🔵 Toyota's Forgotten Powertrain? The 3S-GTE is often overshadowed by Toyota's more well known, 2JZ engine. However, the 3S-GTE has a long list of motorsport credentials and is as tunable and reliable as the day is long. Is this ACTUALLY Toyota's best engine? Found in road cars like the Celica and MR2, it powered fun drives for car enthusiasts and daily drivers alike. In the motorsport realm, the 3S-GTE dominated the World Rally Championship and even won the likes of a All Japan Touring Car Championship (Super GT) under the hood of a Supra, beating the likes of the RB powered Nissan Skyline and flat six Porsche 911 Turbo. Join us as we talk about this incredible JDM powertrain.

I still have me a 3sgte powered celica . Catless downpipe and straight piped she sounds absolutely glorious❤.
Best AI video EVER. It only repeated the same info., FOUR times, turning a 2 minute 38 second video into 10:32.
Correction: the JGTC Supras DID NOT use the 3S-GTE they used a completely different engine called the 503E. The confusion stems from the fact that Toyota also called this engine the “3S-GE” most likely for marketing purposes.
The 503E was based on the 3S-GTE's architecture, so it wasn't completely different (though had a lot of changes made to it to take to racing)
There's a kid in Peshawar who uses 3S-GE BEAMS swapped 86 Corolla to race other drivers on the Motorway. Great Engine and Great Racer.
I had an ST205, a great car, very underrated
had no idea the castrol supra used a 4cyl engine instead of the 2jz , thank you for this enlightening video !
Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
This is why when someone talks about racing heritage of the Supra, the 2J is not part of it besides drag racing.
Have you seen this one? Smokey Nagata's 1995 Top Secret GT-300 Toyota Supra
@subbasslines yeah... ultra modded chassis and an RB26. At that point is far away from being an OG supra. He got arrested breaking the 200mph on that car.
What about the Denso Supra? Wonder if it did too.
I wouldn’t call you crazy, There’s a reason that I own several 3S powered vehicles. And have been tuning & modifying them since the very early 2000’s.
Thanks for the video and btw the 3S-G(t)E was not in the Supra, it was a 503E built for race use, TRD also had the 3S-G which is often confused to be a 503E.
the Castrol Supra used the 503E engine.
Back in that period Toyota tasked their engineers with making 2 complete usable engine concepts a year just to keep them sharp. most were never used as they were but many of their concepts made it to their production units. BTW, the 3S-GTE was the basis for the Eagle GTP IMSA racer's engine, that's were Toyota got the idea to eventually put it in their JGTC cars.
spent a lot of time under the 185 and 205 celicas, tuned a lot of 3s. Great engine
i have 3s ge...indestructable,at red line every day, in 9 years like new
Really underrated engines, no doubt. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
Awesome video. Knowing nothing about cars these help alot
Thanks for watching!
Toyota's four cylinders are the best ever made
They're very good, but I think Honda is the king of inline-4s.
503e race engine was used in Toms Castrol Supra (and many Toyota race cars). Only called 3S-GT by Toyota for marketing. No parts shared with 3S-GTE production engine.
Thanks for the comment! This is a great point of clarification. The TOM's Supra engine was in fact the 503e which was obviously a heavily modified version of the 3S engine. Still a legendary use of the smaller 4-cylinder that most people are unaware of. Appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!
@@EngineInnovator There were also the 661E and 171F Vairants. 661 was the rally version and the 171 was used in GT cars 503 was a 2.1 liter where the other were 2 litre
At last... what an engin..
I swapped a Celica ST202 with the gen4 3sgte engine( Yes, FWD). It is a super awesome engine! It had before the 3S-GE engine and it was also really good and should not be underestimated.
Project Binky haa a 3S GTE and the rest of a Celica 4WD system, stuffed into a classic mini body shell
Shame we did not get many options here in the us but back then everyone was looking at displacement over turbo charging why we got the is300 and not the is200
3S-GTE was also used in the Toyota Caldina in mid 2000s.
2JZ is great, but overrated.
3S-GTE is truly, proven perfection.
Thanks for watching!
Great content. More on Japanese cars, please!
Appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching!
I have the ST205.... great engine. alot better than the 2J
Castrol supra used trd 503e race engine, it’s not 3sgte, they just similar in some ways
It's still listed under the 3S family in most sources.
I like the 3S-GTE, but it doesn't make sense to use the Tom's Supra as an example. The Tom's car used a 3S-gt 503E engine, which is about as similar as a BEAMS 3S-GE is to the 3S-GTE found in the MR2. It isn't the same engine without a turbo. It's nearly a completely different engine that uses the same designator.
I have found a fully oem way to mount a 3sgte or any S series motor to rwd. R150 2wd v6 Tacoma transmission 22r pressure plate. Been my daily for years now in a mk2 supra
The jgtc gt400 class was limited to 400ish hp. So, no need for the 2jz. Why not go lighter hence the 4-cylinder.
I watched a documentary like 10 years ago and it said the 3sgte supra from jgtc had 600hp on the engine dyno
Yep, it made perfect sense. Thanks for watching!
I think you meant GT500
Thats not the engine they used, it was a 403E engine and there is very little info in that engine available online.
I mean the 2J as long as you do proper maintenance and don't overload the engine with power is nearly bulletproof the 3s can't put out the same amount of power but its reliability and its power output is a reliable enough to make it a legendary engin, if only Mitsubishi had done better quality control with the 4G 63 it would be the same level of status cuz I mean the 4G can get up to 900 horsepower before blowing up I mean like I said other than its quality control issues it's the dream engine for my own homemade formula 1 car. But because the 3s isn't as sought after it's still a relatively cheaper engine and it doesn't have as many upgrade components to make it even better from third-party companies like yeah I can get new injectors and a turbo manifold for it and a new exhaust system but I can't easily get performance camshafts and and rods Pistons I should be able to because well you know because I just need the appropriate size and I mean 600 horsepower is pretty nice for a high output especially for a turboed 4 cylinder
Nice clips and history breakdown.
Have you seen Top Secret and Jun's supras?
Thanks for the comment! I'm familiar with Smokey Nagata's GT-300. Another awesome car - 3S-GTE powered too! The JUN Supras still used the 2JZ correct? Thanks for watching!
@EngineInnovator Yeah, they are
World record for speed and track one sounds mental, Jun supra drift on TH-cam.
Im gonna assume someone already said it was the 503e not 3sgte.
The reason toyota used that engine is because it was already developed and proven vs all the money toyota would of had to spend in order to make the 2jz race worthy.
A better comparison for this video would of been the old ISMA corollas vs the wrc celica because they actually use the same engines as the jgtc supra without all of the confusion.
3S-GTE factory bottom end cant handle 2X factory power, 2JZ is happy with 3X +
I’m biased towards the 2UR GSE
Tom's Supra used a 503e, not a 3SGTE. It's a dedicated racing engine and not something from a production car.
Yes, you’re correct. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
Is that your real Voice lad ? its not AI is it? 😅
Haha! Yes, that's my real voice. I'm hopeful that people appreciate the voice overs. Much more work than AI - and a bit more nerve-wracking! Thanks for watching!
The GT4 shook up the Motorsport world? You mean as in cheating and being banned? i drove ang enjoyed the Gen 1 and Gen 3 MR2 but with and extra 800 pounds they paled in comparison to my 2ZZ-GE powered Lotus Elise. 7:23 you mean 'air to water'.
What’s racing if you’re not cheating…
i think that they didnt used 2jz cause it didnt porve itselft yet unlike 3s gte.
they used the 4 cylinder (503E) because the engine and transmission combo weighed less than a 2JZGTE engine alone. plus power was limited to 500hp so a 4 cylinder was enough..
@@uptownsamcv my bad lol i mistaken the engine. i thought the corolla had the same engine as the celica did xd.
feel like they also wanted has better weight distribution too. dispite the actual car having good ratio
The 4 cylinder design doesn’t have near as good balance. So I don’t believe you
Toyota used 3gste for the gt500 Supra so yes it’s good
The 2jzgte comes factory with forged pistons, so no the 3sgte is not a better engine.
The 3sge and 3sgte are very different engines, every part is different. It has a different block pistons rod crank, they're similar but not the same engine. In the video you make it seem like the biggest difference is that it's turbocharged.
Appreciate the feedback! I was under the impression that most of the components between the two could be pretty easily swapped. Turbocharging is obviously the most major difference that contributes to the power output differences so I was trying to highlight that. Thanks for making me aware of the further differences - I went ahead and removed the inaccurate statements. Thanks for watching!
GTE never moved beyond Gen 4 unless you are in the right hemisphere of the earth. You will be amazed if you build it with a single BEAMS head, ITBs off the blacktop and forced induction of your choice just off Toyota's own parts bin alone. It was the ultimate forced induction 4 banger before 4G63T with Mivec hit the scene.
@@K0Y0I_sis ITB advantages completely disappear in forced induction. This combination is made up in your head.
