I had a friend from Japan that had the Blue New 3DS XL and I always wanted one but we only got red and black in the US, so I was happy we got the galaxy style.
I bought a New Galaxy Style 3DS XL after goodwilling my 2DS years ago (serial number ripped off and I couldn't trade it in), and even though I think it's tacky, yeah, I still love the dang thing. I also find it funny how the previous owner only played F2P games on it and Pokemon.
Being a Nintendo fan through 2015-2016 was a true pilgrimage. Started with later known as Zelda BotW delayed to the next year, at the beginning of BOTH 2015 and 2016, Iwata passed away, numerous misfires on first party output, and we know the existence of NX since 2015 as well. And in 2016 it was seriously nothing, not saying the few games coming out to Wii U and more games on 3DS are bad but the entire atmosphere around Nintendo fans was just about "waiting for NX reveal". The E3 showing of BotW was awesome, but we also know it's not coming out in 2016. All of these finally come to an end when Nintendo tweet out about first look at NX.
I’m just going to say it, Paper Mario Color Splash is MUCH better than people give it credit for. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. But was it terrible? No! It’s one of the most memorable and funny games i’ve played, I think it’s honestly a very fantastic game. I loved the music especially as well. I still play it about once a year to this day!
I remember seeing the Direct with Reggie Fis Amie hold the Galaxy Edition New 3DS XL I still want to get my hands on one eventually but man that 3Ds Direct did rule overall.
Ahh yes 2016. December at my old job during lunch this girl said she was getting her daughter a New 3DS for Christmas and I told her to just 3 months and get a Switch. She insisted that it's what her daughter wanted and then said she needed to buy a charger with it. I very smugly said it'd be dumb if any company sold an electronic device without it's charger and she said "yeah but it doesn't bring one". My reputation for being the electronics guy made me double down and said " how much you wanna bet it brings one?". I proceeded to call Gamestop and asked if the New Nintendo 3DS included a charger "no they don't". I never felt dumber that year thanks to Nintendo's cost saving measurements.
I remember being so excited for the next console because it was hyped up this year, but I was disappointed that no one cared about the then current system, the Wii U, very much. Then, 2018 came along and that killed almost all interest I had in the Switch. Besides Smash, there was nothing else on Switch that year. I missed the Wii U at that point and was extra disappointed that people have forsaken the console. Oh well.
@@yayo_youtube I was so angry with Nintendo I was even considering selling my Switch. Nowadays… I think that’s a little extreme, but at the time there was nothing but disappointments on Switch.
@@nickk3077 I think the 3DS era was way better than the Switch era, but the Wii U era being better than the switch, in some ways, yeah. Because even if the games were bad, they were complete, but there was droughts, but the switch has had a worse drought in 2020, no, the worst nintendo drought was the 2020 one. But the nintendo cycle that started in the 2000s was bad console, good console, but in retrospect, old console good, new console bad, as it applies to many people, not me.

I loved fire emblem fates. It was the first time I got into mainline Nintendo and invested in DLCs, buying even the last section of the game too. Loved Sun and moon as well. Pretty good memories now that I look back! Thanks for the vid
Here’s what blows my mind. Scott is showing us what many consider one of Nintendo’s weakest years. But even when Nintendo was “phoning it in”, they still managed to release more games than we’ve been getting during peak Switch years. Just add up the Wii U and 3DS games and compare it to any year for the Switch. Nintendo collapsing their home and handheld software departments hasn’t resulted in more games for their single system.
True, but they now don’t have the benefit of developing for a lower-power handheld. Every game is an HD console game. A 3DS game was always going to be easier to produce than a Switch game.
I got this 3DS shortly before the Switch was fully revealed. Back then, I was a stupid kid who didn't pay attention at all to what was going on video game news wise, and I was (and, still am, to an extent) totally fine with what nintendo was doing as I was someone who couldn't often tell a bad/boring nintendo game from a good one. I had gotten this New 3DS XL Model as a gift after my old 3DS XL model's circle pad fell off and the hinge started to crack. It felt really good to use an actual circle pad again and not the hard, sharp stick underneath and I also enjoyed having a variant rather than the base look of a console for once. All that said, no matter what anyone says, I will always cherish this 3DS model.
I feel like in 2016,Nintendo just didn't knew what to do,they were in a really bad situation,an important member of the company passed away and they were focused on their next console so 2016 was basically a filler year for them
I think a great thought experiment would be trying to answer the question "What if the Switch failed and Nintendo had to go back to the 3DS?" My idea (which probably wouldn't have happened) is that Nintendo stockpiled Wii U ports on 3DS to keep it going. Switch continues for a few years until they announce the Next DS (I can't be clever enough to make an actual Nintendo name). I imagine they would just retool all the Switch guts to be in the Next DS but with the classic 2 screens and a full second circle pad. It would be backwards compatible with DS and 3DS so there would be an incredible backlog Day 1 plus rereleasing any other Wii U games on the eShop. THEN add another card slot for Switch games. Within the first few months, they'd put out a Zelda Collection. Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, A Link Between Worlds all playable anyway plus Wind Waker and Twilight Princess NDS. For extra compatibility, all Nintendo Bluetooth controllers pairable on Next DS and it comes with a grip with full triggers and back paddles. Maybe a dock sold separately for hardcore gamers but the system would be marketed like the DS and 3DS and Nintendo would stick to handhelds for awhile. None of this matters of course but it's just a fun idea.
Honestly, I really enjoyed this video of Scott just sitting down, and saying how things were with being a fan of Nintendo in 2016, with him just going through a bunch of the major games that were released then and synopsising each one. Frankly, I believe this could be a sort of series that could even be put on the main channel (much like the Switch years or E3 videos). I'd also really like to see Scott try and get into, or just understand, Fates, or Fire Emblem in general. That will be a fun derailing of Scott's mind.
One thing I haaaaate about the N3DSXL is the gloss. It's hard enough to appreciate the designs on the Fire Emblem Fates limited edition because of the ivroy on white but and ebony on black but the high gloss makes every finger print and scuff so visible and looking at it in direct light source the thing just shines. Really wish they had it in matte.
Also, I think I saw a news article on TV in Spanish on mario games promoting them, not a commercial, just a news article, and it had, I think Mario Party 10 and Mario and Luigi Paper Jam footage.
I’m happy that I was to young to comprehend 2016. I didn’t have to suffer. Hell I don’t think I own any 2016 Nintendo games even to this day Edit: I own the eShop exclusives Kirby 3DS spin-offs
I remember playing Kirby Planet Robobot that year and I was one heck of a happy camper that year!! Same can be said about Paper Mario Color Splash! Both were games with plenty of love poured into them! Unfortunately, that’s about all I got to be excited for that year. I eventually got Twilight Princess and StarFox and loved ‘em, but yeah.
2016 was a pretty good year in gaming for me personally. I liked Paper Mario Color Splash and Yo-kai Watch 2 finally got localized to the states. So I’d say it was pretty good.
I remember being hyped for Hyrule Warriors Legends since I couldn't afford to get a WiiU, and enjoyed the hell out of it when it came out for at least a hundred hours. There was nothing more satisfying for me than finally getting to play as Ganondorf. Now, I'm glad to have all that and the WiiU content in the Definitive Edition on Switch.
I’d love to see Scott do a video about the last years of the 3DS, 2016-2018. It was in a weird place where consumers both casual and hardcore were ready to move on, but Nintendo wasn’t ready to abandon it in case the Switch didn’t work out. The games were lots of remakes, ports, and compilations and a lot of them went under the radar because of that. In 2017 people wanted the 3DS to die but nowadays are ready to be more nostalgic about it.
23:28 as an owner of a modded 3DS, i often find myself removing the card. not so much recently, mainly for large files, but i used to do it so much that i broke the screws off the back plate.
I personally liked most of 2016’s games, paper jam I really enjoyed playing that game mainly because I’m not a 2000s kid so I’ve never experienced classic mario and Luigi rpg or even paper Mario rpg, color splash I enjoyed the vibe of it but I never got to finish it as I got stuck on one part and didn’t bother the finish it, star rush I absolutely enjoyed it was such a fun game and although it doesn’t follow the normal Mario party formula it’s at least a decent game in the franchise
I personally have fonder memories of 2016 since that was my first year as a Wii U owner since I got one for Christmas in 2015, so I was really discovering the library more that year and playing a lot of the best Wii U games for the first time (it especially helps that Nintendo Selects for 3DS and Wii U started releasing that year). It was frustrating when paying attention to the news (especially that E3 when the only game they focused on was BotW which was nice to get news on but also pretty discouraging because of the lack of other game announcements), but that was the only year where I was regularly playing Wii U and not obsessing over the Switch.
I feel sort of the reverse of you, honestly; In hindsight, I see this as a kinda whatever year, but in the moment, the three-tier punch of Fire Emblem Fates, Bravely Second, and Sun and Moon, some of my genuine favorite games of all time, was honestly incredible enough to keep me invested throughout the year.
@@bgalex776 More of a Birthright and Revelations fan here, but I stand with you. I wasn’t good enough at FE yet to beat Conquest on anything higher than normal at age 11, so I didn’t like it as much then as I do now. Great games still! Now a lifelong fan of the series.
I do agree that Meteoid Prime Federation Force isn't that bad but I personally have to dock some points aways from it cause they released Blast Ball separately for free on the E Shop which was a little weird.

Everyone was excited and talking about the NX, whatever nintendo was putting out, and everyone was in it together. Considering how toxic the nintendo fanbase and community has gotten, I kinda miss that
I seriously wonder WHEN the fanbase went toxic. Was is because of Switch? Twitter? Regardless it's really a shame
@@MrTheDvok I know, right? its a shame to see so much toxicity about games, something that's meant to be fun and bring us all together. Of course, sometimes backlash is appropriate but there's just so much unnecessary hate going around. it feels like a pain now to talk about games, which really sucks since I LOOOVE talking about games with people! I hope things get less gross in the future, although it's unlikely.
@@MrTheDvok i think the switch's success made the nintendo fanbase far larger, and considering twitter has went down the shitter since 2018, the fanbase just became really awful afterwards
it's legit not even fun to engage in it anymore, discussions completely fall apart when you don't agree with someone
@@MrTheDvok It was getting a bit bad for a bit, but I think it REALLY started to get toxic after the 35th anniversary mario direct came out. Also pandemic
@@therealmarioplumber7440 true, 2016-2019 was the peak of being a Nintendo fan
Star Fox Zero is what saved the year for me since I was one of the few people that liked it.
It's fun how this channel has the like, Ashens style, whereas the main channel is like Nostalgia Nerd/insert other more cinematic TH-camr here.
idk how i never realised fates was a 2016 release, since that was the year i got into fire emblem .. admittedly, i enjoy fates !! ive only played conquest since i couldnt find birthright after obtaining conquest (i liked the dark aesthetics of conquest which was why i started with it) but i still want to eventually try birthright and revelation
edit: i forgot the galaxy 3dsXL was also being covered in this vid but the galaxy 3dsXL was my first big purchase i ever made with my own money! i think i got the system in 2017 or 2018 from best buy for about $165-170 (which was super discounted for the system?? idk why), and its still my favourite console honestly !! i kind of wish the XL had interchangeable plates like the new 3ds, but the galaxy print is very pretty to me
I had a friend from Japan that had the Blue New 3DS XL and I always wanted one but we only got red and black in the US, so I was happy we got the galaxy style.
I'll always remember 2016 as a great year for the Nintendo online community. It was so fun because we had next to nothing but each other
I bought a New Galaxy Style 3DS XL after goodwilling my 2DS years ago (serial number ripped off and I couldn't trade it in), and even though I think it's tacky, yeah, I still love the dang thing.
As a Halo fan, you Nintendo fans have it lucky. We endured 6 years of Halo 5 and got Infinite...
these are the same scott the woz episodes we love, just without as much editing
I'm so used to seeing Scott in character it feels surreal to find this channel which is totally serious.
I got a Wii U in christmas of 2015 and a 2DS in 2016, so 2016 was one of my favorite years despite Nintendos game lineup
The Tarrey Town music in the background is giving me good vibes
These videos just have a nice comfy feeling of nerding with your friends over games for hours
Honestly, with Fire Emblem Fates and Pokemon Sun & Moon, I was eating GOOD that year.
I remember seeing the Direct with Reggie Fis Amie hold the Galaxy Edition New 3DS XL I still want to get my hands on one eventually but man that 3Ds Direct did rule overall.
I think part of this lost feeling Nintendo was in. Was after the passing of Iwata. I feel a lot of the company was still lost after his passing
Iwata was a legend
im starting to enjoy these videos just as much as the main channel ones. the conversational tone is very nice and relaxing
With The new iPhone have no charger proving that Nintendo are pioneers first no headphone jack now this
Girl? Not a grown woman?
Lmao imagine being such a bitch to customers, you deserve every bit of it
I remember being so excited for the next console because it was hyped up this year, but I was disappointed that no one cared about the then current system, the Wii U, very much. Then, 2018 came along and that killed almost all interest I had in the Switch. Besides Smash, there was nothing else on Switch that year. I missed the Wii U at that point and was extra disappointed that people have forsaken the console. Oh well.
Well, like they say, 2018 was the wait for smash bros year and Wii U ports strikes back.
But I barely used my Switch I got on 2020, and I use the Wii U more, heck I used my 3ds more than my switch.
I love my galaxy new 3ds xl. I still play all my games on it! It really does feel solid, and I honestly like the blue and purple look personally.
Great video! I always like hearing you explain and just talk about video game stuff
I’m living for this new Scott’s Stash content
i love how casual thia video is, feels like we are just hanging out and talking about games.
“You either love it or you hate it. I’m somewhere in the middle” SCOTT
I loved fire emblem fates. It was the first time I got into mainline Nintendo and invested in DLCs, buying even the last section of the game too. Loved Sun and moon as well. Pretty good memories now that I look back! Thanks for the vid
I was just watching your other videos, stop being such a good content creator!
Scott I LOVE these videos I could listen to you talk about games forever.
I was super into pokemon back then, so 2016 was basically the year of pokemon go/wait for sun and moon
I would Kill to see Scott do a full on Scott the Woz video on Kirby Planet Robobot
Oh god that year
I know these videos don't go with Scott's main channel but I feel like they deserve to be on the main channel.
It does not feel like the NES Classic Edition came out 6 years ago.
Man the Wii U days were rough, but it makes me feel like a true fan that I was there to support them during that time.
Your channel is super old
@@lemonlime8949 im 24 years old. Made my first youtube account in 2007.
I feel like in 2016,Nintendo just didn't knew what to do,they were in a really bad situation,an important member of the company passed away and they were focused on their next console so 2016 was basically a filler year for them
6:50 "Devils third is kind either you love it or you hate it.... Im kinda in the middle" classic lol
I think a great thought experiment would be trying to answer the question "What if the Switch failed and Nintendo had to go back to the 3DS?"
My idea (which probably wouldn't have happened) is that Nintendo stockpiled Wii U ports on 3DS to keep it going.
I got the 3ds galaxy and tbh I really like the design. I got it soon after launch for Easter. Yeah Easter dude, I was so lucky that easter
2022 feels a bit like 2016, not gonna lie
I got the NES Mini, five of those Wii U games, and four of those 3DS games in 2016…
…and every amiibo made available that year.
There /is/ the snes edition, but to be fair that's not the easiest to get your hands on. Gloss is always dumb, I have no idea why companies do it.
Get a grip for it. Makes it so your not touching the glossy finish.
Love Scott’s second channel because it’s just stuff to listen to while I work on other things
Also, I think I saw a news article on TV in Spanish on mario games promoting them, not a commercial, just a news article, and it had, I think Mario Party 10 and Mario and Luigi Paper Jam footage.
this channel is one of my favorites
i often put on videos from here whenever i go to bed
I’m happy that I was to young to comprehend 2016. I didn’t have to suffer. Hell I don’t think I own any 2016 Nintendo games even to this day
Edit: I own the eShop exclusives Kirby 3DS spin-offs
2016: The final nails in the coffin that is the Wii U.
This is the New 3DS XL I own. I love everything about it! It’s like it was made for me considering I love blue, purple and the universe.
So fun fact about that Galaxy Style New Nintendo 3Ds XL! It was a Toy 'R' us exclusive in Japan only and it came with a carrying bag!
Perfect photo idea, you playing your galaxy 3ds while wearing the zen master Jordan 4s. Its a vibe my guy.
My SNES 3DS is one of my favorite consoles. I bought it when Scott showed it on an episode and I stimulated the economy that day.
I love these video so much!
I had no idea what hell 2016 was for Nintendo fans. I was just playing on my old 3DS and not aware of the Switch until my friend showed me 8 Deluxe.
2016 was a pretty good year in gaming for me personally. I liked Paper Mario Color Splash and Yo-kai Watch 2 finally got localized to the states. So I’d say it was pretty good.
Nobody:
Scott: Sorry for the premise of the entire video
My N3DS XL is the New Galaxy one! It’s actually my favorite design of that system.
I got the galaxy 3DS and it's my pride and joy, you leave my baby alone scott
I love the galaxy new 3ds xl. Definitely one of the best designs on the system!
23:28 as an owner of a modded 3DS, i often find myself removing the card. not so much recently, mainly for large files, but i used to do it so much that i broke the screws off the back plate.
This channel is great, actually feel like we are just talking to Scott
He completely ignored Yo-kai Watch 2. This will not be forgotten.
when i was 9 my parents got me this design and now it is one of my biggest treasures, thanks mom
Scott your so lucky to have the galaxy style 3DS I'm looking for one reasonably cheap atm since the c stick to my old 2011 3DS
It feels cool hearing Scott outside of a script
I feel sort of the reverse of you, honestly; In hindsight, I see this as a kinda whatever year, but in the moment, the three-tier punch of Fire Emblem Fates, Bravely Second, and Sun and Moon, some of my genuine favorite games of all time, was honestly incredible enough to keep me invested throughout the year.
Ngl, Fire Emblem Fates Conquest was probably the best thing Nintendo did in the second half of the 2010s. Yes, I will stand by this.
Agreed to that I would also add Kirbo, Yokai Watch 2 and of course SMTIV Apocalypse the best worst game in the franchise
Fire Emblem Fates was more of a mixed bag
@@liammcnicholas918 This also.
I do agree that Meteoid Prime Federation Force isn't that bad but I personally have to dock some points aways from it cause they released Blast Ball separately for free on the E Shop which was a little weird.
