The WordPress community is witnessing a heated legal dispute between Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic and co-creator of WordPress, and WP Engine. The controversy began when Mullenweg accused WP Engine of profiting off the WordPress open-source project without giving back to the community, calling it a "cancer to WordPress."
In response, WP Engine sent a cease-and-desist letter to Automattic, defending their use of WordPress trademarks under fair use laws. Automattic fired back with their own cease-and-desist, claiming WP Engine is misleading consumers and infringing on the WordPress and WooCommerce trademarks.
With both companies alleging misuse of trademarks, the situation is set to turn into a major legal battle. WP Engine stands firm, accusing Mullenweg of making outrageous financial demands and launching a smear campaign that has hurt their business.
Could this legal fight change the future of WordPress hosting services? Watch the video to learn more about this brewing controversy, and how it may affect WordPress users and hosting providers alike.
Pure click bait title
The fact that opensource advocates like matt are feeling the need to push back agains companies bought by private equities is a really bad omen.
We stand to lose much much more money from not having open source software as a society and as professionals, than any private equity firm can stand to make from sucking markets that depend on these dry.
It's abhorent that people defend this, you depend directly on opensource, your channel depends on opensource, the phone you use depends on it, the websites and you build and host depend on it
At 1:59 you say that Matt's WHOLE problem is that they are named >wp< engine. Why take the time to make a video to misrepresent the situation this massively? Why not try to understand the actual WHOLE problem before sitting down and recording yourself? You make yourself look like a shill more than anything
why take the time to write a comment claiming he got something wrong without explaining what is actually right?
After watching tons of material of this issue, Luka is certainly not unprepared in this video. It's funny that Mullenweg sycophants accusing people who call out Mullenweg for his mafia like actions to be "shills". Did you get a script on how to troll from Automattic? The amount of "shill" usage I saw in last 3 days in context of this issue I didn't see in my whole life.
@@tech-nomade Comment took me 30 seconds, producing a 10 min video takes significantly more time and resources.
Regarding what is right: Matt is blurry about the usage of the two letters w p - it is not the whole problem in any way. The real legal issue is a trademark violation. Their hosting plans are or were named, not willing to check their site every day, "core WordPress", "enterprise WordPress" - without license. Same for WooCommerce.
He would not push hard for the trademark violation, if WPE wasn't acting like a parasite, massively benefitting from WordPress being open source and GPL licensed without giving back appropriately. No WordPress - no WPE. Nobody contributing - WordPress falls behind. But no problem for WPE because others spend time and money to improve WordPress. The current situation is just a consequence of this behavior.
40 hours a week is ridiculous for an operation of this size.
And then he also claims they did overwrite the Stripe token for attribution of the Woocommerce Stripe payment integration, which is so so shitty to begin with if true. Mindboggling to stoop so low.
how much did WPEngine pay you for this?
max 50$ they are cheap after all lol
certainly more than you get paid by broke Automattic
@@tech-nomade any amount is bigger than 0$. if u gonna be a smart ass, at least be smart, cuz u just sound like an ordinary ass otherwise.
At least 8% of their revenue
Don't forget that WP engine hacked the donate and affiliate badges
no, they didn't "hack" anything. they can change the source code as they wish. This is not hacking but customization. Funny you don't mention what for they changed it - to hide Mullenwegs lies on WP Engine he pushed to all wp admin home pages.
Luka knows nothing
Please take this down
why?
Please rename your channel to "Luka doesn't know".
Luka, you're just plain wrong on this. Matt has every right and is ultimately protecting wordpress's future.
He's protecting only his/Automattic's financial interests. And even at this he isn't good. He fkd wordpress. So many people already looking for alternatives. I bet wordpress will lose significant amount of market share next months and year. Looks like Mullenweg is acting based on the motto: If I can't have it (half a billion annual revenue), no one can.
code is code
brand is brand
Yawn, he's not done
100% done.
👎
Yes. Stop using WP Engine. Your life will be better.
Matt is right about everything.
Matt wants money. If WP loss then it will affect other companies that also build over WP
Matt/Automattic contribute far more to the community compared to WP Engine. There's really no comparison. I stand with Matt.
@@JanusJanavasIf you force to contribute to community. Then it is not open source...
They can go with different licenses like Hashicorp, Redis, MongoDB did...
This is purely about money.
Astroturfer
& you're insane if you consider yourself an open source advocate 🥴
Then how the WP is called an Open source.
Matt need money😂
WordPress is open-source, but the resources on WordPressDotOrg aren't free. It costs money (millions of dollars) to maintain WordPressDotOrg and all the APIs it provides.
LOL, it seems like you don't quite understand this basic fact.
Nice try diddy.
good work, indeed. something you can't say about Mullenweg and his sycophants.
btw you're not a lawyer or any authority on this so what do you really know??
he doesn't have to be to post his opinion on social media.
@@tech-nomade u got so hurt, coming here talking shii under every single comment for free u sayin? Get a job.
Really good content!
Good summary
summary of wp engine's attempt at framing the situation maybe
@@PK-ls8fs no, good summary of what is going on with this Maniac Mullenweg. And you sycophants are ridiculous. I rarely see such storm of bots and rtrds to any topic.
@@tech-nomade the mighty storm of 39 comments... year right. And then you top it with: people who disagree with your opionion are bots or "rtrds" - as pathetic as WPE business conduct.
@@PK-ls8fs yea this guy is under every comment, definitely getting some $$$ lmao. What a joke a$$ broke a$$ rtrd bot lmao.
