I was with VA-176 and VA -85 from 1983 to 1987. Made cruses on the USS Independence, Saratoga and Forestall. I have so many memories of watching the F-14’s scream off of the deck. Truly an incredible aircraft, Love that plane.
As a kid I was impressed by the first illustrations of the Tomcat prototypes I read about in Reader's Digest. As an almost retired pensioner, I'm still more impressed by the Tomcat than by any other fighter jet that came after it. No matter how superior the newer models are in performance, radar technology or weaponry. Hats off to Grumman!
Love that bird. 40 years after my service aboard Enterprise, there was a local air show that featured one. I got within 30 feet of it sitting on the line and I could smell the JP. I've never known of any machine to take the punishment of a carrier bird, a tribute to Naval maintenance.
It may not be modern though as a Superiority Fighter The F-14 Would still give today's Fighters a run for their money and supersede them in other area's.
I was born in the 1970s. My favorite uncle was a Navy then Navy Reserve fighter pilot. If I had been a boy, I would have enlisted. My uncle explained that most of the guys would vomit under the extreme G-Force for the first 2 times. If you vomited a third time, you were cut. He didn't want to be cut, so he swallowed the vomit. Me, when I did an Indie Car ride along, the extreme Gs made me crack up with laughter and happiness. I even ride Six Flags rollercoaster by myself on a slow day. The Superman ride is my favorite!
50 years later and it’s still the “Almighty” absolutely Nothing can match this aircraft !! Not A Thing ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Born in US with Iranian Money! Matured and tested by 8 years war! God bless United States Navy and Imperial Iranian Air Force. Long live the Tomcat❤❤❤❤❤
Dogfighting and ACM, yes. She had quite a few tricks up her sleeve. However it’d would need to be modernized for AMRAAMs to stay competitive in BVR fights. Fox-1s such as the Sparrow and early versions of the Phoenix require the aircraft to maintain lock with its target for missile guidance. Fox-3s like the AMRAAM can be fired and the aircraft can go cold while the missile’s guidance system takes over. Wish the Super Tomcat program saw the light of day. Would’ve been an amazing aircraft.
I loved the f--14 tomcat when I was on the uss independence, 73-75 cruises ,would still be flying that jet today updated, but because of cost and maintenance, they had to retire it.I think head to head, even today it's better than the FA-18 today
The F-14A was initially equipped with two Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-412A (or JTF10A) augmented turbofan engines, each rated at 20,900 lb (93 kN) of static uninstalled thrust, which enabled the aircraft to attain a maximum speed of Mach 2.34.
Video is great the tomcat is my favorite fighter jet love the sweep wings my brother flew one till he retired was even in desert storm was really good even went to top gun not bad for a country boy from North Carolina
This year marks my 20th for wearing the cloth of our nation (as one of my previous COs would say). There are few things in my enlisted military service that fill me with so much pride as throwing out hand signals to a pilot as a plane captain. I saw the F-14s fly around in their last days back in 2005 in VA. I saw an F-14 on the flight line up in Maryland around 2006-07 and I remember my old QA PO1 poking fun at us by saying "look at the old dinosaur" (we were an F-18 squadron) ;)
The Navy's Most Lethal Warplane. Want To Fly Against An F-14 Tomcat? GOOD LUCK, You'll Need It. AWESOME Jet Fighter. My Number#1, Followed By The Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons😊.
I remember when I first saw Tom Cat I fell in love she was beautiful and Incredibly fast and her retractable Wing configuration gave her the ability to dogfight and the Phoenix missile what's something to be reckoned with
Lyrics: Every night the dream's always the same Can't escape these walls of dark decay Feel me drowning underneath the waves Every time it never seems to change To change Took you away and now They're gonna get it, all I have You know now you're gone And I just want to have you back again Hollow heart is all I have today Someone came and pulled away the veins They stitched it up and put me on display But nothing seems to cure me of the pain The pain Took you away and now They're gonna get it, all I have You know now you're gone And I just want to have you back again Took you away Took you away Took you away Took you away
So when Iran asks China and Russia to seriously upgrade the engines on that bird, with lets say super cruise and thrust vectoring, and a shiny new set of air to air, and air to ground missiles. What happens to our slower more vulnerable attack aircraft? And just what pencil pusher, decided that would be a perfect plane to abandon there, instead of bringing them home?!?!
Tomcat’s avionics are largely incompatible with newer tech. This was the first plane with a microprocessor built into it and interfaces with a mechanical computer for its fire control system since it came in before the integration of GPS onto military aircraft. Compared to a Super Hornet where an avionics upgrade can be done with a toolbox and a laptop, you’d have to essentially gut a Tomcat and drop that massive INS out to even work on its avionics. High maintenance even by US standards and difficulty to retrofit due to the above reasons played rather significant roles in retiring it, and that’s why I find it highly unlikely Iran will ever retrofit their existing fleet. It’d be cheaper in the short and long term to just buy newer, more capable aircraft if the option ever becomes available. The Tomcat might be their best fighter at the moment, but its era in modern air combat is long gone. Regarding why Iran has them, the Shah’s government collapsed more or less overnight to the Iranian government we know today. American engineers and whatever flight crews were around had to be evacuated out of the country asap. They had managed to sabotage a handful of AIM-54s before they left, but unfortunately everything else had to be left behind. A handful of F-14As that had not yet been delivered to Iran were seized by the US and later transferred into the fleet.

Wow the year I was born 83
The sexiest and best airplane ever.

Now That’s how you spend our Taxes 👊
still worth it, kinda
Long live the F-14 Tomcat ! Rulers of the sky ! Peace ☮️ !
best jet of all time. My favourite for sure
I laughed when Rooster got into the back seat of an F14 and exclaimed “This is so old!”
It may not be modern though as a Superiority Fighter The F-14 Would still give today's Fighters a run for their money and supersede them in other area's.
Under appreciated magnificence. It should still be flying CAP today.
We have no Coast anymore
You are right, it should still be flying. All it needed was up to date equipment and software. Or built new one to replase the old ones
The "Cat" was truly an icon in Naval aviation.

The Tomcat is my favorite Navy fighter. The F-14D, obviously. That was really great.
By far the best aircraft of all time. It can still hold its own against any modern fighter.

You had one of the best jobs in the world. Special people fly those beasts. Thank you!

TF30 was ok for F-111 but not the F-14.
@@briancooper2112 they also don't auto inject randomly lmao 🤣😂 big plus for a fighter jet lol
@@briancooper2112 f1-11 aardvark heard good and bad heavy but great wing spand though tf30,p,412a intakes were too small , but got job done
@@demonsmasheroni7354 wtf?

Nice work. Loved the Tomcat when I was on the Nimitz.
Yep, I just felt the blood rush from my head to my other head lol, nicely done, with objectively and subjectively the best jet the Navy fielded.
Nice stuff, man. Thanks for the effort.
by far the best video I have seen on this awesome fighter
That was a GREAT video! Loved working on the F-14A at the NADEP Norfolk flight line hanger, LP-167!
Bast video I’ve seen in a long while and an amazing tune for it.
I always knew I needed Tomcat Synthwave.
The singer of this song is Greta Link, just amazed to find it on this video, good choice.
Video is great the tomcat is my favorite fighter jet love the sweep wings my brother flew one till he retired was even in desert storm was really good even went to top gun not bad for a country boy from North Carolina

They should have updated the F-14 Tomcat with new engines, avionics, aesa radar, and computers.
It's not like there weren't plans to do so. Dick Cheney really was a dick.

Hollow heart is all I have today
Someone came and pulled away the veins
They stitched it up and put me on display
But nothing seems to cure me of the pain
The pain
Took you away and now
They're gonna get it, all I have
You know now you're gone
And I just want to have you back again
Took you away
