I realise that in most of the scenes when he is heisting he wears sunglasses, whereas he doesn't around his girlfriend.
When he kills Bats after seeing the bank lady recognise him his sunglasses are half broken - his personal life has destroyed his criminal life.

After the third heist goes south, when Baby's ipod gets ahot away, he places his fingers to his neck and uses his pulse to minimize the tinnitus...........THAS GREAT WRITING!!!

Sadly the whole award thing isn't completely meaningless. All of his movies combined haven't made the money a single popcorn blockbuster does. Luckily baby driver accounts for about half that but if the next movie should be a financial flop Wright may find it quite difficult to find funding. Awards make money.

This movie is amazing, I'm just sorry that the mainstream audience doesn't acknowledge it as well. Everyone is always complaining about a lack of original films and then one comes out and barely crosses 100m in US. Anyway, I can't wait for the next Edgar Wright film

Another very good movie is Revolver with Jason Statham, by Guy Ritchie. If you want to get the full effect and meaning of the film, buy or rent the DVD and in the special feature section Play the movie with the director's commentary in the background explaining what's really going on. The full meaning of what the film is trying to communicate will blow your mind.

Thirbo it was cliché but on purpose, it was Edgar Wright’s take on a classic action film. Perfect happy ending and everything. The focus was more the style and music, plot second

The best foreshadowing is when baby has the wind-up car fall off the table, like what happens later when a "wound-up" Buddy is pushed off of the parking garage

My second time watching I noticed that all the quotes on the television at the start are said through the movie. Two examples being the monsters inc line" Nothing is more important than our friendship" and the office line" they grow up so frieken fast" used in the bank when baby got Sam's age wrong.

Something cool about this movie is that if you watch it with headphones, in the first scene where he gets everyone coffee, and he has one of his earbuds taken out, you can hear the music in the same ear that he would be hearing it in.

Then I watched your Star Wars TFA video, and I thought, "Okay, this guy is freaking awesome." It's so refreshing to see a deeply analytical movie channel defend TFA when half of TH-cam seems intent on insisting it's garbage.

Giving you a sub for the awesome video!!! Also, a detail you may have missed: As Baby is ordering his coffee after the first chase scene, we are given an over-the-shoulder medium shot from behind the barista as Baby tells the barista his name. Behind Baby, you can see graffiti on a wall slightly blurred out by the depth of field with a black heart encompassed by blue, wave-like patterns. The camera pans to the right as the barista rolls his eyes to fetch the order, and Debby comes into the shot from outside the cafe. The camera follows her, panning to the left, passing by the same wall, but the heart that was once black is now red. :)

I have a little bit of bias for Edger because I've been a huge fan of his since the first season of spaced back in 99 and love everything he dose. Baby Driver isn't his best work but compared to the majority of films coming out at the moment it's a masterpiece. It's just a shame people don't recognize it for what it is. A piece of brilliant film making which is both simple in its story telling ( it's not meant to be a complex character piece ) but also masterfully complex in its film making and execution.

It’s one that is particularly meaningful to me as my brother Paul was one of the two editors on Baby Driver (& has in fact been working alongside Edgar on all his projects as far back as the TV show Spaced).

Ansel Elgort should have been cast as Young Han Solo. His jacket almost looks like Han's vest from the original trilogy, him owing Doc is almost exactly like Han owing Jabba The Hutt, John Hamm is playing Boba Fett in an Audio book, and Han is supposed to be one of the best pilots (or drivers) in the Galaxy.

@jacksmoviereviews when Baby is at home flipping through the channels on tv, quotes from monsters inc, fight club, and little rascals show up. These are setups for dialogue that Baby repeats later throughout the film. (meeting debra in the diner, talking to gangster about HATE tattoo, and the more obvious one: to Doc)

If you listen before the music kicks in at the start, there is a high pitched whine that represents Baby's tinitus. It's another example of how we are experiencing the film from Baby's point of view, even to the point that we hear what he hears when music isn't playing.

Just watched it: great call! I'm sure this kind of 'one take' walk with all sorts of stuff happening being choreographed has been done many times in music videos (and very likely movies) before and after. But anyway: great call!

Yeah, it have been done before, I guess. What put both apart from the rest is the graffiti on the wall. Great work by the way.

I watched this last week and did a film review on it over on wordpress. Whilst I intially struggled to get into the film (possibly because action films aren't my preferred genre, and I initially found the plot a little complicated to follow), by the end I appreciated it much more. The last quarter of the film had me hooked, and on reflection, and viewing key scenes for a second time I realised how smart Wright was in the directing of the movie. (I noticed this after spotting the graffiti addition in the opening credits). I'm keen to watch the film through a second time as now I know the plot I'll be able to appreciate Wright's style more and spot the little details I may have missed earlier.

Fun fact: The scene where Baby was being chased by the police on foot, Sony wanted to cut that scene, but Wright wanted to keep it, so he had to pay out-of-pocket to keep that scene in the movie.

i know this doesn't apply to much of your audience but if you format your entire video in ultrawide format for those of us with ultrawide monitors it can fill the screen in a bit better without having boxes all the way around. otherwise love your analysis!

The fact I liked the most right after watching this movie without analyzing it was the fact that we had no clear villain as to speak of. This is something that happens rarely in such films. Even when people did bad things in terms of our protagonist, they were either things that we did not see coming or that were, from their point of view, completely understandable.

I love simple but well executed movies like Baby Driver. Of course some movies change something in us, but good and well written entertainment is something I miss about movies. Nowadays many movies try hard to connect with the audience but fail because they try too hard, try to create substance into superficial matters and ends up being noise. Using scripting technique has became somehow secondary in many blockbusters. I like simple and well done stories. That's why I love Tarantino's cinematography. It's a very cinematic universe, very movie-like, but well written.

Something I never noticed until you mentioned the song lyrics, is when Baby sees Buddy in the diner, the song, "Never Going to Give You Up" symbolizes how Buddy is relentless after Darling was killed and he blamed Baby

small detail that i noticed on my third viewing: when baby is flipping through the channels near the beginning of the movie, the little rascals is playing alfalfa says "you are so beautiful", which baby says to deborah the next time he sees her. he flips to another channel with john krasinski saying "they grow up so freaking fast don't they", which baby tells the post office worker after guessing sam's age wrong. the next channel is monster's inc with mike saying "you and i are a team. nothing is more important to me than our friendship", which baby says to doc who eventually realizes where it's from. after that comes a brad pitt in fight club saying "how's that working out for you?", which baby says to the guy who puts the asian in home invasion, prompting the response "who doesn't like hats?" the last channel doesn't contain any quotes used in the movie, but it does talk about a relentless bull, foreshadowing buddy's relentless chase after baby. it's interesting how edgar wright included such small and overlooked details into a movie already full of them.

One thing I saw mentioned was that at the start of the movie Baby has a white shirt, but as the story progresses towards the climax and Baby loses control of his life, the shirt becomes grey. Then at the end when he's out of prison, his shirt's white again.

if you watch the film really closely you'll notice that as the scenes progress baby's shirt drops shades from white to almost a dark grey before the resolve of the conflict.

I love this movie, but everytime the romance comes to the forefront of the story especialy during the first and second act. It starts to take me out and my cincal love hating self finds it hard to believe that these two people can fall in love so fast and easily from the begging. I just have a really hard time getting into love at first sight because that often sounds like lust to me. Other than that it was an thrilling, energetic and beautiful ride.

I would argue that the first and second act reflect a 'love' as archetypal as the characters. For me, the third act was the only thing that kept me from completely hating the romance because it gives the characters a very long time in which to get to know each other and turn "crush" (liking someone you barely know) into "love" (a lasting feeling with someone you do know). I think that's backed up by Baby's initial black & white fantasy of Debra and what he sees as he walks out of prison. The initial fantasy is unrealistic: black and white, 50s car, Debra and he in 50s clothing. It's an idealized but unrealistic view of their relationship. The final view begins in black and white but then switches slowly to color. The car is still the same, which makes sense as he and Debra had an interest in cars and she had time to catch up. They still each wear the same 'style' of clothing in that his clothing suggests casual but smart, and her clothing suggests a soft romanticism. But now what they're wearing is clothing that can be found in a store, rather than a costume shop. It suggests that his optimism about their relationship is now a much more realistic optimism, the kind grounded in a longer relationship than a five minute conversation in a diner, a load of laundry, and one fancy dinner could ever provide.

Be Ba Thank you. That makes a whole lot of sense. I do agree that the relationship feels more real and grounded in reality in the third act, but they still feel way to overcomitted for a crush during the earlier parts. Maybe ive never been in this kind of love. But i feel thr film doesnt give enough time to make it believble. Its like two perfect angels falling inlove in hell. What are the chances

In a movie that spends half its time pulling stunts that couldn't happen without a ton of contrivance using cars, and turns on a near-perfect mastermind magically able to pull together amazing jobs using a crew he barely even knows, it's the unbelievable romance that gets to you, eh? I mean, it gets to me, too, and I've been in a romance like that.
But this is why: Jack talks about it: it's because the romance slow the movie down. Shifting from the high-octane thrill of car-chases, the sinister tone of criminals conspiring, and the frustration of his home-life with Joe, the slow-dance of the romance is a massive downshift in tone and it jars with the pulse-pounding rhythm of everything else. Part of the reason the third act works is because Deborah gets swept up in the desperate speed of it, and the rhythm synchs until the far more gradual pace of the ending with the arrest, the court, and the jail and *everything* has finally gone slow.

I think that the music is truly meaningful, and more than people think. Some of the songs played, directly reference certain character's feelings and points of view. I think Wright paced out the romance completely purposefully, in that it happened so quick because the music propelled the relationship forward. Which is actually a completely original way to use music in film. Genuis!
