Making of Spirited Away - Part 1

  • View Part 2 at: • Making of Spirited Awa... Winner of the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2003, Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away is one of the most impressive animated features ever. This is Ghibli Studio's bold contribution to children's literature, an Alice in Wonderland or a Wizard of Oz for the Japanese set.
Japanese animé at its finest, Spirited Away is guaranteed to delight hardcore devotees, and those who've yet to make an acquaintance with the best that the East has to offer. See it and marvel.
A wondrous fantasy about a young girl, Chihiro, trapped in a strange new world of spirits. When her parents undergo a mysterious transformation, she must call upon the courage she never knew she had to free herself and return her family to the outside world.
With none of the sentimentality of Disney nor the computerized sheen of Pixar, this traditional animé even blows the brilliant "Finding Nemo" out of the water. It's epic story is more imaginative, rousing and luscious than anything American animation has produced since the halcyon days of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
The workings of Miyazaki's wild imagination are laid bare in set pieces like Chihiro's attempt to bathe a 'stink god' - a slobbering mass of slime and grease who stinks the bathhouse out. His feel for the eccentric is even drawn into incidental characters like The Frog in a kimono, and the three disembodied green heads who roll around muttering to themselves.

The American dubbing of Spirited Away is quite excellent, but as with most foreign films, it's best to watch it in its original language with subtitles.

Well, I kind of agree but I think they used too much Disney actors and American voices in the english. Plus the dialogue, vocals and acting are better in Japanese, it's the only one I'm able to watch. Also did anyone think it was strange that haku was voiced by a 12 year old boy in the Japanese version but he was voiced by a 27 year old man in the English version? I mean there was supposed to be a love story between chihiro and haku right?

    • @lucasmnribeiro
      @lucasmnribeiro 10 ปีที่แล้ว +19

I saw the movie in english ( just 30 minutes) and in jpn and portuguese-brasil. The english version is so weird! The haku voice is wrong, very very wrong. In japanese is perfect, and the portuguese dubbing match with the movie.

After he finishes that I think
"Comedy is separated between three types of writers...
You have joke writers. They give you jokes
You had gag writers. They give you gags
You've got head writers. They give you... Wait... Hey"

Yess the River god!!! We walked to the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka from the station along the river and saw the huge fish in the river! I knew Miyazaki took part in cleaning it every year, but did not connect it to the river god until now.

the story and animation are great in this movie i appreciate how realistic these characters are and there reactions in these situations i have to say i liked this movie more than princess mononoke
i like how it doesnt describe everything in detail unlike some of the other movies (the way it does that makes it seem like an unrealistic situation)

A child doesn't have the resources to make a movie.
An adult doesn't have the imagination to create magic.
Unfortunatly childhood and adulthood are mutually exclusive.
Except those very few special individuls, like Hayao Miyazaki or James Matthew Barrie. They can create something truely fantiastic, truely magical.

the definition of them are similar but that doesn't mean they ARE similar. think about it this way.
there is two boxes, one box is filled with pillows and the other is filled with bricks. if you look at the boxes, you could argue that they are exactly the same. and they effectivley are. however, the contents of the box (what really matters) is vastly different and hardly comparable.

I didn't mean he's divine or magical in that sense. I meant that he has a very special gift (or talent if you prefer that word), that VERY few people have.
For example, I could work my self to the bone, yet I would never create something like what he does. Not because my mana is low, but because I'm just not special in that way.
I am personally more impressed by his gift, than the fact that he's worked hard to realize it.

Too bad the producers of Disney animation don't allow all the Studio Ghibli films they publish in the west to inspire their own productions in terms of originality and give them the guts to take some risks and treat their audience with a little more respect for their maturity.
