    I haven't watched the film yet, but I did read the book. I think this is a common thing in Hollywood, and especially in this era, but the ingles was in his early 20's, not his mid 40's, and Maria was barely out of grade school. I obscenity in the milk of thy casting.

      i heard that the casting was chosing by the autor of the book (Hemingway) He sent a copy of his book to Ingrid Bergman , and wrote a note telling she'is Maria

      Aside from the fact that Hemingway wrote the Robert Jordan character with Cooper in mind, it would have been very hard to find a leading man in his early 20s who had the star power and screen presence that Cooper had. This role required the actor to be stoic, idealistic, reluctantly romantic, and adventurous. It was basically custom-made for him, even though he was older.

    My grandmother saw this film in the theater in 1944 at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, when she was 19 years old. She wrote: "Mary, Betty and I went down to Hall and saw Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman in “For Whom the Bell Tolls” in technicolor. Magnificent is the word -- we dripped all over the place. Not Mary tho. Not out til 6:30. What a picture!!! I can’t put into words what happened to me when I sat there and saw and thought and experienced. I saw clearly the future -- my whole life, past and present and future. My destiny, I guess. I have only to face it now -- it’s all cleared up, all the questions are answered -- except one maybe and that will come later. It isn’t imagination -- it’s . I saw it and felt it." Movies change lives.

      Wow. That's amazing. Thank you for sharing your grandmother's memory of seeing this film. This was only Gary Cooper's second film in color and his best-known film in color (and Ingrid Berman's first film in color), so I can just imagine how exciting it must have been for fans back then to see this film in Technicolor. Plus, the whole story is so epic.

    Seems like any movie star or leading man you ever liked in the movies, they all seem to pale when compared to Gary Cooper. He really stood out in so many ways. When I was a young girl, I watched his movies and used to dream that there was really a man out there like that somewhere.

    • @avocate2017
      @avocate2017 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I agree wholeheartedly. More recent leading men like Harrison Ford and Kevin Costner have been compared to Gary Cooper, but they pale in comparison. Cooper had the complete package as a leading man. He had a timeless male beauty, a sincere face, a quiet charisma, and an amazing personal style. It's no surprise that he was considered the ideal American male during his time. Even other leading men of that era--like Clark Gable, Cary Grant, and Gregory Peck--didn't come close.

      Some years back was in Southern Chile in a cab. Talking a bit with the driver mentioned that I had driven cab in America. His face kind of lit up and the first thing he said after confirming I was American was 'Gary Cooper!'. Very cool.

      Let's not. Spain in 1936 was anything but woke. Hemingway also not so much. It is what it is. We can be observant of our modern culture and values in many way without sanding down timepieces that are exactly that. Flawed. Original.
