Wow Karen, you are phenomenal. I just have to complement you again for taking your time and explaining each step and not speed taping. You inspire me to the max! Thank you so much!
Tha;nks to stumbling on to Karen's videos, I am now HOOKED on pastels. Sadly, it's a very expensive hobby, LOL. I LOVE IT. I Love Karens art and have learned so much.
Karen, thank you for another inspiring video - a beautiful view, your familiar wonderful, confident manner of painting. It's so special when artists are remembered. Thank you for Herman's tip with the wet sponge for error correction. It's a useful one. Thank you, Karen, for being there for us!
I have a collection of pastel magazines, too. All of the Pastel Journals - and, remember that Australian pastel mag. that came out about the same time, that lasted only 1 or 2 years? I thought it was a wonderful publication, and was sorry to see it go. Love your tutorials. You're a wonderful teacher. Early next year, I will become a patron. You're worth it!
Fascinating! Thank you for the tips, Karen. I use furniture-grade pumice in my top gesso coats when I prep panels for oil, but I do a sanding at the end to make the board smoother. Wonderful to know I can use a similar technique if I want to do some pastel panels! You are lovely for sharing!
Hi Karen. Since I know you on TH-cam, I make pastel. And my pastel improve, I'm French, and I don't understand all you say , but what kind of support you take (watercolor paper or other) and what is your powder to realise a cheap paper pastel to work on it. Many Thanks to share your talent. It's Always a pleasure to follow you on you tube with your tutorials. And this landscape is wonderful... Thanks to you Karen. Kisses from France
Thanks for sharing; I love that painting. I recently made several papers with gesso, some over watercolor base and others mixed with the acrylic paint. Indeed, I fought with some of the texture, but rubbing in the base layers will solve that. Thank you ever so much for showing us so many options!
Love your super inspirational videos! I would love to try making my own boards...anyone have recommendations on what grit pumice to use as additive? Heart Hugs Creative Family!
Yes. The materials I used are all acid free. Some Nupastels are said to be fugitive so if one is concerned about the color of the ones surface to remain the same it is best to avoid them,
I understand that there are some fixatives that don't change the colors but I am not knowledgable about them since I don't use a final fixative. I store finished paintings under glassine paper until they can be framed. Thanks for watching!!
Thank you, Karen. I just ordered a Nomad set from Blue Earth. They were on Sale! Tried to buy your set from Terry Ludwig’s but couldn’t find it on their sets. Weird.
Josephine Herrera That is odd! I just looked and it is there on the website. I do know that you can only get it directly from the Terry Ludwig website and not from other art stores. terryludwig.com/collections/frontpage
I have made a grey surface using white and black gesso on masonite panels. I have not used the pumice powder, is it truly necessary? I did not see a link in your description. Wonderful real-time video experience! Thanks and I will look for more from this series!
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. As this video was originally for my Patreon Page the links are there. I need to rewatch to see what link I mentioned! Thanks for watching and thanks for letting me know.
I’ve been watching you paint all night. It’s so soothing. Your descriptions are perfect, too.

Thank you so much for your feedback Vivian!

Thank you, Karen. I always learn so much from your videos.
Great video!! Lots of interesting info. ❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
I paint on everything. Cereal boxes, cracker box ,any thin cardboard and use clear gesso for the surface. Saves a ton of money on "studies".

Awesome Karen!!! Love this video.... and I love Heidi and your vocal kitties :)

So interesting. Thank you.
I really like your work!!!
Thank you so much!
Thanks! was really wanting some more pastel boards but would need to save for a bit. Now I can make my own for pennies!!!
So fine thank you, will pull out my old Pastel Journals.
Yes! They are filled with treasures!
Love this lesson, thank you! I'm so looking forward for your new idea "lessons from old Pastel Journal magazine". :D
Love it ❤️👍🏻🙏🏻
Thank you!!
Thank you.
Awesome! So can a homemade surface like this hold many layers of pastel? Many layers like UArt paper or Sennelier pastel card etc? Thanks.
Great video
Thank you Stephen
Hey Karen, this is a great video. How do you think this surface would do with alcohol on the under-painting? Thanks for the great content!
Thanks!! I have tried alcohol and it works fine and doesn't remove the grit!
Love your super inspirational videos! I would love to try making my own boards...anyone have recommendations on what grit pumice to use as additive? Heart Hugs Creative Family!
Thanks for watching. I actually prefer to use straight clear gesso wit no added grit. It is just gritty enough for me!
Well thats better yet! Blessings to you and yours.
This is the same surface that Ellen Eagle uses, and she has a exact recipe for it in her book.
Thanks!! I need to revisit her book!
What does your Kitty want? LOL
Hi the color you tone it with needs to be lightfast. And the surface must be acid free too.

Shout out to Herman!
So what exactly can we do to fix the pastel to the surface without using something that darkens the painting?

Where can you buy single Nu pastels
I buy them open stock online usually at Blicks.
What size of granules is your pumice powder?
I am rally not sure! I've had it for so long and it is in a different container. I got it at Dakota pastels.

Karen Margulis I believe the link was for the pumice, since it related to my question I still have a lot to learn about how to leave a comment!
There's an interesting short video on Herman's life here: th-cam.com/video/EIbnaKfkavc/w-d-xo.html
