Character essay on Sariel HRtP: "Be not Afraid" the Touhou.

- I am very very much not as confident in this essay as I am well versed in everything Gengetsu related, but that was a VERY fun thing to do and i managed somehow to cover different takes on her character that combine outside world lore of the angel of the same name, and piece all that together.
Definitely take this with a grain of salt but this is the best i can do with a character that does not speak.

I do wish fans depicted Sariel as more of an androgynous being even with being a character of touhou but these are my exact feelings. Sariel is my favorite pc98 character and I love when people use religious imagery to tell their own messed up little story. Thank you for making this! I never know how to articulate my thoughts properly when I say how much I love Sariel.
Never got to actually play Hrtp, but the whole luring Reimu into Makai as a form of compensation is really interesting, especially considering we don't exactly know what Sariel wanted from Reimu. It certain that her life could've used as a payment of sorts, but my question is how (time to go on a tangent!) Ok, so in touhou claiming something's life dosen't necessarily that it dies as proven by Yuyuko, Orin, and Komachi. Yuyuko proves that someone does have the possibility of dying without being removed from existence. I'm sure you know about the backstory of Yuyuko, and should her situation be applicable to all living beings, after Sariel claims Remiu's life should she choose to, Reimu would be a ghost in a similar state Yuyuko is in. This would work well, as the incidents caused after Hrtp could still be resolved, as Reimu, while now technically dead, could still be "alive" to keep Gensokyo running. This then leads to Komachi. Komachi leads spirits that have recently died across the Sanzu river, but she doesn't collect nor steal the spirits she ferries. She actually gets pretty mad (which is saying a LOT for Komachi) when a soul or spirit is unnecessarily destroyed or taken. If this logic is applied to every living thing, 3 main principles would be established. The first would be that there's a difference between a soul and a spirit, and talking one MAY not affect the other. The second one would be that the wrongful destruction of a soul or spirit has unforeseen consequences, so one must be careful not to destroy one. The third world be that the ability to actually TAKE a soul or spirit without destroying it in the process takes a VERY powerful being, which Sareil definitely is. If Sariel wanted Reimu's soul or spirit as reimbursement, who to say she couldn't? The reason it connects to Orin is as follows. Orin is a Kasha that collects the corpses of already dead beings. These corpses are completely lifeless, with souls and spirits already lost from them. This means that if something has a soul or spirit, it cannot be dead. Orin can ONLY collect something that has no lifeforce within it. It's a bit of a stretch, but it kinda leans back into both Sariel being benevolent and Sariel having the ability to take a lifeforce as compensation. Sariel would probably already know that taking something's lifeforce completely would kill it, and as you said here, Sariel likely doesn't want to do that, so by only taking one select portion of a person's driving force, whatever Reimu needed to pay would be paid and Reimu wouldn't have to die for it. So Reimu did something to cause Sariel to need compensation, Sariel takes this payment of either her soul or spirit without destroying Reimu in the process, all while making sure that Reimu doesn't die, or if Reimu SHOULD die, her existence remains in tact. So yeah, Sariel from what I'm understanding is a very powerful and very overlooked character. This comment is SO long omg lol. So yeah, here's my theory about Sariel from a person who's never played Hrtp but can think of very educated responses from the information given to me based on prior knowledge >:3

Gengetsu and Mugetsu were already big favorites of mine but I'd be very excited about seeing a Shinki video in the future, particularly cause she's adorably badass but also has a mysteriously similar design/fight location to Sariel, so I'm realllly curious what you'd have to say about a connection between the two 👀
(Plus the potential connection between the two Makai iterations/areas we see in HRtP and MS)

oh ABSOLUTELY she's one of my favorites and just like in this video i will also gladly take 20 seconds of the video to make my keychain of her spin for the camera (on a serious note tho yes she fascinates me it will take me some time to make all her charms and powerful character traits shine in their best light so i dont miss anything)
