Tried doing this by hand once for a customer, no where even close to the result i wanted. also have to say that 70% of his glass was stained. I guess I just have to buy a polisher to avoid this
I actually use a DA with meguiars m205 on a microfibre pad. Ive done it on a lot of old used cars I've detailed and it is easily the quickest and least effort way of getting this off for me. Yes it is a pain to remove. So for that i use Optimum no rinse. So i buff it off first with a dry microfibre. Then rub the residue off with a damp mitt soaked in ONR followed up by regular glass cleaner. Cleanest glass you'll get. If anyone has any suggestions why i shouldnt do this then let me know but ive not seen any negative results so far and takes so much pain out of it. Also great from removing failed glass sealants such as gtechnic g1. Thats how i found this technique. No glass polish was shifting it even with one of those glass pads on the da. So resorted to m205.
What is the cause for this glass scum/etching? I only use a winter washer fluid that can be as low as -60C. Sometimes I wash the car with car shampoo including on the windscreen. I applied a wax/polish on the winshield about 1 year ago and it makes water beading and slide easily but after a while it cause skipping on the wiper. I wipe it off with isopropanol 99% and the squeaking are gone but now I have this exact scum that cannot be removed with Isopropanol or even Brake Cleaner. I removed it using Stove Glass cleaner that has some powdery substant that I usually use for my kitchen.
These marks are really annoying when its raining and you notice the scum in between wiper sweeps. Thanks for showing a solution. I have used vinegar in the past and it seemed work!

You motivated me to work on cleaning my glass. Having previously cleaned. I found while in store at Tesco (uk). Barkeepers Friend Stain Remover £2.50 bottle of powder. Used a damp low pile microfibre cloth wrapped over a cork block. Worked brill. Residue was left so did a wash afterwards but thanks for the direction and principals of your results. Always a great help, Cheers
Glass is one of the hardest materials on a car, so I use GP Pro glass polishing compound using a special glass felt polishing pad attached to a rotary machine. It works wonders and gets rid of the water marks as well. Much quicker too.

Well Jon, I had always believed that glass polish was a wasted step. I lot of work for nothing, until I watched this video. I guess a good glass polish is now on my list of supplies to buy. Thanks for the video. I always learn something when I come here. 👍 Cheers!

I have recently moved from the desert to a piney woods area and I have been losing my mind and wallet on figuring out how to get rid of the “dew” stains or whatever it is on my car that parks outside!! No one understands what I’m saying and this morning was so bad! I couldn’t explain it the way you just did. It’s always when I first get in and as you drive it will go away BUT this morning I couldn’t drive it was so bad I had to pull over!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

This is exactly what I posted about on a detailing channel, the other day. Now I know what it is. I thought I messed up the glass using a cutting polish and an orange pad. It was actually just the polish flashing on the glass, and let me tell you, that stuff, would not come off. I had to get a real claybar, and not some synthetic bs. Real actual clay, to finally get it out. But I see this works, as well. 👌👌👌
I've been using the Meguiars Wash + to clean exterior glass for the past year or so. Similar results with extremely easy removal (rinse with water). I wasn't a fan of using on paint, so I needed some way to use it up. Ended up buying a few extra bottles, as a dedicated glass cleaner. I appreciate the videos a lot! Cheers, from the states, mate!
pantfoot, that does help actually I use megs plus on a a sponge sometimes on the glass during the wash and like I dont need to do a dedicated glass clean typically during a normal wash if I do that.. If you have it under control and dont have like a build up. megs+ will help it. but it wont rip off the real extreme crap like I had because. This needed a solvent based polish and some serious grunt.
You're absolutely right. I meant I use it more as a maintenance product to avoid that kind of buildup. Sorry that I wasn't more clear on that. For that kind of build up, I use a cerium oxide polish and a DA, then use Megs + to maintain for my clients.
Great video! Provided me with the inspiration to tackle the terrible visibility issue with my glass! I cleaned my glass earlier using Autoglym glass polish and a magic eraser sponge. I used Megs glass cleaner (liquid spray) first and it didn’t budge it one bit, but it obviously removed any dust and light contamination on the glass. I had to wet the eraser sponge first and squeeze out most of the water. This provided more lubrication when applying the polish (liberally) to the glass, it also prevented the sponge from sucking up the polish. With plenty of firm pressure and elbow grease, I could visibly see the staining marks being rubbed away. Circular motions seemed to be most effective on this attempt. It took plenty of effort and patience to shift it all. It certainly wasn’t a quick process. That may be due to the fact that I’ve never polished the glass in the 10 years of owning my car! I ended up using the same method on the inside of the windscreen with the same success. I placed a large sheet over the dashboard first though as the Autoglym glass polish is particularly dusty! I’m not sure how long the cleanliness will last, but with the prolonged hours of darkness on the way - I will likely make this a regular job, just to keep on top of it and make the task that little easier.
less detergents now when you wash the car and avoid using spray and rinse sealant products on the glass. also make sure you dont have your screen wash over concentrated. hope this helps.
Great advice, thank you. I was considering applying Angelwax H2GO but I’m on the fence with that one really. Like you say, maybe these sealants have the counter effect of leaving this bonded residue as they become less effective over time.
Annoyingly... I’ve just noticed that I didn’t do a good enough job and the staining is still there! It’s quite odd. I’ve just had another go on a section of the windscreen, this time using a dry magic sponge and Autoglym polish. The staining is still there! So annoying! 🤬
Thank you. I had this problem for weeks since getting my car back from the shop. I clay bared it today and it looks good as new. No wonder they call this (soap scumm). 😁😁👌👌👌👌👌
Thank you for this video. I believe on top of going to a car wash, the car wash people always treat the glass with rain x...that stuff I think should not be used.
Sonax has a nice hand polisher tool called the P-Ball, which imo works a lot better also for glass polishes than regular microfiber towels or blocks. It's a lot stiffer, fits perfectly into your hand/palm, and keeps the polish on the glass instead of "swallowing" it like microfiber does.
Thank you for uploading this one , my slk suffers from this and it does my head in. If its damp out or light drizzle the screen is very streaky almost misty but is caused by what you have shown in this video. I have some of the product you used but I stopped using due to the white dust it leaves. Now I will do it correctly...thanks :-)
Dad has a 2013 Nissan Altima. Drove my Mom an him to the airport at 4:30 am and though we were going to die, couldn't see anything. When that scum when the window gets wet and car light and street lights you can't see anything. I tried so many things to get it off. Bar keepers friend, magic eraser, glass stove top cleaner. Tried by hand then with a foam pad attached to a drill. Nothing worked. What finally worked for me was Meguair's Ultimate Compound and the foam pad attached to a drill. Small sections, couple passes and whatever was it was came off. Night and day difference. Not sure what this was, old rainx, scum, acid rain, whatever. Very happy it came off. It was dangerous to drive whenever the window got wet (rain, morning dew, etc). Now the are crystal clear. Had to do the front windshield and all door windows. The rear window was fine for some reason.
@@MickysAquariums 😁 ,, I find it magical to see how those detail products work on the first time try. And then I can't stop watching my beautiful Truck and take pictures😂.
Cheers Jon. Always wanted to know what could get this off. Problem is mine is on the inside of my windscreen (not sure how) so it's even more of a graft, I get knackered just thinking about doing it 😁
Very good video on deep cleaning the windows upon some research what you are trying to remove I believe its called as traffic film grime so deep nothing will get it off besides glass polish. I always wondered why during night drives I tend to notice them from lamppost lights as they reflect off the glass, especially on cold nights as you demist the glass just before it fully clears up they show up pretty well but as the front glass becomes warmer from the front demisters the traffic film becomes more opaque.
I suggest using one of the Sonax hand pad holder and 3-inch glass pads for the edges and then use your DA to polish that windscreen. Also check or replace those wiper blades, they are not helping to remove the grime.
Great vid. It’s probably a bit over kill but I normally do mine with rayon pads on polishers. I used carpro ceriglass for the first time a couple of weeks back. It did a great job of shifting some scratches the last owner had done.
Bar Keepers Friend seems to work for me. Cheap to buy (£3 or less) and easy to find on the high street. I didn't have much success with the AutoGlym Glass Polish, but maybe I didn't use as much elbow grease on application.
I do the bulk of the glass with a Raylon pad on a DA then just do the edges by hand. That way most of the glass polish has gazed up by the time I finish the edges so it’s straight into buffing it off.
Definitely use this polish do every window go back wipe off easy peasy lemon squeezy . Best one ive found much better than the autoglym fast glass i find that smears . I have also used clay bar on daughters Mini Cooper that worked but harder. Love your videos wish my garage looked like yours. 👍👍
I used Autoglym polar seal and got a bit of overspray on my windshield but cleaned it with glass cleaner afterwards. But still got that scummy haze similar to yours, that becomes very distracting when driving at night. Gonna try this, see if it helps. Thanks.
I had the same issue when using overconcentrated car shamppo (as a test) on my wheels. Soap residue won't come off. I will use a hand polish (Megs UC or similar) to try to get it off. Thanks for the tip.
Good workout you had there Jon! 😂 I've used Autoglym glass polish for years now and love it for this sort of stuff, especially for a crystal clear windscreen interior. I find applying it with a small cellulose sponge works best too.
I've had all sorts of crap on my windscreen and used ceriglass to get it clean again although it does change the way glass reacts with water/rain. I hate seeing patterns or rain spots when my wipers come on and this happens when the windscreen is anything but completely naked of any elements. Getting spray sealant like wet coat on the window makes water marks and wiper smearing terrible!
When i come across really baked on dirt in glass i wash, clay and grab a car pro ceriglass pad on a DA with some auto glym glass polish or other fine cutting compound. just start on speed 1 and go faster after speading it. mostly speed 2 of 3...but before you wipe the polish off i do 1 or 2 passes on speed 1 again
I prefer to use a polish over liquid cleaners anyway - I've always had better results, including fewer problems such as streaking and smearing. Other things to try are a clay bar or white vinegar. Vinegar is good where you have water spots in hard water areas (wouldn't advise using on paint, at least not neat).
Jon, I have encountered this exact problem with a friends extremely dirty windshield on the interior with this white film. The only thing that worked for me was ONR mixed at 1:16 (detail spray dilution) which I tried as my go-to products didnt even help. Directly before the ONR, I tried Angelwax Vision with no success then stepped up to 100% isopropyl alcohol which only lightly removed the haze with hard pressure on my waffle towel. Might be worth a try of ONR to see if you have the same result.
I am going to do a car pro ceriglass polish on all my glass tomorrow. Going to use the 3 inch rayon pads on my shinemate as the glass on my A3 was left ruined by previous owner. Finishing off with car pro flyby forte and a fresh set of wiper blades 😁. Just wondering would you recommend cleaning out the wiper fluid reservoir with a mild APC solution or mild vinegar in distilled water beforehand? Have no idea what may have been put in there over years 🙈🙈
I have used this AGP for years and love how well it cleans glass, and really rate it. But what really caught my eye was the transparent bucket on the shelf i have tried tracking them down for a while with no success, where can i get these please John?
Nice video as usual! I had the same issue with ALL of the glass on a car. I think it might have been caused by the wax chemicals from a touchless car wash. No doubt it's best done by hand as opposed to a polisher as you said you can get to the edges and corners much better. I wasn't able to get Autoglym so I used another product, a discontinued product that worked very well. I'm so glad that film mess is gone as it was driving me batty and it was a safety issue. Invisible Glass (Stoner products) does NOT recommend driving with a stripped windshield, they recommend you then coat it. What do you think? I don't understand that as I don't believe it's coated from the factory? If you would recommend a coating what would you use? Thank you!
Nice vid Jon l use the the gtechniq glass polish same stuff but it does work, l blame them Siloxane products like wet coat etc etc, when the weather picks up all my glass is a wee polish mate
Another great informative vid, thank you. I think glass polish is actually often forgotten about with its abrasive qualities, I certainly forgot to try this so good refresher. Would it remove the proper soiled in water marks also? I have some windows with bedded in water spots and was told to try cilit bang to remove, any recommendations?
Yes, 000 or 0000 is great. Be careful with some of the softer glass, like GM or Ford. Keep with 0000. But I want to make a point that when using any steel wool it leaves tiny bits of steel behind that can fly around and get on the paint and then instill scratches if agitated on the paint. Also worth noting is don’t use the towels on the paint that you contaminated with the steel wool. Personally I’d throw them away or treat them like you would a ceramic coating towel.
John Walters I use my air hose to blow the little steel bits away. Also don't use the steel wool pad if it got wet and rusted. Rusted steel wool will scratch the glass
I have the Auto Gleam glass cleaner and I did what you said and rubbed it into the screen in sections then buffed it off with a microfiber cloth. Trouble is, it made no difference, so I think I might try the clay bar see if that does the trick?
Been meaning to grab some glass polish, only thing that puts me off is the white residue. Personally I clay all the glass once per year followed by a scrub with 0000 steel wool soaked in water. Leaves the glass spotless and after some panel wipe it's prep'd ready for sealing.
the polish comes off nice brian. Only would avoid it if theres tons of chips. but otherwise its pretty cool mate. 6 quid in halfords at the minute. you can prolly use the pink windoleen polish as well to the same effect. clay I think will pull contminants Im not sure if its effective against the white stuff. Ill try it out though. be nice to be able to clay it off witha clay cloth that would be rapid.
Great video. Was incredibly annoyed when I bought some expensive glass cleaner just to have it leave this haze behind. I saw your other video using a flex cordless polisher to apply this glass polish and decided to use my DA and a 6inch fairly hard pad to do the same (High speed approx 6000 rpm). Did a great job of some bits but really messed up my front windshield where I think I over did it. Now seeing tracks on the windscreen where my DApolisher passed. Fancy posting a video on polishing with ceriglass and a rayon pad? Haha 😂
Can recommend a combination of Zaino Glass Polish and Carpro glass pad - great results with very little effort. I'm still wondering what the streaky white stuff actually consists of? Have considered it could be a thin oily film coming from exhaust from other cars?
I usually just use Megs M205 with a polishing pad and polisher and it removes everything. Do you think there’s any real advantage to a glass specific polish vs any normal polish?
I think the glass polish uses a bit softer of an abrasive as not to scratch the glass. I have seen people polished glass and left bad swirl marks. M205 is likely good, I was going to suggest it as well. I do like to follow up with a water repellent like Aquapel or Rain-X though they do add their own set of issues.
I wish I had looked at your post and advice before I ripped at my glass with blue rules polish and blue pad- swirly glass all over now which surprised me as others had said glass so hard it wouldn't mark with compound - defo does. Ideas to remove swirls? GP pro someone said?
Hi Jon, another great vid, thanks for the upload. Quick question, what method would you use for swirls and wiper marks/scratches on the windscreen? I’ve heard of mixing glass polish with a pumice cleaner but was wondering if you’ve tried it? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
I'm curious also on how to polish off scratch marks on glass. From what I've seen you can machine polish it but the pads and possibly polish is different compared to polishing paint
@@zaink7037 Ok, here's what it takes in my experience: You need to buy diamond polish and glass polishing pads and work it. If it's a small scratch like on a smartphone or a mineral crystal watch face you can use a dremel with the wool polishing pads and work it. Search Amazon US for "TEMO 3pc 5 gram Diamond Polishing Lapping Paste Compound Finishing Set 0.5, 1.0, 3.5 Micron" I have successfully polished scratches even out of sapphire watch crystals but it takes time and patients.
Do you think that Glass Polish would remove a fine scratch in the glass ?. I had a new windscreen fitted back in about September last yr. Literally a few days after I was going down the M4 in the pouring rain and a car in front kicked up a alloy coke can. It hit my window and went under the wiper blade. Consequently the can made about 15 passes over the glass before I got to the hard shoulder. Luckily it didn't smash the window. But now I have a fine line in the wiper path. You can just about feel it with your fingernail. You would have thought Alloy would be softer than Glass. But it still marked it!.
I'm having rather a lot of trouble with this and getting a perfectly clean bit of glass. I'm using a microfibre rectangle applicator from rag company but it doesn't give me enough pressure or bite, its too soft. Are those hex pads more dense so I can rub the polish in harder (and where do you get yours from)? The glass polish removes some but there are some areas that seem to have that scum left on it.
I've heard of "widowmaker" snow and now, widowmaker glass! I would have used my DA with a glass polish and a glass polishing pad as a last resort. First I would have tried a magic eraser (melamine sponge) and if that didn't work, 0000 steel wool. Adams brilliant glaze is said to help remove that too. They have some videos up showing it.
A always thought that white greasy film was mainly form the grit used on our roads. On trip on a motorway when it's cold, you get covered with this gunk. And it just streeks around and shows when it rains. If it raimkg heave you don't see it much, but light rain is a bitch. Good tip thought. I've never considered a glass polish. I usally upset use a household window spary. I current have the pound land stuff. I may get some polish for the easter clean. All the roads are usally clean by then.

I have some of the product you used but I stopped using due to the white dust it leaves.
Now I will do it correctly...thanks :-)
Ceriglass and a Flexipads rayon pad on the rotary does the job for me👍
Thank you so much I’ve been trying to find a solution for this issue for months!!!
I should never hav sub'd! You are making me want to clean my car and buy stuff! 😂😂
Great videos, really enjoying them.
It's addictive 🤦🏼♀️
@@projet2907 I spend the day cleaning may car......with the new products I got this morning 😁. Enjoyed every minute of it.
Great tip - thanks. I’ve had some of the Auto Glym stuff for years but never really tried it 👍
Great video! Was trying to figure out this issue for weeks. Glass polish worked a treat...
Had a go at this two weeks ago with a clay bar and got it all pretty easy. Depends on how bad it is I guess.
I use the machine polisher with the Last Cut. I also polish the windshield and back window every time I do the car
Just goes to show all these products on the market today, good old Autoglym saves the day , great video
wonder what is in it from back in the day lol
I’ve got this on my windscreen and it’s driving me insane. I’ve bought the AutoGlym glass polish so will spend a a bit of time scrubbing this off
Jon, I use the same polish but have also had to clay the window on a poorly maintained windscreen to get it clean
Thanks.
Sonax glaspolish on a microfiber cutting pad is also very effective!
Very much like youre video’s keep up the good work!
9:11 UH UH UH :) Sounds like your car needs servicing! It didn't start :P
Thanks alot for this video this has helped me so much to get this off my glass.
I had the same issue when using overconcentrated car shamppo (as a test) on my wheels. Soap residue won't come off. I will use a hand polish (Megs UC or similar) to try to get it off. Thanks for the tip.
Nice video. I’m going to try this out. I have some nasty, white film on my windshield and I can’t get it cleaned off.
Good workout you had there Jon! 😂 I've used Autoglym glass polish for years now and love it for this sort of stuff, especially for a crystal clear windscreen interior. I find applying it with a small cellulose sponge works best too.
Tr carpro ceriglass. Designed for this very reason. If it’s really bad use it with a rayon pad Jon. Hope your well
Thank you, I will try this and come back with the result.
Need to do the roof light on our extension, though have heard it can be used with a non scratch sponge too to good effect too
Jon, I have encountered this exact problem with a friends extremely dirty windshield on the interior with this white film. Might be worth a try of ONR to see if you have the same result.
what product did you use?
Interesting as ONR is the mildest of the products you used.
FINALLY! 😂🤣 I cured mine with a clay bar, IPA withdown, Poorboy's Professional Polish followed by Autoglym Glass Polish. :)
Have no idea what may have been put in there over years 🙈🙈
I have CeriGlass and this problem and I was hesitant to work it, how did your Job go?
My new window is covered in this. I had some glass polish too! Get some more
I have used this AGP for years and love how well it cleans glass, and really rate it.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the video !
Wish I knew this with the previous car. Rear window was full of that stuff
Good product. Nextzett also has a very very good product for that then you apply their selant and the glass looks amazing and water repelent.
0000 steel wool also works well to get that stuff off
Yes, 000 or 0000 is great.
Trouble is, it made no difference, so I think I might try the clay bar see if that does the trick?
try a product called soft99 glaco compound. that will strip every thing by hand. once stripped put glace ultra glass sealant on.
@@ForensicDetailing does the polish residue not go everywhere when buffing?
The glass on every rental car I've ever driven looks like that. It's so annoying.
Try Bilt Hamber regular clay as a comparison. I use it on my shower glass to good effect.
Calcium Lime and Rust works great!
Normal pink bottle windoline, rub in in, let it set, polish off. Will shift any crud/hard water stains etc
I bet that would work, same sort of principle
Thank you so much man! OMY I bought a used car and it was just not drivable at night. Thanks!
You can also use this with a DA and a Rayon pad.
Fantastic. That's a workout! RainX leaves those streaks too
Literally squeaky clean haha!! Thanks for this always wondered how to get this scummy stuff off tried all sorts!
GP pro someone said?
paul smith You’re saying you scratched your glass? Just use a finer polish and finer pad. You should be able to bring it back, no problems.
roguegeek thanks rogue but I have tried yellow / yellow rupes combo but not removing it. I will try again later, maybe buy some glass polish.
That was literally like watching polish dry!
Only joking, great advice as usual, would a clay mit not get rid of most of that?
This is the sort of film I have on the inside of the screen ( discussed in a previous topic) I wonder if this can be used on the inside as well?
Hi Jon, another great vid, thanks for the upload. Quick question, what method would you use for swirls and wiper marks/scratches on the windscreen? I’ve heard of mixing glass polish with a pumice cleaner but was wondering if you’ve tried it?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
There's a video on here, where some guys in the States do this and get REALLY good results.
Lots of time and effort though even when using a machine.
I think it also partly due to synthetic oils floating about in the air on motorways etc. Not even standard thinners will move some of this stuff.
I clay bar mine then use that same polish about once every four washes. I do a lot of miles and my windscreen get covered in rubbish.
But it still marked it!.
dont think it will paul sorry
I'm having rather a lot of trouble with this and getting a perfectly clean bit of glass. I'm using a microfibre rectangle applicator from rag company but it doesn't give me enough pressure or bite, its too soft. Are those hex pads more dense so I can rub the polish in harder (and where do you get yours from)? The glass polish removes some but there are some areas that seem to have that scum left on it.
I got this same crap on my windscreen, no wonder vision wasn't touching it!
atlast found what i needed thanks
I have this as part of my polishing kit, however do you think it's necessary to use the machine on it or there's no big difference in finish?
I've heard of "widowmaker" snow and now, widowmaker glass! I would have used my DA with a glass polish and a glass polishing pad as a last resort. First I would have tried a magic eraser (melamine sponge) and if that didn't work, 0000 steel wool. Adams brilliant glaze is said to help remove that too. They have some videos up showing it.
I use this with a rotary/abrasive foam pad
A always thought that white greasy film was mainly form the grit used on our roads. On trip on a motorway when it's cold, you get covered with this gunk. And it just streeks around and shows when it rains. If it raimkg heave you don't see it much, but light rain is a bitch.
Good tip thought. I've never considered a glass polish. I usally upset use a household window spary. I current have the pound land stuff. I may get some polish for the easter clean. All the roads are usally clean by then.
You, sir, are my hero. Thank you and subbed.
