The demo itself wasn't bad, but it did fall a little bit short. It would have been great if you went through all of the frequencies to hear how they sounded, and then chose the ones that sounded best.
There are certain magic spots on a Helios EQ.
On bass drum, the 60 Hz and 100 Hz frequencies give some serious musical punch. On the bass guitar, the same frequencies apply, as well as everything below 2 kHz.
Electric guitars really shine at 2.8 kHz with some 10 kHz as well. Driving the preamps into saturation definitely adds some mojo on these things.
I hope you eventually post the rock mix follow up you said you were going to do.

Do you think it's worth purchasing versus say a SSL SIX

That’s a tough question and difficult to answer. Let’s start with professional studios who have large format SSL Consoles; even those studios have a myriad of mic pres at their disposal. Most recording engineers will use the outboard mic pres on the significant channels (ie Vocals, Bass, Kick, Snare) because those particular channels tend to not only stand out but constantly play thru out the track. Therefore, they need that extra attention to stand out not only in the recording but later down the mix.
SSL Six, is a multi purpose tool. From using it to pass your mic thru the console for recording, to using it live, to using it as an outboard processor. I don’t like that is not an interface though, that’s pretty whack. Also, which SSL Sound are you going for? Old School SSL w/transformers or new school transformerless, clean audio path (Six is the new sound).
At the end of the day, you’ll have to make a big choice, one or two outboard pres w/unique EQ or six channels of miniature console?
Now, I am gonna give you an exclusive sneak peak for what’s coming up. For the same price as the SSL Six, you can get (1)! Empirical Labs Mike-E mic pre. Capable of both mic and line input, Transformer input and output Transformer upgrade option. Has part of the distressor in the compression section (A bit more streamed line). And! Has the HF attenuation to tame overhyped high freq signals. But again, only (1) channel.
In my opinion, outboard is awesome if you have a few options, believe it or not, I was starting to get bored of the Stam 1073EQ as my go to. Pardon the long winded response but I do hope it helps.

Cool, thinking about getting one of these. To me it just sounds super smooth and warm, Even the EQ seems to almost always sound smooth and good. ty

Thank you GEO. Glad the video helped. Yeah, this Mic Pre is pretty astounding as to what it’s capable of. Wish you all the best with the purchase. Don’t know what the timeline is for them right now since Stam should be wrapping up deliveries for them. I’d say to keep an eye out in the used market just in case. Best of luck!

Since you've ordered so much from Joshua, I figured you'd be the one to ask; Does He/Stam Audio let you know when they've shipped something out to you, along with tracking number or does it just eventually show up at your door, without any prior notice?? Thanks ...

Indeed! To the right person you have come. Yes! You do get a shipping notification from Stam Audio w/tracking number. Currently, he’s shipping via FedEx so I also get a notification from them.
