Depends. It might startle people at first, but a lot of people did view the USSR as the next enemy even in 46, and if you added 84 years from now anyone who remembers their history classes would just shrug and assume a new collection of weird alliances. They'd probably be more surprised to learn that everyone in Europe was totally unprepared for this after 84 years of at least notional peace on most of the continent.

Huge areas of Canada's prairies last year recorded a record drought which is huge since Canada is the 5th largest producer of wheat, making these situations all the more dire.
I looked it up ,Canada and the US together produce more wheat than Russia. Canada on its own produces more wheat than the Ukraine. China produces the most then its #2 India.
@@Crashed131963 Aaannd how is that relevant? One is that op said that Canada has faced a drought, so that makes her produce wayy less. Two is that Russia and Ukraine combined produce the most than any other country and countries combined even except China, but she isn't relevant to the discussion, and we are grouping them together because neither can export in the situation the two face. And 4, is that this isn't a d*ck measuring contest, when we talk about the world as a whole, even 5% less of anything could be detrimental to everything else. Let alone when we talk about such colossal producers of wheat for the world.
I live in Groningen, basically on top of the gas field. Recent polls have shown that a majority of citizens here now support extracting more gas to decrease our dependency on Russia, and I agree with this. However, this will mean that the government has to invest more into making buildings earthquake-proof and compensating people, which it obviously does not want to do. So it took years to get recognition and compensation for the damage up until now, let alone the damage that extracting more gas will cause. For years it felt as if the national government spent the money it made from extracting gas on things that did not benefit the locals at all. If we had been quickly and adequately compensated from the start, the problem would have been much less severe. But now I can already predict the protests that will occur over the next 10 years.
Can’t you make that EU issue? I would say since that gas will come as strategic for whole EU energy policy, there could be some kind of EU fund for such thing. 400 million people splitting the bill for damages to locals would have easier time than government of 17 million.

Hey, I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm saying that it's very misleading when you say that Finland imports most of it's gas from Russia. I know you have to use stock footage, but the clip at 12:53 to show damage to Dutch houses is laughably inaccurate. You show complete devastation, presumably hurricane damage, whereas in reality we're talking about cracks in brick walls. A while back they talked about a fire at a chemical refinery that happened near me, they showed stock footage of the downtown area of a city a few miles away.
@@michaelb1761 3.6 is a bit misleading. Because the kind of soil in Groningen makes it worse and the fact that the earthquakes are way more close to the surface than normal earthquakes. @@kenbee1957 but the difficulty on declaring war in the modern day isn't caused because of the world's interlocking economies. People used that reasoning before WW1 occurred. To them, countries were too interconnected by trade, and they would never declare war on each other. They had no idea that the 20th century would be one of the bloodiest, most destructive eras of human history.
That’s because we believe that people are generally rationale and logical, which is furthest from the truth. There are plenty of videos about war, terrorism, genocide, and other 'dark' or 'controversial' topics on TH-cam that do not get demonetized despite containing real footage, images, etc. Another thing to note is that age-restricted videos do get picked up by the algorithm; they aren't necessarily the same as unlisted videos. If the video is from an educational standpoint, like most of yours are, it shouldn't get demonetized.
i literally had to look on another site for various educations videos on ww2 and nazi germany as several channels said translating speeches and the like caused community guideline strikes against their channels. i wound up on vimeo
@@im_cart8656 Huh, interesting. Maybe they changed them, but I still get recommended documentaries or shorter videos on those kind of subjects and they seem to be fine.
TH-cam doesn't "officially" tell creators this, but age-restricted videos absolutely perform worse on the platform compared to normal ones. It makes sense from TH-cam's standpoint, since age-restricted content = potentially not advertiser friendly content => if there's too much /the content is too prominent, TH-cam could lose sponsors.
Although this is true, anything that could slightly offend SJWs in any way will get a video demonetized and SJWs get offended by everything. Especially when it comes to education.
How did Egypt go from being the breadbasket of the Roman Empire to not having agricultural land to feed their population? Did something change the Nile?
Nile got dammed by Ethiopians (Wendover did a video about this), also the population of Roman Egypt was estimated at max 8 millions, not even 1% of today's Egypt population.
Back in 1980 Egypt's population was around 43 million, in 2022 it's 106 million! The country looks quite big on a map, but only a small stretch on the banks of the Nile river is habitable/can be used for agriculture.
I feel like there is one more part that is understated when it comes to the wheat situation, any area that has seen fighting that produces wheat may very well be destroyed, will not be in production for around a year after the war is over, and likely not at pre-war production levels. Meaning that wheat from Ukraine is most likely to be substantially lower for the foreseeable future - and this is not even mentioning any farmers who have died or injured and now cannot work said fields anymore.

@ Merkel wanted to bring Russia into the globalist system. She hoped that, once integrated, they could be forced to tow the line. Being heavily integrated with the west's financial system is exactly what allows USA, UK and other western countries to implement effective sanctions, but Putin is liberating Russia from the need to be involved with the west, thus taking back Russian sovereignty. Merkel didn't count on Putin implementing measures to increase Russia's self-sufficiency, even as Europe handed theirs over to Russia. Russia now produces most of what it needs domestically. What it doesn't produce domestically, it can get from friendly countries, like China and India. Just look at the Ruble - Yes, it took a hit when the sanctions were imposed, but it has almost fully recovered already to where it was before this round of sanctions in the few weeks that have passed since. Blocking SOME Russian banks from SWIFT (not the ones Europe needs to pay for Russia's biggest exports - oil and gas) is just leading to the development of alternative inter-bank messaging systems, such as the one China has developed. Russia even developed a small one of their own. Russia and China are quickly abandoning the western economic order, and as they do, sanctions do less and less damage to them. Other countries are increasingly following their lead. What next? After USA and the west abused their position as leaders of the global order, other countries are revolting and building a whole new one. The US/Western Empire is crumbling, and the Sino-Russian empire is rising.

"War is destructive. It is destructive to both the winner and the loser, and it sows the seeds for future conflict. The damage is not only to material things, but to the nature and character of entire nations of people who are traumatized. Humanity has not matured enough nor has grown in wisdom enough to recognize the absolute truth of this." A quote from *Life in the Universe* - a book by Marshall Vian Summers that you can read free online.

the NATO is not defensive, the USA, the NATO leader, started "defensive"wars all over the world the last decades in order to free those poor people, and killed thereby thousands. That they deeply want to see Russia fall, does not it better. When there is a fitting time, USA would just again switch everythign accordign to their own wishes and needs and start a war, while giving others the fault. Thats what they always do. Also, NATO was created by the USA in order to be able to fight Russia. Another reason why Russia does not like the fact that they come closer and closer. Check your facts and try to look at both sides next times
While I appreciate your confidence in a revitalized Bundeswehr, I seriously doubt it will work all that well, considering the difficulties with the procurement process. But I will admit that general opinion towards the Bundeswehr has changed in the last few weeks, which is surprising, considering I still remember the demonstration at our oath ceremony
His "third largest budget in the world" statement is misleading, as while Russia's budget is smaller, they can get more bang for their buck than Germany, as labor and resources are much cheaper in Russia. Germany's budget may be bigger, but it their army will be much more expensive.
@@matthewslentz5481 Russias army is absolute garbage as proven by how this invasion has gone, I suspect France even with less spending is already a pretty good match for Russia. Germany if they actually invest properly - and also invest no just in equipment but in more training exercises with the rest of NATO - will undoubtedly surpass Russia within the decade. Especially with how much Russian equipment is being wrecked and the fact Russia is about to default.
Bundeswehr is managed quite badly, from general decisions down to the indivudual soldier. I've heard from friends how much they got buried in (redundant) Paperwork and how inefficient many processes are. A lot of money will pay for some better equipment, but it won't make it the worlds third strongest army.
@@LordDeathNote Oh I'm not claiming that Russia would be able to defeat Germany in a conventional ground fight. Throughout history, the army of higher quality has consistently beaten the army of higher quantity. I'm simply saying that the German budget, while impressive on paper, in actuality won't make a significant difference on the balance of power in Europe. $100 billion dollars is significant, but European reliance on the United States for military defense will continue for the foreseeable future, even with the boost.
Just a pedantic side-note: Francis Fukuyama didn't "unilaterally declare the end of history." His thesis wasn't "Russia will never pose a threat again" or "major historical events will cease occurring from this point forward." He wasn't referring to that kind of history: the history of wars, conflict, and historical change. That sort of history will never come to an end. Fukuyama was referring instead to the historical progression toward an ultimate final form of government. In *The End of History and the Last Man* (which has to rate among the most misunderstood books ever written), Fukuyama considered the possibility that, with the death of the Soviet system, viable and legitimate alternatives to liberal democracy had effectively ceased to exist. He concluded that the only viable, legitimate form of government left was liberal democracy. He wasn't wrong about that. All dictators worth their salt at least pay lip service to democracy, or claim that their system is the *real* form of democracy. And for that reason (among many others), such regimes struggle with legitimacy. Other systems (communism and fascism) do not appear to work in practice and therefore are not viable (not to mention the legitimacy issues they suffer from). Liberal democracy remains the only system that can stake credible claims to legitimacy and long-term viability, ergo: we have arrived at an *apparent* end to a *very specific* sense of history. Fukuyama at no point claims that wars will stop happening after 1991.
Your video about anchorage was one of the reasons I applied to be an engineer here in anchorage (Alaska being my home) Really opened my eyes about the possibilities for work from all of this
6:15 "what I will now always refer to as the Cold War's first phase..." If you step back far enough you can argue that WW1 and WW2 are parts of one world war with a 20-year armistice in the middle, but while the line-ups of countries on both sides are roughly the same, there are such important differences in the conflicts that it makes more sense to treat them as related but distinct. Similarly, historians will probably give what will follow a new name. _Maybe_ the second cold war, or maybe something else.
Hell i can see in the future this will be just thought of as one giant world war. Technically WW1 still haunts us today as many modern conflicts are happening from border disputes drawn up at the end of WW1.
It's easy to speculate in the springtime. But when it's -20 degrees, I don't think it matters where the heat source comes from. Ideology is pointless when your taxpayers are froze.
WWI and WWII is the second thirty year war. The list of conflicts which occurred in the interwar years is staggering. Yhe Polish-Soviet war, to the French occupation of the Rhineland to the Sino-Japanese war. You can make a very long list of conflicts happening across the globe, and you'll see that it never stopped, just lowered in intensity from the highs in 1914-1918 (at least in Europe).

nuclear? really? as if Europe does not have enough "tactical targets" right now? Nuclear power is exceptionally efficient, however Nuclear power plants are tactical targets. imagine what if the whole of Europe would've relied on Nuclear power stations, and pissed off the wrong country? a single attack of tactical ballistic missile strikes on all European nuclear power plants would be DEVASTATING. not only with Europe lose its ability to produce electricity, it would also become almost completely uninhabitable due to something like that. then the problem with solar energy is that solar energy is not very efficient, and it is also only suitable for very specific regions of the world - dry deserts where it almost never rains and it is always sunny. Europe has none of that, and even Spain and Portugal which are the most "desertish" countries in Europe are not completely suitable to rely on solar energy. the problem with wind is, again it is not suitable for every region, and it is also not efficient enough to rely on, additionally the maintenance costs of wind turbines and the life expectancy of a wind turbine themselves are very costly. the problem with hydroelectric is also, it is not suitable for every region, while it is actually quite efficient you have to rely on natural water streams with a fast enough current for a good hydroelectric dam to be very efficient, and like i wrote above not every place in Europe is suitable for hydroelectric power. realistically the only REAL solution for Europe is to just produce or import natural gas themselves, in fact i don't see why wouldn't it be possible for Europe to create a Trans-Atlantic gas pipeline network from the US to Europe? after all the distance between France to England is negligible, and from England to Greenland is shorter than the distance from St. Petersburg to Germany with the Nordstream 1 pipeline, and the distance from Greenland to Canada is also not that far, and from Canada to the US a network of ground gas pipes wouldn't even be a problem. yeah it would be exceptionally expensive to create a pipeline like that, but once it is done, Europe does not need to rely on ANYONE but its actual allies for energy... additionally, if Russia and China do make a deal for gas supply, China would become Russia's biggest importer of natural gas by a huge margin over Europe, 750 million people vs 1.4 billion people is not even a fair comparison lol and don't forget that if Russia gets the deal with the Chinese, they could then use that deal to also create a pipeline to India and make a deal with them as well. so realistically, its more like 750 million vs 2.8 billion, so i think Russia will be fine lol

I note how you're referring to this as the continuation of the cold war, rather than the second cold war. I'm not saying you're wrong, you probably have better arguments than me, but I think it should be called the second cold war, just like the second world war was not a continuation of the first. While the belligerent is the same country (Russia), this was also true for WWII. But the government had completely changed, the reasons for the war had changed, the geographical boundaries have changed, there have been huge leaps in technology, and many countries have changed allegiances. Just like with WWI and WWII.
@@kp-legacy-5477 you're right, and this cold war is happening because of how the previous cold war ended. But the current consensus is that they were separate wars. But it might not be this way forever. My former history professor has argued that they could be seen as the one conflict, and when you zoom out and look at the broader geopolitical questions that went unanswered after the creation of the unified German state, that's how some future historians will see it. I don't agree, I think WWII had almost nothing to do with German unification. So RLL is not being insane here, it's a fair argument. I just don't agree.
Defeated enemy, nominal democratization, weak parliamentary government, then a slow rise to power of an autocratic ruler motivated by dominating and racially changing Eastern Europe, Western Allies that never saw the threat and capitulated in test invasions for fear of disrupting lucrative post-war financial ties, hideously optimistic assessments of military success followed by purges of the military officer class .... Call it what you will, the parallels are striking.
Let me remind you that American sanctions never been removed from Russia (and USSR) even after USSR collapsed. Instead, USA moved NATO to Russian boarders. So if you'd say it's a cold war 2, you have to find a moment when cold war 1 was finished. The thing is: it wasn't.

The phrasing of the OP makes it clear he does not care about men. "... more than 2.5 million Ukraine, mostly women and children, have been forced to flee to country ..." That's one way to look at it.
I guess if we still want gas we have to sacrifice even more money for better earthquake resistance. What have you done Putin?!
Can’t you make that EU issue? I would say since that gas will come as strategic for whole EU energy policy, there could be some kind of EU fund for such thing. 400 million people splitting the bill for damages to locals would have easier time than government of 17 million.

A while back they talked about a fire at a chemical refinery that happened near me, they showed stock footage of the downtown area of a city a few miles away.
I dispute that an earthquake of 3.6 is bad. But, then again, I live on the Pacific Rim where anything below a 5.0 is barely noteworthy.
@@michaelb1761 3.6 is a bit misleading. Because the kind of soil in Groningen makes it worse and the fact that the earthquakes are way more close to the surface than normal earthquakes. That combined makes it a lot worse than a normal earthquake of 3.6

@@kenbee1957 but the difficulty on declaring war in the modern day isn't caused because of the world's interlocking economies. Russia planned hundreds of millions in foreign currencies and used Europe's natural gas supply hostage. It was the political and easily-accessable media that led to the harsh response toward Russia
We’re still the same people who wage non stop wars over the last century, generally filled by ideological, emotional and power hungry reasons. I can’t see this ever changing and the west has only themselves to blame for believing that an autocrat like Putin, who is driven by pride, legacy and power, would ever accept its old sphere of influence failing and moving to Europe without a fight.
This has also completely succeded, as shown in the EU.

It's the same problem in Spain. Only France seems to have the right idea with nuclear plants, which is why electricity is so cheap there compared to the skyrocketing prices in the rest of Europe

What my real concern about all this is the neglect of the environment. As RealLifeLore said the immigrant crisis was never so high as right now but will increase into hundreds of millions in the climate crisis. There many and many people have to leave from all over the world and not just from one country... This will be the real challenge for the next decades.
So the decidement to increase the budget that much and to 'neglect' budget on environmental protection is very worrying. And i know the background, im a student of environmental protection and do my master thesis in germany right now...
@@TobiasDettinger if you are such an environment buff, start thinking about just how dumb and nonsensical so many of the green parties have been in politics over the past decade. The removal of nuclear energy in germany is what's directly caused their current predicament and the solution from those parties has always been...to exchange nuclear for fossil fuel based energy plants...nuclear may not be renewable, but it's way more efficient compared to renewables and fossil fuel, smart people would bet on nuclear as the intermediate between renewables and fossil fuel, rather than what's happening now. Environmental protection agencies have been blinded by their own idiocy and are directly linked to the looming energy crisis in this particular situation...good job, go fix it.

"War is destructive. It is destructive to both the winner and the loser, and it sows the seeds for future conflict. The damage is not only to material things, but to the nature and character of entire nations of people who are traumatized. Humanity has not matured enough nor has grown in wisdom enough to recognize the absolute truth of this."

they've declared war on freedom and their own people. we all know where this will lead to
the NATO is not defensive, the USA, the NATO leader, started "defensive"wars all over the world the last decades in order to free those poor people, and killed thereby thousands.
You do realize that the history of the whole world is wars and preparing for the next one
the world rarely changes it's just the people that change often.
Wars are part of our history it's always war happening before and war happening after just at some point later in the future.
Yeah, just throwing money at the problem hasn't worked during the last decade, so why should it work now?

6:15 "what I will now always refer to as the Cold War's first phase..."
If you step back far enough you can argue that WW1 and WW2 are parts of one world war with a 20-year armistice in the middle, but while the line-ups of countries on both sides are roughly the same, there are such important differences in the conflicts that it makes more sense to treat them as related but distinct.
I personally call the period between 1991 and now “the Thaw”

WWI and WWII is the second thirty year war. The list of conflicts which occurred in the interwar years is staggering. Yhe Polish-Soviet war, to the French occupation of the Rhineland to the Sino-Japanese war. I hope this forces countries to move rapidly towards other energy types such as nuclear, solar, wind and hydro.
Perhaps Germany could finally reverse it's stance against nuclear power.
nuclear? really?
as if Europe does not have enough "tactical targets" right now?
Petersburg to Germany with the Nordstream 1 pipeline, and the distance from Greenland to Canada is also not that far, and from Canada to the US a network of ground gas pipes wouldn't even be a problem.
yeah it would be exceptionally expensive to create a pipeline like that, but once it is done, Europe does not need to rely on ANYONE but its actual allies for energy...
additionally, if Russia and China do make a deal for gas supply, China would become Russia's biggest importer of natural gas by a huge margin over Europe, 750 million people vs 1.4 billion people is not even a fair comparison lol
and don't forget that if Russia gets the deal with the Chinese, they could then use that deal to also create a pipeline to India and make a deal with them as well.
so realistically, its more like 750 million vs 2.8 billion, so i think Russia will be fine lol

Sorry but WW2 literally happened because of ww1 and was a huge factor in everyone harbouring hatred for each other.
@@risulight The USA didn't move NATO to Russian Borders, the Russian border states moved NATO to them. And you'd think all the pictures of Clinton and Yeltsin laughing their asses off together is indictive that that Cold War was over.

Somewhat, yes
Wait until the germans sit in the dark and cold. They'll become restless soon enough. And nobody wants an unstable, unpredictable Germany. They might freeze obedient to their masters. Or they might revolt. And that would probably be bad for Europe.
Germans are supposed to be so smart. Why would they make themselves so dependent on a non-friendly and non-allied nation for it's oil? It could've just bought from the US. We have more oil and natural gas than we know what to do with, we could totally supply Europe with the stuff, Canada too as they have even more than we do.
Basically, North America is overflowing with the very stuff Europe needs so badly but instead of buying from us, their friends and allies, they buy from Russia? wtf

Men should be given the same opportunities as women to flee to safety. Why should have to die for women. I don't see women eager to die for men.
Germany: "Let me write this down so that nobody misunderstands anything. You want me to: build a massive army, move troops into Poland and fight Russia if necessary?"
Europe (nervously): "Yes..."
Germany: builds up its army again.
The West: YEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHH...... we hope
The German military is in a BAD state. Mostly dumb people go there, others choose medical services/paramedic (very helpful if you want to become a doctor) or other civil services. Our military equipment is mostly from the 80ies and very outdated. No one wants to join the army. We have no military pride culture like the US. We kinda lookdown on soldiers. It’s also very bureaucratic. I don’t have high hopes for our army 🤣🙈
@@BlondeQtie ye lmao. Who could forget the saga of AKK and the KSK? All the Neo-Nazis in there would need some serious flushing. Otherwise, more European sweating will be required when they get their hands on more munitions.
@@BlondeQtie you aren’t completely correct. Especially our military vehicles are actually cutting edge, the best on the market.
Our navy well…. It does what it’s supposed to which is anti piracy operations and patrols.
And the air force well… yeah it needs something new. Ideally a domestic design, otherwise the f 35 (although I‘d prefer a domestic design by far)
The paperwork really is the worst part
@@BlondeQtie I remember a NATO practice when the German soldiers used black painted sticks in place of guns 🤣🤣
Glad you're on top of this, keep up the great work especially covering on what's happening in Europe.
So glad I don't have to ingest the chaotic breadcrumbs on this subject handed to us over biased media.
Good job on putting it together for us so we can understand the big picture.
