Roofing company tried to scam me!!!!

  • Be careful because not all construction companies are honest. Some companies try to take advantage of people. I had a roofing company try and charge me double what the going rate should have been to put on my standing seam roof. Good thing I know how much this work should cost because I have done it myself several times.

I have been watching your videos for quite some time. I am amazed how well you are able to direct and focus the camera, communicate the details in construction, the pros and cons of methods, materials and networking with the right suppliers and subs. You also provide us with with just the right amount of humor. I came to realize this today as you were doing this all while walking on a roof. But I guess this is not much different in elevation than foundation and basement work. I'm glad you had the chance to get this roof completed before another winter hits.

Sometimes estimates are high just because they don't want the job, but if you are willing to pay the exorbitant price, then it makes it worth it to them. My best friend brought me along for an estimate at a big chain buffet restaurant. The work needed was for health code violations. I've never stepped foot in that restaurant again!

I just had my electric service upgraded. I got 3 quotes between 5600.00-6300.00 and one that was more on point for close to 3500.00.
Many companies are abusing the “since the “C” materials have gone up”.
I priced materials needed for under 1000.00 and with my construction background would have supervised my adult sons while doing most of it had I not gotten the low bid from a reputable company.

I would have put radiant barrier fabric between the vertical and horizontal purlins.
You would be surprised how much heat is reflected. Down in the cold and skyward in the summer. Well worth it.
Considering your purlin configuration, it is the ideal application method. The fabric would be hidden, protected and very effective... you have an air space on both sides.

Contractor scamming - can't believe they would even do it to their own fellow trade colleagues, let alone to innocent clueless homeowners. Currently dealing with similar issue: new single home electrical job that costs approximately $20K and a local contractor quoting me $81K despite providing them detailed scope if work what to quote: openings, conduit, etc. I could barely contain myself to not insult them when I answered the phone after they tried to follow up with me twice but I chose not to engage since it was pointless and would not amount to anything good. How can we talk about respect in this situation? They spit in customers' face and then complain how bad all customers are. Needless to say, I obtained 5 more quotes and the one from the company being the longest of all in business provided best value. Thank you for exposing these parasites living in every community and urging people to always question stuff rather than accepting to be intimidated by the contractor and just pay.

Only used 29 galvalume panels (budget build) but I’m very pleased with the roof. I would have thought that you could have started on an end, then forced the panels to align with the roofing above using chalk lines, measuring, and eyeballing. The roofing machine should be able to do minor adjustments in the width of the panels if necessary, and you just need to keep it all straight.
Some of the roofing quotes I've seen are downright scary.

I guess I need to get out more often, and I am getting old, but it appears to me you did the lions share of the really hard work involved with your project, and it still cost you $10,500? I’m not familiar with that style of roofing, I would assume it started out as roll steel, and was formed on a machine, like they do continuous gutter? The first guy just sounded like he had a problem with integrity, or more correctly a lack there of. Once word gets around about that kind of business practice, your reputation usually proceeds you, and your opportunities eventually disappear. Everyone is due their just reward for doing a good job, but trying to make your season from just a few jobs can and will backfire on you, especially when the lean times come, and you suddenly find yourself looking for work that usually just fell in your lap. As a business owner at one point, we all experience that from time to time, especially when you get in our current political climate. People can’t spend money they don’t have, unless they follow the policies we’re governed under currently. You did a nice job, especially considering there was no mud involved! 👍👌😉 Hope you had your snow equipment ready yesterday, I would assume you needed it! 😊

Roofing companies, much like many scumbag concrete companies are some of the worst scammers ever because they KNOW they can charge whatever they want and most will just take out a loan and get it done. There is a reason the roofer down the street from me has a 3 acre front yard that has a landscaping bill every month more than my mortgage and drives a 2022 Bentley: Because he is a scumbag.
All his work trucks are brand new show trucks with show paint or custom wraps and he hires about 50 sales people per month filling their heads with dreams of easy money just so they will go out and knock on doors and maybe sell a roof or two to family before quitting. What trash

OMG, whats that metal a square? $150? 4 hour install for a 2-3 man crew? holy smokes, did they think you needed the entire lean two built as well or WTF? that's just ignorant, I know areas in seattle are charging ridiculous prices for work cuz there are no qualified people to keep up with the demand but holy fookin christmas thats unreal? they charged you over 4 times a reasonable amount depending on if it was material or just labor? FFS
also for a simple lean two why so complicated? plywood, weather sealant, on and on, we stand up a 2x6 and call it a day, 2 ft on centers.. what gives with all these layers so forth? even if its living space its a bit much, you ran perlins 2 different directions on top of plywood? WHY? you could have just ran it on the ply wood, 8 penny call it a day, 2 layers of air space really isn't worth the added work and material, it's just more to go wrong if something goes wrong?
good grief $10k for 10 squares of metal roofing?
its generally around $2.50 a SF, one SQUARE is $250.00? 10 squares is $2500.00? a few hunnerd for fastening supplies, maybe $500 for caps and corners yadda yadda, it's a 4 hour job or you aren't skilled enough to be up on the roof go flip burgers...
this is a $5k MAX job time and materials, warranty as well
bottom line is this contractor sent a few monkeys up there to do it in a half day, paid em $200 each maybe, then pockets $5000 AFTER TAXES... unreal . . . the dood that wanted to charge you $20k was going to pocket $15k for a small 4 hr job... too many crooks today, no one wants to work, they want to hire illegals that do scrub work, pathetic, they're pathetic, I worked construction all my life up and down, residential, freeway, commercial, I worked, I didn't look at anyone with 2 legs as an ATM to buy my next boat or put my kids thru college... just unreal . . .
they prolly installed the cheapest chynese metal they could find . . . why I do my own work, regardless, cars, motorbikes, music gear, whatever.. I don't get raped and I know its quality work and quality materials or parts...
glad you were on the up and up to punt that first bid, should be illegal

At present we do live in a free country. But if you listen to “old bone spur” Trump we won’t if he gets elected. He will be telling you how much rebar, not that he even knows what that is, to use when you are doing a job. When he says how much he admires Putin an Xi from China and how many people they control with a heavy hand do you want to live like they do and have your kids and grand kids be controlled by him. He wants to be a dictator and stay in office for years to come.

Not sure what "Induced" materials are. Was that wrtten by a 3 year old? I think they meant "Included". That aside it's kind of F&*ked up of you as a contractor yourself to call the other company's quote a "Scam". Seem s high to me for sure, that doesn't mean it's a scam. A scam would be if they came in, picked up a deposit and never showed back up, or didn't fulfill the terms of the contract. PLUS you're basing your pricing on work you had done years ago by "Side Job Bob" who is now residing in South America. (What charges did he flee from?). Just because you don't like the price, doesn't mean it's a scam. I'm in MD. I have a small service company, we charge $175.00 for the 1st hour and $32.50 a 1/4 hr after. My brother in law has a small roofing company. He charges a $350.00 minimum for repairs and they're getting about $450.00 a square for shingles on tear offs. Want to know how often we hear this crap from people who havent had hired anyone for a few years? Stuff costs more now.

    • @bondobuilt386
      @bondobuilt386  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Well I get your point but the scam was quoting the job for $1900 a square and then when I called them out saying they messed up and then changing the quote from 20K TO 16.5K Then I get a reputable contractor to do it for 10.5 K. That has nothing to do with my buddy who moved to South America. I didn't expect to get it done that cheap as I also helped him. And look at his work he was by no means a side job Bob. Watch the attached video of him working.
