The guy on the left...the lights are on but no one's home.
It all goes over his head. But that's fair enough. It isn't even British humour, it was a new genre of humour that a lot of british don't even get
Be fair on Spencer - he is a good sport and British humour is just very different. There is a lot of American humour that I don't "get" even though us Brits are inundated with a lot more American shows than the Americans are with our shows.
I must say though that Daniel really just gets w lot of the humour and that is impressive as the UK office is very much born out of observation of British office life which I am sure is very different to American office life.
He gets nothing 😂
Every time he comments he’s way off! He just doesn’t get it. But it adds to it I suppose
@@brentmeistergeneral1054 I don't think he is a good sport, if you watch some of the intros of late, he seems decidedly sour when discussing negative reactions.
The Christmas specials are really essential to the story.. they're not just "extra episodes". They round out the show.. they finish it - finish the story. Thanks again, awesome reaction!
You guys thought you’d ‘got’ British humour - NOT A CLUE !!
The "Uh??" at 24:26 makes me belly laugh so hard every time. He's already spent a few minutes explaining the most banal and boring shit, the office is completely silent because they could not care less and he walks away selfishly thinking he can get a reaction. It's just perfect acting and comedy timing, a real masterpiece. There hasn't been anything like it before or since imo.
I cant help wondering if one of these chaps is getting the comedy aspect.
Josh and King Boomer seem to understand British comedy.
@@andywrong3247 Spencer watching monty python:
'the parrot does seem to be dead, so the pet shop owner is at fault here. Reminds me of when I had a job in retail.....'
@@andywrong3247 After Work Reactions
@@andywrong3247after work reactions I think?
@@andywrong3247 I believe they are referring to the "After Work Reactions" youtube channel. Another american reactor, definitely worth checking out if you haven't already!
Spencer, come on man this isn't real life its very loosely based on countless mundane jobs with some fantastic humour thrown in.chill Spence..
I sometimes think Spencer forgets he is watching a sitcom and thinks he is watching a Reality show. It was the same at times with I'm Alan Partridge.
Not a clue about the humour lol. It's endearing in a way, but you can tell he just sits there waiting for it to be over. Daniel gets so many more of the jokes.
Yeah, it's like Spencer is taking everything that happens in this comedy as real life. When he says things like "we don't do these kind of things in American offices", or lines such as "is this what you do in offices over there in the UK?", and others like "don't try this (when Tim kissed Gareth) in certain parts of the United States..." he really misses the mark. It really looks and sounds like he doesn't "get" this show at all. I'm sure he thinks he does, but what we're seeing would suggest otherwise.
Also, you don't have to cringe, you can laugh instead.
Tbh he has always been the weak link, I thought he'd get better over time but if anything he's worse recently
Harsh. The show is based on how things were and how people behaved, that's why It's cringe. Of course, times change, and that makes it seem even worse.
"Red Nose Day" started as a TV charity comedy marathon called "Comic Relief" in 1985, which changed name to "Red Nose Day" in 1988. It encourages the nation to raise money for charity, and in practice normally plays out exactly how it does in this episode.
... To add ,It's a BBC thing .
@@Silver3ides Although in recent years it has included a BBC presenters vs ITV presenters University challenge.
But why do we wear red noses? And does it still happen, I haven't seen anyone with a red nose in ages or them being sold but maybe I'm just old now as a late 20s man 😂
@@DisconnectedRoamer According to Wikipedia it's every March, but I've not noticed it for years. Certainly not seen a red nose anywhere for like 10 years.
I think the noses were only sold in Sainsbury's, they also recently changed them from a soft rubber like material to a harder more cardboard like thing, no where near as nice to wear.
Oh no! They didn't get Keith's "Not your minge" comment - possibly the highlight of this episode, among many.😆I thought they might know that word, and its inappropriate crudeness in this context - after reacting to so many UK things over the years
I was surprised at the lack of reaction to that too, I was expecting a shocked laugh!
Maybe we'll see a reaction when they watch the out takes. I seem to remember it took about twenty takes before they could do it with straight faces.
@@callumbruce4154 The comment made to the bossy pregnant lass in the special is even betterer though.
@@gracesprocket7340 I'm expecting that one to go over their heads too! I'll just have to wait and see ...
Why are you surprised? They don't get anything
The absurdity of David in that emu costume is top tier & didn’t get a laugh 😮
That dance put Ricky Gervais on the map 🤣🤣🤣
There was a time when Gervais was only known for doing this dance. People in public shouting at him,
“Do the dance, Brent!”
@@vanbalzup6481that's right! The media labelled him a "one trick pony" after the dance and said he could only play Brent ! 😂
It’s not the Brent checked out; he never did anything .. he never did any reports or run anything.. he just wondered around making himself feel good all day
BS. Slough branch was better performing than the Swindon lot (jealous slugs cos they were BETTER AT EVERYTHING). 5/7 of the board voted for David over Neil (a landslide). Brent was headhunted to give motivational talks (£300/hour - AND split £100 with Dawn). He also was a talented philosopher, jokester, musician AND dancer which kept up morale in the office. He was cruely stitched up by the BBC documentary crew who selectively edited the whole thing to make him look bad.
This is genuinely hilarious. I watched this in the UK over twenty years ago. Time flies!
David Brent is made redundant, because he's that type of middle manager that doesn't really manage or run anything. They do exist in real life :)
They make up way too much of the NHS.
My last manager was exactly like Brent; wandered around the office joking all day, delegating most of his work, moaning about upper management not understanding his "methods". He left to "pursue other ventures" which means he was probably invited to resign. From what I've heard, he has a long history of getting a managerial job somewhere on really good money, mucking around for 18 months, not doing much work and then leaving before he was fired.
I think the "problem" has been doing Partridge/Peep Show/The Office all in one hit. I kinda see a bit of those characters in Spencer and I'm not entirely sure he's the right guy to be pointing out the cringe in a way that kinda makes me cringe. I'd definitely welcome more Daniel in these reactions specifically.
We "get" the cultural differences, we're well schooled in US tv, work-"culture" and all that stuff, but...
Key moment for me was when Spencer had to mention the name of the U2 bassist - pedantry + U2 is a good mix? ...and I kinda feel there's a weird undercurrent of someone being a bit too self-aware they think the "dirty/inappropriate" stuff is actually funny and they'd have made the cringe joke themselves. I can see the immediate thought/holdback/process the "politically correct" reaction then engage mouth. Sorry.
David hadn't checked out at all, he wasn't in the mindset of wanting to not be there, he loves his job it's just his ego gets in the way because of the cameras. Redundancy is better than being fired because they give you a generous cheque for losing your job, unless you love your job like David does then it's sh!t
David and I have one thing in common, we are much better at doing things we want to do and our motivation plunges if we are told to do something.
Youre editing out the awkward pauses. It's not dead air, its peak British humour😅
At one time, David must have been at least decent at his job, otherwise the board wouldn’t have chosen him over Neil in season One (though I think Gervais has said that the incompetent manager who does t don’t much damage because the office basically runs itself is common in the UK. It was one of the things he thought might not translate to the US, because people there would t put up with that level of failure).
But the TV crew distracted him completely and his jealousy and resentment of Neil probably also contributed.
Often branch performance is heavily linked to how successful the town and surrounding area is. Slough is near Ascot, Windsor, Aldershot, Farnborough, High Wycombe, Guildford, Heathrow and Reading. Swindon is surrounded by fields and orchards which don't need much paper.
Sure, there would be factors making him look better than he was, but I think if historically he’d shown the same level of incompetence as he did while the TV crew was there, he’d have been found out years ago.
The follow up movie "Life on the Road". Between The Office and Life on the Road is the "Learn Guitar with David Brent" series on youtube, which also includes Equality Street
What happened to your brother"?
"He died" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
David hadn’t checked out on his job at all he does care about his job
Brent couldn't give 2 hoots about his staff, what have you been watching
As someone who worked in an office while in the civil service in 2000 for 4 or 5 years and then worked again in a few offices in the 2020s.. the difference is chalk and cheese. In the 00s, internet was still relatively new, so you could browse anything in work (outside of pornsites) although there was tonnes of emails with content completely unacceptable in work today- jokes, sexist or otherwise, offensive stuff and it was laughed about. Also you could drink at lunch time, as long as you didn't come back drunk. You drank at christmas- in the office. Secret santa had no limits... bad bosses didn't lose their jobs or end up in deep trouble anywhere near as much as now.. chrismas partys were wild, with endless office gossip..But.. offices are boring now lol... everyones on edge, aware of all the guidelines and consequences & people have been conditioned into accepting stuff that might be good for fairness, but kill the random chaos that the office used to be. In a weird way the uk office is nostaglic to me as well as being hilarious :D
2:44 I'm sorry, but that right there is the exact problem I've been having with this. No, Spencer. That moment isn't supposed to make the audience laugh. That's literally the point. Finchy's "joke" is supposed to be total shit, seedy and incredibly creepy. The audience is supposed to have the same reaction that Dawn does, then laugh at the cringe of how awkward and horrible it was. This is why people have unanimously agreed that you don't "get" the show. You're not supposed to actually find ANY of the direct jokes that the characters themselves make actually funny, because they're intentionally written to not be funny. That isn't the source of the comedy in this show at all. The comedy comes from the situations, the mistakes, the characters themselves, and the awkwardness of their exchanges, not the jokes the characters make to actually try and make each other laugh. If the characters actually made a single joke that was actually funny, then the writers have failed at their job (except Tim and Dawn, because they're basically audience identifiers).
Love the on-going mini-saga of Brent trying to get with the mouthy Welsh girl... shown here when he's pissed as hell for missing out on passing the orange to her:)
Brent brought that reaction from Neil and Jen upon himself. If he'd just done the minimum work to avoid scrutiny, that wouldn't have happened. And that's what he was probably doing before all this started, the minimum. But his ego was inflamed by the "reality show/docusoap" cameras constantly on him, that's his downfall. It's actually a rather clever subtext that most don't pick up on, about the dangers of how these "reality shows" can affect the participants in real life.
that's a good point
Comic Relief (also known as Red Nose Day) is a TV fundraising event that happens every 2 years in the UK. Celebrities do wacky things on TV, the cast of a TV show may do a skit or a dance routine. And yeah, the money goes to good causes, both in the UK and overseas.
One thing which may help it all make sense. David Brent isn't seeking approval, he doesn't want to make friends, as he already sees himself as being uber popular, respected even beloved, hence the comments like, 'look he's cracking up' and it pans to someone not reacting to one of his jokes.
He is oblivious to the fact he is not respected nor really liked. Another thing, Brent, whilst not a very likeable character, he is acceptable to us and fairly harmless, because as Daniel said, there are much worse people out there. He does have a heart, he is trying to be good but he over does it. The epitome of trying too hard. He is literally bluffing saying 'sack me', it reflects his self perception of himself as being a Gordon Gekko type figure of the paper industry, hence him saying there would be a mutiny (as he believes they see him as the captain of a brilliant ship and that they would literally fight for him, their amazing leader), because of his detached and delusional belief that they all love him.
Don't worry we don't expect you to get everything, Daniel is really getting a lot of it and it's great to see his outburst of laughter.
UK humour is about nuances, not as literal. US audiences tend to laugh at the man who snatches the guitar from the teacher and smashes it on a desk, UK would laugh at the facial expressions of the teacher reacting to the smashing of the guitar. I think it was Stephen Fry who came up with that kind of explanation in the differences between our comedy.
And Spencer, yes, we all saw you laughing at the brent meister doing the impression of the dwarf, it's okay mate. You're human. You can laugh. That's what is relateable, we dont need to be told we are bad because we laugh at a bit of art which has been carefully created by experts in their field with the sole intention of inducing laughter.
I honestly have seen someone in an Office doing the David Brent dance, not realising that he was acting more like David Brent trying to make his colleagues laugh. (Ricky Jevais at least did it as an observation, this guy did it for real 🤣)
In 2003 we left our boss handcuffed naked to a lampost after a lot of drinking, this was about 3:30pm on wednesday on a busy Isleworth road... He was a 50+ year old director of a multinational oil prospecting company.
Good times!
I’m 100% sure Spencer thinks he’s watching an actual documentary 🤣. Don’t forget to watch David Brent the movie lads 👍🏼
Why is Spencer calling himself Kindness Sex Change?
He wants people to know he's woke
Comic relief has been going for years, it is fronted by Lenny Henry and people call in with donations for different nominated charities. Also. STILL GAME, You will love it.
Spencer equating himself to Brent is hilarious, Brent is the joke.
Spencer it’s just comedy, go with it.
Stop thinking it’s real life and over analysing everything and remember we’ve all bloody seen it a million times.
No we don’t. Spencer doesn’t get it. He’s the muppet.
20th Century Ricky Gervais has already pointed these inequalities and social shortcomings out through his and Merchants brilliant comedy writing, that’s the point.
At least Boomer would have fallen off his chair when Keith spoke the word ‘minge’ as he bites into a Scotch Egg. Far too subtle for any reaction here.
America had Comic Relief in your lifetime, I'm surprised neither of you remember it. It ran from 1986 to 2011 in US. They didn't use the Red Nose symbol but that's the only difference.
Literally the first time i saw David's dance, i was rolling around the floor. How didn't they even laugh??? 🙄🤣
The documentary isn't strictly canon. If it's the 2017 film. That's a Gervais solo project / spin off. It's not part of The Office.
Red nose day (or Comic Relief as it's normally known) is basically a day where doing anything other than watching the tv is advised, it's basically a bunch of third rate entertainers and wealthy folk telling those of us on the breadline to dig deep for charity while they take all the credit for it
Comic relief and red nose days are also a thing in the US.
Apparently Comic relief USA is not associated with the former charity comic relief USA
Red Nose is a charity event they do every 2 years it’s always comedians occasionally they get sports people to fund raise it takes over the BBC 1 months n one night by the way thanks guys live this❤
I'd recommend PHONE SHOP it's a genius comedy from Britain. Ricky jervais was script editor and it has a couple of actor's from the office and the inbetweeners in it. I've started rewatching it again and it's like I've got torrettes it's so quotable out of nowhere I'm like HOLD TIGHT THE ELITE SELLING CREW, NO HATS NO TRAINER'S, A HOUR, A OWL BLUD 👍
So I watched this when it was originally aired back in Blighty in 2002 and even back then I remember people going 'I hate David Brent' .. but I always found him a figure with a sense of sadness in him. He was always fighting to be 'liked' and couldnt quite understand why people didnt think he was the best thing since sliced bread. I always felt a bit sorry for him rather than have the emotion of hatred some people had.
Comic Relief is a long evening of entertainment with special guests, and a number to call to 'donate if you're enjoying it'. Ali G interviewing the Beckhams was part of it one year. Often there are short, special 'funny' skits from big TV shows like Dr Who.
Spence is just like my son who has " Autism " doesn't get jokes or any sitcoms bless him😘 it goes way over his head🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Why did you put quotes around "autism"?
When there is a Charity event, remember to take plenty of dollar bills.
Omg I've been looking forward to your guys watching this particular episode. Iconic
There's also a David Brent life on the road movie.
Ricky Gervais started out on The 11 o'clock show, where Sacha Baron Cohen debuted Ali G.
I like these guys but honestly this is like feeding a Michelin Starred meal to a dog; the dog will eat it and say it's delicious, but you may as well have given him some Pedigree chum (20 series of Gavin and Stacey)

@@andywrong3247 I really enjoyed watching these guys watch Partridge, but esepcially with The Office it's been "awkward" watching Spencer. Especially as he's talked about his "employment" history, living with/off his grandparents + sharing his music. At this point it's like a dvd extra of Gareth reacting to The Office, so I'm still enjoying it.
@@andywrong3247 I'm kinda dedicated to the car crash spectacle right now, it's kinda bonus episodes of Partridge/The Office/Peep Show.
Daniel's too nice a guy to do that I think, plus guy's got an actual work ethic, proper job + family, I think the Channel's just something fun for him to do, where you can kinda see Spencer takes it VERY seriously.
Dude needs to have some actual life XP - work a job you hate until you get off your lazy butt + get a better one, not just string it out until you get fired then go mooch off family.
The whole "woke" thing Spencer's been talking through seems kinda muddled, as if he's trying to saddle both sides of the fence and will lean into whichever direction gives more praise - further playing into the parallels of Spence/Brent/Partridge.
If Daniel wanted to do the guy a kindness, he'd take him to work for a week - not let any of his staff know who Spencer was and let the dude sink or swim. Then kindly and patiently explain to him why he sank in a real workplace.
