- 'Blackbirding' trade: Australia's shameful slave trade
Calls have been made on the Australian and Queensland governments to officially apologise to the descendants of South Sea Islanders who were victims of the blackbirding trade that brought them to Australia to work on plantations.
There was a re-enactment today to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first ship arriving in Queensland with its human cargo of Pacific Islanders
What a pity. Australia's shameful hidden and almost forgotten History!!
WHO IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE
I first learnt about this as a 50 year old at the Tweed Coolongatta Border Monument. Shame on the NSW education curriculum in the 70/80/90s.
I didn't know Slavery existed in Australia.
its disgusting how they dont educate this in schools !
Hello white people what can you expect
Sad indeed to see this clip. Australian and British Government should consider this issue ( blackbirding). Compensation should be made to Solomon Island, Vanuatu and Png as well as other pacific island countries. Solomon Island still hard hatred to Australia, the reason being, the picture of the event is still taught and still fresh in the Curriculum of the Solomon island until today. This is an international issue and should be considered.
First 65 South Sea Islanders brought to Australia 16/04/1847
on the "Velocity" Capt Kirsopp,
