I moved from a 6 speed manual Monaro (Pontiac GTO in the US) to a Jag XKR (auto only) so I feel well qualified to speak on the subject. I'll cut straight to the chase, I miss the manual. Sure, the Jag is the better car in my opinion. It's better built, it's slightly more comfortable, it's drop dead gorgeous, and faster in all respects. And yet, and yet, the big Aussie was far more the most involving car to drive, felt more pure than the XKR and you always knew exactly what the car was doing underneath you. The pedals were perfectly spaced for my size 11 feet, and the pops and crackles from the custom exhaust when you got the rev matching perfect on the downshifts was addictive. My next weekend car will either be a 6MT Mustang GT, or bizarrely, an RCF 😜
Straight line: Auto Everything else: Manual Even in traffic it's not hard to use. Keeps me from falling asleep. Can't tell you how many times I almost fell asleep in an auto during heavy traffic. Plus you have to keep your foot heavily on the brake pedal to avoid creeping forward and hitting someone.
Update. They now have 2018 GT 10spd autos in the 7’s!!! Have you tried shifting your manual from 1st to 3rd to 5th to achieve better mileage? #OldSchoolTrick
There was an 11th commandment, but I heard Moses accidentally dropped and broke the tablet and didn't wanna get in trouble so he buried it. 'Thou shall not buy any performance vehicle that is not thy beloved manual transmission unless thou live in city with a lot of traffic or is over thy mortal age of 70'.
@@Unknown-sb3vh Us manual "fanboys" don't give a fuck if auto is faster. It's all about the enjoyment of rowing our own gears and being one with the car.
Idk which one, I plan on buying a 19 this time next year maybe fall, I’m not worried about learning stick, driven stick a few times, but these cars have clutch assist and auto rev matching. It’s literally rowing gears that’s it, easy. I’d like to take it the drag strip here and there. Not consistently. Automatic cars with an exhaust have always bugged me by the way they sound when they shift. 10r80 not so much. But I don’t know. I’m leaning more towards the manual at this point.
If you're gonna leave it stock and are concerned about having the faster in a straight line acceleration get the auto. If you want to be faster on a road course get the manual. If you plan on modding it for more power then it really doesn't matter which transmission you get. Cuz you're gonna go as fast as you want :) I personally would get the manual. Because I mod.
331Grabber my main thing is I want a fun driving car, I think the manual is most likely the option for me, my work vehicle is a Prius, as soon as he said it shifts like a CVT at light throttle, immediate turn off. I loved my supra which was a mk3 turbo 4spd. Had a lot of fun with that car and it was auto. Im going to settle on the manual.
I’m gonna buy a used automatic 2017 mustang V6 in 2 months. I never learned how to drive a manual and even though everyone says it’s easy to learn, I just don’t feel like doing it because I think learning to drive it and actually being good at driving it are 2 way different things.
lmao let me talk about the great gas mileage on my automatic mustang and how fun it is to drive just kidding I fell asleep at the wheel from boredom and am posting this from beyond the grave.
I choose the automatic for my new 2018 mustang i want it manual but having the 2013 camaro ss with manual i used it most of the time but driving it through hard traffic is the worst.
The 2018+ 10 spd auto has 7 useable gears up to 1:1 while the 2018+ manual only has 4 gears up to 1:1, or 3 less gears to work with. 1st gear in the auto is nutz, is so short that 2nd gear in the auto is equal to 1st in the manual. On top of that Ford made the individual gears on the MT82 quite tall. Doesn't matter how fast you can shift in the MT-82, the gears are too few and spaced too far apart. The only way to make up for it is to add more power. Here's how the individual gear ratios and torque multiplication compare between the two transmissions.. Auto Manual 3.55 PP 3.73 PP 10R80 vs MT82 1st = na 2nd = 1st 3rd = 2nd 4th = na 5th = 3rd 6th = na 7th = 4th (1:1 ratio) 8th = 5th (overdrive gear) 9th = na (overdrive gear) 10th = 6th (overdrive gear) As you can see the auto has the advantage with 3 additional shorter gears to work with up to 1:1 ratio (1st, 4th and 6th) which the manual doesn't have when it comes to a comparable ratio. Obviously that's a huge disadvantage for the MT82. Having said all that the manual is more fun to drive. I still miss it everyday. And the auto in 'manual paddle mode' is often delayed/unresponsive with downshifts or upshifts, and poor rev matching downshifts 4-3 and 3-2 at certain speeds both issues are a huge complaint of mine as I've owned a 10R80 GT for three years now. And on the track the additional gears on the 10R80 lead to more shifting on each lap (and not necessarily faster) which leads to overheating without a proper cooler, often much sooner than the manual. If straight line speed and, unfortunately reduced driver involvement, are the highest priority, the 10R80 is what you want. If you want to feel more connected to the overall driving experience and don't mind being a bit slower get the manual. Just read up on the Getreg MT82 and know what your getting into. I'm really hoping Ford switches to the Tremec for 2022/23 Mustang.
mike mcdonald nope. Still runs and cranks yo perfectly. He said that himself. He just want to go ahead and but the built motor on before he does blow it up. He’s also getting the MT-82 build with a stage 2 kit I believe.
Unless you race him on a road course where the manual will wipe the floor with the A10. Even with the more crappy 2018 MT82 gear ratios the manual was faster.
I think nowadays I think the auto is ok. Just because of this new 10 speed. I’ve never had a auto mustang mine have all been sticks but I would consider a 18-19 in a auto. Especially leaving in sf traffic is stressful in a stick.
I love them both. But they have different purposes. And, they are very subjective for others. In short, though, I don't like hearing how only "manual guys" are true drivers or enthusiasts. I don't think race drivers in a great many race series that use paddle shifted transmissions would like to be characterized as not real drivers. Also, on a road course, if you are not involved because you don't have a manual, you ain't doing it right. Taking a car, any car, near the limit makes you involved...though I agree it is harder to keep a car at the limit with a manual trans car. I've had a 2018 GT PP1 Auto on the track and paddle shifting 10 gears keeps you busy too...including all the basic tasks you have on a track managing grip levels.
Sorry but paddle flipping isnt fun really. Traded in my 2015 A6 for my 18 Manual. I know not the same trans but same idea you just flip more with the A10. My manual lost 3rd and 4th and Ford fixed my issues and will be compensating me for my lost time with my car. Cant ask for more than that and the fixed trans has been money. Thoroughly enjoying my M6 a tune and CAI does wonders. Great video
If and when I buy a Mustang it'll be because I like driving the darn thing, so I'd 100% go manual. I daily-drive a Kia Carens from 2009 (Manual shifter, with a janky clutch add that) and even in City traffic I don't mind it that much, and once you hit the open roads .. I can only imagine at the moment but that feeling of going through the gears must be .. something else. A man can dream, maybe that dream one day becomes reality :)
Such an informative video, thank you, im on verge of buying 2019 gt premium convertable and I agree totally on 6 speed for plain fun, test drove auto, nice but boring , thank s for making my decision make sense.
Thanks for the info. Im thinking about getting a 19 automatic with pp1 package. I agree shifting is alot of fun with no traffic around on some twisty backroads, but in traffic stick is a chore. Thanks again for the info on reliability on the trans. I just worry the auto might have some problems because its so new.
I still can't believe Ford turned the top 2 gears into overdrive on the manual, which means they had to space out the the bottom 4 gears compared to the 2015-2017. As a result the 2018+ 6 spd manual has the same 0-60 as the 2015-2017, with only a slight better 1/4 mile time. C'mon Ford. Get rid of this tyranny and put in the GT350 Tremac with proper ratios for each gear (aside from the usual 6th gear OD).
Manual is the way to go if u enjoy driving and are an enthusiast. Auto well let’s just say I haven’t driven an auto in over 20 years. Only time I drive an auto is when I rent a car. Hopefully the manual transmission shift fork problems people seem to be having is dealt with and fast. Go ford go mustang. Check out my 2017 gt with mrt h pipe and roush axleback!
Ford even made the manual worse in 18 when they switched to 4th gear 1:1 instead of 5th. I'm guessing the 18 6M would be 2 10ths and 1 or 2 MPH faster in the 1/4 with the old gear ratios.
Good vid Bill. I have the 10 speed in my 18 F150 and I like it. In my Mustangs, its been the manual (for all the reasons you mention) but given the horrible big city traffic and congestion I'm around and the lack of fun driver roads, I'd pick the 10 speed if I were to get a new Mustang.
Hey Bill - Cool Video. Iv'e got to tell ya..... I drive a 2017 California with a stick, for me Auto just wasn't even an option. There was a BEAUTIFUL 2018 GT ( Auto ) right next to it on the showroom floor and I kind of gave the salesman a WTF look when he started talking about it. A Muscle Car WITHOUT A STICK ?!?!?!? Very Cool Prospective on the Pro's and Con's of Both - WELL DONE . P.S. - I Friggin LOVE that Removable Front Plate System I bought from you ....... Genius. Thank You for letting me keep my Front End Beautiful !!!! Stay Cool Brother - Pete from Brooklyn.
Thank you so much for your support and business! Stick is certainly the way to go for having fun but yes sadly the 10 speed is faster, it keeps the engine RPM around peak torque for longer and it shifts quicker.
I own an 18 A10 PP and a 19 bullitt 6 spd the A10 is Way Better in everyway .Even on the road course the A10 rev matches and has so many more variables!!!
I just drove the automatic. Sometimes it’s really good. Most of the time it’s ok. But sometimes it’s absolutely awful. If you hold low gears it jerks around the whole time. And if you are to late for shifting with the paddles. The car cuts all power and takes 1-2s to shift up. So no the transmission isn’t as good as Porsche PDK or BMW DCT or the ZF 8 speed. I would only recommend getting the transmission if you want to Cruise or if you want to drag strip. Just get the manual maybe in 10 years when the mustang is hybrid 4 Zylinder you can get the automatic and it will be as good enough. Just get the Manual guys
A great video as usual Bill. On an unrelated topic, for the type of driving you were just doing, how do you rate the comfort of the Recaro v the standard seats?
I am a proud owner of a 2016 Mustang GT manual 3 weeks ago. I’m thinking about adding a Borla catback exhaust system to give it that loud racing mode. Do you suggest I add that to improve it? I have to say.... it’s way more fun driving a stick I enjoy the engagement you are definitely one with the car!
I own a Charger Hellcat with a Borla Atak exhaust, it sounds nuts. If you want your car to be crazy loud go for it, it sounds good, no drone, but it's very loud (my neighbours hate it, but I do love loud vehicles personally, specially v8). Since you own a manual Mustang, please tell me: I am considering to sell my Hellcat and buy a 2019 Mustang. I know how to drive a stick but never owned any manual car and I live in the city with tons of trafic. So I am concerned that I'm not gonna be happy with the auto, 'cause fuck it, a Mustang looks way funnier to drive with a stick, but I'm also concerned that I'll regret it in trafic, and burn my f***ing clutch. What do you think ? Thanks for reading and sorry if my english isn't perfect, my mother tongue is french.
@@MickBiker88 to answer your question my mom taught me to drive stick 20 years ago I forgot to learn stick then about 2 years ago a friend showed me one day it took to re learn my memory came back took about a week when I bought my first mustang manual 2 years later I had to be careful with it it’s my first new stand so what I did I had self learned using my brothers old 2004 Altima he barely uses (he has 2 other cars) to practice on before I picked up my stang. Learning to drive a clutch is pretty easy once you learn you will improve your driving it’s a great experience I watched a lot of TH-cam videos on how to drive stick how to learn “rev match” it’s worth it! You will learn a lot just driving a stick is one thing it’s best to watch videos they will break it down to you and how not to burn your clutch. After 2 months of driving stick I have mastered it but personally I still have a long way to go in learning to drive stick and every car is different when you are driving stick so practice and practice! It’s not hard I promise. As for having stick in a crowded city I would have one car auto and the other manual to practice. I have two cars I don’t drive stick much in the city it’s annoying to keep shifting gears your car will stall and could burn your clutch. I can drive the city I have no problem I’ve done it many times I just find it annoying going bumper to bumper traffic. I would advise against it unless u have two vehicles. It’s never too late to learn to drive stick I highly recommend it. For me I had to catch up learning for the last 20 years I have always owned automatic I wanted stick. In a Mustang if you talking specs owning a automatic car can accelerate much quicker 0-60 you can feel it as for stick takes time to accelerate unless you mastered it and can gear up going higher speed. To answer your question driving stick is for engagement and being I say “one” with your car you are more engaged in driving than auto i find it’s no fun. If you choose automatic you won’t be as engaged in your stang as you would in a manual. I love to drive stick because I’m better engaged and I’m not focused on going on my phone checking texts. Owning a stick lessens your chance getting into an accident because you are more engaged and focused driving than in an auto.
It takes a weekend and a parking lot to learn.....it's really not that hard. Kids/young adults these days can't text or make tiktocs while driving a manual
Automatic. It’s quicker off the line, but more importantly, for those of us who have to deal with heavy traffic, it is SO much easier to drive. I’ve owned two manual transmission cars, and they’re horrible to drive a few feet at a time in a bumper to bumper traffic jam.
All you auto guys have is a car that goes a wee bit faster in a straight line that's it. Manual gives the whole driving experience a funnier and less boring feel. Never once did I think about getting the auto
What exhaust set up do you have in this video in the manual? Sounds perfect. Great tone and sounds like the perfect amount of cabin noise. Enough to be there and let you hear that V8 but not so much that it’s obnoxious or would get annoying.
I debated on the 6 speed but it was not a Tremec and I was like nah, not for me. Auto has its perks. Quick 10 speed auto (in my former 2018 f-150) and I can drink my coffee and get on it if I want to. It’s easier to drift on tight corners with an auto. Heel toe shifting is for experts lol. Once the auto craps out I will put the Tremec in there.
The clutch in mt MT-82 just went belly up. Only 3,300 miles on it. That, and they are also checking out the infamous BBQ tick my engine has. God, I hope this thing isn't a big mistake.
Whole point of an automatic is to shift fast. The fastest shifting auto gearbox today won’t be so a few years from now because that number will improve. Eventually the automatic trans u get today will always be obsolete down the line. The manual however, is timeless, and will always retain its value of letting you be more connected your car and the satisfaction of landing that nice shift.
I just need to know which is faster for roll racing!! Someone help and provide link if possible please! I have the auto 2012 mustang gt and I’m not trying to get another auto. But if this 10 speed makes it better for roll racing, then I’ll get it. I have the 10 speed on my 2019 raptor and I’m not sure if it’s all that.

That's some quick shifting! Driver mod should be on the list.
I love my 2021 Mustang GT Premium with the red interior. I love stick but the automatic is the best in my opinion. I just bought mine about 3 months ago and it was the last new one in Florida. I have already put about 7000 into it and next is a pro charger.
Straight line: Auto
Everything else: Manual
Even in traffic it's not hard to use. Keeps me from falling asleep. Can't tell you how many times I almost fell asleep in an auto during heavy traffic. Plus you have to keep your foot heavily on the brake pedal to avoid creeping forward and hitting someone.
Here's a guy that when he runs he moves faster
7:32 that face though. The shift pulled your facial skin back XD
Lmfao I agree 🤣
Update. They now have 2018 GT 10spd autos in the 7’s!!!
Have you tried shifting your manual from 1st to 3rd to 5th to achieve better mileage?
#OldSchoolTrick
The standard gets you more involved and one with the car and that's where the fun is.
Winning races is where the fun is
There was an 11th commandment, but I heard Moses accidentally dropped and broke the tablet and didn't wanna get in trouble so he buried it. 'Thou shall not buy any performance vehicle that is not thy beloved manual transmission unless thou live in city with a lot of traffic or is over thy mortal age of 70'.
lol
AMEN
I live in NYC and I still see some crazy assholes driving mannies. Hell, a 15 year old mazda 3. Not even a performance car.
Admiral Ackbar I live in queens and drive a manual WRX as my daily. It does get annoying in heavy traffic though.
You did an amazing job breaking down. The auto trans very well done
Had a manual 15 GT now have an 18 with 10 speed auto don’t miss that manual one bit !
Kelon Patterson auto is for pussy real mens drive manual
Hopefully someone that was better at driving it got it after you.
YamahaYFS200 butt hurt manual fanboy can’t sleep at night knowing the autos are faster
Gabriel Cruz real men also know proper grammar lol.
@@Unknown-sb3vh Us manual "fanboys" don't give a fuck if auto is faster. It's all about the enjoyment of rowing our own gears and being one with the car.
14:30 That's the thing that makes the difference for me too...
Idk which one, I plan on buying a 19 this time next year maybe fall,
I’m not worried about learning stick, driven stick a few times, but these cars have clutch assist and auto rev matching.
Butcher.cs is it going to be your daily?
daily driven 5.0 yeah, but I have a vehicle for work, my personal I have now has only 30,000 miles and it’s a 2012.
If you're gonna leave it stock and are concerned about having the faster in a straight line acceleration get the auto. If you want to be faster on a road course get the manual.
If you plan on modding it for more power then it really doesn't matter which transmission you get. Cuz you're gonna go as fast as you want :)
I personally would get the manual.
Another positive is the manual being $1600 cheaper
Just get an automatic if you have an ounce of doubt.
I’m gonna buy a used automatic 2017 mustang V6 in 2 months. I never learned how to drive a manual and even though everyone says it’s easy to learn, I just don’t feel like doing it because I think learning to drive it and actually being good at driving it are 2 way different things.
Great fair review and analysis!
If you have a V8, manual transmission is a must imo
Bill ripping them gears
Ur very good at shifting
lmao let me talk about the great gas mileage on my automatic mustang and how fun it is to drive just kidding I fell asleep at the wheel from boredom and am posting this from beyond the grave.
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah nice one lmfao
They need to put the 7speed in the camaro and mustang like the vette
I choose the automatic for my new 2018 mustang i want it manual but having the 2013 camaro ss with manual i used it most of the time but driving it through hard traffic is the worst.
Always the traffic issue.
Auto Manual
3.55 PP 3.73 PP
10R80 vs MT82
1st = na
2nd = 1st
3rd = 2nd
4th = na
5th = 3rd
6th = na
7th = 4th (1:1 ratio)
8th = 5th (overdrive gear)
9th = na (overdrive gear)
10th = 6th (overdrive gear)
As you can see the auto has the advantage with 3 additional shorter gears to work with up to 1:1 ratio (1st, 4th and 6th) which the manual doesn't have when it comes to a comparable ratio. I'm really hoping Ford switches to the Tremec for 2022/23 Mustang.
itsjusta6 has stock motor and trans making 1,000 rwhp! And it’s a 6 speed manual.
- R E A P 3 R - exactly
- R E A P 3 R - and it just went lol
mike mcdonald nope. Still runs and cranks yo perfectly. He said that himself. He just want to go ahead and but the built motor on before he does blow it up. He’s also getting the MT-82 build with a stage 2 kit I believe.
Manual all day. Driven both the 10speed and manual. Chose manual. Won't choose anything else.
6ixSpeedStang18 nice you chose a slower car enjoy it !
lockdown18Gt I am. And I get a lot of respect for beating people while driving manual transmission. Never needed the aid of a computer. Bang bang.
Unless you race him on a road course where the manual will wipe the floor with the A10. Even with the more crappy 2018 MT82 gear ratios the manual was faster.
lockdown18Gt enjoy turning in your man card
I test drove both still kinda stuck man. Never had an auto mustang. Still sounds stupid (auto mustang). But that auto is fast.
I think nowadays I think the auto is ok. Just because of this new 10 speed. I’ve never had a auto mustang mine have all been sticks but I would consider a 18-19 in a auto. Especially leaving in sf traffic is stressful in a stick.
Very good video idea, and executed extremely well. Great job guys, and thanks. Happy Holidays.
Great video
May i ask how long the repairs took? Mine is 10 days in the dealer from losing that 3/4 for is finally going to work on it tomorrow.
one reason I like auto is that I like that idea I can push a button and my car will start up and I can cool or heat my car before I even get in.

The autos have had a few issues but not as many as the manuals. For a new trans it has been pretty solid.
C'mon Ford. Get rid of this tyranny and put in the GT350 Tremac with proper ratios for each gear (aside from the usual 6th gear OD).
loved this video brother
7:30 look at his face 😂. Mad asf but nice
I choose the manual because it exist but the automatic does make a good case too
I seriously was torn between the automatic and the manual. I went manual for the fun and coolness factor. Driven manuals longer than automatics.
u needed to do a few runs in sports thru track mode of the A10!!!
Awesome review...as always
thank you! it was kinda fun to do too lol
I have always driven stick :( it breaks my heart that the automatic is better .
Ford even made the manual worse in 18 when they switched to 4th gear 1:1 instead of 5th. I'm guessing the 18 6M would be 2 10ths and 1 or 2 MPH faster in the 1/4 with the old gear ratios.
its not better. fake news. let people think it is, more fun for me.
@@iquattro1167 whats lol is audis dont even make sticks cause they think their driveers suck
It’s cheaper to replace clutch than to replace automatic transmission...
@@PastelFroggy performance wise, auto is better. Humans can only shift so fast.
Very well explained mate great video thank you
Hey Bill - Cool Video.
You are the 3rd person who said the SAME thing about that 10 Speed Auto ....... That Fast in a Straight Line ?!?!?! Are the Robots REALLY Replacing Us ?
Anyhew ........ Very Cool Prospective on the Pro's and Con's of Both - WELL DONE .
P.S. - I Friggin LOVE that Removable Front Plate System I bought from you ....... Genius. Thank You for letting me keep my Front End Beautiful !!!!
Stay Cool Brother -
Pete from Brooklyn.
Didn’t even consider the auto for my UK MY18...manual is so right for this car
Love the thin blue line 👍
I have a FBO 15 GT PP and I’m thinking about going with the 18-19 in auto so my wife can drive it 🤔💰🤷🏾♂️
Jay Morgan go with the auto bro. I wouldn’t trust the MT-82
My wife says we can get a Mustang GT next but it has to be an Auto. I'm fine with that now thanks to this video.
You get the auto if a number on a piece of paper matters more to you than driver engagement.
ha interesting - the 6 speed auto in my 1.0 fiesta behaves exactly the same way as that auto - but it's ideal for a city car.
It looked like there was an utter age in between hitting the paddle and hearing a shift
Im thinking the future of muscle cars is automatic/paddle shifts... I will ALWAYS love manuals though, because it takes SKILL....
An auto is only kinda fun when you're flooring it. A manual is fun no matter how fast you're accelerating
Some time you just need a stick fix.👍👍👍👍👍
Ouch on the curbed rear wheel bro lol
Yep shit happens, already off the car on it's way to be fixed.
What exhaust set up do you have in this video in the manual? Sounds perfect. Great tone and sounds like the perfect amount of cabin noise. Enough to be there and let you hear that V8 but not so much that it’s obnoxious or would get annoying.
Nice review
10 speed FTW!!
Great video
very good vid!
thank you
Manual master race
Update?
Whole point of an automatic is to shift fast. The fastest shifting auto gearbox today won’t be so a few years from now because that number will improve. Eventually the automatic trans u get today will always be obsolete down the line. The manual however, is timeless, and will always retain its value of letting you be more connected your car and the satisfaction of landing that nice shift.
Look at that beautiful red GT 😢
I want a 2018 mustang GT when I graduate college. Preferably the manual. Is the manual transmission that bad?
the clear winner for me is a manual
With a new bell housing, do you think you could put that automatic in a '68 mustang with a 390 engine?
thanks!!
Can I put a 2018 GT automatic transmission and a 2004 GT4 mustang to make it a automatic
I want a 19 mustang gt in manual but im afraid to get one cause i keep hearing problems with it should i be scared or just fuck it
6 Speed manual transmission and 5.0 for me.
What rear gears are these cars running?
I just need to know which is faster for roll racing!! Someone help and provide link if possible please!
I have the auto 2012 mustang gt and I’m not trying to get another auto. But if this 10 speed makes it better for roll racing, then I’ll get it. I have the 10 speed on my 2019 raptor and I’m not sure if it’s all that.
Recaro seats? What do you think of them? Is the rev matching on the 19+ worth investing in over an 18?
Personally I love the Recaros and find them very comfortable. The rev matching is nice at times but usually I find it annoying and turn it off.
@@cjponyparts last question good sir. Not driven stick for a while, mustang a good car to get back into it? Was thinking the GT over ecoboost for the more durable shifter. Thank you!
I agree with you on the paddle position. Imo it would be z great improvement if the paddles were stationary and not on the wheel.
so when's the 12 spd coming out?
Does CJ Pony have a kit to allow us 2018 owners to install OEM Rev matching?
Currently only your right leg :) . I have heard there may be an updated tune for it but haven't see anything yet.
