Excellent! This song should have been released as a single!

The lyrics are about the feeling the band performing their live tours as when the concert starts, the band is shackled and raised before a shinning crowd, meaning they have a set to preform under the bright lights and screaming fans. The shadows are on your side, as soon as the lights go down, in darkest place you can find, you belong to the hands of the night, is in reference to the elation when the concert is done and the band can relax for a moment. The spinning a compass to choose your way is talking about all the things the band has to do even while on tour, like composing new music and interviews, etc. Basically, it's about the chaotic life on tour.
There is a book that the band Duran Duran wrote in the mid '80s called The Book of Words. It discusses the meaning of the lyrics of their first four albums. It is a precious gem I own. It has never been seen pictures of the band from when they got started through 1984.

A lot of this album's lyrics are about learning how to deal with world wide fame. Being one of the most popular bands at the time, but also feeling alone.

Man, two of my favorite albums back-to-back. First, from the debut Pet Shops Boys, and then Duran Duran's "Seven and the Ragged Tiger." This takes me right back to middle school era. Seriously I remember listening to both of these over and over, along with A-HA's "Hunting High and Low" and Depeche's "Black Celebration." The music on this song is incredible, the lush keyboards, the tight rhythm, the killer guitar. From the cover and the almost Eastern-sounding notes, I felt like I was on some James Bond adventure or something, some tour around the world. Love it!

To me this song talks about the huge fame they were experiencing at that period of their career achieved after the release of their previous album Rio.

I used to group this one in the same weak bucket as the final three tracks on side 1 until I found out that Simon wrote it about John and watched a TH-cam video of a fan playing John's bass line, which is complex and really interesting, especially in the chorus. It's actually one of the really great tracks on the record, but suffers from being too busy.

Great band. FINALLY getting its due in recent years. Future Past album is mature, sophisticated, and entertaining.

Many Duran Duran fans wish this song had been a single release. Would have been a radio hit.... I love the interplay between Nick Rhodes' synth and Andy Taylor's guitar. Always so good and complementary.

😄😄😄 Naturally Duran Duran songs aren't easily understood. This album is full of abstractions.. I'd say Sevens And the Ragged Tiger is a concept album..I struggled myself in the 80s to understand the lyrics, though i was a massive fan. Still am..

It sounds like a bad dream or nightmare. ..or something !

The demands were almost unbearable. They were feeling pressed by recording company demanding them more and more and more, plus, their uncontrollable audience, plus drugs, plus loneliness. They give up their personal lives for insanely work. This have exausted them. Fights were common and bad feelings started to emerge. Roger gave up everything and went farming. Andy left for other heavier projects.
You said about "vampires"... well it is almost this: "energy suckers". The record companies always wants to extract every drop of blood and MAKE LOTS OF MONEY. D2 boys´ lifes were being drained out of their bodies.
Other artist that passed this was George Michael fighting against Sony, who wanted Faith2. George didnt. He did wanted to evolve, not repeat and fill the executives´s asses more money.
That´s the strugle of the artist: Freedom and creative liberty X RECO Money making machine mentallity.

Great that you are not reacting to the typical radio hits like "save a prayer" or "Come undone"...!! Their best songs nobody knows about!
    I suggest:
    Lonely in your nightmare
    Last chance on the stairway
    The Chauffeur
    American Science
    Hold me

Totally agree, plus they've got some amazing artists featured on the album (Sting being my fav, luv that song, but you'll have to listen yourself to find out which 😈).
And the vids are also incredible. "Election Day" was very artsy-cool gothic, & of course a great tune (you'll love Simon's voice), but also the vid for their song "The Flame" - another great track (duh) - is hilarious; it's like a comedic "Rocky Horror Picture Show" (like how the vids for "Hungry Like The Wolf" & "Wild Boys" were similar to "Indiana Jones" & "Mad Max") w/ Nick cast as the mysterious & deadly host of a very fancy party, held at a spooky mansion, til the bumbling goofball Simon & his date shows up, only to find himself getting into all sorts of dangerous yet funny shenanigans, plus a brief surprise cameo from John, who at the time was doing the other side gig w/Andy: The Power Station; Roger may have only appeared in 1 of the vids (ED, I think).
He seemed to be stuck in b/w, but hopefully I'm wrong & he was happy, or at least fine w/doing parts in both bands vs feeling he couldn't say no.
He used to be so shy & quiet if being recorded, so I couldn't tell how he felt, so I'd only learn based on others claims (at least fr/what my 40+yrs-later brain remembers).
Anyway, you really should chk it out, regardless of reacting; it's just some of Simon, Nick & Roger's best wk.
Again, a reaction wld be awesome since you always both make me laugh & get so excited talking about Simon's vocals; esp when you pause/rewind & tell everyone: "You listen to this… "
I was a huge Simon-girl, whereas most or all girls I knew were JT Stans. But nothing beats the combo of those beautiful baby blues & his uniquely beautiful voice…

Just in case… But seriously, react or don't, however definitely chk it out, as well as the entire album. You won't be disappointed; this is The Promise I make to you that I think you'll agree with…
