This game was one of the reasons for Mega CD to exist.

it was a simple upgrade. nothing special.
Music on the genesis is better so I’d take the MD version since the CD is only a small improvement

Quite impressive graphics for a 16 bit system. They almost look 32 bit. Well done, and the cd music really makes the game even that more impressive. Well done!

SEGA CD version of this had the best music. It's even better than the HD version they released.
this has better music than the hd remake in 2013. they should have used this score when they did the remake.
I can tell from the 'pencil test' music fading out early that this is the PAL version... oop, never mind, the slow 'round start' music confirmed it.

It has its flaws, but it’s still pretty fun, especially with New Junk City, What The Heck, Big Bruty, the first half of Down The Tubes, Level 05, Who Turned Out The Lights, Intestinal Distress, and the second half of Buttville

the pc version stands out as the best. not only is it the special edition like this one, but the sound effects are much clearer and you can select which level that you want to play when you go through the game for the first time

Yes, there is EWJ on Megadrive/Genesis but Mega CD version had extra level, better music and extended levels. It's more like "Special Edition" of original game.
Had the SNES version, loved it to death.

Daniel DeMayo Sort of. The lead programmer, I believe, worked on that game. Some of the other devs might have as well. The lead designer/animator would take some of the devs to create The Neverhood while the programmer stayed behind to work on MDK and Wild 9. At least, that's what I know.

This video convinced me to lay the money down (all $4 of it) to get a new copy of the Windows 95-compatible special edition. Used to have a copy of it but I don't know what happened to it.Even if it doesn't work it'll be worth buying just to get the soundtrack.

The Sound effects are compressed as all hell and the Music sounds like its a Midi. I have Earthworm Jim HD on PS3 and i have not played it in about 9 years (I still have my PS3)
I had MD version, This one has little changed and little bit longer levels, minor tweaks, better sound quality, graphics is slightly better, but not a whole lot. This game isn't just music change, but more like an update to original version. Of course, Mega CD had Sonic CD and Lunar (only two really good games, I know and remember), and whole lot of crappy ones, but some of them were fun to play, and were slightly different from their cartridge counterparts.
Used to play this with my dad all the time! We got it on wiiware, was always so scared of the 2nd level haha

Random note: I always thought it was Harland Williams who did the crow and the voice work for EWJ. Turns out it was one of the devs who did it. Harland would do a great impression of Jim imho ^^

You'd have saved a lot more ammo if you'd learned to use the whip more instead of trying to shoot everything.
Doc Duodenum is a lot easier to kill if you use the whip. Otherwise, he's really hard. I definitely agree there.
Euro Pimp Productions is a More lot easier to kill with plasma gun.
If I remember correctly, the whip does more damage but it probably is easier to use the plasma gun simply because you can keep a safe distance from him but it takes longer. It's been a while since I've played the Genesis version.

So my guess is since the music was using the sega CD, they had more room to make higher quality audio and sound effects (also did you play the PAL or ntsc version?)

I fucking love this game but never had a Sega CD. I owned the Super NES version when I was a kid and have also beaten the Genesis version on an emulator.
You played well, but you really didn't know that the whip is more powerful than the gun and kills most fodder foes in a single hit instead of wasting 200+ rounds of the gun? For shame.
this and Sonic CD are one of the only good (keyword: good) and playable (keyword: playable) on the Sega CD.

There is, and it also was its original debut platform.
There were ports for SNES, Gameboy, Master System, PC, a god awful GBA version, as well as an unlicensed pirate version for the NES, called "Earthworm Jim 3".
Smartphone, PS3, Virtual Console, and DSi followed.
If you're planning to play this game, don't play the PC-Version.
Download a MegaDrive emulator and play a ROM, it's way better.
Actually there's same installment on PC and it is also less smooth compared to sequel.
