Rather than a lens to see the world through, the book of Jonah acts as a mirror to see ourselves. Jonah’s story exposes our own tendency to co-opt God for the life we want rather than surrender to the life He has for us.
We exist to love God, love people, and make disciples of Jesus Christ.

Man, this sermon really impacted me. I can totally relate to wrestling with God in my 20s. I had joined the military to go fight in Afghanistan, and I thought I was gonna make a career of it as an army officer. I was confronted in 2014 to leave the army And go to full-time ministry and I really wrestled with that for a while. The Lord persisted however and I’ve been gladly serving a full-time ministry. I really resonated with the statement by Matt “do you want the life you envisioned? Or do you want the life that I have for you?“ I wrestled because I didn’t want the things that God was offering to me. I wanted power I wanted achievements I wanted to increase financially. Full-time ministry just sounded really boring and with little reward. Again, the Lord wouldn’t let me go and I have been in full-time ministry since 2018. I have discovered real joy and real satisfaction. My relationship with him has never been better. My marriage has never been better. I’m really grateful for his calling.

Amazing sermon, awesome God! oh the goodness of the Lord Jesus to welcome every one who returns to Him not because of what we can do but bcoz of who He is, a Father who is always after our own good, there is hope and lasting joy in his presence. To him be all the glory!!!

I like that: smaller view of God and an elevated view of ourselves!

I gave up my dream career out of what i thought was obedience with no plan B. 4 years later and I still don't feel like the Lord has made known to me what the purpose of it was. I struggle with God every day and regretting my obedience...

      Praying for you tonight man.
I pray that you would heard the Lords voice clearly, and that he would give you grace in the waiting.

U can't flee from his moral presence.... even if you could keep his law 24/7 inwardly and outwardly you would still only be achieving the basic 101 of sonship

@Pastor Matt, you should listen to "Tuesdays" by Jake Scott if you don't already know it. Great song about marriage that echos your sentiment about the Christian walk at the 27:00 minute mark.

The song is only 4 minutes isn't it

@@manynoree2173… I think the song is only about 3.5 minutes. Pretty short. I’ve heard it at several weddings.

@@manynoree2173, I was referring to the 27 minute mark of his message here in my first comment.

Maybe Jesus sold it all to ransom us.
