    I got my snake in 2015 and I think I was told misinformation. I went to my local pet store and got her. I didn’t realize I needed to size up. I feel so bad that I never gave her more than pinkies for a while. Now I’m trying to figure all this out. Thanks for the video!

    I more than like it...I LOVE it and the timing is so perfect for me! I have a subadult male cornsnake who is about to turn 1 year old in 3 weeks. I needed something I could compare his weight with the weight of the mouse and be sure he's getting the proper things. He was 14" when I got him in December, and now after a fresh shed, he is 30" and we are about to start with baby fuzzies. I think I'm right on, but I do appreciate the video, even 4 years later!

    Very nice video. A few comments: I've raised snakes, probably since before you were born. I NEVER weighed the snakes nor the mice. It's good to be precise, but not necessary. Also, mouse can be a bit larger then girth of snake. They can handle it. Well done.

    • @DannleChannel
      @DannleChannel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@logitr6000 At 5 months, a corn snake can easily be big enough to need more than one pinkie per week. My corn snake went up to two pinkies per week at four months (and would harass me for a third), and switched to one fuzzy per week at five months. Feeding a snake two prey items at a time is fine when they're getting a little too big for their current feeders, but not quite big enough to go up a size. Feeding them two pinkies is safer than giving them a fuzzy that might be too big for them. Important to note that these periods of giving two prey items at a time, in most cases, don't last very long (or shouldn't, at least).

      Hi, good question when I first got her I didn’t notice this as she was soo small, but as she has gotten bigger I have seen this and it’s not a result of her being scaleless, it’s a result of one of two things, genetics or incubated too cold. It doesn’t affect her moving around or eating larger pray as of yet - I believe the shop should have euthanised her but I will seek further vet advice if and when she is no longer able to eat and live normally.

      @thesecretlifeofsnakes8074  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Karrdeh Hi, it’s not a silly question. I think it can be difficult if you are vegan or vegetarian because the whole not eating animals thing, however if you eat meat which I do, I treat it the same as I would if I was picking up chicken breasts from my local supermarket for a family meal. I only feed frozen thawed mice to my snake and so it’s basically the same as it would be if I was eating roast chicken. I actually own gerbils, as well as other animals so I understand where you’re coming from and they are my much loved pets, but my reptiles have their own room and so never come into contact with what they would consider ‘food’ and I would never even dream of feeding my pets to my snake, so it’s just about mindset really. Hope this helps!

      I mean, so am I. If you get the food from a chain pet store they're gonna have the weight in grams on the package. And if it's from a separate pet store, of you ask how much the mice weigh they'll probably give it to you in grams. You can't exactly weigh things in pounds if they're below 1 pound and their sizes differ quite a bit even while still at the same weight in pounds. You have to use a smaller way of weighing when dealing with small things.

      The modern standard, recommended method is buying frozen feeder mice, and thawing and heating them (to at least room temperature, ideally a little warmer) right before feeding. NO professional today recommends feeding live prey to a snake unless they absolutely will not take anything else, which is extremely rare.
