Lovely film. Great choice of Witness for the Prosecution next 👍👍👍. The Larrabee secretary was a customer at the building and Loan in Its a Wonderful Life and the hotel manager in Vertigo. Only so many character actors to go around…
I first saw her as Grandma in "The Waltons". She has a sweet role as one of Mama's sisters in "I Remember Mama".
One of the servants is Nancy Kulp, who was Miss Hathaway in "The Beverly Hillbillies".
Oh those wonderful character actors who support the leads and so often are responsible for making a movie as great as it is!
This is a really good movie. I also enjoy The African Queen with Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.

The newer remake has all the charm, too. Both are worth watching and in our festivals, they were equally attended - hopefully by the same core audience.
I'd heard that the reason Audrey Hepburn was so thin was due to her family being in the Dutch famine during WWII, just as she was igoing through adolescence, when we usually grow in spurts. She was malnourished and jaundiced during this period, and after adolescence, when her body was past its natural period of producing so many growth homones, she was permanentently stunted. Also, she was a ballet student, where maintaining a svelt form is desireable. Thus, she became famous for her ultra-trim waist and poise.

Casting Notes Fact: Nancy Kulp, who plays the uncredited maid Jenny, is best known as Jane Hathaway from The Beverly Hillbillies (1962).
Location Location Fact: The location used to portray the Larrabee family's mansion in Glen Cove, New York, was Hill Grove, the home of George Lewis in Beverly Hills, California. This mansion was later demolished during the 1960s.
Onset Tension Fact: Humphrey Bogart and William Holden couldn't stand each other. Bogart disapproved of Audrey Hepburn (he wanted his wife Lauren Bacall in the role), while Holden fell in love with her. Asked how he liked working with Hepburn, Bogart replied: "It's okay, if you don't mind to make a dozen takes."
Epic Wardrobe Fact: Audrey Hepburn originally wanted famed couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga to design her costumes, but he turned her down. She then asked Hubert de Givenchy, Balenciaga's lesser known protegé. Hubert de Givenchy originally thought he would be providing wardrobe for Katharine Hepburn, as he had never heard of Audrey Hepburn before they were introduced. Because of her costumes' high price, Paramount insisted that Audrey Hepburn pay for them herself as part of her personal wardrobe. The film began a lifelong association between costume designer Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn.
Ellen Corby, who played a secretary, was the desk clerk in _Vertigo,_ a Building & Loan customer in _It's a Wonderful Life,_ and, later, Grandma Walton in _The Waltons._
It would be interesting to see a version of this with the 19-year-old Lauren Bacall. If I go to Heaven, I'll get to watch all the never-made films I want. :) Audrey Hepburn is lovely in this, though.
Bogart and Holden didn't like each other? I wonder why. I think Bogart was a little sore with Hepburn because his wife didn't get the role.
Hepburn's dress at the dance was very beautiful. It was worth it even if she had to pay out of her own pocket.

@@henryellow Much as I love Lauren Bacall, I can understand why Wilder wouldn't want her as Sabrina: Bacall has always had a kind steel and wisdom to her that wouldn't work for the character of Sabrina. I may be wrong, but I think that the cancer which would soon kill him may have been already apparent here, and if so, that may have consciously or subconsciously contributed to his unusually negative attitude.
I always liked Nancy Kulp! (I grew up watching "Beverly Hillbillies" and the other "rural shows" on CBS). She was once called the ugliest woman in Hollywood, which I think is unfair and untrue. Of course, on that show, the pretty girl was Donna Douglas, who is unfair competition for almost anyone, but Kulp had a fun, vaguely sophisticated self knowledge that played perfectly for her.

This is nice, but the really quintessential Audrey Hepburn films that everyone should watch are "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Roman Holiday". When it comes to Bogart films, the list of good ones is loooong. Of course, everyone has already seen "Casablanca", so I recommend at least "To Have and Have Not", "Big Sleep", "Maltese Falcon", and "African Queen".

Cary Grant was the initial choice for the role of Linus Larabee, in a part he would have been ideally suited to and Billy Wilder wanted him. However he turned the part down (apparently he had a problem with Wilder and never worked with him). He would have been much better than Bogart who was miscast.
Great reaction to one of my favorite Bogart films. But you really need to see To Have and Have Not. It's when Bogart met 19 year old Lauren Bacall. When a lead couple of a movie has real live chemistry on screen it's said the screen sizzles. On watching it all you'll only wonder how long it took for Humphrey Bogart to divorce his current wife. The marriage was unhappy anyway. And never mind the age difference. The other movies they did together were the same. You've seen enough Noir now to handle The Big Sleep, but don't worry if you don't get it on first viewing. When my husband and I were young we only saw chopped up versions on local stations and so real comprehension was impossible. We finally got to see it uncut on TCM when we were older and it STILL took us a couple of times to follow all of it. I've seen trivia that says the writers themselves weren't sure where it was going for a while. Key Largo is much more accessible, and like The Big Sleep, Bogie and Bacall make it shine. 🧓🎭💥📽️
Allegedly, the called Raymond Chandler from the set of _The Big Sleep_ and asked him "Who killed [redacted]?" and he said he didn't know.

Henryellow: Did you say that everyone, the Larabee's staff and her father, knew about Sabrina's botched suicide "attempt"?
That is absolutely NOT the case. No one knew except Sabrina, with her obviously - without it having to be shown on-screen (use some common sense) - having retrieved her suicide note from her father's room that same night.
I assumed the door was locked and Sabrina wasn't able to retrieve the letter. But if the doors (and windows) are never locked, then it would be easier for her to take away the letter.
