These are great for busy weeknights! You really can add anything to make it your own. The ingredient amounts (also in grams) are right in the description and the print recipe is linked there as well. As always, thanks for liking our recipes and videos and sharing our family table each week.
As you pulled those deli rolls out of the bag I wondered where is that recipe you talked about and then you go and give us an update. Can't wait to see that one. Those rolls are impossible to find outside of the tristate.
You say you don't make "healthy" food on this channel but actually you do. You make good food from scratch using real ingredients. That's definitely healthy, especially when compared to ultra processed foods you find elsewhere. Love the channel, keep up the great work!!
Amen. That's the trick. You can make very tasty and healthy food if you do it from scratch and avoid all the processed crap....even if you make what some might call "unhealthy" dishes....when you do it right, with natural ingredients....it's so much better for the body.
"Healthy" according to food magazines is making a regular meat stew then dumping a kilo of kale in there, completely destroying the flavor and watering down the sauce because... greens are good or something?
Yummmmmm. I always loved sloppy joes. Don’t laugh, made with manwich! As an adult I only want home made. Your Italian version looks amazing. I can’t find those rolls anywhere. Big thanks to The Sip and Feast Family for all the hard work!
True. "Healthy" should be about avoiding the toxic soup that is added to most foods for the convenience and profits of the manufacturer. Generations ago, people ate whatever they wanted and were skinny as a rail with no allergies or intolerances. Food was clean then.
I've been making sloppy joes recently, but instead of using a bun, I've been stuffing bell peppers with the sloppy joe mix. A great meal for low carb people!
I think your entire community of subscribers have always enjoyed your educational videos. BUT, more importantly, watching the "Taste Tester" grow into a respectable young Man is like...WOW! Time goes so fast now. You are a GREAT DAD & educator of something very important. Love this channel & I anticipate the next. TII
Former pro cook...always a good idea to do the prep first, even if it takes a little longer. Read the recipe a couple of times before you start. Enjoy your videos.
This is why I love this channel. The old staples that bring joy...simple and delicious. Then you make the more intense recipes that still bring joy for the family but with a little more steps and ingredients. Ma and I love Sloppy Joe's. She used to make it on some Fridays for fun food day. Another family member does not like them though so we have not made it in years. WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT!!!!!! I miss the taste, the messiness and family fun.😋
Actually, when making Joes for my kids, I found that hotdog buns are the perfect vehicle. The filling doesn't spill out so easily, but it still tastes the same. We always called them "sloppy dogs".
I'm 61 and we still eat homemade sloppy joes, my husband loves them. Now, I have to have mine with a drizzle of yellow mustard, a slice of American cheese and hamburger dills. Salty chips and a Cold Beer on the side. I'm there for it 😄 People really don't know how much they love them, they think of the stuff from a can. No. I once made 10 pounds of my recipe and took to our neighborhood pool party. They ate all of it 😄
Sloppy Joe’s always reminds me of Hemingway and Key West! I once visited his favorite bar there, and ate my first Sloppy Joe. Yum! The bar was founded by Joe Russel who became a good friend to Hemingway. His bar was called sloppy because of the floor always being wet from melting ice. Hemingway told Joe to change the name to Sloppy Joe’s Bar, and the favorite meat filled bun to a Sloppy Joe. That happened in the 1930’s.
Just discovered this channel via your chicken cutlets video. Love how you make these recipes feel accessible and low maintenance for a home cook. Great stuff.
Part of the fun is seeing a video every now and then and the taste tester keeps growing up. Yesterday I was missing my mom's sloppy joes and I'm going to dig out her recipe but I'm pretty sure the only difference is she used a little bit of mustard. It's great growing up in a family that cooks and eats together.
Looks perfect! Also, as a person who loves to cook, who also lives in a small town lacking access to houseware stores, I appreciate cooking channels with Amazon links to kitchen tools. I can at least see what you’re using. I can then shop around online and make an informed decision. I really appreciate your no nonsense approach to cooking at home. 👍👍 Thank you!
I just love watching your videos and listening to your presentations. You've got something special! Thank you for giving us your time on TH-cam once a week lately. Also, James is maturing so beautifully and has lots of confidence and the urge to offer his own ideas and opinions. Love your show. ❤ - Marilyn
Perfect back to school dinner!! And THANK YOU for calling out the people who push their ridiculously expensive spice blends 😅 My peasant self is capable of mixing spices that I already have together 😅
Back in the day they used to call this pan with straight up edges a sauteuse, they are quite versatile. Yes, love the sloppy Giuseppe, but both are tasty for sure. Thanks James, Jim and Tara, appreciate the class and the recipe!👍❤️
Thank you so much for mentioning Amazon. Personally, I love the convenience of Amazon because I’m turning 75 years and can no longer drive due to severe episodes of vertigo, in many cases, customers often end up paying more for items than they would from other retailers
My man can cook bro. I made this tonight exactly the same and it was absolutely delicious. That and I've made his recipe for butter and cherry tomato pasta and it goes just as hard. An easy, delicious meal for a good price. Thanks fella!
This is cool to have a way to homemake this, I will admit that I still use the can of sauce. When I make sloppy joes, I swap out half the ground beef for cooked lentils to make them healthier, and the size of the lentils and texture works well in this dish.
A proof box is the key to light and airy hard rolls. My mother owned a bakery in the late '70s. The hard rolls, sourdough rye, and cheesecake remain my gold-standards to this day. I use a thermostat controlled plant starter heat mat in a cooler with a pot of hot water.
Thank you so much, Jim! I begged my local baker for the secret and was told to use the cheapest all-purpose flour an extend the second rise by quite a bit. I also spray water on the rolls just before baking, I, too. Was lucky to grow up and get spoiled in the tri-state area.
Lol. A guy at a poker table in Vegas wanted me to guess what state he was from. And I said "Well you're wearing white sneakers with white athletic socks so it's either New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut."
i just made this recipe. will def make again with modifications.... eliminate vinegar, it overpowers. ketchup already has a lot of vinegar in it. At least the Trader Joes does. Chili pepper is a bit much too so i will use less. One of best sloppy joe recipes ive tried. Loaded with flavor.
🎯 I genuinely and greatly enjoyed this video, by reason of you explaining everything. I got much enjoyment and felt like we were talking face to face. 😀 great video, recipe looks delicious. Thank you for the effort you put into your work. 👍🏼
For the hard rolls, there's a trick I learned from Charlie Anderson in his "perfect cheesesteak rolls" video that might help you make your rolls less dense. All he does is cut way back on the salt, but the volume increase is really impressive.
That’s bc salt inhibits yeast. If you reduce the salt, it’s going to grow more and faster and puff up your bread more. Sugar feeds the yeast, salt inhibits growth. So it’s all about ratios and experimentation.
The Joe mix looks perfect, and I'm digging the OG & IT versions! The NYer in me is loving the roll on the Giuseppe version... I've been trying to explain them to some Florida friends. I actually took a video of me buying them out of the plexiglass bin at my local Queens deli, and they said there's nothing like that down there! Anyway, everything looks great as always, Jim!
The sauce you make for the sloppy joes is nearly identical to mine, which I’ve been making for 45 years, except I use less salt, use ground black pepper rather than crushed red pepper, and add a nice squeeze of French’s Mustard to the sauce (it adds that extra something that enhances the flavor of the joes). Sometimes I have a hankering for a smokier flavored version, so I add a scant 1/8 t. of Wright’s Liquid Smoke. Love your channel and all your videos!
Swap out 1/2 cup shredded carrots for some of the green pepper and add a tablespoon yellow mustard and you'll have my Granny's recipe. Add slaw and a pickle for a Southern Joe. Guess I'll be making some this week. Thanks for the memories. 🤗
Omg such a family favorite for me. We don’t add any chili powder or flakes. We always serve ours with deli American cheese and big slices of tomato!! Gotta have potato chips and pickles on the side! Need to make this soon!
Fun watch. Still one of my favorite. I had that ‘lunch lady’ sloppy Joe over 70 years ago. Going to try that Italian version. Do you remember the ‘lunch lady’s’ school house chile?
Growing up in Texas in the 70-80's, we rarely ever had Sloppy Joes. Chopped beef sandwiches were the norm. Not the same as the "chopped beef" from up North, Texas chopped beef is made from brisket. Sloppy Joes were a treat to us kids. Nowadays though, I pine for a good Texas chopped beef.

We had an actual lunchlady at my school with a big ol mole on her face 😮 and she was realky nice lol-- unlike the other ladies. We never had these at school though. My gramma used to make these with geeen peppers, mushrooms, onions and grated carrots. ❤
My version I use Texas Toast and dress it up with Garlic Butter and toast it. If I can't afford full pound of quality Ground Beef, I cook up some well cooked Steel Cut Oats made with Beef Bullion to add to the simmering Sloppy Joe Mix. I don't use much, and so long as I keep it down to a 1/3 of a cup no one notices. Also adding in some diced pickled Jalapenos brightens the mix, and a splash of Rum helps deepen the flavor and sweetness. A dash or three of a good Hot Sauce gives it an edge that most folks like. Every time I make them, the pan is wiped clean by a slice of bread.
Fond memories of the sloppy joe. A friend of ours as kids had a birthday party two years in a row in his basement. His mom served sloppy joes. Another friend vomited after eating his sloppy joe, right on the birthday cake. The next year, same result, but the birthday boy's mom kept the cake upstairs in case we had a repeat. Smart mom!

My favorite is your Sicilian Pizza, I've done it a number of times...it is always a hit, have potato salad in brine since yesterday for tomorrow, another great recipe. Thanks for all the great recipes you share and the ingredients at first.
Looks delicious 😋. That's pretty much my same recipe minus the peppers. Totally doing that next time👌. I mash my meat with small potato masher. Works perfect.
Thanks for this updated recipe. I’ve always hated sloppy joes, basically because in the 80’s, the party / cheap dinner go to was always nasty Manwich sauce. Looking forward to revisiting this one.

Another great video ! You always make it so simple that you give people the confidence that “yeah I think I could make that”
Looks absolutely delicious. My Grandma would always make these on Halloween and we would go over to their house after trick-or-treating. Yummy 💯🍔
my mother would always add kidney beans to stretch it since she had a lot of kids to feed. Love what you do and the Taste Tester is getting big!
I love kidney beans added - - but in that case we skipped the bun and called it “American chili!” I still love it.

For those who don’t eat meat, try with Morning Star Farms crumbles, very good. Your recipe looks like a must try, never thought of adding the garlic.
