I remember the first time I heard Jaco. I was in a chat room on AOL bragging about how Cliff Burton was the god of bass. This guy said "Man, haven't you heard of Jaco Pastorius or Victor Wooten?" That was the day I was introduced to Jazz and funk bass. That dude changed my life.
@bigbadbeethoven Jaco was my best friend in elementary school, and I was in his first band (1964). He would have LOVED to hear your comment, as 'groove' was crucial to him both in the music he made and the music he listened to. I say thank you for him.,
"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" was written by Joe Zawinul when he was in Cannonball's band, and it sounds like what you're supposed to say when you're faced with adversity: MERCY, MERCY, MERCY!!! Jaco's playing evokes a lot of positive emotions here, especially with the "Express Yourself" quotes etc. - so I would say that this piece feels very happy and positive. The original is much more "bluesy" but still positive, if that makes sense. Have a nice day! :)
Jaco music will always have a way of lifting the spirits, Relieve stress, and make you wanna go dance on the sidewalk with your headphones on---- the personality in his playing has never gotten old to me- truly one of the greats.
I don't care what anybody says, Jaco's playing on this date in November of 1986 is still some of his best shit. You can tell he was feelin good... but not TOO good if you know what I mean. He found an awesome groove on this and quite simply played his ass off.
tom blake He was pretty seriously mentally ill, and it's a tragedy that he probably could've been just fine if he would've sought appropriate treatment for his illness (and had quality psych treatment been even available in the States back then). Drug and alcohol addictions are rarely ever the problem, they're almost always a symptom of a bigger, less visible problem. You're an antagonistic asshole, I wonder what's wrong with you that creates that symptom?
Yeah, people vulture out on the downer stories and *assume* Jaco's playing couldn't have been good/great at the same time his life off the stand was a mess. Why? Billie Holiday still sang beautifully at the end of her troubled junkie life, one of many examples. Fact is aside from a literal handful of bad gigs (and btw I haven't heard of any out-and-out no-shows), Jaco played good on all his gigs and great on most of them.
Jaco always played as what he was: "the greatest bass player ever to grace us with his sound" This is filled with amazing work.... a master expressing true ideas on the bass" ..... Good Chance to hear Jaco on a fretted bass too!!
Fun hearing The Master jamming on this old standard. I'm assuming this is the bootleg recorded with Brian Melvin and Jon Davis. Would have been awesome to hear him play it with the guy who wrote the song, his old buddy from Weather Report, Joe Zawinul.
@Punch Down King I agree, but I think Zawinul was impressed deep down and that he felt threatend by Jaco's musicality so that he didn't want to show it. It hurts me that he called Liberty City "some typical high-school big-band bullshit"
This is excellent . Thank you ! Along with Jaco's musical knowledge, it takes some really strong fingers to play like that......for any extended time anyway.
I would *never* give Jaco a thumbs-down, but it's fair to say that this is not Jaco at his best, so I'm betting that some hyper-critical Jaco snobs felt they should downvote this just because it's not peak Jaco.
This is so damn awesome. That man is a phenomenal bass player. Was married to bass player for forty years so know a little bit about playing. OUTSTANDING!!!!!
This is from the album 'Curtain Call' and features Brian Melvins on drums and Jon Davis on Keyboard. Excellent album and 1 of the last live recordings of Jaco. Great album
Is it fair to assume that Jaco had the most impeccable sense of time and groove in music history? Cause I can't think of anyone else on his level, and I'm trying hard.
Fair point, I should've left it at 'Groove', which I stand behind. Maybe rhythm suits my point better than time. I'm a bass player, and you're right, any good bass player has pretty impeccable time.
It's Jaco up in San Francisco on Halloween night. He did a studio version of this song with Bob Weir form the Grateful Dead, were Bob sang the song. It's awesome. Of course, everything Jaco did was awesome, even when he was sick.
Here, his unique tone (especially attack touch), and aggressive phrases, are just amazing. What a delicate ideas on the rocking sound. It doesn't matter who invented something or not. Thanks for posting it.
i've always loved Cannonball Adderley's version of this Zawinul tune. I almost gave up on this one, but just as i was about to click off Jaco's solo came up. - the solo made it worth the wait. glad that i got to hear another obscure Jaco nugget that i might not have heard otherwise... if not for this video. :)
Not surprised Jaco is Jamming on this as fellow band mate Joe Zawinal wrote this tune while he was with Cannon Ball Adderly. Both folks that Jaco highly admired.
This version was used to highlight Jaco's playing. Also, the man held the groove throughout the entire piece which is the point of every musician. Groove like a bad ma'ama jamma! Grooves are not limited to a section of an instrument and a true musician utilizes every potential sound.
I agree with you if your looking for more people like Jaco check out his sons Felix and Julius they like their father are amazing.Julius is on drums and Felix on bass.RIP Jaco you live on through your sons.
His gift came with a price. Some say he had demons; some say he knew God, some say he was from another planet (I don't rule that out). He was extraordinary. Who are we to understand? I believe that such people as that actually exist, and that we will never know why.
Cool! Jay A was on drums in that band. Jay and Jaco were a great rhythm section. Later, I played in a group with Jay. He had lots of Jaco stories. Jaco practiced clarinet study books all day on the bus--on bass.
This is one of a very, very few TH-cam presentations of Jaco’s artistry that I have really enjoyed. Lots of excess as usual, but still something that would have made him smile.
Im pretty sure the people who disliked this thought it's an actual live footage. I understand, coz no one would dislike a great musician like jaco. And I mean, NO ONE!
Brian Melvin, drums; Jon Davis, keyboards. This is on a posthumous CD entitled, "Curtain Call", recorded at a small night club in San Francisco in late '86.
Take your master pluckers, artistic weavers,TASTEFUL studio cats, et al, AND Jaco puts it all together, right here ,in a one song Package: Mercy Jaco ,Respect and miss your Talent ....
there have been comments posted on other platforms that disparage Jaco as "Jaco & the Band" (Birdland, Weather Report) his bass playing was incredible. He and Joe were so tight.....I first heard Mercy, Mercy ,Mercy with Cannonball, Nat and Joe....No matter which way you flip it, when musicians are in the groove it is tight and respectful of the others. Just go Jaco+Toots...3 Views of a Secret (Jaco on pianp)and you'll see what it means when true musicians play with one another
Wonderful stuff!!! Good to know that so close the end he could still - given all his 'issues' up to then - play so fantastically. (My only gripe is that I could have done without having to sit through 5 minutes of adverts for crap before I could hear the music.)
Why blame a non-existent being for our own self-imposed suffering? For decades we've failed to evangelize great music and now we're reaping what we've sown.
thanks, i'm in mexico and unless you dont visit Ciudad the Mexico wich iis the capitol city you don't get rare material like this, unless you dig hard here in guadalajara
This one of the best, thanks to Zawinul's composition....still love Jaco's bass playing in Weather Report of Birdland....genius always lives and sometimes dies hard...
Jaco/Marcus Miller
Nah king was James jamerson
Cliff is great - but yeah...
In JACO We Trust!
yeah
@bigbadbeethoven Jaco was my best friend in elementary school, and I was in his first band (1964). He would have LOVED to hear your comment, as 'groove' was crucial to him both in the music he made and the music he listened to. I say thank you for him.,
So cool to come across an old friend of Jaco!!! Such a huge loss that he left us on 1987, but when I listen to his music I know he is still with us.
I LOVE YOU MAN!
YOU MEAN THE LAS OLAS BRASS BAND ?

Haven’t listened to Jaco in years. Forgot how awesome he is.
"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" was written by Joe Zawinul when he was in Cannonball's band, and it sounds like what you're supposed to say when you're faced with adversity: MERCY, MERCY, MERCY!!!

Always an excellent tune. Saw Weather Report about 1977 with both musical giants. And Wayne Shorter. Hall of Fame group.
Jaco music will always have a way of lifting the spirits,
Relieve stress, and make you wanna go dance on the sidewalk with your headphones on---- the personality in his playing has never gotten old to me- truly one of the greats.
oh yeah
The greatest on the bass. Really

Michael McCowin never care about what anyone else says about the music IMHO
Does anyone know, who he played with?
@tom blake just a high minded response, everyone, take note of Tommy Blakes!
tom blake He was pretty seriously mentally ill, and it's a tragedy that he probably could've been just fine if he would've sought appropriate treatment for his illness (and had quality psych treatment been even available in the States back then). @Punch Down King Agreed
@Punch Down King I agree, but I think Zawinul was impressed deep down and that he felt threatend by Jaco's musicality so that he didn't want to show it. It hurts me that he called Liberty City "some typical high-school big-band bullshit"
@Punch Down King It is a shame too because Jaco really liked Zawinul. He even began to wear a similar Kufi.
@Punch Down King,,, Somebody once pointed out to me that "there is no art without arrogance."
Enjoying hearing his bass "SCAT"... one of my favorite Jaco pieces here...
2:33 Holy mother of goodness gracious!
yep yep
I've heard a few recordings of Jaco playing Mercy, and he always does some nasty fill at that spot. :-)
Michael McCowin makes you smile every time too I bet.
Every time I hear this and read your comment it makes me happy.
4:18!
Some of the sweetest groove I've ever felt. Thanks for this.
Genius player, writer and innovator period
Just like Hendrix
Jaco, you was and you are the best! R.i.p god...
right on
This is excellent . Thank you !
Along with Jaco's musical knowledge, it takes some really strong fingers to play like that......for any extended time anyway.
I bet those who gave Jaco a thumbs-down didn't listen to the whole video or they would be on their knees to the musical master!
The doubters should come back and start in the middle and learn something!
Probably non-musicians. I started listening to Jaco in the early 70's. There was NEVER even a so-so performance.
I would *never* give Jaco a thumbs-down, but it's fair to say that this is not Jaco at his best, so I'm betting that some hyper-critical Jaco snobs felt they should downvote this just because it's not peak Jaco.
I WAS LISTENING TO THIS WITH A BIG SMILE ON MY FACE AND THEN 8:21 HAPPENED
Soo funky, it hurts ,there will be no better bassplayer than Jaco ever
How do you know? Because you can’t comprehend. You don’t if there is one already that isn’t famous.
Are you kidding? This is so Jaco. The phrasing and choice of notes alone screams JACO!
This is so damn awesome. That man is a phenomenal bass player. Was married to bass player for forty years so know a little bit about playing. OUTSTANDING!!!!!
...and he does the runs from "The dry cleaner from des Moines " Awesome; Jaco is God!
Damn! I wish he'd been around longer to make more music.
So needed this to un-strum some of the stresses of the day!!
It worked too...
let 'us' x
+TheRestfulwind let * us :-)
same shit right here one year after, greetings from Buenos Aires and sory my english sucks,
He didn't play this song he MURRRRdered it and it can never be played again!!!!!!!!! Awesome rendition of a classic.
Jaco was and always will be the greatest !!!
Jaco is Muhammad Ali
agree
This is from the album 'Curtain Call' and features Brian Melvins on drums and Jon Davis on Keyboard. Excellent album and 1 of the last live recordings of Jaco. Great album
At points it sounds like he's playing over another 'slap' bass. Do you know who/what that is?
pretty sure its just the Keyboardist...there's only Bass, drums and Keyboard on this album
no there is another bass, listen closely xd
Thank you!!!!
Gracias
Is it fair to assume that Jaco had the most impeccable sense of time and groove in music history? Cause I can't think of anyone else on his level, and I'm trying hard.
98% of the actual bassmen have this sens of time ! LOL crazy nerd !
Fair point, I should've left it at 'Groove', which I stand behind. Maybe rhythm suits my point better than time. I'm a bass player, and you're right, any good bass player has pretty impeccable time.
Some of Jacos best playing.....
no way
that happens to me every time I see a new video of jaco lol
It's a Joe Zawinul old tune... RIP genius
il migliore bassista del mondo
It's Jaco up in San Francisco on Halloween night.

just another KILLER Jaco track uploaded to youtube. Thank you!
yea nice clear recording thanks what a voice he pulled out of the bass
This was excellent. For me, nothing compares to his live cover of the Beatles' Dear Prudence. One of my all time favorite covers by anyone.
Uhhh yeahhh! Fantastic old music performed by great musicians!
jon davis is killing on this as well . brave cats jon and melvin to do gigs with jaco during this time .

Love this. I share a birthday and also my heart with Jaco. Love you bro.
I agree with you if your looking for more people like Jaco check out his sons Felix and Julius they like their father are amazing.Julius is on drums and Felix
on bass.RIP Jaco you live on through your sons.
Magic, extreme talent, all that excellent stuff, wham bam.
If an alien came to earth and wanted to learn what 'groove' is, I'm pretty sure I'd sit the alien down with some Jaco...
true
Aliens are Demons
His gift came with a price. Some say he had demons; some say he knew God, some say he was from another planet (I don't rule that out).
He was extraordinary. Who are we to understand? I believe that such people as that actually exist, and that we will never know why.
Some say stfu
Que maestro! El inconfundible toque de Jaco...
Thanks for uploading. I had this on an import album a long time ago. Good to hear it again.
God, this is Beautiful n' Groovy..
Cool! Jay A was on drums in that band. Jay and Jaco were a great rhythm section. Later, I played in a group with Jay. He had lots of Jaco stories. Jaco practiced clarinet study books all day on the bus--on bass.
Jaco emergiu sua virtude e sentimento às cordas para demonstras seu ponto de vista, e teve grande êxito.
Masterpiece from the Master!!!!!
God bless him... True talent gone far too soon.
PRICELESS.nice clear recording,thanx
Zawinal composition ,struck gold with Buckingham's
Totalmente increible, gracias por tanto JACO!
Brian Melvin, drums; Jon Davis, keyboards. This is on a posthumous CD entitled, "Curtain Call", recorded at a small night club in San Francisco in late '86.

Jaco! É pra agradecer e ouvir de joelhos... "Mervy, Mercy, Mercy"
Everybody tryin' to get that lick. That's funny. There will never be another Jaco. Don't bother.
there have been comments posted on other platforms that disparage Jaco as "Jaco & the Band" (Birdland, Weather Report) his bass playing was incredible. great bass work by an unforgettable legend. 2:34 is spectacular
ooooh yeah! ,) great stuff here. Man, am i old now or what1 t
Miss you John Francis
Whatever Jaco is lacking in clean bass tone on this recording he makes up for in the sheer spirit of his playing ability to always be himself.
My favorite tune by Jaco.
This song was composed by one of Jaco's longtime friends and bandmates Joe Zawinul, he can play it however he wants
th-cam.com/video/mPfoP3bq1z4/w-d-xo.html
Pastorius sensacional!
Something stupendous, the bass' tone......and other, of course.....
super dope!!!! in my mind......Jaco & Corey Henry on organ would be beyond amazing. Rest In Paradise Jaco!!
And Chris Dave on the drums..
RESPECT to a legend.
1:12 Charles Wright - Express Yourself.
Naw, ya just got a great ear for awesome music. Cheers mate!
Cool 4-step modulation leading into the refrain. I don't recall that from the original, but I guess Joe can do what he pleases with his own tune.
Why blame a non-existent being for our own self-imposed suffering? For decades we've failed to evangelize great music and now we're reaping what we've sown.
💓
@diagreen long live jaco. :)
