I retaught myself how to think critically after my discharge, and the understanding (which came much later) that even us _homo sapiens_ are emotionally oriented and motivated, changed how I understood science and society. Cognitive biases, instinctual judgments, and sequential/repetitive exposure all shape individual and public opinion. It's in the advertising everywhere, most people just can't (or don't want to) see it.
