idle) Personally I find putting plastic kits together fun at least most the time. With 3d prints looking for files takes time but is also a really fun process, and the actual printing and cleaning is...ok. Probably the most annoying thing time wise with 3d prints is if you get failures and have to debug I'd say.
For those of us who can’t go the resin route for various reasons, here’s my FDM printer hack. I have a Bambu lab a1 mini and an a1. This might work with other printers, don’t know. Get a .2 nozzle. Get a resin slicer and prepare the stl file as you would for a resin printer. Supports and all. Save that file and upload it to your fdm slicer. Prepare. Print. Too easy. The supports are way easier to break off than fdm supports and while it’s not as detailed as resin, it’s still really good. Printed a bunch of tyranids and all the details were there. And some krieg. Also, individual content creators on MMF also have sales, and often offer substantial discounts on models in their back catalog, for subscribers, if they go the way of Patreon (and many do). Thank you for this video. It showed to me the points i already knew and many new ones to NOT start 3d printing. I am already happy to have time to paint my minis so investing that much money and time just to print minis is a no go... yeah its maybe better in the long run or if you want to do 3d printing as another hobby but if you just want to paint and play minis , this is a huge money and time invest... also gw doesnt allow 3d printed minis , so you cant play on official tournaments or if they find out you probably get banned from other tournaments
Great vid bro. The tea strainer is an excellent, i always lose heads. How long do you typically cure minis for? I seem to have issues with under and over on the elegoo station
Thanks brother! Yeah it was a game changer for me when I found them, no more dipping my gloves hand into a bucket of resin spirits trying to find the smallest piece lol I cure small infantry for 5 mins and bigger models for 10 mins usually
I'm using an ultrasonic nail cleaner for anything 32-75mm and a container of warm water for everything bigger, sunlight curing, no issues with Sunlu ABS WW. Costs are negligable
I think no one really mentions that you can print so much more with your 3d printer. I’ve printed all the Christmas presents and people enjoy them much more than any other gifts
I've been 3d printing pretty much exclusively 40k and I run anycubic abs-like pro 2 which funny enough I get cheaper than I can get sunlu/jayo abs-like . I've printed my entire imperial knights army (around 6k inntotal) and printed a warlord titan as well. I printed a Porphyrion which is interesting because, it cost me $30 to print, $5 for the files, $160 for wash and cure , $620 for s4u printer (Australia) ....the prophyrion from GW is $950aud....so it's cheaper to buy an entire 3d printing setup for less than 1 model....
Really great information and it’s so helpful to think about ALL the costs that go into a hobby. That being said, good lord y’all’s electricity prices are insane! I’m ticked off that ours is 14 cents per kwh now (used to be around 10 in Texas) and yours is the equivalent of 36 cents. God Bless…
14 cents!?!?!! Christ on a bike that's cheap! I'd be running all my printers at once with those prices 😂😂😂😂😂😂 What happened to everything's bigger in texas? Is that everything but the bills! Lol
Topic of fumes. I've run testing on waterwashable resin, pretty low VOC's off of it, I've actually seen readings in the print room go UP when I've aired it out for several hours after printing. That said, ventilation, ventilation, ventilation and wear a good quality filter. Also consider FDM if you don't have a good space for resin printing. Yes it's slower, and the quality is lower buuuuuuut, it's not bad if you use a 0.2 nozzle. Perfectly workable if you're more into the gaming side and less into the painting side
Dude this was a great video, im looking to buy my first 3D printer and will be buying off your affiliate links. Checked out the week prior vid on printers you recommend too. Great stuff. Gotta get mine before freedom land gets hit with freedom tarrif markups.
@battlebrothersam yeah I didn't either until a friend mentioned it. I was gonna put it off until next year. I watched your video. As I mentioned on your recommended 3D printers. It's still a lot to consider. I live in the PNW of the US where we don't get much snow but it is cold in the winter and I plan on having my setup in the garage. For an absolute noob price not being an issue would you personally say with my info listed above I should get that GKTwo model or something else? Only asking cause same friend listed above said I should start small and work my way up. I understand what he's saying but I've always been of the opinion to buy the right tool for the job.
hobby time is time off not working and doing stuff you like if you hate printing you cold consider time cost if you don't minde printing its like spending time playing games or sports you like to do also change your filters on your mask to organic vapor cartridges . the ones on your mask are for wood dust and other dust particles not for toxic fumes
5:20 it is a lot more reasonable to just slice empty print bed with lowest layer height and zero exposure power+time and running it for a while than messing with spatula, tableflip foundry explains how to do it pretty excessively
I've looked into that before but I use the spatula to stir the resin while checking if there is anything stuck to the fep film so it kills 2 birds with 1 stone.
@@battlebrothersam well, I’m using S4U and it’s residue detection is working(I’m pretty sure that it’s a thing for any printer of this year and further), so I don’t bother to check if I didn’t have failed print
rather than silicone mats i prefer the cheapest metal baking trays i can find. the rigidity allow me to carry them around and u can get them for a few £ from discount shops
Have electric running to the shed which I paid a spark to do and the printers running keep it warm but I use the small fan heater in this video to heat it if I have nothing running
2:36 paper towels are crap, even two layer toilet paper light years ahead by resin cleaning capabilities, while nonwoven cotton towel are the best at this purpose - single piece can replace huge amount of paper towels and actually leaves clean surface without any glossy residue
My uncounted cost is that I keep buying Kickstarter armies because they are cheaper that way. I am up to four, I think, plus a fortress Kickstarter. But I am super busy in real life so I have yet to print out one army. LOL Damn you DakaDaka!!
I printed a 3000pt chaos dwarf army on my mars 3 in 4 days, but then I found better minis so I printed a whole new 3000pt Chaos Dwarf army lol in all I used 3 litres of resin at $50 AUD a bottle. I would say $150 for 6000pts is pretty good value. Especially when it cost that much for 5 plastic chaos knights. If we are going to talk about the time argument, we are going to have to talk about the 6 months of working that were required to pay for a Warhammer army because that's how a job works, you sacrifice portions of your life for money. There is really only one legit downside to resin printing and that's that the process sucks, even when it works its messy and annoying.
I still don't understand why they don't cover the baskets on the machines in a wire mesh to stop the heads and tiny bits falling down. I bought a fine stainless steel mesh and did it myself with stainless steel thread and it worked pretty good. You will accidentally stab yourself with them though while installing. It's annoying but worth it for less messing about.
@@battlebrothersam Probably right, they could add ones with larger holes though. They don't have to be tiny holes, just enough to hold smaller parts. If you are receiving stuff from the from free maybe it's a good idea to email them that design idea. Even an insert for the cage would be an improvement. They are more likely to listen to you than any of us.
just finished collecting my first army. that's about it for me buying gw stuff. I'd like to collect more minis through 3D rather than buying more minis from gw.
I printed for around a year did a good few armies but after the odd resin spill and the mess and hassle printing can be and also I don’t really like most stl compared to gw stuff and I feel like printing copy’s of gw is just abit of a like I don’t wanna cross I’ve gone back to buying gw stuff and just printing stuff for my gw models and terrain
@ yeah I think price of 3d printing is a no brainer it’s a million times cheaper than gw prices and is a good way to get into the hobby played against a cool printed guard army other day just the mess and clean up for me was the main thing and how much room it takes up with printer wash and cure and then extra ipa keeping resin bottles so u don’t run out gloves and other things that make it easier and then when u have a failed print needing to clean the vat and if u pierce the vat when cleaning have to then put a new fep on this happened a couple times and was just a deal breaker for the amount of effort involved think some people don’t get this and think it’s all just easy but it’s abit of a hobby in it’s self
still cheaper than GW. the trick is putting a limit on yourself. Buy a midrange $300 printer - $200 worth of resin - the supplies you need - and stop it at that. print one or two armies. I still ended up spending 2 grand + on 3d printing - i just got 5 armies out of it, instead if 1 from gw
The time you spend building isn't part of the cost in my opinion. It's all part of The Hobby. The Hobby is so huge lore, painting, the games which there are so many now, building the minis and so on. Take what you want from it and enjoy. Costs an afterthought really at some point.
you are forgetting a very important money pit. cool STL files, even those unsupported. spend ALOT of money on those. looking at the black friday sale on myminifactory and my rent money is screaming to not get spend.
@@battlebrothersam personally i have a full death guard army and i considering getting Mezgikes Dredge guard range to oppose it. 2 identical armies, the best balancing.

I'm going to try this out after seeing some videos on fdm minis but I'm honestly going in biased because there's no way fdm is going to match resin for speed and quality for a unit of minis
LoL! man, I have never seen such a wasteful workflow and expensive tool selection in my printing years. Even so, printing minies cost pennies or cents compared to the stupid prices of most brands. God me and you had completely different experiences! I do have a bottle of ww so I guess I'll have to try it out again
@@battlebrothersam It's much easier if you get them into the booth still wet, have some paper towel or something behind the mini to catch spray. If you still see shine/wet resin after, repeat. I've been using the elegoo brand ww resin. Also sorry for the dickish tone lmao, just reread my comment XD
Yeah it was a game changer for me when I found them, no more dipping my gloves hand into a bucket of resin spirits trying to find the smallest piece lol I cure small infantry for 5 mins and bigger models for 10 mins usually
thanks this as a great video. very open and honest. thanks for the great tips and real world view.
Thanks brother
I'm using an ultrasonic nail cleaner for anything 32-75mm and a container of warm water for everything bigger, sunlight curing, no issues with Sunlu ABS WW. Costs are negligable
Does it clean it completely? I suppose an ultrasonic cleaner would really help with the cleaning
@@battlebrothersam Yup, does a great job! Keep the good work going Brother, love the video's!
I think no one really mentions that you can print so much more with your 3d printer. I’ve printed all the Christmas presents and people enjoy them much more than any other gifts
That's very true! I have a lot of things printed for my little one that I print in between projects
Instead of a pre-dip container, I like to use a spray bottle with alcohol and a salad spinner, helps save a lot of alcohol usage. :)
Ah that's a smart idea! Do you wear a mask?
@@battlebrothersam Always do, Im the type of person who feels ill from the fumes so its just habit now.
I have 15 printers currently. The expense of them is far less then I had previously spent for several armies I own.
Thanks brother! Oh I never even thought of that for you guys! Sure black Friday sales are on at the moment/more coming so it's a good time to buy
A tea strainer is such a great idea for small parts.
Absolute game changer
Instead of the tea strainer, I found organza draw string gift bags. About $5 for 50.
That's a good idea!
hobby time is time off not working and doing stuff you like if you hate printing you cold consider time cost if you don't minde printing its like spending time playing games or sports you like to do also change your filters on your mask to organic vapor cartridges . the ones on your mask are for wood dust and other dust particles not for toxic fumes
I agree with you there, oh really? I need to look into this ASAP
I love the use of freedom units.
rather than silicone mats i prefer the cheapest metal baking trays i can find. the rigidity allow me to carry them around and u can get them for a few £ from discount shops
how do you power in the shed and keep it warm?
Have electric running to the shed which I paid a spark to do and the printers running keep it warm but I use the small fan heater in this video to heat it if I have nothing running
I have a well ventilated garage with a fan directly blowing out a vent next to the printer, is a mask really that important
I mean it sounds better than what I had been using for over 2 years! Lol
I mean for $30 better safe than sorry. It's your lungs though not mine.
2:36 paper towels are crap, even two layer toilet paper light years ahead by resin cleaning capabilities, while nonwoven cotton towel are the best at this purpose - single piece can replace huge amount of paper towels and actually leaves clean surface without any glossy residue
I've never thought about toilet roll lol, how do you wash the towel though?
@@battlebrothersam they are disposable and pretty cheap, so there’s no reason to :)
My uncounted cost is that I keep buying Kickstarter armies because they are cheaper that way. I am up to four, I think, plus a fortress Kickstarter. But I am super busy in real life so I have yet to print out one army. LOL Damn you DakaDaka!!
Hahaha I can relate to this
Buying the models from someone else who prints them for you is waaaaaaay cheaper unless you’re literally buying hundreds of them
That's actually very true! There are a ton of great etsy stores out there selling good proxies
I'm site they have a reason to do with flow but I think the same as you! It would be so much easier if they just installed it for us!
Sunlu ABS like resin....get it when you can, thing is like gold dust atm!
just finished collecting my first army. that's about it for me buying gw stuff. I'd like to collect more minis through 3D rather than buying more minis from gw.
Great time to get into 3d printing brother 😁
Stopped buying warhammer when 10 Empire Greatswords cost £30.
Addicted to printing, GW will never see my money again.
Excellent brother 😁
I printed for around a year did a good few armies but after the odd resin spill and the mess and hassle printing can be and also I don’t really like most stl compared to gw stuff and I feel like printing copy’s of gw is just abit of a like I don’t wanna cross I’ve gone back to buying gw stuff and just printing stuff for my gw models and terrain
That's fair enough lad, you gave it a try and if it doesnt suit then it doesn't suit! Also love the name 🔥
Putting a limit on yourself is probably the hardest part!
The time you spend building isn't part of the cost in my opinion. It's all part of The Hobby. The Hobby is so huge lore, painting, the games which there are so many now, building the minis and so on. Take what you want from it and enjoy. Costs an afterthought really at some point.
Modern printers come with levelling, heater and filters
you are forgetting a very important money pit.
cool STL files, even those unsupported.
spend ALOT of money on those. looking at the black friday sale on myminifactory and my rent money is screaming to not get spend.
I think I say about this towards the end 😁
Although I did forget about black Friday sales for stls lol so now I'm going down a rabbit hole
@@battlebrothersam personally i have a full death guard army and i considering getting Mezgikes Dredge guard range to oppose it.
2 identical armies, the best balancing.
Sunlu ABS Like has been mentioned
Time, it costs time to learn
I Just printed 1450 points of Tsons for $80 in resin and probably $20 in misc (gloves, iso alcohol etc) power, Time means nothing if Im not selling that time for money anyway
Gw will never see another $ from me . they are always over priced and out of stock
Sounds like you made the right choice 😎
Don't forget to change your mask filters every 6 months.
Top tip right here! I forgot to include it in
fdm is the "cheapest" option
Buying unpainted models is more expensive than you think.
Resin or plastic?
@@battlebrothersam Warhammer comes in both right?
🤣 At 120$ plus for a single Primarch model that I can print for less than a few pennies I think I'll take 3D printing thanks
If you want to enjoy this hobby then don't bother starting it without an automated Wash Station... Anything else will just drive you up the wall.
I mean I did alright for the first year or so but it would be very.. Very... Hard to go back after using a wash station
Screw resin and GW prices
Consumable 💀💀💀
😅Maybe wrong choice of words
@ just jokes man I get it
Freedom units hahahah
'Murica 😎
or just do fdm
I'm going to try this out after seeing some videos on fdm minis but I'm honestly going in biased because there's no way fdm is going to match resin for speed and quality for a unit of minis
@@battlebrothersam its a trade off like everything in life.
LoL! man, I have never seen such a wasteful workflow and expensive tool selection in my printing years. Even so, printing minies cost pennies or cents compared to the stupid prices of most brands. I don't wargame, just some fun painting and TTRPG and most of my prints are airsoft related. I'm in my second printer and even being off most of the time, the bugger paid for itself in a couple of months, an avid painter/wargamer should get his money back in... two weeks, tops.
