I had the great pleasure of listen to Maria Remola in person singing El Ruisenor and it was so superb that opens my eyes and heart to classical Opera, operetta and zarzuela. A true listener enjoy the diversity of sopranos,metzosopranos, tenors and baritones. thanks

Mambo was born in Cuba, as many other styles as well. Now Ms. Sumac singing mambo does not take me anywhere I like to go, her weardnes among other things, was the claim to be an Incan princess, directly descended from Atahualpa, and sing in vocal ranges, which was said to be well over four octaves & claimed to span even five, she was a weard bird aus Peru. Sorry but not my cup of CocaCola !
@Poet2916 If I may give you a bit of advice ..... find Beverly Sills' recording of this and see what she does with it and how she does it. Her Barbiere is fantastic.
I am not degrading. simply stating who I like or dislike. Some people were crazy about Maria Callas, I can not take her one second, to each its own. Ever listgened to Yma Sumac sings mambo, lol , hehehehe. Well we agree to disagree, it is a free World we live in, not everywhere I must add. Have a great day.
Have you heard Roberta Peters sing this in her early days? Beverly in hers early days, 60's was unreal. You shouldn't degrade a singer after her prime.
I myself think that Beverly Sills sucks, so there you go, Remola does a great job on El Barbiere. Beverly ? Try Montserrat Caballe that is the best or Elina Garanca.
The negative part to this interpretation is that Ms Remola does not stick within the tempo of the music composed by Rossini and so it is very disjointed. If you're going to use this interpretation yourself, don't make the same mistake and have a listen to what Ms Sills does and how all her coloratura work flows within the tempo composed by Rossini.

A truly great artist. Her upper register is beyond amazing. But the miracle is her middle and lower voice was so full rich and beautiful.

Lol ..Sills was fantastic but Remola was too. Sills has a down to earth presentation while Remola is more suave and classy.
