@@achujs I finally got a used one installed and I didnt need to code it. Make sure you get a similar one tho as some only work with certain headlight switches controls
Here we are in 2024 and my 550i has this problem. I’m going to try this out and will repost when complete. Thank you!!! And thank you OP. This is the only video like this I could find.
Thanks to your vid, I had the guts to attempt this repair on my 535i xdrive Msport. The steering wheel was LCI, so it came off differently, but the soldering works! Thanks for saving me $2k!
You just saved me a ton found one locally for $200 from a similar car that is been parted out, did it myself now I'm good to go. Still gonna try and fix the broken one for the heck of it, thanks a million
Guy's I have an easy fix to this problem! Post it everywhere to help people save money. I got the same issue and after watching this video I opened up my wheel also. The cable was surely broken just like yours. I was going to solder it together but then I saw your comment that it happened again and too a closer look at the ribbon cable And figured I could fix the problem forever. I used to mess with electronics when i was younger and am used to soldering. So I cutt the ribbon cables out completely from both ends took out a multimeter and from end to end checked what the ampage the ribbon wire was showing. I went down to ACE hardware and bought some insulated Copper wire cut out the right size and checked the ampage from end to end to make sure it was the same as the ribbon wires. I cut extra wires the same size and the soldered the new copper wires to the clips the ribbon wire was soldered to put it against the side of the wall and hot glued it so that it wouldnt snag and break the soldered points ever again. I turned the housing to make sure the wire wouldnt be pulled apart while turning the wheel and it worked!!!! Ive been driving around almost a week now I opened the wheel again just now and noticed that yup its still holding strong hasn't been tugged at all it seems that if we spread the word We can save all of us thousands of dollars!! The reason I cut out the ribbon wire is because i have repaired my laptop screens many times and those ribbon cables are usually the type found connected to led screens and they can be bent at the ends where they are soldered at because they are thin copper strips they arent like copper wire which is braided so after a turn here and a turn there the opposite way itll surely snap sooner or later. So thats why I just did it this way if you guys cant solder then just buy solder paste which is a solder like glue. Smother the solder paste on the wire and ends and use a heat gun on it and itll harden. If you rather solder make sure you use something called flux its a clearish glue like substance connect the wire to the connector clip and rub flux on the wires then with the soldering iron and solder wire touch the copper cables and it should solder with no hassle. Im so happy that I came across this video cause I saved so much money just because of my hobby from when I was younger. Im sure the tech guys never would have told me it was this easy to access the ribbon cable And replace it and Thanks to this video you gave me the perfect idea. I told some people in the M forums and one guy i guess is using my idea but with his own sinister twist he started buying every part that was broken and is repairing it and said hes gonna sell them for $350 each and that makes me mad because i am giving this free so people can save money during these hard times and that MF is just thinking of ways to make money off it. Anyways i figured we spread the word We can keep ppl from having to waste money on this. Spread the word. The copper wire was only $7 for the little spool and a multi meter is only $10 at walmart. Make sure you get a thin insulated Copper wire because if its too thick you wont be able to make it long enough because the ampage wont be the same as the ribbon cables and wont be long enough for the wheel to turn freely without it snagging and if its too thin youll need to make the cable longer to have the same ampage as the ribboncable and more length will just be a mess because itll have the same problem as the ribbon wire and get in the way. ACE hardware has a very large variety of soldering items and a good variety of cables get a insulated cable that is as thick as the widest part of the led on a pencil. Or buy three different sized wire and check which length is best that matches the ampage of the ribbon cable from end to end. It clearly wont be as long as the ribbon cable because the ribbon cables copper is thin so the ampage is carried thru the whole wire but try to find the right size that matches the ampage and is solderable to the connector that you cut the ribbon cable from. I did it on my first try but I have been messing with soldering irons for years so that was a big help.

Programming is definitely required for F-chassis cars. Conventional programming with E-sys might be enough, but changing the VIN in certain modules is very difficult. I'm noticing that some chip programmers like hextag and CG 9S12 allow for cloning of the SZL module, so perhaps that is the best option.

Shouldnt make it hard to steer as the ribbons are inside the compartment, separate from the yoke of the wheel. Does cause alot of noise tho when turning the wheel. Your hard steering probably from the accident.
Hey bro is there a certain way or a marking to put the clock spring back on ? Or do u just put it back on the same way u took it off?
Yea just put it the way it was the best you can. Make sure you can turn it both ways after.
my f20 has the horn that sometimes is faulty (it has the same steering wheel of this video). Could be this ribbon cable the cause? Thanks ad Regards
Hmm not sure, I do think it is part of the ribbon tho?
Just fixed mine but needed to find another video on how to wind the clock spring back properly.
Did you find one? I didnt film it.

This happend this moring on mine.. thx for the vid.!
Seems like this is a flaw on these cars...your not alone...
@@JacobKnightRiderShop and i just passed the 100.000km mark. So thats 60.000 miles. So i dont know if other people have this same problem arround these miles/km's.. but yeah that's when it happend in my car.
@@dinokadunic5002 My car was at about 60 k miles as well. Programmed flaw? who knows...
@@JacobKnightRiderShop think so, these things happen unfortunately. Hopefully they didn't program too much of these failures :D
Perfect ! Merci Beaucoup ! J'ai passé un dimanche matin à tout démonter (très facile), j'ai ressoudé et tout fonctionne parfaitement ! Merci.
Your welcome.
i really appreciated the video, I was wondering if you can share any URL of the part with us. I have the same problem for my 2011 528i . Thank you very much
Go to ebay Type in : BMW 09-16 F10 F01 STEERING COLUMN CLOCK SPRING
KnightRiderShop thank you very much, have you put the one that you bought used for it yet?
@@montanatatvan13 I didnt need it, as I fixed mine. Ended up returning it.
KnightRiderShop so it still works well? I am glad to hear, i have 2 mechanics in Orange County , CA they both do not know how to fix the cable as you did with soldering iron. Do u think what should I do?
@@montanatatvan13 you can try soldering it or having someone with soldering skills to do it. It's not that hard some people are afraid to try I guess. Mines fine still.
Good video, well done and thanks.
Hi do you need to reprogram after plug off the battery?
I didn't.
that's because all you did was fix the orginal, when replacing with new oem part, needs to be coded
hello you have to disconnect the battery and wait how long before removing the airbag? thank you
at least 1 hour
Do you have to have the car reprogrammed after reinstalling?
No
Great job thank you for the info sir, mine had the same problem.
No problem. Many others have the same issue, this should of been a RECALL by B-M-W
Surely this should be a recall, its dangerous. I'm going to speak with my dealer, it happened to me today while driving. Mines under warranty but this looks like a common problem.
Yes it can be. Should be recalled.
What is the trick to release the lever to remove airbag?
Watch 3:30 seconds in, you use a screwdriver to push up the lever that removes the whole airbag assembly.
@@JacobKnightRiderShop Thank you! Finally, got it after an hour later.🤪 i had to push in the airbag to align the spring then push it up to release. Thanks for the video.
Also, do you need to reset the system with the dealer? My warning ⚠️ lights still ON. Another light came something with a steering chassis?!?!?
@@TechTimeWithT I bought a multi scan tool to reset mine here is the link for the one for BMWs amzn.to/3ICwc6C It paid for itself after the first use so its worth it.
What was the rattling in the airbag?
Not sure, I didnt open the airbag unit up.
What is called this white cable? Where i can buy this? Thank you
Not sure. According to the dealer they dnt sell the cable. It has to be bought with the whole assembly. Try ebay for the unit.
Good stuff man! Did you happen to see the steering angle sensor in the clockspring while you were messing with it?
Not sure I did
Trying to strip my ribbon to expose the copper wires so I can solder it, did you happen to do the same or did you solder it through the plastic ribbon cover?
The hot iron will melt that plastic very easily when your soldering.
Thank you for the video. When you soldered the wires did you strip the insulation or just solder through it. They are so thin I am having trouble stripping the insulation off. If you did strip the insulation do you mind sharing how you did it. Thanks.
I think the heat of a good heat gun is enough to get to the wire to solider them together.
What is the piece behind a steering wheel called?
bmw clock spring?
Don’t close the trunk after taking the battery off😂
Hi mate I got some issues I am in uk but Bmw charge me only part about £500 + labour . I found a reconditioned one the’re saying it needs to programmed.. can u advice me please .. which one shall I buy brand new or reconditioned..?
It's up to you. How much for the recon one?
KnightRiderShop
£150
@@muj2012 I guess it would be worth a try, not sure why they said it would need to be programmed tho. Not sure if thats correct. Its just a ribbon inside with wiring no chips that I could see that would tell me you need to reprogram. keep me updated tho.
KnightRiderShop
I’ll try ur way first and try my luck as I’m quite handy like that..and how would I remove the airbag sign after it’s all fixed, any ideas..thank u so much for ur help I’ll defo let u know how I got on
@@muj2012 I think you can reset the airbag at the dealer for not too much.
Great video 👍
Thank you
where can i purchase the unit to repalce it?
Look at ebay or junk yards
I have heard that you have to re-code the car if you are replacing this part, was it necessary?
Yesterday it cracked in my steering wheel when I turned left and the same error message came up.
Best regards from SWEDEN.
I didnt do it. Did you?
@@JacobKnightRiderShop It was made by bmw when they switched the unit.
nice video, thanks for explaining it very well
You're welcome!
I just did buy one from ebay also, can I just replace it and just delete the fault messages, or must I re-code something?
Yes replace then have the airbag code reset.
What is this part called
Clock Spring
Awesome Work!! I Have 11 - 528i Car And Same Issue.. I Got The Clock Spring From Ebay.. If It All Works.. Im Going To HAVE to Find A Way To Pay U For The How To Video!! 😎
Thanks keep me posted if you fixed it.
What would you charge to solder the ribbon cable?
I probably wouldnt tackle this for someone as i wouldnt be able to warranty it.
KnightRiderShop just want to thank you for this in-depth video.I fixed it today. I had to order the unit off eBay opened it up to make sure the ribbon was intact. Switched it out all is well besides the airbag warning! Thanks again!!!
@@dnice2092 awesome. This must be a common problem as many had this issue.
I have same exact issues with a 328xi 2007..anyone know if I can follow the same steps
You are an angel !!! Thank. I will do it tomorrow !!

Me ajudou muito! consegui consertar o problema igual na minha 535i GT 2011, enviei minha contribuição $ obrigado!
Correction at 6:15, it’s connected with 2 not 3 wires !
3 wire looms is what I meant, dnt recall if it had a separate plug for the 2 wire looms I was reffing tho.
nice video , tks for the help
Your welcome
This is just what I was looking for, haven’t tried it yet but everything in terms of symptoms you mentioned are where I am so I’m pretty sure I’ve the exact same issue.
Thank for taking the time to load the video, also the way you’ve set it out will make the job even easier 🫡

What state do u live in I’ll pay you to fix mine
Me too !!!
Squib ring is easy repair I done mine in 15 mins .
yea but where would you find the slip ring, they dont sell them new that I know of?
@@JacobKnightRiderShop and if you don’t get the correct one for your model some functions may not work so go to bmw pay that little extra and save all the hassle .
@@Alfiepops little extra, they wanted like Over 3 grand, I got a used one on ebay, the hand speed flaps dnt work only but I never used them anyway.
Has anyone here replaced the part yet? If so, was any reprogramming required following the replacement?
Programming is definitely required for F-chassis cars. Conventional programming with E-sys might be enough, but changing the VIN in certain modules is very difficult. I'm noticing that some chip programmers like hextag and CG 9S12 allow for cloning of the SZL module, so perhaps that is the best option.
My horn not working can t you hell me?? 535i f10 2014
Check the wiring to see if everything is connected.
Same thing happened here, bought brand new one from bmw for 700
Pricey parts. Mine just broke again, the repair one so I going try and fix it again.
