I haven't brought as much books this year as I did last year. I did buy quite a bit of books from January to May. I only got two books this month (with another one coming from Book Depository) and the two books I got this month were The Gentlemen's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee and Heartstopper Volume 1 by Alice Oseman. I finished Heartstopper Volume 1 in an hour and I LOVED IT!!!! I'm only 87 pages into The Gentlemen's Guide and I'm liking so far. I appreciate you speaking up and going out of your way to educate yourself. It’s a really draining time to be black, honestly. It feels like everyone is pretending to realise we exist as if we haven’t been here all along, and it’s hard to tell who’s genuine in their support and who’s just scrambling to make a statement before they receive backlash. It’s also frustrating to see people only NOW waking up from being so ignorant and oblivious to everything that’s been going on for YEARS. I’m tired of being told to feel grateful that at least it’s finally happening. The bar is SO low.
White people shouldn’t be applauded for showing basic humanity. Although I guess it’s better late than never, I also hate that something had to happen for people to wake up to something that’s always been an issue and always been spoken about. The movement is only now getting the respect it deserves because of the white allies speaking up. The world is deaf to the sound of black voices, it seems.

Thriftbooks is American and can get pretty pricy for Canadians. Currency is in USD only and they don't offer free shipping to Canada so you can end up spending $10-15 CAD on one used book (and not always in great condition either). Unless it's hard to find, might as well buy it new book and support the author and local bookstore.

Hey Hailey! So glad you talked about what’s going on with Book Outlet. I heard some of the story but didn’t fully know about it until you talked about. About a month ago or two ago before I heard about this, I ordered from them for the first time but will now not be supporting them after hearing that. Thank you for informing and educating me!

A historical fiction book with a POC is A Big Dose Of Lucky by Marthe Jocelyn. If you count books that take place in the 60’s as historical fiction this one would work. It is by a Canadian author, takes place is Canada and I quite enjoyed it.

If you're wanting to read more about the period after WW 2 I recommend "The Aftermath" by Rhidian Brook. It isn't YA, and (sorry!) is focused on white characters, but it's such a good book! The setting is Germany, 1946 and is about how the people there had to deal with the war ending. It centers around a British woman whose husband is stationed in Germany by the military and the German man whose house they are assigned to live in. Honestly a 5 star read!! :)

For a historical fiction that isn't white, I recommend The Night Tiger. It doesn't really talk about any major historical event or anything but it takes place in 1930s colonial Malaysia. You learn a lot about Malaysian culture, superstition, and mythology and it also has magical realism

The fountains of silence is taken place in Spain. The girl is Spaniard and the guy is half Spaniard. GREAT HISTORICAL FICTION!
