As British fan I've been following his gradual learning process in the 400m and I think he still has a lot of potential to improve his stamina and get faster. Thank you for spotting him and featuring him in today's video 👍
Used to train with Charlie as a kid (13/14 years old) when I was at Colchester Harriers (still his club) Love watching his career because of that personal touch🙌🏻
Charles also attended St. Benedicts School, Colchester. So up to this point, I was the only red head, from St. Benedicts and Colchester harriers, but ran cross country instead. Great to see Charles doing great. In regards to Quincy Hall he went to my Junior college alma mater, College of Sequoias, California
Charlie Dobson is actually who every hardcore stan of a certain fellow recent 400m convert thinks he is as he capped off a very good debut 400m season with the DL Final win along with his Euro Champs Silver, 10 fastest times between 44.2 - 44.9 & added to his multiple 43s splits to help GB win OLY 4x4 Bronze! More short sprinters out there need to make the move up like he did!
Right. The sprints have way too much talent, he wouldn’t have factored in the 200m or the 100m. That said, he won when all elites were exhausted and already peaked. Let’s see his times next season.
As a Team USA nut, the may times since Olympics watching replays of the whole race, but mostly Rai holding off Tebogo in that 4x400 relay, each time I am amazed that Dobson was as close in the end. Had never heard of Him prior, however, I knew then he was very fast to even be in shot. Held his own, Impressive!
In an interview after the event Charlie mentioned something that Rob picked up inadvertently. He said the main reason for moving up in distance was that he kept getting and aggravating niggling injuries in the sharper events. He is now largely injury free and therefore getting stronger from concentrating on 400m training.
I’m hoping a move to 400m will make him less injury prone. Thank you for picking up on Charlie. His victory in the DL was the highlight of the night, for me.
I love the point at 8 minutes 10secs in where a slow motion shot shows relaxed form at high speed, nice torso position and power from the hips that fast sprinters possess. A lot of that form is missed being seen unless it's slowed down. His 400 relay split in Paris for bronze was 43.33
Thanks for this. You make this video interesting. So many sports videos are narrated by some generic bot; not only do you make it interesting by your voice and manner but you've got something to say, you've thought it out. There's all the world of difference.
Charlie Dobson is still only 24 so he has definitely not been one of the best known sprinters for a decade. However, I agree that he has huge potential over 400m...training for it will also improve his 200m capabilities. Is he a potential Olympic champ? Maybe.
Enjoyed the video, Coach Rob. Don't quite follow Track and Field all that much, so I'm interested in getting a comparison from you on how big of an upset this Dobson win was. What could you compare it to if we were talking about other sports? Greetings from Panamá City, Panamá.
Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it. It's probably similar to an NBA playoff team that is the 8 seed beating the number 1 seed in the first round. I hope that helps.
Do you think Track would be more successful if they adopted a "chess tournament" type structure. This would encourage regular people to compete at track events in different divisions. Then there is the open section, which would be for the top athletes.
There are so many reason why "no" is the right answer. There is not enough time and room for infrastructure to let everyone run, jump, throw, ... A WC is more than a week non-stop, with only the very best competing, it might give an idea. You have amateur, national competitions, where the better ones get selected. It probably just will look painfull to watch someone sprint 25 seconds on a 100m dash. Chess doesn't have that problem, a big room with multiple tables. Also nice that it is possible there, but it won't work with Track&Field.
I think he is helped by the fact that the UK has always had a strong 4x400 team and so the 400m event is a draw for 200m runners that see a better chance to win an international medal.
Matthew Boling of the United States is considered a "journeyman" sprinter, but has faster PR's for both the 100 meters and the 200 meters than Charlie Dobson does. Boling is also not far behind him in the 400 meters. I guess your level of recognition also is determined by what country you compete for.
Boling is less of a specialist and his multi-event fame was primarily due to his performances age at a young age. Currently Dobson is competing at a level above Boling regardless of nationality.
Hey Coach, how about a video on Diamond League moving from NBC/Peacock to Flotrack next year.? I'm not too happy about it. If I was a US pro runner I would not like this at all. The number of US viewers of track and field will likely decline significantly. Only hardcore viewers are going to be watching now.
Usain ran both 200 and 400 as a junior. He had medals at Carifta in both events. He also had the world 200 m junior record. He later dropped the 400 and began running the 100 along with the 200.
This is why you don't brag about your favorite Track and Field athlete and disrespect other athletes. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (women's 400mH speclaist) fans are particularly obnoxious about this disrespecting Femke Bol on uploaded TH-cam posts about Bol's dominance in World and European Championships, women's 400mH. On the men's side in 400mH we have Karsten Warholm (WR holder "Mr sub-46") and Rai Benjamin and Alison dos Santos, who all have a chance to win in any given meet. People want to put Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone up on a pedestal and make her appear as if she can never be beaten. That puts a lot of pressure on Sydney, which is a shame. Real fans would not place that kind of pressure on Sydney to perform without ever failing. Why her fans are so jealous of Femke Bol's talent is a mystery? If Sydney is not in the race, her fans will post comments that if Syndey was there in the race that Bol would have been demolished. Sydney's fans can never appreciate the accomplishments of Femke Bol. Femke Bol owns 9 of the TOP 20 times in history in 400mh which is the same number that Sydney owns. Glad to see Charlie Dobson get the win here. Congratulations! I hope fans of other athletes will be good sports and acknowledge Dobson's accomplishment/win here and not say he would have lost badly if another athlete they are fans of was racing in this same race.
Not quite the right heading. He hasn't run a 100 since 2022 - his best was 10.28 [and 10.12w in 2020] - but he did run 20.19 in 2022 and 2023 - so, very much a 200m guy who's moved up. A slightly quicker first half and his strength will take him under 44 next year.
So he's the Brittish Matthew Boling!? Seems to have surpassed him now actually. Im from Texas so i lived through the Matthew Boling "Walk on Water" hype train. Glad that is over, he needs to do long jump cause sprints in the US not going to pan out for him. Quincy is up next!!

Great that you picked this up, I watched him in the Manchester stadium for the British Olympic 400m trials and he was so shocked that he won.
Its encouraging that he always seems to be carrying his speed through the line as others fade. Such potential and relaxed smooth efficient form

yes, 400 metre starts don't need to be as dynamic as the short sprints. He obviously has speed endurance in abundance
He looks an ideal 400m guy. Tall, long stride. Obviously has a lot of speed, looking at his 100, 200m times. Roy b, CapeTown south africa 🇿🇦
He's had a terrible time with injury. Apparently Iwan Thomas suggested he give the 400m a go.
That guy was used to running in cold foul weather, so, this was right up his alley.
Like your videos. Keep up the nice work.
I’m hoping a move to 400m will make him less injury prone. Thank you for picking up on Charlie. His victory in the DL was the highlight of the night, for me.

Jon Regis, a top British 100 and 200m runner also had a great ability at 400 and would run in the 4x400 relay team!
World champ no less, beat the US team, tee hee.

A criticism of the post, which was otherwise very good, would be that you should show the whole of the successful 400m race. Probably at the end.
He already needs to start thinking about the 800m.
Built speed as a youngster in the short sprints…… then became a man and took on the 400.
What is a dash?

Boling is only famous for being fast at an early age something white sprinters never do.
Boling is running for the USA. He has no chance among such talent. Dobson is lucky to be running for the UK
Boling's PR is 0.61 behind. Dobson's PR would've made the Individual USA 400m team, so what are you getting at?
Boling is less of a specialist and his multi-event fame was primarily due to his performances age at a young age. Currently Dobson is competing at a level above Boling regardless of nationality.
