Scots Guardsman & a Steam Imposter at Carlisle!
Settle Carlisle Steam Special renamed at last minute?
22 & 24 June 23
On 22 June Scots Guardsman, ably "pushed" by a Class 37, ran from York to Carlisle and back over the Settle Carlisle line with The Dalesman excursion.
Two days later Northern Belle ran what was originally shown as the Settle Carlisle Steam Special - except there was no steam involved! In fact on Rail Advent it appeared that the 'Steam' in the name was dropped at the last minute. What was the substitute? No Class 40, unlike the previous Saturday, or even a Class 37. Just the bog standard Class 57 pairing used on most Northern Belle excursions.
All the same both days were fun around Carlisle station where both trains fit in among the regular trains.
Any observations are my own and not intended to show any authority and may show my misunderstanding.

Thanks Les. I usually cut sown what I show of the logs but had a request to show it all - so you got the 20 wagons. Apparently punters do get some refund if the advertised steam isnt available for the BElle.

not very nice if you booked for a steam day out and got a pair of 57s and only one of them was reliable im afraid W C R are a shambles at the moment , but never the less Less its a fantastic vid loved it thanks for sharing stay safe a t b syd 👍

The problem is that WCR are unable to fulfil their promises, as the Northern Belle, of course, uses air braked stock, and the only air braked steam loco WCR has is Tangmere, and I don't know what's happening with that, I suppose it's under repair again (what a shame it isn't still owned by Ian Riley, who knows how to maintain locos well). I'd have thought Northern Belle would be able to seek compensation from WCR for their failure to fulfil their contracted promises

I think Tangmere has been under repair for most of this year. That and other recent minor failures and the central door locking situation suggest a lack of purpose by senior management or owners.

I believe that the punters are advised of the lack of steam a few days before travelling and offered a variety of options and compensation.
