I have followed the war in Ukraine with great interest since the very beginning.
Since probably the great majority of the people that view the film at TIFF likely will not have extensive knowledge of this war, the movie serves a purpose in enabling Russia's agenda. Typically they like to send out a barrage of mixed and contradictory messages to their own population until they give up trying to know what is and isn't true. To a foreign audience, specifically one that is not particularly engaged with this conflict, it serves to provide alternate "facts" that benefit the Russian narrative. Very few.people are immune to this type of smoke and mirrors. Russia is doing everything Germany did in WW2 except concentration camps. And they're calling.their victims.Nazis. Putrid Putins people threaten to kill my children.weekly with their nuclear rhetoric. People are oblivious, which is probably good, but governments need to step up

I agree. For people who have not been following the war, a much more reputable information source would be our own CBC's weekly series on the war, as it played out. On each of the 2 February anniversaries, PBS and others have also provided full length documentaries on the major battles to date. Vice News is a good source, as is Jerome Starky with the BBC.
I also have a number of favourites among the Ukrainian war bloggers who post their content from the front lines. Sadly, I've not been watching them as much lately. So many of them are dying out there 😥

Operator Starsky , he is Ukrainian vet. very incisive analysis. Phillip Ittner, lives in Kyiv, worked for major US news outlet , has lived in Russia, excellent reporting. Jake Broe, American veteran who covers the news and puts out a short video every few days.

And who decides what is "propaganda", and what isn't? I haven't seen the film yet, but I am not comfortable with this kind of rhetoric coming from government officials, especially if they are still in office.

RT America lost its license two years after Trofimova quit. My understanding is that she also worked at CBC in the past.
I disagree with some of her positions after listening to last night's CBC interview. She did not provide a good explanation as to why she was allowed to film so close to the frontline, so I believe Russian authorities allowed her access, whether she is aware of it or not. She also should have been more direct in her support for the victory of Ukraine (instead of ambiguous "peace"), return of all annexed territories and extradition of all war criminals. And she should not have called those Russian soldiers "victims of geopolitics as well as the Ukrainians". There is "geopolitics" and there is carpet bombing. Russia is the unprovoked aggressor, the fighting is done mostly on Ukrainian territory, and almost all of "collateral damage" and victims of war crimes are Ukrainian civilians.
Anastasia's personal opinions aside, what's in her film matters more. I can see why she assumed certain facts to be common knowledge if they were covered by major news agencies or historical events if they are part of a school program. And to show that enemy soldiers can have a human side and that not all of them are rapists and child murderers is not "propaganda", it's been true for all wars. I don't see how it can possibly hurt Ukraine's war effort or "white-wash" actual war crimes committed.

The film humanizes soldiers of an invading army internationally recognized as a terrorist state that has committed countless war crimes. We don't need to hear how, at their core, they're just "ordinary guys too". Just like we didn't need films about Nazi soldiers just following orders from Hitler and their commanders. No one should feel "sorry" for these soldiers who are "just doing as they are told" and it's insane that TIFF is pretending this is acceptable under the guise of this being an "Anti War" documentary while it's very clear the thematic intention is to sell a favorable outlook of the average russian soldier to the general public. Pretending that this is a democratic exercise of "freedom of speech" is quite sad. This is simply organized, funded propaganda.

I see a great difference between the people who want to have an individual choice, and the people who act as a monolith group that is employing methods like bullying and threatening the safety of TIFF's workers, volunteers, and movie goers. As separate individuals, we are weaker. I think we should make an effort to protect our individual rights. Write a letter to Freeland (I did), contact TIFF and express your support (I did), etc.

I'm glad we agree that the orcs should gtfo of Ukraine. I disagree about guns and rude talk, though. Canadians are not Americans. We earned our separation from England in 1982 by being agreeable, not by going to war, and many (but not all) of us are ok with that.
I am from Ukraine, and have a big family here in Canada and back home. I would like this movie to be presented, shown and watched by people. We all want the war to end. First step to understand that from both sides are simple ordinary people who only want to live their lives and this situation is mostly provocated by politicians. Very pity that Ukrainians don't protest those Gestapo methods which exist right now in Ukraine. People who don't want to kill others are beaten, killed by the government. Many young men risk to escape Ukraine, crossing border, are being dead while crossing rivers, frozen in mountains. Shame on us. Look what is going on in our own country. Corruption at craze highest level, all is being sold and stollen. What sense to protest just a movie, if you keep silent while your own people are killed by Ukrainian government.
