    You're so right when you say towards the end that nothing compares to a front yard cottage garden in place of a lawn! Yours is spectacular, and I love all your ducks, geese, etc -- they're sweethearts!

    So peaceful, so calming for me to watch your videos. I enjoy it all: the cottage gardens, the interior of the “old house”, the animals and their babies. Your voice is calming to me in this hard world.

    I think the the grassy green lawn is what sets your garden off. It is the perfect backdrop and frame for it. Like the perfect vase. It is a beautiful shade of green and so well manicured, quietly laying in the background to hold your garden up for all to see. Keeping your garden all together, while letting it spill over the sides. Like flowers in a vase. Well. That is how it looks to me, anyway. lol

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right about that, I think a garden really needs a stretch of lawn to set it off perfectly.

    I'm so happy that you are posting more inspiring videos of your gardens!!! Thank you! I love your videos and hope to some day have my gardens look as beautiful as yours. I'm working on it ! My yard is much smaller than yours so I can't have as many gardens as you have. I have planted lots of fig trees, peach, apple, and pear trees in my back and side yards. I also like the "boisterous" gardens. I have worked all of my adult life as a floral decorator and have to create "perfect" backdrops for weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and even Presidential dinners so in my home gardens I insist on letting the plants take over and love the carefree ambiance of the country cottage garden. Anyway, thank you Jeri for sharing your lovely garden with all of us!

      I have so many gardens, I would go crazy if they had to be perfect, thank goodness for the "casual" look! I do plan many of my gardens, but then nature takes over and the result it what you see. Love that you have so many fruit trees. I did plant 7 semi-dwarf fruit trees last Autumn.... so far so good!

      The cattle panel that is used as a backdrop behind the garden is attached to the picket fences on either side. We also used long pieces of rebar to stabilize it in the center sections. The cattle panel that was used to keep the animals out of the garden, was cut in half and stuck directly into the earth.

    Spiderwort is all I had growing out front when I moved into my place 2 years ago in July and it really does look horrible once it’s done blooming. It is also invasive but I looked mine up and it is native to NH. It looks pretty early on but I really did dig up so much of it! And it keeps showing up in a different spot now! My neighbor let it take oven her little garden bet completely. Oh well.

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had an abundance of spiderwort, dug it all up, transplanted it along a walkway to make a short hedge. It makes a lovely hedge, blooms for weeks at a time. After the bloom, it develops those interesting seed pods and is good for another few weeks. If it starts to turn yellow and ugly, I just prune all the way to the ground and let it grow back the next year. Sometimes, you just have to make lemonade with lemons.

    Do you have any Sweet Woodruff in any of your gardens? I had some along time ago, and I loved it. I loved how it looked and I loved the fresh clean smell of it. Some say it smells like vanilla. But to me, it smelled more like fresh baled hay that had just been put in the barn. Back when I had it, I found some at a nursery. But I have not see any or even seen anyone talk about it, in years. I think it is considered an herb for some, and some consider it a ground cover for the shade garden or in shady areas that is meant to be natural landscaping. It looks especially wonderful mixed in with the hostas and ferns. Ferns, they might be my favorite of all. I love the way they look growing wild in the woods and creek banks. I love them in paintings and drawings and I love the fronds pressed and preserved and then mounted in a frame, behind glass. But Sweet Woodruff looks so magical. The shade of green, the whorls of the leaves and the little white flowers that sit on top of the, subtle, clean fragrance of the whorls of little leaves.

    It is a beautiful garden. Very happy YT decided to recommend your videos to me today and I have subscribed. One request, if you don't mind, when you put the typing on the screen, is there a way to make it still? For some reason the words are moving up and down and that makes me dizzy. Love Mr. Peabody up on the roof. I grew up on a farm in the SE, but now live in the Pacific NW. Here the deer are eating all my plants and short of very expensive fencing, I have to put up ugly deer fencing to protect small areas. Very frustrating but so many people have moved here that the deer have lost a lot of habitat and are scrounging for food. Funny that they were never a problem when I lived in the country but only are an issue now in what is mostly the suburbs.

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gayla, I know what you mean about the floating text... that happened when I tried to stabilize the shaky video. I can't fix it now, but I stopped using the stabilizer. I think the only way to keep deer out of the garden is to get a large dog, our Great Pyrenees keep those lovely deer on the opposite side of the fence. You do live in a beautiful part of the country, a gardeners paradise... if it weren't for the deer!

    Lots to care for. Did you put a watering system in when you started your front yard gardens or did that come later? My front is very much like yours here on the Cumberland plateau in the country setting. Bern wanting to take sections and work color into the front. The irrigation kind of throws me since it would be me putting it in. Don't want to spend my life watering but so want the paths and gardens. Any idea where to start?

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sherron, No where on this property are there watering systems. This front yard garden is a tricky spot, it's very dry because of the large trees nearby sucking all the water with their roots. I must rely on the rain, which is pretty consistent. I rarely have to water with my hose unless I am putting in new plants that get special attention. I would advise you to go with native plants for the most part and easy-to-care- for annual and perennials that don't need constant moisture. If you watch the other videos, you will see that I am able to grow a good variety of plants without an irrigation system. Start with a small section, don't overwhelm yourself, let your garden size grow bit by bit. I started each garden as a small space that encroached on the lawn with each passing year. Now, my garden stretch all the way around the house and beyond.

    Lovely as always :-) We definitely are kindred spirits when it comes to gardening Jeri. My whole front yard has been turned into a country cottage garden too. For a lot of years it was a rose garden, but last summer we eliminated all the grass (it's not nearly so big as your front yard) to enlarge the garden. All the perennials I planted late last summer and fall have survived and are coming along. I wanted to ask...do you have the blue-ish grey and white violets? Around here they're called Confederate violets.

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow

      Good that your perennials are coming back, it's always a thrill to see them poking thru the ground. We still have loads of grass in surrounding areas but this Front Y. G. did relieve my husband of a lot of mowing. I don't have the bluish grey violets, they sound very pretty! Ours are med. purple and SOMETIMES I find a blue one mixed in.
