I've actually seen the car seat thing it's very much true. I've picked up my nephew a few times late (close to closing time) and its generally the same group of kids are left there with their car seats waiting on a ride and i would hear the teacher making calls to see who would be pickup the child. Then I've noticed kids that are raised in the hood are typically better at caring for themselves. that including crossing the streets correctly, answering the door, going to bed and washing up, getting ready for school, and fixing themselves something to eat and at times being able to say what they want (the being articulate part is a hit or miss but being self reliant is generally always true). I've seen all of this either through friends and their kids and family member kids sadly.

I worked at a preschool and there was a 1yo there who was too self sufficient for daycare and was causing trouble out of boredom, so they sent her to us, barely potty trained.
