    Me, ever in a hurry, cutting corners, never want to baste. After watching this, I'm sold on basting!! The point that the basting stitch doesn't stretch...duh!! Winner! Winner! Chicken dinner!! You rock!

      Of course the hem does stretch once the basting is removed, but yes, it helps stabilize it for this type of hem.

    Thankyou for the demonstration. I see how much a basting stitch helps in this. And its ok to have the wrinkles on the inside. I will definitely follow this tecnique. Thankyou

    Thanks Melissa, stretch fabrics can be scary, but I love the fit.

    When you sew a basting stitch, how do you get it out once you have sewn your seam on top of it? If I baste, and then go and topstitch using a triple stitch or some other type of stretch stitch on top of where I have basted, I have essentially sewn my basting stitch into the topstitch, right? I'm confused about how this works.

      You're not sewing on the basting stitches here, they end up at the bottom of the hem.

    Thanks so much for this life changing video! When you use your coverstitch to hem do you flip the pins around or do you just reach under to pull them out of the hem as you go? Thank you!

    • @Mellysews

      Both! Depends on which one I want to do that day.

    I’m sewing a swim skirt for my little sister (she wants a long one for modesty reasons) and the edges are curves so i looked this tutorial up. Will i be able to steam and press the swimsuit fabric?

    • @Mellysews
      @Mellysews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'd suggest trying a scrap first and also using a pressing cloth.

    Can I use a zig-zag stitch instead of a double noodle to hem with this method?

    • @Mellysews
      @Mellysews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, any stretch stitch can be used.

    Mell, I'm confused about what is a good fabric for making women's underwear (panties). I grew up only buying 100% cotton because of feminine hygiene concerns. So what kind of breathable with a slight stretch cotton fabric can I buy?
    I type in - jersey knit but I'm not sure if thats the correct one. I'm looking for solids and prints.
    I watched the video you posted about fabrics but didn't see any that interest me. Do you shop Joanns, Etsy, or amazon? If so, can you send a link?

      Wouldn't jersey knit be too thick? That's kind of like a tshirt type material isnt it?

      Jersey knit comes in many fibers and weights. You'd have to look at the specific fabric details to tell more.

    This was very helpful...does this apply to wovens as when your skirt has a curved hem too?

    • @LovedSarita
      @LovedSarita 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have seen this technique before but on non stretch fabrics for curved hems, so it will be perfect too

    • @Mellysews
      @Mellysews  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer a different method for wovens: mellysews.com/sew-curved-hem-hem-curves-bias-tape/

    Melly, is a stretch stitch the same as an "elastic" stitch? I have been asked to take in the sides of the jerseys of my Grandson's team, I'm a fairly new sewer and I'm terrified! I guess I'm supposed to use polyester thread so it stretches with the material (which I'm not even sure what that is, but it's a sports jersey) and a Jersey needle cuz it's a bit stretchy. On my Brother LX3817A I have plenty of zig zag stitches, straight stitches, an elastic stitch and a stretch blind hem stitch. I've tried some of them and the zig zag stretches better, but I don't know how that'll look on the outside of the jerseys. Of course if people have time to see stitches on the players, they must not be moving enough LOL. Please help! Any info will be appreciated!
