How To SHARPEN Images In Photoshop - Sharpening FULLY EXPLAINED

When sharpening photos in Photoshop, it is important to understand that the sharpening adjustments that we apply do not add any new detail to the photo. In Photoshop, we can only create the illusion of sharpness by increasing the contrast of edge pixels. Making it seem as if there is more detail in the image.
If the sharpening is pushed too far, it can create edge halos or increase noise in the photo, so it is always a good idea to keep your adjustments as subtle as possible.
There are no rules or settings that you should always use. The amount of sharpening that looks good depends on the contrast of the texture of the image. The only thing that seems to hold true in most cases is that you should apply subtle adjustments.
When applying sharpness, always view the image at 100% so that you can see how the image is being affected, any other view will be inaccurate and misleading.
The tools that we will look at to sharpen images in Photoshop are the Smart Sharpen Filter, and the Camera RAW filter.
There are three types of sharpening that you can apply to a photo, Capture Sharpening, Creative Sharpening, and Output Sharpening. But in this video, we will mainly focus on capture sharpening.
Capture Sharpening
The sharpening that you apply to an image to bring back the sharpness lost through the process of capturing the image to a sensor and converting it to a digital format. The demosaicing process.
To offset this loss of detail, when you open a RAW file in CameraRAW or Lightroom you will see that the Sharpening “Amount” is set to 25 by default.
If you open a JPG, instead you will see that the Amount will be set to 0, because your camera or the device that created the image adds sharpening as the jpg is made.
Creative Sharpening
Applied selectively based on artistic intent. It is an effect that tends not to be realistic or subtle.
Output Sharpening
The last step before output. Done after you reduce the size of the image and before exporting it as a JPEG, or before printing the image. Both printing and downscaling an image may soften it, and it may require a bit of sharpening to bring back some detail.

Every time I watch one of your videos my work gets vastly better. For sharpening, I'd been using the calculations process, but that's much more complicated and time-consuming than what you show here, using the camera raw filter. I suspect the results would be similar, but camera raw is clearly easier to understand, and saves time. Thank you.

Very intelligent way sharpen is by Frequency separation. create frequency Separation is high and low frequency and delete the low frequency then applied high frequency for sharpening and it doesn't create any hallow and crunchy..

I've always used high pass, and this looks very interesting indeed, not sure you could use it on just small areas like eyes of an animal but for landscape this is very interesting...... Thanks for the video and looking forward to the next one!
Smart Filters have masks, so you could use the mask to apply targeted sharpening.

Thanks this is a great video. I hv always used smart sharpen with blend-if. My question is - if you already use the masking slider on ACR while applying sharpening.. Why does it create a full white mask for the smart object layer in PS?
The Mask in the Smart Object is separate. It's for all the effects you applied. So if you applied ACR sharpening, then a filter. The mask would control BOTH adjustments.

Thnx Jesús for the eye-opener for the "new" tools. I've used PS4 for a very, very long time and only recently changed to the CC versions of LR and PS. So far I've always used USM for sharpening (150, 1.0, 2) and local contrast (50, 10, 0) and/or the Photokit Sharpener plugin. I agree that Smart Objects is the way to go these days. Any chance of a tutorial on output sharpening where you have to consider DPI of the printer and viewing distance? I've blown up a 6MP image from my Nikon D1x to 2 x 2 meters and it looked really sharp when viewed from 10 meters or more, but the was basically trial and error. If you know "the science" behind it, please share. Thnx mate for all your good work !

Hi Jesùs, you are the BEST! Question - is ACR your preferred sharpening method for just the Capture Sharpening stage, or do you use it for all three stages: Capture, Creative, and Output?

This sharpening is available in Lightroom. Would you use it in Lightroom if you were starting there or because sharping usually occurs later in the retouching process do you prefer the Camera Raw Filter in Photoshop?
I would do it in Lr when possible (or Camera RAW). I try to work with the RAW file as much as possible. But of course, with a jpg or another compressed file, Photoshop and the Camera RAW filter is what I would use.

It works much better to do output sharpening first, but not too aggressively (leave just a little but it of room with in the image) and then accentuate certain areas with creative sharpening, lastly.

When you hold alt and click on "Sharpening>Masking Slider" It goes black and white to show what is being sharpened, is there a way to generate that thing as a mask in photoshop?

Great insights but I am confused, are you using sharpening in photoshop + camera raw or one OR the other?
I showed different techniques. And showed why I like camera raw sharpening.
Jesùs, why do you say that downsizing an image might reduce sharpness (1:58)? I thought that downsizing always increases the apparent sharpness of an image?
If you scale an image down, sometimes you may lose detail (depending on the original size, and how much you scaled it down) so you may need to sharpen it a bit.
HaHa I could have used this about 10 hrs ago but thats my problem I can try again today if time permits

At the end of work flow on the origonal image or at the end of work flow of the flattened copy of that image I.e. the tiff/jpeg we are sending to print. So this would be a duplicate of the origonal and after ICC profiles, print size, rendering intent, contrast and saturation adjustments and finally convert to profile. I know how to sharpen but its in when is the answer. Any advice most welcome as long as its constructive and not just conjecture. Photoshops like religion many opinions but not much truth in the gospel. Have a lovely day.

Why is the "Sharpen tool" (on the left) so much ignored. I mean...it is quite good for localized sharpening. Isn't it?
It's good when painting or doing other things. The problem with photographs is that you don't have much control as with these sharpening tools for an overall image.
So...what you are saying is that Lightroom is better than Photoshop at sharpening?
I'm saying that Photoshop's Camera Raw has powerful tools that are better than Unsharp Mask. And those sharpening tools are the same in Lightroom. Smart Sharpen is pretty good if you don't want to leave Ps.
I gather that this is not photoshop elements. So many of these settings and options may not be in elements.
