Exactly! The driving/flying sections, the epic sprite-scaling and the awesome music blew my mind in 1993.
I rarely played the platform sections, which were basically the MegaDrive game bolted on.

Holy Shit brother yes Lunar for Sega CD is one of my all time favorite games too, also gotta say that the Complete Version for PlayStation was actually worse in my opinion, I love the original so much more, the music in that game too OMG, especially Ghaleon's and especially when shit goes down like when he kills Quark, rather than caging him in that "Complete" version which I hated when that happens in that version, it ruins the power and emotion of that scene, anyway thanks for making my day with that reference, another great rpg not too well known I don't think that I loved was "VAY"

    • @StormsparkPegasus

@blue red Yep...no way to play it directly since my setup only supports HDMI and displayport (no support for analog video or audio). But I did rip the disk and it's super easy to play on an emulator.

I love this game. It was so hard as a kid, but I managed to beat it a few times with some patience. Still own it and my SEGA CD.. might have to fire it up again.
Side note: Imagine ALL SEGA CD titles had been of this caliber? The Genesis really could have had something special down the line if the CD had been a bit cheaper and every title was as good as this or Sonic CD. Way ahead of it's time.

Sonic CD, Formula 1 Beyond the Limit, Silpheed, Snatcher, Heart of the Alien...
To be quite honest, about the games that "Used the Sega CD properly" and were good... most of the cases, what made they really good was the use of the extra raw power the Sega CD had, and not the CD storage. Cut the cutscenes and CD soundtrack and all most those games could still fit a cartridge.
Thing is, having like, I dunno, 64mbs for a home game at that time would be a dream, you could have storage for a lot of stuff.
600 mbs was overkill. Unless you were doing full motion video games (which 9 in 10 were crap), you really didn't have use for so much storage. You could add flavour like FMV cutscenes or spoken dialogue but none of this really made a game *good*.

  • @FilmScoreLynx

The Batskiboat levels were pretty tough on this one, took some serious precision, but sure was fun! Obviously all efforts went into the driving stages and new music for SEGA CD ver, as the platform stages were from the Genesis cart. Those stages aren't bad, though a very "artsy" interpretation of Batman Returns XD. Music was awesome, some tracks really stand out, but not too Batsy :D ... SNES was very close/true to the movie and had the Danny Elfman music, but nowhere near the depth of gameplay of this one.

I still like the driving levels, and the platform levels aren't as bad as people say. Some elements (like the cityscape or the buildings etc) show that the designers used actual reference from the film's design. Nothing groundbreaking except the scaling effect, but Sega put together a pretty nice game (unlike, say, Acclaim with Batman Forever).

  • @jaredbonshire
    @jaredbonshire 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

When this game came out, it had the same graphical impact as Arkham had when it was released years later. On the old CRT TV's this was simply stunning as the blending was "better" than the ultra high resolution we can see today. Soundtrack was tied for second with Sonic CD only below Hook (its John Williams, c'mon). SEGA CD still my favorite game system of all time. The leap in sound and introducing video (although grainy) and some 3D scaling was hypnotic and addicting for 14 year old me. There is no system I have spent more time on than SEGA CD because of games like this.

  • @Relugus

No, this is way beyond Road Rash, as it used hardware sprite scaling (Road Rash used redrawn sprites). The road is a textured scaling plane, while the sprites are all scaled and rotated. Whereas other Mega-CD games which used the sprite scaling had a limited colour palette, Batman Returns doubled it.
It baffles me Sega never ported Galaxy Force, Space Harrier, etc, to Mega-CD.

Despite what was said, I think it is very worth it to get a Sega CD. The Sega CD had a lot of good games. There are several youtube videos on this & you have a Sega Genesis by default plus you can get a Sega 32X for a little more. I have the whole set up (Sega Genesis/Sega CD/32X) and it is a great system to have. I also have an Xbox 360 & Wii but there is something about the old Sega games that make them fun to play. Just make sure you get all the cables and power cords.

One of the few games that took advantage of the Sega CD's power.
Using the extra cpu and scaling chips in some ways it could scale sprites even better than the 3do.Few games even used the Cd's extra chips just for storage and sound letting Genesis run the game. While this games decant its a mindless racing game.A small glimpse of what could have been.
Sega CD was wasted potential it mainly just received ports or lazy fmv games.
