Why does everyone like to compare every performance of this aria to Maria Callas? Maria Callas and Teresa Berganza are not even in the same vocal fach, anyway. Callas was a dramatic coloratura soprano, and Berganza is a coloratura mezzo soprano. They both sounded lovely in their own right, but their voices can't be compared in terms of who's better or who's worse.

So many singers add too much ornamentation to this aria, but Teresa keeps it simple and I think that really allows the beauty of the aria to shine through. I really respect her a lot for sticking to what's written in the score. This is something she always lived by. I think this shows a lot of respect for the composer.
Although it is true that Rossini wrote this aria without ornamentation, so that singers could add ornamentation. But you are right. I don't mind for minute that there is no ornamentation. Berganza is great.
Yes! This is just how Adelina Patti sang it in 1905 (the recording can be found in her German Wikipedia article). And Patti had started her opera career when Rossini was still alive.

It is not necessary to choose, thank the Goddess we can listen to both of them and enjoy both of their singing. I don’t agree. Simply because everyone celebrates Callas as if there was no better singer in the world, but she herself created that image. So it’s just fair and honest to compare and say that Berganza is by far doing better at this aria. (I haven’t compared any other of those two) and it doesn’t matter wether or not they are in the same vocal „fach“ because I don’t have to know about things like that. I just listen and know what I like better. And this is by far - BY FAR better than the Callas version. And Callas chose to sing it, so she must also tolerate to be compared. Don’t get me wrong - I WISH it was as you said, but Callas did everything to compare herself and create the illusion of herself of being perfect and the diva and the voice. So she compared and wanted to be compared. It’s only fair to point out that other vocalist were even better. Especially when these vocalists were „a bit“ more modest than Callas was and therefore less celebrated.

This is from the Jean-Pierre Ponnelle movie of Barbiere, with the same cast as the DG recording. It sounds as if the recitatives were recorded separately, so that they would match up to the action in the movie. Berganza's great charm and warmth come through here, as well as her effortless, gorgeous singing. She is my favorite Rossini mezzo of all time, and one of my favorite singers ever.
I don't know how you would do it better than this! She uses just the right amount of coloratura. But it's kind of straightforward, playful, determined . . . and her voice is delicious. My favorite version.
I´m in love with her voice. Perfect control of the fiato, the coloratura and the high notes. And an awesome interpretation of the character of Rossina too.
One of the first operas I ever attended was "Barbiere" in San Francisco. It was 1968 and Berganza was Rosina. I still remember that sparkling performance -- beautifully sung and acted to perfection! We have been lucky to have so many brilliant interpreters of this role, but Berganza has always been one of my favorite singers. Her musicality and intelligence shine through everything she sang. Her Carmen was superb, as well, and her renditions of zarzuela arias are unsurpassed.

Teresa Berganza studied at the Madrid Conservatory under the direction of Lola Rodrígues Aragón. She´s the best mozartian and rossinian singer ever (in my opinion)! She´s still alive, don´t worry :) Teresa lives in San Lorenzo de el Escorial, but still travels a lot. She´s doing masterclasses in all the world or acts as member of the jury on some singing competitions. And also from time to time she performs some recital. She´s incredible and I love her so much!!!!!!!

Wonderful Teresa. Lovely. Thank you so very much. She is the best along with Joyce Di Donato and Renee Fleming. I prefer Teresa to Callas in this rendition. Teresa`s stage presence is brilliant.
That's the thing about Berganza. She always sounds so effortless and she still does interpret music. As Rosina she sounds delightful and as Carmen she sounds sensual. I love Berganza.
This is the best interpretation of this aria. However I prefer more coloratura around the last "giocar" lol. But this is the best. The voice is so clear and you can literally hear every word and feel it.

I think arias, duets, ansambles are from the audio recording which was recorded before - by Deutsche Grammophon... But maybe recitatives were recorded right on the place during shooting the film. t´s my opiniom, I´m not sure, maybe I´m wrong :) And, TERESA IS THE BEST ROSINA EVER :) btw, my pleasure!!
Ask the conductor about that. The same was true for Victoria de Los Angeles. There are conductors who welcome embellishments & others, even amongst the best, who will not tolerate it.

What a lovely voice! I have perfect pitch and have never heard a singer so consistently land in the MIDDLE of every note.
Teresa Berganza is simply wonderful. Here she is absolutely in control of the necessary technique, she is the very model of Rossini singing.
