How bout your pocket 😏
Interesting idea with helmets of strongly amored units limiting line of sight. This makes scout cheap unarmored units a lot more viable for battles and makes a lot of sense in terms of realism
But I‘m a bit concerned about lethality stats as archers could become quite broken with it. I‘m looking forward to testing it and to see how you balanced it out
Heavy armor and shields counter lethality.
Good news is the effectiveness of lethality can be changed by the player, if I’m not mistaken
@@sandwhich1172 a lot of the various customization settings they've put in this game are a really nice touch and should be the standard going forward.
Two-handed axes can split archers in two anyway, Irsu approves!
i love how you guys combined troy into it with the new update, thank you guys
Lethality is a cool way to balance the calls for both matched combat and slower-paced classic TW combat.
Rome 2 kinda had that with arrows and javelins , especially javelins , its too brutal there . but attila made both way softer somehow probably to not give a bigger boost to the huns and since then the arrows kept feeling weaker and weaker till they became spongy in troy and pharaoh so glad they are making the game brutal again especially with that blood dlc that make this game even more gruesome than rome2
@@LauftFafa I remember in Rome II on Very Hard difficulty using a single unit of Leves to kill an entire Oathsworn unit by pelting them in the back. Oathsworn being the deadliest infantry in the game.
@@R3GARnator yeah i swear , that game was the most satisfying in arrows and javelins , the best part beside watching the enemy formation collapsing to a volley is the sound , that crackling sound of arrows and javelins hiting shields and armor was so cool
Gotta hand it to CA Sofia for turning this ship around. This game could have easily been left to die, forgotten by pretty much everyone.
My idea is that they're building a framework for future historical TW games and they're using Pharaoh to beta test. Hopefully this is the first step towards Medieval 3.
@@TrifectaMonkey The technology seems to be getting to the point where Medieval 3 will be a seriously good evolution instead of just a reskin
@@TrifectaMonkey Gods hopefully not. Already Pharaoh is a Troy reskin, don't tell me they are gonna ruin Med3 with this old asf engine
@@DiocletianLarius Doesn't have to be the same engine. It's just about testing the concept of it.
@@TrifectaMonkey The point at which they make a profit is over. This total overhaul of everything is costing them millions.
ASSYRIA, I COME!!! I GOT MY ANCIENT HISTORY EXAM AT HISTORY UNIV, AND I RLY WANT TO PLAY ASSYRIA, THE NATIONS ALMOST COST ME THE EXAM xD
I'm so jealous bro. I wish I would've went to uni just to study history and archeology. I'm an ancient historian in my free time since middle school. Something no one would suspect this forklift driver of being. Congratulations.
I've played most historical total war games since Rome 1 when I was a kid. Skipped Troy, Three kingdoms and the Saga bs. Was hesitant about Pharaoh at first. But this new update actually makes me want to play this game! A huge step in the right direction!
So happy Sofia has had a chance to really cook on this. They're always so innovative in a way larger studios can't be and it feels like this is the first time CA is really giving them a chance to go all out.
Im absolutely stunned as a history geek at the gaul of these producers. How the hell is the longest lasting dynasty (107+ kings) within Mesopotamia, the Assyrians relegated to a “minor faction” in this game.
There isn't that much of a difference between major and minor factions, so it's not really that minor factions are smaller/worse, they mainly just don't have a unique leader, except the ones from Troy, and have slightly less units. Also Hanigalbat which is a major faction is technically an Assyrian faction too since it's leader Ninurta-Apal-Ekur will be the next Assyrian king. So it's basically the same as with Egypt where the actual Pharaoh, so the main Egypt, Merneptah is just a minor faction too and the one who later becomes the main Pharaoh this game is about starts outside of Egypt, Ramses III, is a major faction.
They explained this decision to make Assyria that way that they wanted to have the character of Ninurta-Apal-Ekur as the Assyrian leader since he as I said will become king of Assyria shortly after the start of the campaign, but since he isn't king yet in 1205 BC he starts as a separate faction next to Assyria, but his faction is basically Assyria too (ignore the faction name Hanigalbat, that just describes where he starts, but the faction culture is Assyrian, all the units are called Assur Horsemen or things like that, he has Assyrian gods and even CA called the faction "Assyria (Hanigalbat)", so they clearly intend him to be a Assyrian major faction.
everything about this is amazing! reworked battles, Campaign mechanics, family trees....the list keeps going. Excellent work CA sophia. Bravo.
So strange to give up on this title after all this work.
When TW new Engine come out, I hope CA Sofia will be the one who responsible to make Medieval 3 Total War. They're great team, have commitment, focus, and sheer will 🗿🗿
these guys have earned my respect, they really want to make this game good as it should had been in launch. willing to buy the game now!
interesting . This is definitely something i will get myself in the future. The team has done well. Hope they get some good rest
Amazing update incoming nice work !
This all seems good, especially the lethality and sightlines but I am a bit worried about it getting slower
Haven't tried out Pharaoh personally yet so not sure how the pacing is there but I know how REALLY slow it can get in Warhammer with some battles and ESPECIALLY sieges and not really because of a tactical reason but more because you either shouldn't or can't do anything better so you put it at the fastest speed and it STILL takes like 30min. Lower the battle timer you say? That just puts some factions at a straight up disadvantage making them much less fun to both play as and against
I do hope this update is well received and the pacing is great
Excited to see how modders can perfect lethality - cool mechanic!
Good work all of you, hopefully most of you form your own studio away from creativity assembly to bring to life what you guys always wanted to do.
Customizing more than 20 units in an army would be a huge improvement !
It doesn't make sense because the game cannot handle 40 units both sides on a good PC with extreme size or more units even with ultra unit size. Engine needs to be modernized or smth.
There is mods for this. You better have a NASA's PC.
Now is a real total war game.
I think im just misunderstanding the explanation, but it seems like lethality mode will make the battles faster?
Yeah they will deffo be fast i think, but more cinematic apparently. Im looking forward to trying it out
I got the impression he meant you'll have to be more careful and tactical, rather than just charge in. I think!
Yes, and it's awful.
@@scotvince7847 I honestly don't think Lethality is too overpowering. Trash militia gets shredded by arrows if they aren't armored but it from what I've seen it isn't absolutely oppressive. I like it cuz it makes flanking manuevers and charges feel properly impactful when a bunch of models actually die on impact.
All this new mechanics and changes are great, I just hope and would love to see all these new things to be part of future proyects as well
This is just Amazing !!! Those battles modifications look genius !
I'm over the moon about the update, thank you so much for completing the game! It should be exactly what it should be for me, I just have to get used to all the gods and diplomacy.
The lethality mechanic sounds cool, but I'm a bit worried we'll end up with battle being overly fast-paced with that.
Love the thing with ranged units though.
The Taskmaster units and their relationship to the rest of the roster for the Babylonians sounds like a really cool concept. For future Total Wars - let's say Med 3, if it ever comes around(No, I will not harp on about it) I'd love to see more of that, seeing as many of the regular troops were just temporary levies.
"Troy had some absolutely beautiful battle maps." Aw, that little proud smile ^^ Seriously though, Troy did have great battle maps.
Keep up the good work, Studio Sofia! Looking forward to the release of this!
Sounds really good! The battles where the biggest weakness of the game imo, but this sound really promising. The team from Sofia is great and has a lot of nice ideas. I hope they will get the love they deserved with this update
good work my friends
the game is shaping very well in my mind
Looks awesome 👌🏼
CA must make an experiment on focusing on reality instead of "fun". It may sound weird but so did Darksouls when they said they made a game that you will have hard time playing it. I think for most soldier once the engagement begins they won't be controlled and fight until they rout or defeat the enemy. Only units that can hold their formation in battle must be those with disciplined trait. Also there should be a mode that you don't play the battle but your general does just like a football menager game. You focus on making decisions before the battle begins and maybe sending reserves or calling retreat when battle takes place. Training and trying to trust and even making conversations like those in chatgpt with your AI advisors is the future for Total war in my opinion. There must be less UI , for example less arrow trail effects, range indicators. There should be just realistic cinematic with a tiny decision pannel.
About the UI stuf, like arrow trails, you can already completely remove all that in Pharaoh.
Wow, I really hope we can build up a big MP! I wanna host tournaments with these inovations. Thank you for overhauling the battles!
Man, ich hoffe wir können da einen guten Mehrspieler aufbauen. Ich will Turniere organisieren.
Nice
Very nice. please correct how a land unit enters the sea, making a port city or mercenary ships mandatory, to prevent an army from leaving the middle of the desert to enter the sea and attack you just like that.
Awesome.
I really look forward to play these improvements :)

i think CA should fix the animation of missile like shogun 2
So lethality is like random crits? That’s fair and balanced.
Isn't that guy on the thumbnail Agamemnon?
Yes that's Agamemnon, he's one of the faction leaders they will add.
@@lp4514 in Pharaoh? Why? Is it some crossover expansion?
@@saphyrionelendilion7166In case that's the first video you saw about this update, it expands the campaign map and and in the east adds all of Mesopotamia (with new factions like Babylon and Assyria) and in the west the Aegean with Greece and the rest of western Anatolia (with new factions like Mycenae, lead by Agamemnon, and Troy). It will add all the characters from Troy as playable characters like Achilles, Diomedes, Rheseus, Memnon etc. except Amazons since they're fantasy and Pharaoh is historical.
It will increase the size of the campaign map from 180 regions to about 350 regions, increase the number of total factions on the map from 95 to about 190, add about 150 new units (about half from Troy, the other half new Mesopotamian units) and also adds 29 new playable factions and things like family tree etc.
@lp4514 seems interesting. I played Troy but I found it a bit complicated (last one I played was TW Rome 1) but never played Pharaoh, seems kinda intriguing for the historical part. Thanks for the explanation. Maybe after I finish Ghost of Tsushima I will give it a chance.
This is what every TW combat system should be like

That matched combat now finally also has matched kill animations at the end for all regular soldiers and not just the generals as it was before is a huge improvement. Looked weird before, like there was something missing.
right? are we even going to need Hecleas animation mod anymore?
Wait so now there is matched combat like Rome 2 and atilla?
@@Byz_enjoyer Yes, there always kind of was matched combat in the game, like that a soldier hits another soldier and he reacts by blocking it with his shield, but kill animations at the end (the most important part in my opinion) only happened for generals when they killed somebody, not for regular soldiers. Now everybody has them, so regular soldiers use matched combat kill animations too. So like in Rome 2 and Attila as you said.
@@lp4514 that’s so awesome, I’m actually now really hyped to play pharaoh
Lethality isn't really a "new" system. That's just how battles worked in Total War before Rome II. Still glad the old system is back as an option.
I agree with you there. These aren't new systems. They've been around in the old Total War games. Glad that they're finally being reimplemented again though. Tired of the fast arcadey system they've been going with since Warhammer.
@@Torag55 Isn't lobbed and direct shots already a thing in Medieval 2? They only do lobbed when their line of fire is obstructed because, as you said, lobbed shots waste enerygy ergo less effective. So why bother making it a toggleable option when the game should be able to decide that automatically? What circumstances would the player prefer it outside of that reason?
@@kubli365 Yes. This has been a thing since like Rome Total War as well, which is carried over to Medieval 2 Total War. I agree with you. I don't see the point in making it a togglable option. What's also funny is that if the units in Medieval 2 have a direct line of sight with the enemy, they will do direct shots instead of arc shots even if they're at max range, and as you said, they only do arcing shots if they don't have direct line of sight. In a way, this is a downgrade from Medieval 2 Total War's ranged attacks. However, the new Total War games have more accurate shots than Medieval 2, as arcing shots in Medieval 2 are very inaccurate and tend to be spread out compared to Dynasties.
@@kubli365 At a guess you can choose between increased lethality or less friendly fire when firing over friendly units. It should really be automated with an option to override the AI's decision though. Even in Rome 1 the AI mostly made the right call for the type of shot and having to micromanage that sounds awful.
@@Torag55 I’ve watched an hour of gameplay, it’s so dated and obviously selling us mods rather than new games. I mean the tedious faction roulette after a turn end? How about only follow the factions that your ‘scouts’ deem a threat? The stupid animation before/after a battle, why not show generals meet and dramatically head back to their armies, and at the end of a battle show a period accurate execution? The clashing hasn’t looked good since atilla, and gosh those huge banners filling up the screen is crazy to me. It seems so easy to improve this game, but I feel they don’t want to so they can drip feed improvements, or pretend things are new and improved while they were around since twenty years ago.
The last time I came this early my girlfriend broke up with me.
That’ll leave more time to campaign 👍
Sounds like a really shitty girlfriend. You're better off, fam.

Why
There are so many great announcements here. Larger battle maps!!! Really love what CA Sofia is doing, both of their own creative endeavor and leveraging the feedback fans have been giving. Standing ovation to everyone at Sofa. I always thought base Pharaoh was still a great game and I thought the community tantrum was a bit weird, but Dynasties is looking SUPERB.
Sadly only the new battle map will be bigger; the old ones won't be increased in size.
@@GermanOlle They did not say that in this video. They actually even said the Troy maps needed reworking. Their statement about battle maps being larger was not exclusively with regards to Mesopotamia. And the Troy maps had plenty of space to expand the map edges.

@@mariusbehm9874 "We are making land battles a lot larger than they used to be." They said this talking about the entire Dynasties expansion. Yup. What it should have probably been called originally, at least what the scope should have been originally. I was not interested in Pharaoh because I was not going to go along with them selling us pieces of the map piecemeal like in fantasy WH. But now that it's a full scope historical game with a full map like the older ones I interested now.

Steve said it! Bronze Age Total War!
The bow arc selection was a feature from Manor Lords that i was hoping would be brought to TW. Top job.
i would have prefered to have it automatic like in medieval 2:
- if unit sees directly enemy, they direct shoot
- if unit doesnt see it directly, they arc shoot
@@adrienwarad You can make it automatic. You just also have the option of forcing direct or indirect fire.
@@adrienwarad it defaults to automatic, but you can choose a particular type if you don't want to expend ammunition using the other

Wow, really looking forward to the new update! Tanks CA Sofia! Hope a lot of this is implemented inn new TW games
Lethality system was already in the past , in the old total war games.Thats why I love old total war games more !.
I hope CA fixed the battle in this game, there are tons of good animations with very poor execution, timming, hearth attacks and other dull stupid stuffs that make the game incredible arcade if compared to rome 2 (an 10Y old title!).
Awesome! It is true that bows and slings are more lethal in a flat trajectory and I’m glad this is represented. And it’s exciting to see scouting units mostly for visibility. Everything here is awesome and excited to play
It would be nice if there would be an option to exchange the faction/unit flags for the unit icons we had in Attila, ToB, and Three Kingdoms.
There already is an option for this in Pharaoh to make the unit icons look like that.
I'm glad they brought it back like it was in Rome 2. It just looks so much nicer.

I always thought a game mode where you play from the perspective of the general on the field. Right behind the lines of your men and have to react through line of sight.
That would be cinematic.
I want to say that it would have been nice to have a larger map with more factions (yes, I know, that's already huge) but I'm not sure there would have been much left regarding Bronze Age civs.
