    The one thing about the Mongols is, if you can pull off the "walk-In" trick and steal one of the other four civ's early, you have a chance to convert a lot (like 7-8) of barbarian villages (because you can get to the villages that the conquered civ did not beat yet) and before you know it, you'll have a ton of science squares, making a tech victory pretty easy and even the other types of victories are do-able.

    • @frozenironforge5133
      @frozenironforge5133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True, the trick is building up those cities. It can be difficult and take a while. Most of the times those cities aren't in the best place (resource wize). It's especially hard if you're 1 population converted city gets flipped because of an enemies cultural influence, or just taken over because of how thin you could be spread. Still, if you got to convert a city AND get the gold/tech/unit bonus, then they'd be a great civ.

      @ifutureman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I play almost exclusively mongols in single player. Manager to get a single science victory on deity by genuinely cheesing the shit out of the game. Managed to set up a genuinely amazing early game production city by capturing a barbarian villager. I was probably helped by the fact that I got an early walk in off Egypt who had the colossus, discovering two artifacts (one of them was definitely the knight’s Templar, I don’t remember the other), and I managed to stalemate the English and Arabs long into the late game. However, I’ve played around 80 deity games with mongols. I have won a single game. The mongols are fun to snowball with, but hard to win with.

      Late reply but it helps to learn how to game the AI. If you declare war they'll put all their resources into building armies, then you can negotiate piece when they waste all their time marching over to your palace.
      Also make sure you take all their settlers and kidnap their great people, build spy rings since China will definitely have spies, make sure you're the first to most techs too.

    The Mongols barbarian huts turning into cities works great on the Mountains of Madness map. I had cities on the sides of cliff, and while they took a bit to gain population, they gained a huge amount of trade and were easy to defend. Plus, enemy troops couldn't block your resources as easily.

    It's a pretty good list, but as the former #2 player in the world for years in online multiplayer, I'm going to make some corrections. 1. Spanish, 2. Americans, 3. Chinese. When I use any of these civs, I can't lose the game, period. Why Spanish? Navigation + double explore cash give them such unbelievable early bonuses, it's too late for anyone to catch up with them. 1. Double explore cash can net them the earliest free settler in the game, so two cities very quickly. 2. Navigation = early galleon + explorer (even more explore cash), 3. Early access to all the minor wonders, including Atlantis (200+ gold, two great people, an ancient wonder, a knight, 3 techs), 4. Early access to the best 1-square islands with dye, whale, and fish... these islands are safe and are just gold/science machines. 5. Whale... jeez this is ridiculously good... fast growth = extra gold/science squares, or extra production, or extra settlers for city spamming... it is unbelievable. 6. Surprise walk-ins from the sea... they usually get 1 of these per game, at least. 7. Naval support in combat, it is a huge early bonus. 8. They are always just 1 stolen/earned/found great builder from insta-building the East India Company, which is an immediate game-ender. Name me a civ stronger than this. I'm currently playing Arabs only, and am the highest-ranked Arabs player... they are much tougher than you say. Some civs, like Egypt, are highly dependent on which other civs are in the game... Romans in the game will ruin Egypt's ability to get the free trading post, which when coupled with Colossus, makes Egypt very difficult to beat. Chinese, with free Writing, can easily beat Egypt to the free trading post as well. English in the game ruins the strategy of getting to Monarchy first for the free great person for all other civs. English in the game also make for the primary target for Spanish to take their capital with either sneak walk-in or using naval support and get free Monarchy tech to allow for use of the dye on all those little 1-square islands.

    I personally like the 2% gold interest more than the 50% because I don’t go for economic victories as much as tech, but for an economic victory I think the 50% is actually better, because yes early game it bites due to inflation, but late game you’re going to reach that 20,000 gold milestone quicker than anyone else to be able to win the game with world bank. So it’s situationally good in my eyes, but yeah, I do think 2% interest is universally better, even though early game 2% gets you nowhere until you have at least 50 gold for 1 free gold a turn.

    • @PoorStretch
      @PoorStretch 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed what you said on all fronts. One thing I'd add, is that be careful having too much tech overflow with 50% gold civs. You don't get the 50% bonus on gold from tech overflow but stuff is still 50% more expensive to rush. From that perspective it would actually be a "negative" bonus

    The thing about the Anarchy bonus with the Indians is that it's great for using code of laws swaps without consequence. Well, apart from how easy it is to crash the damn game on multiplayer doing it. If the military adviser tells you about a domination victory during anarchy then the game dies.

    • @Justforadele
      @Justforadele 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@civrev Yeah, there's a lot of things that the metagamers exploit. But that bug is a killer for the Indians, without it they could basically use the benefits of monarchy and democracy and then swap to either fundamentalism or code of laws on specific turns to maximise their edge. I truly believe that the most broken exploit is called Barb Glitching, it's when you pause during an online barbarian fight and let it end. This resets your turn, it's almost unbeatable with a war edge, especially the Aztecs who would basically overrun any barbarian turn one whilst researching horseback riding. Luckily, you only see someone use it very rarely online.

      You neglected to mention the fact that when did Egyptians have Rivers running through their desert and they pop irrigation whether for free or they actually researched it, they get an extra food for each desert tile that the river touches. That's potentially, with a Trading Post, 4 research and two food per desert tile.
      Also, if you actually research irrigation and not just pop it as a bonus, you do get the plus-one population bonus.
      Also, plus one Rifleman movement is a solid bonus. I can't tell you how many times I've used my rifle men to attack with Cruiser Fleet and as soon as they take my opponents City, they already have arrived from an Army in it which is very hard to take back unless its flipped.
      Also, you really sold short the Hanging Gardens Wonder. All You focus long was trees and science squares, but really what you should have been taking into consideration is that the Egyptians have that plus one food / desert Isle. If you were to settle with three or four desert tiles and only one tree tile you can set your production to one tree and to Desert, still pull in food and continue to grow, and set your science to gold. And it's the same as having two tree tiles.
      I play the Egyptians, so I tripped to hear his commentary on them, but I will say that one of the best Civ players I know rocks the Mongols. I get up to about 20 Technologies before he's past 5 but all of a sudden he makes a jump and he's pulling more Tech than me within about five turns. It's insane. You also sold short the Indians and the French both of which I have seen Mastered by a few other players.
      Ultimately, what's it really comes down to is knowledge and luck. Luck on what resources are available to you and knowledge of how to play the game with the hand that you're dealt and who you're going against.
      I rate his critique a. 5/10.
      He obviously knows quite a few things about Civ, but he also has wide gaps in his knowledge and his opinion comes off as being fact. Its not, and he has much to learn. I've been playing Civ Rev for around 5 years now and I'm still learning new things.

    i play germany pretty much constantly, and if you can get at least a 5/10-block difference between another player city, you can play wide and grow tall mid to late game. i tend to start off slow and dominate with tanks mid game, because growing wide allows for a more science-based build early on

      Correct. They are not there for early domination. They are the early, mid and late game tech giants. Get a decent build city tech like mad domination well before 2,000. Science or culture victory even earlier.
      You can't just dismiss them because they can't do one specific thing in the early game. They are a well balance civ that is always in the game.

    • @PoorStretch

      @@Maniak76 my problem with Greek is more to do with democracy vs code of laws and when to expand with them. If you stay in democracy they cant expand. But getting code of laws and expanding too early makes them more of a generic civ that may not use it's starting bonus to the fullest. I would error on the side of beelining for COL and expanding then switching back to democracy later (maybe). But like compared with China who also has 1/2 price libraries and China has so many great other bonus, All things equal China will blow away the Greek unless a high amount of luck is involved.
      Of course just beating diety AI if that is what we are talking about you can do with any civ it's not hard, but when trying to play games with constraints or just trying to get your victory as fast as possible, Greeks are ok but can't compare with Chinese or American for sure. Personally I feel like Joe's rankings from 13-7 could all be intertwined. 6-3 you could argue placement.. and 1 and 2 are definitely 1 and 2. The 1/2 cost rifleman coupled with Loyalty is actually meta, it makes turning yourself into a mega fortress extremely cheap and easy. Rifleman is the best defensive unit for like 65% of a game's duration. Loyalty Riflemen are excellent vs Canons, Fighters, Tanks, name it, they only become weak when your enemy gets Artillery, and even at that they can be tough to beat.
    I'm telling you, 1/2 cost Loyal Riflemen is totally OP.

    The even worst thing about being Mongolia is that the barbarian village drops the city in the same spot that the village was. In my opinion they could’ve fixed this by making barbarian villagers give you settlers every time

    IMO the French are significantly better than bottom three (though I would not put them in the elite category of course). The starting Cathedral & +1 Cannon attack put them in good stead for Cultural or Domination victories, & starting knowledge of Pottery I love - walls are highly valuable & expensive to build - I demand a free one & Frwnce is better poised for this than any other Civ.

Overall great ranking, I agree with most of your choices. My personal favorite civs to use, even if they aren't actually the best are:
    1. Greeks
    2. Egyptians

    Really good list, I agree about Americans too, they probably are the strongest, but you need to more knowledge to use them effectively more so than China, Aztec and Zulu, who any idiot can use effectively.
    Also with the Americans in medieval, they can build a galley for 30 gold, and sell it back for 30. This means they can buy one, move the ranger off, and sell it straight away, basically giving them free ranger units, which are useful for defence etc.

    50% gold, here are my thoughts. The fact that it causes 50% inflation on the surface makes it a "non" bonus for me (it doesn't help or hurt). However, 2 things to consider (one pro, one con).
    Pro: It can help you hit economic achievements faster if going for gold victory (or just want to hit a certain milestone)
    Con: It can actually be a "negative" bonus if you have too much science overflow. Because you aren't getting the 50% on the "overflow", but stuff still costs 50% more. So too much overflow can actually make this something of a "negative" bonus.
    So really, unless you are going for a gold victory, it is probably actually a slight "negative" bonus - or at the very least you should be micromanaging your cities so that you have as little science overflow as possible.
