Brilliant film, as with all the Billy Wilder films. When i first saw it on tv when I was a kid I thought it was the hardest hitting film ild ever seen but now it seems more like a parable about modern celebrity or journalism. Just noticed the secretary at the paper was the maid in Rope. Kirk was a proper film star, no-one to compare currently. Great choice 👍👍👍

The guy who seemed familiar at the beginning was also in MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET.
There are echoes of this film in ASTEROID CITY.

Thank you for watching this film. I've never seen it and would not have watched in my own because i am not a Kirk Douglas fan. But this is a very good film.

Thanks for being the first person on TH-cam to react to Ace in the Hole. I doubt there will ever be a second one. This is one of my favorite movies. This movie was ahead of its time even now, 74 years after it was filmed. It's also one of Spike Lee's favorite movies. He got Billy Wilder and Kirk Douglas to autograph his poster: th-cam.com/video/nynhVZzU1W8/w-d-xo.html
You said that people didn't have the internet back then, and that's why so many people were interested. But if a guy was trapped in a similar situation in 2024, it would get a lot of media coverage and big ratings (but probably no carnival, though). As Tatum said, a story is bigger if involves one person rather than a lot of
If a few of the characters seem recognizable, here's why:
Porter Hall, who played the Albuquerque Sun-Bulletin newspaper publisher, was the same guy in the back of the train in Double Indemnity. (His real-life wife is in the movie, too, as the wife of the insurance salesman).
Richard Gaines, who played the New York newspaper publisher, was in Double Indemnity, too, as the insurance company boss. Fun fact: Gaines' first wife went on to marry William Holden, star of Wilder's previous movie Sunset Boulevard and next movie Stalag 17.

I hope you enjoyed the reaction! 😊
Nowadays there are so many available news that any incident similar to this would probably be overwhelmed and forgotten.
Oh yes, that's where I remembered Porter Hall from; Double Indemnity.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and the fun fact 😉

Some of my other favorite Kirk Douglas films: Paths of Glory, Spartacus, Lonely Are The Brave, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, The Bad and The Beautiful, Young Man with A Horn, The Bad and The Beautiful, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea,

Another hard-core film. WOW. I avoided this for a long time - 10 years - and Criterion delivered their copy and we watched it. I am NOT a Kirk Douglas fan. If Kirk's in a film, I won't watch it - that's my general rule of thumb. Kinda like Nicholson. But Kirk's in some outstanding films - SEVEN DAYS IN MAY is my favorite Kirk film, but Kirk's a good guy in that film. THE BAD & THE BEAUTIFUL - that's a hard film, Kirk is not a nice guy. But a strong film.

Porter Hall (the small town newspaper editor) was the eye-brow twitcher in 1947's MIRACLE ON 34th STREET and dozens of others. A perennial supporting actor, sometimes weasily.

I haven't watched those two movies, so I'll add them to my list 😊.
I think I remembered Porter Hall from DOUBLE INDEMNITY.

@@henryellow DOUBLE INDEMNITY will bring you into Fred MacMurray time. He is NOT a heralded actor and was far more famous in America due to his '60s TV show where he's 'inherited' three lads for child raising. Along with a older uncle in tow: MY THREE SONS. But Fred's-a-bad-guy is just TOUGH to swallow. He tries, though, and 1954's PUSHOVER has him as a corruptible cop staking out beautiful Kim Novak, waiting for her criminal boyfriend to show up. "Why don't you and I ditch him and we'll run off with the loot." If ONLY Fred's boss hadn't been watching, too - !
