Maybe Combat is overlooked because it was a "freebie"? In my house, it was the go-to game for one-on-one play and it stayed in rotation until we moved on from Atari.
I have played 90% of all 2600 games and Kaboom! played with Paddle controllers is it's single greatest game. It's literally the only game i could get my son to play for extended periods of times. Every other game he refused to play because of the simple graphics. NES games are the oldest games he'll play on his own without me.
Star Raiders. Best game ever. We would build a blanket fort space ship and my older brother would play and my younger brother and I would pretend we fixed the ship when we got damaged. Like when one of our blasters was damaged.
Bought Star Raiders at Zayre for $5. It came with the cartridge and another controller which you can activate the galactic map of where your enemies were located. Thought the game was very complicated to play because your enemies were all over, and they would damage your everything on your ship.
@@mikedavis1476 HAHA yah it was a lot of good times. My older brother had to be the pilot because at the time he was like 12 years old and I was 6 and my little brother 3 so we were relegated to the different areas of the ship. We had two living rooms so we would take all the cushions from the couch and then make a huge blanket ship. We would actually go to sleep in the ship. After we played Atari we would put on a movie, and my little brother and I would fall asleep pretty fast. Good times though. Graphics were OK for the time, but the "make believe" factor was amazing. Such good times.
@@arthurshink8825 Just watched the old ad. Hilarious! And they got The Tubes?! They were hot then. Nice that they credited the designer at the end. OK, breaking out the old Atari. Good thing it's Saturday.
I'd have Decathlon in my Top 10. Even thought it was a joystick busting game it was still a lot of fun. Even though the 400m and 1500m run were murder on your wrists and forearms
Great vid. I haven't seen some of these since I ditched my 2600 in about 1985. Hero is the only game I didn't know. That and Pitfall 2 were the only ones I didn't have including the honorable mentions. Missile Command, for some reason, I never cared for. Raiders of the lost Ark was definitely my favorite game.
My favorite Atari 2600 game has always been Mountain King. It has solid gameplay, but you also get the great music of In the Hall of the Mountain King through the different stages of play. I also like Strawberry Shortcake purely because the music is fun. I've recently been enjoying Berserk, which I never played as a kid.
For our 2600, we didn't have Ms. Pac-Man, but rather the "other one". We also had Asteroids, Space Invaders, Yars' Revenge, Missile Command, Kaboom! and Berzerk, as well as Combat, Centipede, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Maze Craze and Swordquest: Earthworld. I was slightly disappointed that the 2600 version of Missile Command only had the one missile base, as opposed to the three bases in the arcade version. BTW, we also had Custer's Revenge!
Pole Position should be on the list. Early racing game. There was also this game with a submarine where you shoot sea creatures and rescue divers. That was a lot of fun. Also, Fishing was a great game and is now a mini game in many modern Zelda games. I would certainly rank those above Yars revenge, hero, and Adventure
I had a 2600 as my first console too in the late 80s. Got it as a box lot with 20-odd games 😎 My favourites were Battlezone, Moon Patrol, Missile Command, Centipede, Demon Attack, Pole Position, River Raid, Keystone Kapers and Smurfs: Rescue in Gargamels Castle
Galaxian and Phoenix were great arcade ports. CBS Wizard of Wor was pretty great as well. In the modern era, AtariAge and Champ Games have re-defined Atari 2600 gaming. Champ offers arcade accurate ports of Wizard of Wor and Gorf, complete with voice (with AtariVox). Many others are offered, including Qix, and ports of Turbo and Ladybug that beat the ColecoVision. AtariAge offered a superb port of Star Castle and the early arcade game StarFire. Plus an entire catalog of newly-published games.
Combat. I still can laugh myself silly playing Combat. I also loved Cosmic Ark and Real Sports Baseball. Back in the 70s it was normal for a kid or family to only have a few games. It wasn't until the early 90s in my early 20s that i really built a huge collection. I still enjoy these top ten ....minus H.E.R.O.....no one had this back then that i ever knew.....and a handful of my own including Spider Fighter which is in MY top 5. Great video.
Besides Pitfall, Decathlon was our favorite. We flipped the joystick sheath so the flared part was on top so we could oscillate it faster. We loved Enduro too.
Adventure was my all-time favorite. Definitely loved River Raid. Frogs and Flies was hilarious and fun. Atlantis was a great game. Defender, Super Breakout, Air-Sea Battle, Barnstorming, Chopper Command, Warlords... I had 150+ Atari 2600 games at one time. I wish I still had those games and my Atari 2600. I'd probably still be playing them!
Unfortunately "fans" usually means exposure, because there are definitely superior but lesser known games or sequels sold during the latter years. Jr Pac Man, for example, is superior to Ms. Pac Man. Well, in my opinion, but see for yourself.
The adaptation of Wizard of Wor was up there; one of my top faves. I remember playing "Hero" and thinking it was super fun but ridiculously hard, but certainly deserving of the top 10. Adventure- what can I say. It was just fun. Most of the others on the list I would agree with. I'd almost add "Breakout" because, as simplistic as it was, it was one of those addicting games.
Maze Craze was my favorite two player Atari game. The whole screen is a maze and you both race to the exit. So simple I can't believe it never got upgraded to new consoles
#1 Kaboom (eye watering reflex test) #1 Missile Command (Gen x'ers were well aware of nuclear war and the targeting pixel in the game was sooooo smooth), #3 Space Invaders (probably closest to the arcade version), #4 Laser Blast (I'm still waiting for my medal Atari; what's the matter didn't my film pic turn out ok?) #5 Warlords (4-player reflex driven game, I was unstoppable), #6 Adventure (the original easter egg and speed run) #7 Defender (ultimate side scroller), #8 Yars revenge (close combat with long range attacks to finish), #9 Asteroids (classic representation of the arcade like space invaders), #10 Centipede (get those mushrooms in place and the insects were dead). Honorable mentions: Frogger (music), Donkey Kong (MARIO!, but no level three like on the ColecoVision) and Pitfall (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Combat (came with the 2600; crappy until you realized how cool some of the scenarios were).
Even to this day, whether it’s via a full stand up arcade experience or a handheld controller - I have spent countless hours playing Asteroids, and my longest play session will still be best counted by seconds of play!
Jungle Hunt, Keystone Kapers, Freeway, Combat, Dragon Fire, Fishing Derby, Cosmic Ark, Frogs and Flies, Galaxian, Fathom, SSSNake, etc. are among my favorite games on the Atari 2600.
What about Combat, Joust, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Atlantis, Missile Command, Chopper Command, Q bert, Steeplechase, Dragster, and one of my favorites Journey Escape (because of the midi music). I think a lot of these games are ranked by those who played them toward the end of the console's life. I grew up with the 2600 and only had coin op games to compare it to for years. One I remember, but can't remember the name of, was one where you commanded a spaceship and had to use a map to locate enemy ships. You would then warp to these locations to battle these ships. I know, vague, but I loved the strategy involved in those days.
I always loved the PvP games that I think came with the console, like the tanks, planes, and race cars that you could race on ice tracks and etc. I also liked plain old pong & basketball. Pitfall, Missile Command, Space Invaders, Beserk, Breakout and Night Driver were my main solo games that I remember. I also vaguely remember some Olympic and Skiing games, but those may have been on a friends Intelevision? I didn't care for Adventure, and Asteroids was a big disappointment, although I still played it plenty. I just wish the asteroids would have come in from all directions instead of just north and south.
Loved game Enduro. Was a race game, very rudimentary by today's standards, but was a lot of fun. Had fog and icy roads. My cousins and I would torment my little sister from time to time when she'd play, and whenever she'd crash we'd force a laugh. Fun thing was she would get so mad, the fake laughs quickly became more and more real, until we were laughing so hard we couldn't breathe. I remember one instance my cousin elbowed me while I was sitting with her on the couch reading, just as my sis started game. I was all, oh boy! This is going to be fun. We only did this 3 or 4 times, but when I recently brought up, my sis was all yeah real funny. Still annoyed even after 35+ years!
Berzerk was cool and Wizard of Wor and ofcourse River Raid, Demon Attack, Laser Gates, Threshold, and a game in which your space ship is in the middle of the screen and you go up and down to shoot things in various lanes and at times you need go into a lane to pick up an item, Frogger TreeeDeep II was fun and some more games i forget atm its been long time ago, i had like 36 games also mario bros i had and Death Match, Enduro, Atlantis, Bobby is going home, Mr Postman, Keystone Kapers, Commando, Astroids, pacman, space invaders, othello, missle command, Solaris, combat and outlaw , the rest i forget atm
Bump ‘n Jump was my favorite by far for the 2600….right up until my parent’s friend’s p.o.s kid who was my age (so I had to befriend him) intentionally wrecked the cartridge by repeatedly pulling it out and popping it in while the console was on. Never worked after that. Kid’s dad said-“no big deal, I will fix it and get it back to you”…..still waiting. That was probably 43 years ago.
I was born in 78' my friend, I've been gaming, and collecting a very long time. So while I appreciate what you've done here, where is that Frostbite game? Which I think is severely underrated, it's one of my personal favorites.
I had an Atari 2600 in the late 70s, with cartidges for Pitfall; Missile Command; Space Invaders; and Asteroids. When I started high school in the early 80s, I was too cool for video games... so I sold everything to my Mom's coworker. For $50. 😭
Defender is a huge oversight here. I personally also loved Circus Atari (way better than Kaboom), and the Supercharged game Communist Mutants from Outer Space totally rocked, also Combat was pretty awesome, people automatically dismissed that one because it was the council include, but great game.
The Atari 2600 library is incredibly deep, if you give it a chance (I didn't grow up with it, in fact my first console was the SNES, but in recent years I've become a huge 2600 fan). Among my most played games: Adventures of Tron, Gas Hog (similar to Moon Patrol, but I play this one a lot more), Laser Gates and Subterranea from Imagic (people always talk about Demon Attack, Cosmic Ark or Atlantis, but I much prefer these two), Vanguard, Jr. Pac Man, Q* Bert, the mighty Solaris, Bump'n Jump (incredible version), and of course Activision gems like Beamrider or Enduro. This console has so much to offer, and it's not even counting after-market releases (calling them homebrews does not seem appropriate, since many of them are made by professionals, like the new games by Audacity, former Activision developers)
I would have included Gorf (which covers Space Invaders in one of its stages), Demon Attack, and Wizard of Wor, but I guess a lot of this is nostalgia.
Atari 2600 I owned the most games out of any other gaming console I ever owned. I owned 103 Atari 2600 at one time. Closest second was PS3 with 75 games.
I also have my personal Top 10 here: th-cam.com/video/XVgKqaPD0K4/w-d-xo.html

AtariAge Cool place to get the list from.
I would have thought "Defender" would have gotten more love....
Defender is easily top five
@@USLethal At least Defender II(Stargate)
Yep ❤
I was blown away as a kid when Defender came to the arcades. So many buttons!! Just an unheard of amount of buttons for the time.
That and Joust!!!
Was always a big fan of Combat myself
Maybe Combat is overlooked because it was a "freebie"? In my house, it was the go-to game for one-on-one play and it stayed in rotation until we moved on from Atari.
ET was amazing. So well thought out and they really took their time designing it. Not rushed out at all.
I'm sure there were zero cartridges left of all the ones they manufactured.
Haha!!!
I, also, speak sarcasm.
River Raid was such a cool game! Set it up for Zaxxon..
Lot's of fun games, but no Defender? I came home with that game and played for nine hours virtually straight.
Stargate was much better but it came out much later when Atari was on the way out.
Fair enough with that list.
Haunted house is the only one I feel is missing from it.
Kinda surprised Pole Position missed the cut, but it's been years, maybe I got those rose tinted nostalgia goggles on.
This video brings back a lot of memories for me. Thank you for making it.
Keystone Kapers should be on this list.

Kaboom was and still is awesome... To this day no system has even come close to matching Atari paddle games.... Do much fun and accurate
I’d go with River Raid over Kaboom! but it’s close.
Subterranea deserves a mention as well.
@@Wallyworld30 Warlords 4 player is awesome if you like paddle Atari games.... Also homebrew Warlords remake called medieval mayhem is amazing.
